Mixing Music with Dee Kei | Audio Production, Technical Tips, & Mindset
In this solo episode, Dee Kei walks through exactly what a mixing session looks like from the moment he sits down to the moment the file goes out — no guests, no theory, just the real process he uses on every project. He covers why the very first listen always happens before a single plugin is touched, how he organizes and gain stages a session before anything else, and the order in which he builds a mix and why. He also gets into his philosophy on plugin chains, how he actually uses reference tracks without chasing them, and how he knows when his ears have stopped telling him the truth. The episode wraps with his delivery routine — what the final check looks like, how he communicates with clients on send, and why the follow-up step most engineers skip is more important than they think. If you've ever wanted to look over Dee Kei's shoulder during a real session, this is the closest thing to it.SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PATREON FOR EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!SUBSCRIBE TO YOUTUBEJoin the ‘Mixing Music Podcast' Discord!HIRE DEE KEIHIRE LUHIRE JAMESFind Dee Kei and Lu on Social Media:Instagram: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLu @JamesParrishMixesTwitter: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLuThe Mixing Music Podcast is sponsored by Izotope, Antares (Auto Tune), Sweetwater, Plugin Boutique, Lauten Audio, Filepass, & CanvaThe Mixing Music Podcast is a video and audio series on the art of music production and post-production. Send us Fan MailArchaeologists in Scotland just unearthed a 1,100 year old Norse drinking hall on Orkney, complete with stone benches, sea views, and possibly the personal watering hole of a legendary Viking chieftain. Meanwhile, in Wisconsin, Minocqua Brewing Co. just had $25,000 worth of beer seized by state officials in a tax dispute the brewery's outspoken owner claims is political payback from the governor, and now there's a lawsuit to match. On the science side, a new study throws a wrench into "gluten-free" beer claims, revealing some labeled options in Germany still carry detectable gluten residue that standard tests miss entirely. That's bad news if you're brewing or buying gluten-free and assuming zero risk. Then we head to Boston, where Scottish World Cup fans have reportedly drained planes, bars, and entire beer store fridges dry ahead of their opener against Haiti. Sam Adams needed an emergency resupply to keep up.Plus: Tilray's plans to pour SweetWater, 10 Barrel, Terrapin, and other craft brands through BrewDog's UK taps, and the most baffling beer collab of the year: Heinz and Heineken's official six pack featuring five beers and one bottle of ketchup. We rank it against our own dream pairings (a PBR Pickle Pack, anyone?).Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! This was the 316th consecutive episode of "Thinking Out Loud with friends of Soundbroker," featuring a heavy focus on professional audio gear and industry insights. The team discussed Riley's upcoming delivery of a portable DMIX128 console from Sweetwater and shared technical specifications of vintage JBL E130 speakers from 1980s stadium setups. They also praised the massive audio quality improvements implemented by engineer Sully on Bruno Mars's current stadium tour using Sound Devices equipment to eliminate wireless distortion.Christopher shared ongoing frustrations regarding rebuilding efforts in Malibu and Pacific Palisades after the wildfires, highlighting three-month city permit delays, skyrocketing foundation costs, and rampant construction material theft that has the community eyeing surveillance solutions like tethered blimps. The session wrapped up with a mix of pop culture, aerospace news, and personal achievements. The group reviewed recent films like Oppenheimer and Barbie, which prompted Jan to share that he originally worked with John Williams on the original Star Wars album. Finally, they touched on skyrocketing international airfares, the infrastructure impacts of the recent Blue Origin launch pad explosion compared to SpaceX's Starlink momentum, and a psychological look at earworms via the Zeigarnik effect.---DM To BS with Jan Landy and his knowledgeable, affable panel of friends and colleagues for a no-filter discussion on life. Singer-songwriter Kristin Diable joins Only In The Green Room at the New Orleans Jazz Museum during French Quarter Fest — and the conversation goes deep.We talk about what it really means to lose your creative voice, how traumatic experiences can freeze a songwriter's ability to be vulnerable, and what it took to come back from that and finish her long-awaited album Impossible Things — out now.Kristin also opens up about leaving New York in her 20s for a writing sabbatical in New Orleans and never leaving, why the camaraderie between New Orleans musicians is unlike anything else in America, how she thinks about being the "parent of her songs," and what it means to choose joy when things are genuinely hard.Plus: teaching the "dark arts of songwriting" at Loyola University, running her own independent label Speak Easy, why she thinks festivals are the antidote to screen addiction, and a shoutout to Medium Build.Impossible Things is available now on all streaming platforms. Trumpet player and vocalist Jennifer Hartswick sits down with us in the green room at Jazz Fest to talk about her decades-long love affair with New Orleans — a city she calls "its own planet" — and the musical relationships that have shaped her career. Jennifer recounts her first New Orleans gig at the Maple Leaf, an overnight set that ran from 3am to sunrise, and reflects on what it took to earn that kind of audience. She shares the story of meeting Christian McBride, a musician she idolized as a kid, and forming what she describes as an instant soul bond. And she tells us about the night she met Phil Lesh — he didn't know who she was, noticed her trumpet in the green room, and the conversation that followed led to years of playing together in Phil & Friends. We also talk about High Sierra Music Festival's move to a new home in Grass Valley, and why Jennifer believes this inaugural