Welcome to 3 Bad Brothers, A Beastie Boys Breakdown. For the next 8 weeks, the Dad Bod Rap Pod crew and some special guests will be going album by album through the Beastie Boys' career. This week we are focused on Ad Rock, MCA and Mike D's first album, the wildly successful Licensed To Ill with insight from Dante Ross, who ran in the same circles as the Boys at this formative time in their lives. We will track the band from punk shows to NYC nightclubs, to arena tours, examining their rhymes, beats, cultural impact and more through discussion, interviews, and then score each album on a system we affectionately call the Rick Rubric. Licensed to Ill is thought of as one of rap music's early masterpieces, so we re-listen to the seminal album to see how it holds up nearly 40 years later as rap music, as the beginning of a vast and exploratory career, and as a product of early Def Jam Records, the so-called nerve center of the nascent hip-hop industry at the time. Huge thanks to Dante Ross for joining us to provide cultural context and crack jokes. Please tune in next week when we step through the doors of the cult classic Paul's Boutique. Totally 80s and 90s Recall

Ill Communication, released in 1994, marked a high point for the Beastie Boys, blending their signature irreverent style with genre-hopping experimentation. The album saw the trio—Mike D, MCA, and Ad-Rock—seamlessly fuse hardcore punk, jazz-funk, and old-school hip-hop, with the standout single “Sabotage” becoming an anthem of the era. Its explosive bassline, distorted guitars, and aggressive delivery captured the Beasties at their rawest and most innovative. At the same time, tracks like “Sure Shot” and “Root Down” paid homage to their b-boy roots with tight rhymes and slick DJ work from Mix Master Mike. The album wasn't just about sonic chaos—it carried deeper, more mature undertones, reflecting MCA's growing interest in Buddhism and activism. For many fans—and clearly for us here at Totally 80's and 90's Recall—Ill Communication stands as a definitive '90s album that refused to be boxed in. It's wild, funny, political, and endlessly replayable. From punk mosh pits to chill jazz instrumentals like “Sabrosa,” the Beastie Boys proved they weren't just rap pranksters from the '80s—they were legit musical craftsmen. The album captured the eclectic energy of the decade and the spirit of reinvention that defined the Beasties' career. Whether you're blasting “Sabotage” in your car or grooving to the funky vibes of “Flute Loop,” this one hits as hard now as it did in ‘94. We are so back. After a longer than expected hiatus to write, record, and produce our Beastie Boys miniseries (more on that in a moment) we are returning to the world of weekly indie rap podcasting with a special guest. We sometimes joke that DBRP started as a way for three old friends to share their love of classic rap music but at some point morphed into a show about how billy woods is really good at rapping. This week we are examining Golliwog, woods' latest album, including a long conversation with the Backwoodz label head himself. Topics include checking in on Vordul, the album's guest rappers especially Bruiser Wolf and Despot, how woods is dealing with his increasing notoriety, and some Bay Area restaurant recommendations not just for traveling hip-hop artists. woods also asks us to name our top 3 albums of his, after refusing to talk about his own catalog that way, but he does engage with us on some Backwoodz releases. Golliwog is a serious contender for Album of the Year, and it was a pleasure to break it down with one of our favorite MCs. Toward the end of the show we explain a bit about what we have been doing on hiatus. Starting next week we will be dropping an 8-part miniseries examining the Beastie Boys' storied career, breaking down each of their albums in our own discursive, punny way. We hope you'll join us on the ride as we High Plains Drift through their extensive catalog and try to figure out of they are good rappers or not. It's a more complicated question than it might seem so we invited friends of the show Date Ross, Cutso, Sean Kantrowitz, and Open Mike Eagle to get into it with us. Dad Bod Rap Pod is produced by Nate LeBlanc. Theme song by DEM ONE and Cutso. Guest booking by David Ma. Available on the internet by the good graces of Stony Island Audio.

