In this long trip to this domain, we take a detour to an ancient town, as we listen to the man say these words to his heart, at a time when he feels the pressure to part from the lady and go seek wealth: “Even if one has the grace of wishing to allay the suffering of a dark and burdened heart, rendering unto others is not possible for those who lack wealth. An elephant, full of fury, pierces with such force that it breaks its killer tusks, upon the trunk of a barren-branched burflower tree, and gathers the bark to feed its mate in that terrible summer. Such is the hot and arid drylands, where lament reigns supreme. Wearing long, flowery garlands and possessing victorious drums, the battle-worthy Chezhiyan rules over that ancient town, filled with soaring mansions. Embracing the walls of these mansions, stand coconut palm trees, with thick trunks bearing short nodes, drying in the extending heat. Its sprouts appear akin to many well-stitched flowers brimming in a basket, upon the branching nodes of the tree's neck. Once the covering of the sprouts splits open, these appear akin to swords cast in a forge. Day by day, they grow in beauty and appear akin to a necklace, filled with exquisite, new flowers, and then turning to appear akin to fans, attracting bees to feed. Those white flowers, appearing akin to pearls, then grow into small fruits, in the hue of conch shells, and the shape of hailstones. These bloom little by little, and what was once esteemed flowers, turn into unripe green fruits, which contains a delicious essence within. Sweeter than the taste of that water, is the elixir that springs forth amidst the sharp teeth in her red mouth. Those harsh drylands will not be hard to traverse if at all I were to take along that bangle-clad young maiden with me!” Let’s walk along through those spaces and find the way out of the maze in the man’s mind! He starts by making a philosophical statement about the importance of earning wealth for those who wish to end the suffering of others. From there, he takes us to the drylands and reveals how it’s sweltering and water is hard to come by, by pointing to a male elephant furiously attacking a burflower tree, just to peel off a bark to somehow allay its mate’s thirst. After that harsh portrait of the region, the man takes us in the presence of a victorious king, Chezhiyan, and then, off to his capital city, an ancient place, where mansions soar to the skies. The man turns his attention to a coconut palm tree that grows here, and takes us through the seasons, from when the tree just put out its white sprouts, to the opening of those sprouts, the forming of small, white, hail-stone-like tender outgrowths and then onward to the green ripe fruit of these trees. That rather long description, filled with many similes, is only to say the sweet water in those fruits cannot compare to the elixir that springs in the lady’s mouth. The man concludes by declaring that if he were to take that young lady along, then the drylands would not be hard to traverse! Even as he says it, the man knows that it’s an impossibility, and he would never subject his beloved to the suffering of that domain. In short, it’s the man’s ‘No’ to the nudge of his heart to part from the lady and go in search of wealth. The thing to be amazed about in this verse, is the time and effort taken by this poet to observe the various stages of this tree’s transformation and expressing those observations with rich similes. Here’s an ancient ancestor, wearing the hat of a poet-botanist, telling us not to be confused by the contrasting voices within us, pointing out that even a sensitive writer can happily co-exist with the serious scientist!