year there is going to be something special. Tim Conway Jr Show Hour 4 (6.16) In this episode, we’re kicking things off with World Cup fans visiting from all over the world — and reminding us just how great America really is. From the beauty of the country to the kindness of Americans, sometimes it takes visitors to help us appreciate what we have right in front of us. Then it’s time for a Shark PSA: if you go into the ocean, you may legitimately be swimming with sharks. With El Niño conditions bringing a possible surge in shark activity, we break down why great whites may be closer than you think — and why the ocean is still their home, not ours. Next, we head to West Hollywood for a little nightlife buzz as lesbian bars make a comeback, including SweetWater, the new WeHo hotspot bringing community, cocktails, and culture back to the scene. And finally: Alcohol Cannnnnzz, OnlyFanzzz, Lotta Manzzzz, and Also-Ranzzz. We dive into the viral neighborhood drama surrounding alleged influencer activity, content creators, party litter, and those infamous BuzzBallz-style alcohol cans making everyone ask: what exactly is going on over there? Trending Keywords: World Cup fans, America is beautiful, American kindness, USA travel, patriotic podcast, shark PSA, swimming with sharks, great white sharks, El Niño sharks, shark surge, ocean safety, California sharks, lesbian bars, SweetWater WeHo, West Hollywood nightlife, LGBTQ nightlife, OnlyFans house, influencer drama, content creators, BuzzBallz, alcohol cans, viral neighborhood drama, Lotta Colada, trending news, pop culture podcast, viral stories See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Tim Conway Jr. Show Hour 1 (6.16) In this episode, we’re diving into some of the biggest, boldest, and most talked-about stories making waves right now. First, five people have been arrested after the FBI reportedly foiled a shocking drone and sniper plot connected to White House Fight Night. Then, we welcome World Cup fans to America as visitors praise the country’s beauty and the kindness of Americans. While local news often focuses on what is wrong, today we’re taking a moment to say: be proud of this country. Next, we head to the coast to talk about great white shark nurseries, where the hot spots are, and why California could see a major surge in sharks with El Niño conditions on the way. From shark bite power to why sharks usually reject humans as prey, we break down the fascinating facts behind one of the ocean’s most misunderstood predators. We also talk emergency preparedness as tectonic stress along Southern California’s San Andreas and San Jacinto fault systems reaches alarming levels. Get water. Store water. Be ready. And to close things out, West Hollywood gets a fresh new nightlife destination with the opening of SweetWater, a new lesbian bar bringing community, culture, and celebration to WeHo. Don't forget to like, subscribe and leave us a comment! The three of us finally get into something that's been on the calendar for a while: what actually makes a good Les Paul. Zach brings out all his Les Pauls, Rhett has his R9, and Addison shows off the 2007 Studio Faded he's had since he was 15. We talk about what to listen and feel for when you're shopping — weight, acoustic resonance, how the D and G strings behave, and why the nut is almost always the reason your Les Paul won't stay in tune. Plus PAF pickup obsession, the case for unpotted pickups, top wrapping, tone woods, and why the inconsistency of Gibsons is a feature, not a bug. Hot take this week from Nicholas: flame tops and figured maple are ugly, and matching headstocks make a guitar look cheap. We're split. Mixing Music with Dee Kei | Audio Production, Technical Tips, & Mindset
In this solo episode, Dee Kei gets honest about something nobody in the audio world really wants to say out loud — talent is the most common thing in this industry, and it's rarely what separates the engineers who are thriving from the ones who are struggling. After years of working alongside incredibly gifted mixers who can't keep the lights on, and watching others with average ears build sustainable careers, the pattern is clear: the gap isn't in the DAW.Dee breaks down the real reasons talented engineers stay stuck — from waiting until they feel "ready," to undercharging out of insecurity, to treating their craft like a hobby instead of a business. He talks about the trap of being busy without being strategic, what it actually takes to build a referral pipeline, and why isolation might be the most career-limiting thing a mixer can do.This one is a mindset episode, but it's also practical. Every point has a fix — and none of them require you to get better at mixing.SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PATREON FOR EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!SUBSCRIBE TO YOUTUBEJoin the ‘Mixing Music Podcast' Discord!HIRE DEE KEIHIRE LUHIRE JAMESFind Dee Kei and Lu on Social Media:Instagram: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLu @JamesParrishMixesTwitter: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLuThe Mixing Music Podcast is sponsored by Izotope, Antares (Auto Tune), Sweetwater, Plugin Boutique, Lauten Audio, Filepass, & CanvaThe Mixing Music Podcast is a video and audio series on the art of music production and post-production. Recorded live at Bayou Boogaloo during Jazz Fest in New Orleans — two of our favorites in one green room. Eric Krasno (Soulive, Lettuce) and Wally Ingram (percussionist, collaborator extraordinaire) join us for a wide-ranging conversation as the golden-hour sun goes down over the bayou. We get into the deep connection between the Grateful Dead world and New Orleans music, what it was like for Eric to join Phil Lesh on stage with no rehearsal and an 80-song set list, and how Wally ended up on the Bob & Phil duo tour with literally a djembe and a pair of bongos. Plus: how Eric produced Aaron Neville's Grammy-winning album Apache, the story of Lawrence sleeping on his studio floor before they were famous, his new music collaboration platform Ensemble, and why Billy Kreutzmann plays like a New Orleans drummer. Oh, and Eric's five-year-old son is really into James Brown right now. Just FYI.