Principal consultant with Crowdsafety.org since 2014, Steve toured with any number of big acts, Led Zeppelin, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beastie Boys among them, and came up with a formal showstop procedure while working with Oasis in the 1990s. It's something he's instigated 32 times around the world, “Never a problem. No injuries, no deaths, no problems with the promoters, the artists, and happy fans who go home safely”. In part two of our interview Arno Michaelis, we navigate the bizarre intersection of music, ideology, and redemption. If you've ever wondered how extremist movements actually work, this offers some great insight. Arno gives us the inside scoop on how a skinhead band like Centurion shifted 20,000 records whilst still getting royally ripped off by their label boss. We also chat about right wing ideology and symbolism, as Arno discusses how antisemitism serves as what "the connective tissue" that binds seemingly opposing extremist groups together. We delve into the psychological mechanics too. Taking in everything from Norse fantasy to Tolkien, as well as the very large psychological leaps bands like Skrewdriver had to take to justify playing rock n roll music and Jewish cabaret tunes. Arno also talks about how the music of the Beastie Boys was something of a saving grace as he exited the movement, and he tells us about how a MySpace message in the early 00s regarding his former band, Centurion, led him to reckon with the legacy of poison he created. Whilst also giving him the impetus to try to be a force for good in the world. Grab a cuppa and dive in. Bettina from Laurel Glen Vineyard is our guest on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. Bettina's father Peter M. F. Sichel recently passed away at 102. He was an old friend of Dan Berger who credits him with great contributions to winemaking, in Germany and in the US. Dan wrote a review of Peter's book called “The Secrets of My Life: Vintner, Soldier, Prisoner, Spy.” He was instrumental in making Blue Nun wine popular, a dry white wine from Germany. Dan describes the story of Blue Nun as a story of the Atomic Age. There is a bottle of it on the cover of the Fleetwood Mac album Rumors and there is a Beastie Boys song called Blue Nun. Blue Nun was very popular in the 1970s. The brand ran radio advertisements nationally that were written and recorded by Stiller & Meara. Here is one of them: https://calwinecountry.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/BLUE-NUN-1970-Stiller-Meara.mp3 Laurel Glen is on top of Sonoma Mountain. It is a remarkable property. The fact that people would plant Cabernet up there is “outrageous” says Dan. It makes a special kind of wine. Bettina says it's a great site for Cabernet. In the 1990s, Cabernet was a much more restrained, a low-alcohol wine with high acidity. That is still the Lauren Glen style. Sonoma Mountain AVA The vineyard was first planted to Cabernet in the 1960s. They are located on a plateau. The Sonoma Mountain AVA is on the east side of the mountain. The west side of the mountain is now the Petaluma Gap AVA. The mountain blocks the wind and fog. They don't achieve the degree of ripeness that Napa Cabernets do, which produces what Dan calls a richer, oaky, more concentrated and higher in alcohol. California Wine Country is brought to you by Rodney Strong Vineyards and Davis Bynum Wines. Next for tasting is a Riesling that comes from a vineyard on the central coast near Monterrey. They are the last grapes that come into the winery, after all the other grapes. That shows what a long maturation process these grapes require. Dan can think of only about 5 vineyards in California that produce high quality dry Riesling and this is one of them. They make three Cabernets, a Rosé and some Gruner Veltliner.

It's not too often that a story will make a connection between Linda McCartney, The Beastie Boys and The Clash, but this month's film does just that. Welcome to episode 126 of See Hear Podcast. When the average person is asked to name a single important figure in reggae music, they'll most likely say Bob Marley. Without taking away from his importance, reggae's production giant, who helped Marley in his early years, was Lee “Scratch” Perry. For this episode, we look at a 2008 documentary called The Upsetter: The Life and Music of Lee Scratch Perry. He was born in a rural area of Jamaica, but after working on a job to build a road in the western region of the island, he claimed to have found a connection between the sound of the rocks he helped move and the sound of music – sure beats the usual musician story of stealing their sibling's record collection. The film certainly tells a story, but is also more of a character study about Perry. He was a musical innovator being an early innovator in dub reggae. He'd recorded and produced music that was ska and rocksteady reggae, but it's his experiments in dub he's most remembered for. He's also remembered for burning down his beloved music studio because a rubber ball placed on his console had been moved – okay, the story's a little more complex than that. Was he eccentric? Was he a charlatan? Was he really named Pipecock Jackson, and looking to become American president? The film only looks to Perry for discussion, so without