Here at 100 Guitarists, we thought we knew a lot about Allan Holdsworth. But after we did our deepest of dives, we only emerged with more questions: Was Holdsworth the John Coltrane of the guitar? Was he the quintessential fusion guitarist? Why isn't there a Holdsworth signature Synthaxe? And how do you read his weird chord charts? We might not have all the answers—and when it comes to his chord charts, we definitely do not—but we're taking some big swings. We also share our top picks, which includes Tony Williams rippers, slick Ted Templeman-production, and a Beatles cover. In our current listening segment, we're talking about a Wayne Horvitz/Bill Frisell archival release and Jersey Boys.Sponsored by Voodoo Lab: https://voodoolab.com/Follow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. The Journey and Legacy of Sweetwater's Uncelebrated Icon - An Interview with the late Austin de LoneIn this interview, which took place in October 2022 before Mount Tam Media launched its Tales From The Green Room podcast, Austin de Lone sits down with host Dennis Strazulo to discuss his rich musical journey and his pivotal involvement with Sweetwater Music Hall, as the venue approached its 50th Anniversary. This is the raw recording of Dennis's visit with Austin for the purpose of writing a feature story on Austin for Mt. Tam Media's Mill Valley Living Magazine to celebrate that event. With Austin's recent passing, the recorded conversation was re-purposed to release as this special podcast episode, honoring Austin's lasting legacy.Moving to Sweetwater in the early 1970s, Austin recounts the creation and rise of his band Eggs Over Easy, their unexpected London ventures working with Chas Chandler (The Animals, Producer and Manager for Jimi Hendrix), recording at the famed Olympics Studio, and the birth of the pub rock scene. He also discusses the transformation of Sweetwater into a cornerstone of the local music scene, brining the venue to national fame as he worked with John Goddard of Village Music and Sweetwater's beloved owner, Jeannie Patterson, highlighting key interactions with notable musicians like Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe and so many more. The conversation transitions into Austin's personal efforts in starting the Prader-Willi California Foundation in response to his son's condition. This story captures the essence of a musician's enduring influence on his community and provides insight into the historical and emotional layers of Sweetwater's musical heritage.LinksMill Valley Living October 2022 Feature Story on Austin de Lone Sweetwater Music Hall Website - History

It has a life of its own. It shouldn't be kept behind glass. It should be out in front of people. With that emotion passing through.- Jack Barton The biggest bummer about it these days is just how everybody's got a super computer in their pocket, and everybody's addicted to the shit, and unless you engage with social media, people don't know that you're active. - Sam Grisman I never imagined myself becoming a guitarist ever. I never had big aspirations to be a musician or play guitar at all. But I started playing during the pandemic. - Bella Rayne Honestly, I was thrilled to play with all of these musicians, but I have a special place in my heart for the guys from Los Lobos. Yeah. I mean, holy cow. What a thrill. - Jill Simmons From the beginning, I'm grateful. That we've been able to do what we've wanted to do all these years. And for it to come around to where it's at now. Before they hit it big, Heart found themselves ripping club gigs, where they earned the nickname “Little Led Zeppelin.” It's a moniker that stuck as the band carried the torch first lit by their heroes for decades to come. If you've ever seen the Kennedy Center video of Heart covering “Stairway to Heaven” for Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, you know how bright that fire burns. After covering Nancy Wilson on an earlier episode of 100 Guitarists, we knew we had to invite her to join us on our Jimmy Page episode! She tells us about discovering Led Zeppelin—from walking out on their opening set for Fifth Dimension to eventually hearing them at the right place at the right time—and shares her favorite songs, what it was like meeting Jimmy for the first time, and then what it was like to play for him at the Kennedy Center. On our current listening segment, we're talking about releases from guitarists Niwel Tsumbu and drummer Nate Smith. Thanks to Gibson for the support: https://www.gibson.com/en-US/p/Electric-Guitar/Jimmy-Page-EDS-1275-Doubleneck-VOS/69-Cherry?utm_source=premier_guitar&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=fy25_gibson&utm_content=jimmy_page_eds-1275Follow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. Naturally, every recording Eddie Van Halen ever played on has been pored over by legions of guitar players of all styles. It might seem funny, then, to consider EVH solos that might require more attention. But your 100 Guitarists hosts have their picks of solos that they feel merit a little discussion. Some of these are deep cuts—get ready for some instrumental bonus