We're so used to the idea of art being hung in museums or on our walls, that we forget that we have may have hundreds or thousands of pieces of art hiding in plain sight – on shelves in our record or CD collections. Welcome to episode 99 of See Hear Podcast. Anytime you go exploring through your local record or CD store, before you even hear the music, the potential to draw you to an album you're unfamiliar with is the cover art. They can be futuristic paintings, posed photos, extravagant, plain, in questionable taste, exciting or dull. The designer is the person the musicians have entrusted to be the gateway to their own work. Kevin Hosmann is an album cover designer and first time film maker. He has released a documentary paying tribute to his colleagues in the design profession. He speaks to a lot of them, many who have designed many iconic covers over the course of popular music history, and many who have just designed functional covers. The film explores their experiences and the history of this artform. Does the cover art always say something about the music? How much does an album's iconic status relate to the front (or rear) cover? How have things changed in the streaming age? Kevin's film is a fascinating exploration into a side of the music business we don't always consider, but is hugely important. Bernie and I were fascinated hearing him talk about his own experiences as a cover designer (Beastie Boys, Ice Cube) as well as telling stories about giants in the field like Reid Miles, Roger Dean and Tom Wilkes. Tune in, then watch the film – you'll be very entertained, The film is streaming on Prime or in England on Sky Arts International. You can keep up with album cover talk at the film's Facebook site: https://www.facebook.com/THE-ALBUM-1514923212059261/If you've been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. In the late 1970s, punk music was particularly popular amongst teenagers. In New York City, they filled clubs like CBGB, Max's Kansas City, Hurrah, and TR3. They also formed bands. Tim Sommer, journalist and former record executive, recently wrote about this era of New York City music history for the New York Times in the article "In the Late '70s, Teen Punks Ruled New York. These Are Their Stories." He joins us to discuss the piece alongside Kate Schellenbach, founding member of the Beastie Boys and drummer for Luscious Jackson who was a teenage punk in the 70s herself. Plus, we take your calls of your memories of the 70s New York punk scene.

I don't even want to do an introduction because I just want to get into these stories. I'm joined by Simon “Spence” Dudfield and Martyn Goodacre of Fabulous. They exploded and flamed out in a span of 18 months. But they accumulated a lifetime of stories in that blink of an eye! They weren't even musicians when they started the band. They're STILL not musicians! They had somewhere between 8-10 bassists in that year and a half. They even wrote a song about one. Well, it was Craig Pike and he didn't technically join the band because he died. But they DID have Keanu Reeves in the band for a minute, after stuffing him in the trunk of their car. Another member just wandered off stage, mid-gig, never to be seen again…almost. And speaking of shows, theirs were so volatile that they only lasted 10-15 minutes and were banned from the majority of venues they played. They were kidnapped and beaten after one particularly intense show. They blew off chances to work with Andy Weatherall, Rick Rubin, & The Beastie Boys. It is a short lived musical career filled with destruction, fights, and regret. And it's possibly the most insane collection of stories I have ever heard in one place. 1987 - February: Steve Winwood “Back in the High Life”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 25, 2022 48:51

Steve Winwood was a well known vocalist and guitarist throughout the rock era due to his contributions to the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, and Blind Faith.  His solo career would hit its high water mark with his fourth studio album, Back in the High Life.  It was originally released in June 1986, and we are featuring it in February 1987 when the last single, “The Finer Things” was released and was headed up the charts.Winwood had seen success as a soloist previously, but his last US album hit had been in 1980 when “Arc of a Diver” hit number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart.  For this new album Winwood  turned to Ron Weisner as manager, who had worked with Madonna and Michael Jackson.  Weisner encouraged him to record in New York, away from his home where Winwood was having marital difficulties.  He also encouraged Winwood to sing from the front of the stage rather than from behind the keyboards, positioning him as more of a front man than keyboardist. To say the result was a success would be an understatement.  Five of the eight songs would be released as singles.  Winwood would become a household name with this album, crossing over to find success in pop rock and adult contemporary genres.Rob brings us this album, and friend of the show Bill Cook joins us while Bruce is out.The Finer ThingsThis song went to number 8 on the charts.  This synth-driven piece encourages people to take time to enjoy the moment.  While finer things are often thought to be luxury goods, Winwood instead portrays "finer things" in terms of relationships.  Split DecisionAnother single with a more rock-oriented feel, this track features Joe Walsh on guitar.  It went to number 3 on the U.S. charts. The lyrics reflect the idea that there are two faces to us - one confident, one not sure.  "One man puts the fire out, the other lights the fuse."Take It As It ComesThis is a deeper cut even though it was released as a single, and features a horn section.  The lyrics take a stoic approach to life, that we need to take the good and the bad as it comes.Back In the High Life AgainA huge hit on both pop and rock stations, this title track starts with Winwood playing a mandolin, and features James Taylor on background vocals.  This song would hit number 1 on the adult contemporary charts and number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.  These lyrics take a more positive tact than "Take It As It Comes," expressing confidence that we'll be back on top soon. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Winner Takes It All by Sammy Hagar (from the motion picture “Over the Top”Sylvester Stallone starred in this action movie focused on arm wrestling.  It was released in February 1987. STAFF PICKS:Stay the Night by Benjamin Orr Brian brings us a solo effort from former Cars bassist Benjamin Orr.  Both Cars front man Ric Ocasek and Orr had successful solo projects at the time.  This synth-heavy piece hit number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was Orr's only venture into the top 40.  Will You Still Love Me by ChicagoFriend of the show Bill Cook features a song off Chicago XVIII, their fifteenth studio album.  It is the second single from the album, and reached number 3 on the U.S. charts.  Jason Scheff, new vocalist and bassist for the band, sings lead in the place of Peter Cetera who had left the band to pursue a solo career. Fight For Your Right by the Beastie BoysWayne's staff pick rocks out with a an anthem from the debut album from the Beastie Boys, "Licensed to Ill."  It hit number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.  This song was intended as a parody of "party" and "attitude" themed songs, but it took on a life of its own as a legitimate "attitude" song.Ready Or Not by Lou GrammRob's finishes the staff picks with the front man from Foreigner.  This is the title track off Gramm's solo album, and it made it to number 7 on the rock charts.  It is the second single from the album.     NOVELTY TRACK:Secret Agent Man/James Bond is Back by Bruce WillisBruce Willis was starring in Moonlighting at the time, and parleyed this into some music singles including this one.