This episode is a recap — and an expansion — of the six-hour Mixing Masterclass that Dee Kei hosted live in his LA studio. Lu was in the room. The audience brought mixes. Things got real. Now Dee and Lu bring the best of it to the podcast, including the things they didn't get to cover in person.The first and most important topic: what is the actual value of a mix engineer, and how should that determine your pricing? Dee lays out a position he holds firmly — you should never discount your rate based on stem count, never negotiate yourself down before the client even asks, and never charge by the hour for mixing. Your rate reflects the lifetime of training behind each decision, not the time it took to make it. Like Picasso sketching on a napkin, the price isn't for the five minutes — it's for everything it took to get there. Lu adds the market reality: what your price communicates before the client even hears your mix, and why charging too little signals something you don't want to signal.From there the episode moves into compression — specifically what happened in the room when Dee deliberately smashed a vocal with an 1176 in "all buttons in" mode and the mix bus with a Vertigo VCA compressor just to prove a point. The reaction in the room said everything: over-compression isn't always wrong. Rules like "don't compress more than 2-3dB" are useful frameworks until the moment the song tells you otherwise.They also get into the subjective vs. objective nature of mixing — why saying "there's no such thing as a good or bad mix" is actually incorrect, and how to think about objectivity in a field where the tools of judgment are mostly invisible. Should you narrate your own audiobook? In this episode, I talk with my friend and colleague Laura English, an audiobook narrator and producer who works closely with independent authors through Laura English Voice Over and Evergreen Studios.   We discuss why authors should consider an audiobook, how to practice and prepare, home recording versus studio recording, coaching and directing, proofing and pickups, technical specifications, distribution, and marketing. We also discuss three production paths: doing everything yourself, narrating your book while hiring help with post-production, or hiring a professional narrator.   Laura and I met during audiobook narration training in 2019. She was there when The Pharmacist's Voice Podcast was still an idea, which makes this conversation a full-circle moment for me. Laura encourages authors to think of audio as one more way for readers to experience a book. Some people prefer audiobooks, while "hybrid readers" move between print, ebook, and audio depending on where they are and what they are doing. Audiobooks also improve access for people who have low vision, dyslexia, limited literacy, difficulty holding a book, or other barriers to reading print.   Three Ways to Produce an Audiobook Laura and I discuss three possible paths: Do everything yourself. Learn the performance and technical sides of audiobook production, record the book, proof the audio, make corrections, edit, master, and upload the files. Narrate your own book and hire help. Perform the material yourself, then work with a proof-listener and audio engineer to create retail-ready files. Hire a professional narrator. Choose a narrator who understands your subject and can manage or support the production process.   The right choice depends on your time, budget, access to professional help, production goals, and interest in learning the technical side of narration.   Practice Before You Commit Laura recommends starting by reading a chapter aloud in a closet or another small, quiet room. Notice where you stumble, lose focus, rush, or misread a sentence. Then record three to five minutes on your phone and ask someone for honest feedback about your clarity, pacing, energy, and listener engagement.   The goal is to find your natural voice. Do not imitate another narrator or slip into an announcer voice. Talk to the listener instead of sounding as though you are reading at them. Nonfiction can be educational and entertaining without sounding patronizing.   Vocal stamina also varies. Laura recommends planning a short first session—perhaps 30 to 45 minutes of recording—before booking long blocks of studio time. Frequent breaks help protect both your voice and your body. Once production begins, try to record within a consistent period so your voice, recording environment, and delivery do not change noticeably between chapters.   Proofing, Pickups, and Technical Specifications Every narrator makes mistakes. A proofer follows the manuscript while listening to the recording and identifies skipped text, incorrect words, unclear delivery, unwanted noises, and pronunciation problems. Those corrections are organized into a pickup packet so the narrator can rerecord them.   Authors of medical or technical books should give the proof-listener and engineer a pronunciation guide. You know your subject, and a list of unfamiliar names and terms helps the production team distinguish a correct specialized pronunciation from an error.   After the pickups are recorded, an engineer inserts the corrections, edits the files, and masters them to the chosen distributor's specifications. Laura strongly recommends hiring an engineer if you do not intend to make audio production a regular part of your work. Recording an entire book before learning that the files do not meet specifications can mean doing the work again.   Plan Before Recording Before starting, confirm that you control the audio rights to the book. Review the manuscript and decide which front and back matter will be included. Write the opening and closing credits in advance, read chapter headings as they appear in the print book, and allow pauses that help listeners understand the structure.   Audiobooks also need square cover art. Contact the original cover designer early rather than waiting until the narration is complete.    If audiobook production is connected to your business, ask your tax professional whether any related costs may qualify as business expenses.   Distribution and Marketing Laura encourages authors to research distributors instead of assuming there is only one choice. Options mentioned in the episode include ACX, Audiobooks Unleashed, and Author's Republic. Consider whether you want exclusive or wide distribution and whether library availability is important to you.   