Mixing Music with Dee Kei | Audio Production, Technical Tips, & Mindset
In this episode, Dee Kei breaks down how he actually thinks about mixing vocals — and it's probably not what you'd expect. Before touching a plugin, an EQ, or a compressor, the most important step is understanding the intention behind the song. Is it a club banger or an intimate bedroom record? A polished pop vocal or something raw that's supposed to feel that way? Dee explains why blindly applying mixing techniques without reading context is the number one mistake engineers at every level make. From there, he dives into the fundamentals: how low-mids shape intimacy versus energy, why most beginners over-de-ess their vocals, when heavy compression works in your favor and when it fights the song, and how vocal placement in the mix is determined by the density and genre of the track. He also gets real about something not enough people talk about — the rise of intentionally "rough" sounding mixes that are racking up streams, and what that means for how you serve your clients.Whether you're a bedroom producer mixing your first song or a working engineer looking to sharpen your instincts, this episode will shift how you approach every vocal session.SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PATREON FOR EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!SUBSCRIBE TO YOUTUBEJoin the ‘Mixing Music Podcast' Discord!HIRE DEE KEIHIRE LUHIRE JAMESFind Dee Kei and Lu on Social Media:Instagram: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLu @JamesParrishMixesTwitter: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLuThe Mixing Music Podcast is sponsored by Izotope, Antares (Auto Tune), Sweetwater, Plugin Boutique, Lauten Audio, Filepass, & CanvaThe Mixing Music Podcast is a video and audio series on the art of music production and post-production. Don't forget to like, subscribe and leave us a comment! All three of us are back. Rhett's finally home after five weeks on the road with The Midnight, Addison has moved back to Kansas City (into the exact same house), and Zach is mid-kitchen renovation with no internet. It's fine. Everything's fine. Hot take this week: why is basically every guitar pick the same teardrop shape? We get into pick materials, shapes, Blue Chips, the Carol Kaye felt pick thing, and the Tom Bukovac acoustic strumming trick you probably haven't tried. Then things get serious. Fender has issued cease and desist letters to boutique S-style guitar builders across the EU, demanding they stop manufacturing, recall sold instruments, and destroy infringing inventory — all by Memorial Day. We dig into what's actually happening legally, why this almost certainly won't hold up, what it says about who's really running Fender now, and why LSL has launched a GoFundMe to fight back. We also talk through the vintage guitar market losing its mind — including a 1959 ES-335 at Carter Vintage listed at $107,000 — and dip a rig from Cody in Portland, who built his own SG during COVID and put Gibson on the headstock. In this deeply personal episode of The Daily Grateful with Michael Crose, Michael takes listeners on a heartfelt journey through rock-and-roll history, backstage memories, and unexpected friendships with legendary musicians. From meeting Terry Kirkman of The Association to unforgettable encounters with Nancy Nevins of Sweetwater, this episode explores what happens after the spotlight fades. Michael shares touching stories from the Miami Pop Festival, Woodstock-era music culture, and candid conversations about royalties, fame, addiction recovery, and growing older. Along the way, he reflects on gratitude for human connection, music that shaped generations, and the privilege of crossing paths with artists who left lasting impressions on his life. Funny, nostalgic, emotional, and completely unplanned, this is storytelling at its most authentic.#DailyGrateful #MichaelCrose #ClassicRock #Woodstock #TerryKirkman #NancyNevins #Sweetwater #TheAssociation #RockHistory #MusicMemories #PodcastLife

Rhett calls in from the road, one month into The Midnight's tour. Their drummer landed in the hospital mid-tour, a monitor engineer stepped in off the couch to save the show, and a fill-in arrived on 17 hours notice and crushed it. Also: Rhett blew up a Divided by 13 at Brooklyn Paramount and accidentally came home with a Kirk Hammett signature V. Back in Nashville, Zach is keeping Mythos running and trying not to think too hard about it. We dig into the Chase Bliss Big Time, Rhett unboxes the CXM 1978, and we settle the debate on whether beginners should factor in resale value when buying their first guitar. Yngwie Malmsteen has had a long career, so if you don't have time for the whole discography, there's one record that every guitar player owes it to themselves to rock out to at full