Michael Motta, is a former executive in the record business. He was instrumental in breaking open the careers of musicians like Snoop Dogg, Beastie Boys, Megadeath and Bonnie Raitt. After years in the business, he realized it was treacherous to his health and left after achieving major success. He also saw the systemic racism and inequality of music airtime, radio station resources. Listen to his story in this conversation on race. Today he is the regional manager of Mayweather Boxing and Fitness in Los Angeles, CA, USA. Michael considers himself a “a man for all nations.” He is African, Sicilian, Cuban, and Jewish. Raised in the Bronx by four strong Black women, he  learned to be a strong Black man. Key topics: [5:00] How he was bullied by different groups because of his skin color, not being white enough for the white kids and not dark enough for the Black kids. [7:12] Incredibly, Michael just two years ago that he is fifty-one percent Jewish. Hear how he found his Jewish father and a sister he didn't know he had. However before finding that out, he always had connections to Jewish people, and his son's mother is Jewish. [16:12] What made him finally decide to leave the music industry- Motta breaks down the systemic racism of the music industry and the segregation of the radio stations. [20:53] We talk some of our favorite genres of music along with artists we love [29:06] • White kids who listen to hip-hop but don't care about the politics, and still act racist towards people of color. They spend money on the music but don't understand history or the message. • Where to find conscious rap and hip-hop since it's not played on commercial radio or given airplay [34:50] • His experience in college at a mostly Jewish school [38:55] • What it's like being Black with light skin. How he wasn't accepted in different places and what he did to survive. [40:44] Race and racism and how it's about fear [41:37] Why he's bothered by gentrification and it's impact on non-white communities. [45:35] Solutions and suggestions to end racism and actions we can all take Guest BioA 20-year industry veteran, Michael hails from the Bronx and is of Black, Hispanic and Caucasian heritage.  He earned a scholarship to Brandeis where he played varsity basketball and then went on to earn an MBA at Boston College.  Mike is an accomplished martial artist, boxer and strength and conditioning coach – as well as an expert on nutrition counseling and healthy living -- all skills he attributes to his ability to combat stage four prostate cancer.  Prior to his fitness career Mike was an accomplished record industry executive and was head of promotion and marketing for four record labels, executive vice president for several film companies and is an accomplished screen writer.  He's the proud father of one son, Nick. Given that he'll celebrate his 44th birthday in 2022, it's crazy to think that Ben Lee has been part of the musical landscape for three decades. As a 14 year old his band Noise Addict were plucked from a Sydney garage and championed by acts like Sonic Youth and the Beastie Boys, introducing Ben to a worldwide audience and setting the platform for him to launch his solo career at the age of 16 Since then Ben has forged a career that can best be described as eclectic. He's released a children's album called Ben Lee Sings Songs About Islam For The Whole Family; co-written a musical called B Is For Beer; released a covers album paying tribute to the alternative acts he loved as a teen; made a largely instrumental album inspired by his experiments with Ayahuasca called Ayahuasca: Welcome To The Work; and then there were the hit alternative pop records like 2005's Awake Is The New Sleep. Add into the mix Ben's forays into acting, his quests for spiritual enlightenment and his work as a death doula, and it all adds up to one of the most colourful careers in modern music. We talk about it all in this interview, as well as Ben's new album, I'M FUN!, which is released on August 19.

Titres interprétés au Grand studio - Mama Roux (Dr John) Live RFI voir le clip  - Cha Dooky Doo, extrait Dr John (Triumvirate 1973) - Cha Dooky Doo, extrait de l'album Night Trippin - Such a Night (Dr John) voir vidéo RFI - Back To Back (Coltman/Pascaud) voir vidéo RFI.   Playlist de Hugh et Matthis - It'll all work out, de Blake Mills (Hugh) - Spoonful de Howlin' Wolf (Matthis) - Mellow Down Easy, de Little Walter (Hugh) - Zigzan, de Bombino (Matthis).   Line-up - Matthis Pascaud, guitare acoustique - Hugh Coltman, voix, harmonica & guitare acoustique. On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we look at the achievements, impacts, and allegations against the original Hip-Hop mogul, Russell Simmons. A young Simmons fell in love the new art form of rap and immediately took charge of the genre's future. He signed Kurtis Blow from his dorm room on to a label that didn't exist, and he hustled every DJ in New York until he got him a record deal.