When marketing, promote the book in all available formats. Add audiobook links to your website and newsletter, use QR codes at conferences and events, appear on relevant podcasts, share short audio samples, speak at libraries, and ask readers or colleagues for honest reviews. Authors may launch all formats together or stagger the audiobook release to create a second wave of attention.   Laura's final message is simple: Get your books into audio. If you have written a book you care about, you can learn to narrate it, hire help for parts of the process, or work with a professional narrator. Sweetwater has a reputation that arrives before the box does. Ask any working musician and you get the same two details without prompting, the candy and the phone call.Laura Smith is Vice President of Marketplaces at Sweetwater Sound, the nation's largest online musical instrument retailer, and hers is the job where that reputation is easiest to lose, because she is the one selling Sweetwater's products on somebody else's storefront.She starts somewhere unglamorous. Consistency begins in the product data, and on a catalog as large as Amazon's the real risk is listing a product against the wrong page, one a retailer usually did not write. When the page is wrong, her team routes the fix back to the brand and will execute it on their behalf.What she is most direct about is fulfillment. Sweetwater keeps its Amazon business through the third-party site specifically so it can control that, which means the guitars still go through a 55-point inspection, still sit in a humidity-controlled warehouse, and still get packed the same way. The warehouse never learns which channel the order came from, and customers who arrive through Amazon get routed back to Sweetwater's own service team.On AI in content she answers yes, and then fills in the second half that usually goes missing. Humans first, because Sweetwater sells to musicians who research deeply before they buy. AI shows up as throughput rather than authorship. Not because you don't have the skill. Not because you don't have the credits. Then the pencil experiment, where people forced into a smile by how they held a pencil in their teeth rated cartoons as funnier than those forced into a frown — without being aware their facial expression had changed at all. The implication is direct: acting calm and confident doesn't just make you look calm and confident to others. It statistically makes you feel calmer and more confident yourself.The conversation also takes an unexpected turn into money priming — how the mere presence of money-related imagery in your environment makes people measurably more independent, more self-reliant, and also more selfish and socially distant — and what that means for the environments engineers build and the mindsets they carry into sessions.It ends where it started: the feeling of not belonging is not evidence of not belonging. This episode starts with a confession: Dee Kei wants a new compressor. Specifically, he's been eyeing the Heritage Audio Grandchild 670N — a $3,000 stereo Fairchild-style compressor in a 5U rack unit that launched in late 2025. From there, the episode opens up into something much more interesting than a gear review.Dee and Lu walk through exactly what makes the original Fairchild 670 so mythologized — the tube count, the time constants, the maintenance costs that make owning one feel like buying a second car you're afraid to drive — and why Heritage Audio's approach of distilling the circuit down to four tubes in an affordable, modern form factor is either brilliant or sacrilegious, depending on who you ask. They break down what the Grandchild 670N actually has on the front panel — DC threshold, AC threshold, sidechain filters, mid-side and stereo linking, true bypass — and why $3,000 for two channels of Fairchild-esque compression is a genuinely different proposition than it was even three years ago.But the most interesting part of the episode isn't the gear. It's what happens when Dee reads from two actual peer-reviewed studies on whether listeners can hear the difference between analog and digital processing at all. The first study tested analog modeling plugins against free non-modeling alternatives across 540 participants — and found that not only did listeners show no preference for the analog mix, the majority who thought they could identify it were wrong. The second covered DAX differences using a loopback method with over 1,300 respondents. The conclusion: people largely can't tell the difference, and the majority who claimed they could were misidentifying what they heard.So why does any of this matter — and why does Dee still want the compressor? The episode lands on something more philosophical than a gear recommendation: the difference between buying hardware because you believe it's objectively better, and buying it as an act of devotion to the craft. Dee Kei is alone with a page of talking points and one of the most contested topics in audio engineering right now — and the result is one of the most thoughtful solo episodes the show has produced.This is not an episode about which AI tools Dee uses or recommends. It's about something harder to talk about: how engineers think about delegation, what happens when a probabilistic recommendation gets presented with the confidence of certainty, and why the pro-AI vs. anti-AI binary is the least useful frame anyone could bring to this conversation.Dee opens with a distinction that reframes the entire debate: there's a difference between assistance tools, delegation tools, and full replacement — and most of the discourse collapses all three into one. He argues that engineers have been using automated decision-making for decades (dynamic EQ, auto release, delay compensation, drum replacement, LUFS metering), so the real question was never whether machines should make decisions. The real question is how much of the contextual, consequential decision-making we're comfortable handing over — and whether we understand what's being lost in that handoff.From there he gets into the value engineers actually bring that no AI is accounting for: accountability, history with an artist, taste, creative confidence, the ability to hear the same note as a client and understand what they actually mean.