tracks and Van Halen III mentions—and some are among the biggest radio hits of their time. Just because their hits, though, doesn't mean we don't have more to add to the conversation. We can't cover everything EVH—Jason has already tried while producing the Runnin' With the Dweezil podcuast. But we cover as much as we can in our longest episode yet. And in the second installment of our current listening segment, we're talking about new-ish music from Oz Noy and Bill Orcutt.Supported by ToneSpeak: https://www.tonespeak.com/Follow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. Tales from the Green Room hits the road with its debut visit to the iconic Capitol Theater in Port Chester, New York, sitting down backstage with Dark Star Orchestra lead guitarist, Jeff Mattson! Recorded in between DSO's first two shows since the passing of Phil Lesh, Jeff reflects on his memorable interactions with Phil and how the band prepared for these memorable performances at one of his favorite venues. The episode continues with Jeff expressing gratitude and sharing memories about being the first person to publicly play Jerry Garcia's famed Alligator Fender Strat, courtesy of Andy Logan and the Grateful Guitars Foundation. Jeff also muses about the intimacy of playing at Phil's Terrapin Crossroads, his jazz and improvisation influences, the difference between West Coast and East Coast audiences and maintaining musical authenticity while honoring the legacy of The Grateful Dead. The conversation covers Mattson's experiences playing at famous venues, his deep connection to the music of the Grateful Dead, and his memorable interactions with Phil Lesh. Additional topics include the differences between East and West Coast Deadheads, the impact of venue intimacy, and Mattson's reflections on maintaining musical authenticity while honoring the legacy of the Grateful Dead.Quotes From The EpisodeI grew up with improvisation, all the time, hearing it, seeing my father do it, and Miles Davis, Coltrane, playing in the house all the time growing up, so, it just seemed the most natural thing in the world to improvise. - Jeff MatsonThe thing I always heard was that the East Coast audience were a little more vociferous. And, West Coast audience were a little more chill, like “we don't get carried away.” I mean, wherever you come from, if you're a deadhead, you love the music. -Jeff MatsonListen Now:

On this episode I talked with Carly her early experiences in theater, starting at age ten with a role in a YMCA production of "Alice in Wonderland," which ignited her passion for performing, her role as Annie in a community theater production, which solidified her desire to pursue a career in the arts, her diverse musical skills which she credited to her parents' encouragement to explore different instruments and styles, being part of workshops for “Anne of Green Gables” and “Sweetwater” and what it's like to work on beginning stages of a show and develop characters, her experience on the Theaterworks tours of “The Civil War” and “A Christmas Carol” and how those experiences prepared her for the National tour of “Wicked”, her unexpected journey to audition for the role of Elphaba in "Wicked," her initial believing she was better suited for Glinda than Elphaba, her reaction when she booked the Elphaba standby on tour, what her rehearsal process for the tour looked like, making her Elphaba debut in the same city she first saw “Wicked” on stage in, her interpretation of Elphaba, Elphaba's growth throughout the timespan of the show, what she does backstage when she's not on, her dream roles, and much more!
In the early '60s, some of the British guitarists who would shape the direction of our instrument for decades to come all found themselves at a concert by Sister Rosetta Tharpe. What they heard from Tharpe and what made her performances so special—her sound, her energy—must have resonated. Back at home in the U.S., she was a captivating presence, wowing audiences going back to her early days in church through performing the first stadium rock ‘n' roll concert—which was also one of her weddings—and beyond. Her guitar playing was incendiary, energetic, and a force to be reckoned with.On this episode of 100 Guitarists, we're joined by guitarist Molly Miller, who in addition to being a fantastic guitarist, educator, bandleader, and performing with Jason Mraz, is a bit of a Sister Rosetta scholar. We chat with Molly about Sister Rosetta's “immediately impressive” playing, which blends jazz, gospel, chromaticism, and blues into an early rock ‘n' roll style that was not only way ahead of its time but was also truly rockin'.Sponsored by Gibson: https://www.gibson.com/en-US/Collection/sister-rosetta-tharpeFollow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. We talk about how the Hitmaker voices his progressions—“You hear Nile play a chord progression … and it's that song”—and the role of rhythm guitar in general. Cory delivers his list of best Nile performances, tips for direct guitar sounds, and most surprising Nile collabs.Ever wonder what it would sound like if Nile Rodgers produced David Lee Roth covering Willie Nelson?