blast. Whether or not you decide to commit yourself to some arpeggio exercises straight from hell, you'll no doubt get the gist of the Swedish-born guitarist's mission statement. In this episode, we're talking about all things Yngwie and scalloped frets and wondering why we don't see any young indie rockers reppin' his signature model Strat.Sponsored by Rocky Mountain Slides: rockymountainslides.comFollow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. In this mini episode, Sheyahshe provides an update on the case of Ella Mae Begay, a Navajo elder who disappeared from her home in Sweetwater, Arizona in June 2021.After a federal judge ruled a key confession inadmissible in 2024, prosecutors moved forward with a plea agreement that would have allowed Preston Henry Tolth to plead guilty to a single robbery charge, potentially avoiding additional prison time and any future prosecution for murder or manslaughter.Earlier this month, a U.S. District Court judge rejected that agreement following testimony from Begay's family, who continue to seek accountability and the return of their loved one.Sources:https://apnews.com/article/ella-mae-begay-missing-murdered-indigenous-tolth-ddef9fd5bdaf4b29a0553fd532ead458https://www.abqjournal.com/news/suspect-enters-new-guilty-plea-in-the-case-of-missing-navajo-grandmother/3024048https://www.usnews.com/news/us/articles/2026-04-09/judge-rejects-plea-agreement-in-case-of-missing-navajo-elder-ella-mae-begaySupport the show

Mixing Music with Dee Kei | Audio Production, Technical Tips, & Mindset
In Episode 370 of the Mixing Music Podcast, Dee Kei and Lu continue their true-or-false format and dig into even more of the beliefs, myths, and gray areas that shape music production and audio careers. This round covers everything from whether you should mix and master your own music, to whether analog gear is really better, whether Pro Tools still matters, and whether networking outweighs skill. They also get into social media, working for free early in your career, standing out in a crowded industry, perfectionism, arrangement vs mix importance, and what actually makes a great mixer. One of the strongest themes in the episode is that audio is never just technical. Great mixing is also about psychology, emotion, decision-making, and understanding how to help artists feel confident in what they are making. This is a sharp, practical episode for engineers, producers, and artists who want more nuance than the usual black-and-white advice. In this episode, I sit down with my friend and professional guitarist Ryan Jones. Ryan shares his journey from Fort Wayne, Indiana to studying music in California, connecting with Christian artist Tommy Walker, and eventually touring and recording at a professional level. We talk about what it's really like to work as a guitarist on the road and in the studio, including Ryan's move to Nashville in 2014, where he built a career doing session work and collaborating with producer and drummer Scott Williamson. Then everything changed. When COVID hit, the music industry ground to a halt overnight. Ryan shares how that disruption forced him to rethink his path, leading him to develop new skills as a software developer and eventually land a role at Sweetwater—bringing him full circle back to his hometown. Along the way, we also dig into: • What the recording process is really like for working guitarists • Amp tones and how pros think about sound • Real amps vs. modelers—what actually matters • How to adapt when your music career takes an unexpected turn This is an honest, behind-the-scenes look at the life of a working guitarist—and what it takes to keep moving forward when things don't go as planned. Mixing Music with Dee Kei | Audio Production, Technical Tips, & Mindset
In Episode 369 of the Mixing Music Podcast, Dee Kei and Lu take a true-or-false format and use it to unpack some of the biggest myths and half-truths in music, mixing, and the audio industry. What starts with a Discord question about whether clients should ever receive a mix you are not proud of turns into a bigger conversation about taste, service, flexibility, and what great engineers actually do.They dig into whether natural talent is required to become great at music, whether a mix that sounds good in mono sounds good everywhere, whether subs should always be mono, whether success is measured by streams, whether artists can really make a living from Spotify, and whether you have to move to LA to make it in music. They also touch on reference tracks, client expectations, and how personal ego can distort the way people think about careers and craft. This is a fun but honest episode that mixes hot takes with real nuance, especially for engineers, producers, and artists trying to think more clearly about success, taste, and what actually matters in music.