other talking heads, we ask if he's a reliable narrator. Kerry, Tim and I discuss Rastafarianism, the link to Sun Ra, sound systems, our connections to reggae music, and the scary connection to Dennis Wilson. Please join us for a fun conversation. You can find the film on Kanopy, but our conversation can be listened to independent of the film. ~~~ TL;DR: It's an updated remake of a Beastie Boys parody about Dr. Demento and Whimsical Will. ~~~ One of the most iconic 'Side 1, Track 1' songs in the history of Generation X is the first song on the legendary 1986 Diamond Certified debut album by the Beastie Boys "Licensed To Ill", titled "Rhymin' And Stealin'". ... Far less iconic is the great Luke Ski's 1997 Certified Plastic sophomore album "Shadows Of The Bunghole". For that album, I had the oh-so-clever idea to begin the album with a parody of "Rhymin' And Stealin'", with the gag being that if someone put the disc in and started playing it, another person nearby hearing the album start would be fooled into thinking the album playing was "Licensed To Ill", and then when the first sound bites and lyrics dropped, they would be overcome with a feeling of jocular bamboozlement. Whether or not that ever occurred in real life is unknown and assumed not ever have actually happened. After nearly 2 years of finally being able to listen to "The Dr. Demento Show" on the actual radio, I felt the need to pay tribute to the show, to Dr. Demento (a.k.a. Barret Hansen) himself, as well as the weekly purveyor of the "Demented News" on the show, "Whimsical Will" Simpson. So that led me to make a parody of the aforementioned Beastie's song, titling mine "The Doctor And William". I call this type of song a 'forced parody', in which there is no clever wordplay or other logical or parallel connection between the original song and subject matter being discussed in the parody, making it obvious that the author (in this case, me) just REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted to parody THAT SONG about THAT SUBJECT despite the fact that it doesn't make any sense to do so intellectually. So, having copped to that, I still really liked what I did with it, with my other MCs making up my Beastie parody trio being J. Styles (Jason Stahl, best friend since the 4th grade) and DJ Skrabble (my brother J.T. Sienkowski). The good Doctor never played this track on his show, but Whimsical Will did report on the song during the July 6th, 1997 edition of the Demented News. 27 years later, an impending celebration of Dr. Demento's birthday made me think it would be fun to give this track an update and perform it live at the celebration with the help of some friends. So I commissioned Professor Shyguy to make a new backing track (and also mix this final studio version), so that I, the great Luke Ski (doing the King Ad-Rock parts), along with Devo Spice (MCA) and Tony Goldmark (Mike D.), and also along with the chanting assistance of Chris Mezzolesta of Power Salad, Insane Ian, and ShoEboX of Worm Quartet, performed it for Dr. D. to the jocular bamboozlement of everyone in attendance. In conclusion, for the millionth time, thank you to Barret Hansen, a.k.a. Dr. Demento, and "Whimsical Will" Simpson, for bringing so much joy, laughter, and found family together with your decades upon decades of demented news, mad music, and crazy comedy. We owe it all to you. And we will never ever forget to stay deee-mented! Will the good Doctor play "The Doctor And William (2025 Edition)" on his show? Perhaps he might if the fans REQUEST for him to play it, either from "The Dr. Demento Show" Request Page, or post it with the word REQUEST at The OFFICIAL Dr. Demento Show Facebook Page!

NBN host Hollay Ghadery speaks with cultural icons, Anne Waldman (The Iovis Trilogy: Colors in the Mechanism of Concealment) and Andrew Whiteman (Broken Social Scene) who have collaborated to create Your Devotee in Rags—a metamorphic sonic poetry LP released by Siren Recordings in 2025 and is available from Spotify. The conversation starts with a discussion of Anne's epic, The Iovis Trilogy (Coffee House Press, 2011). Published for the first time in its entirety, this major epic poem assures Anne Waldman's place in the pantheon of contemporary poetry. The Iovis Trilogy, Waldman's monumental feminist epic, traverses epochs, cultures, and genres to create a visionary call to poetic arms. Iovis details the misdeeds of the Patriarch, and with a fierce imagination queries and subverts his warmongering. All of Waldman's themes come into focus—friendship, motherhood, politics, and Buddhist wisdom. This is epic poetry that goes beyond the old injunction “to include history”—its effort is to change history. Your Devotee in Rags is a missive to this age of patriarchal power, its songs and poems are designed to specifically confront that power and hold it to account. Taking such activist inspiration from musicians like Lido Pimienta and Tanya Tagaaq, musically YDIR blends acoustic and electronic genres, waltzes, laments, and Pauls Boutique-era Beastie Boys mash-ups all with the intent of creating a new artistic headspace: sonic poetry. The cultural direction is forward, the earbuds open up the stereo field, listening to YDIR is, in a word, empowering. More about Your Devotee in Rags: Your Devotee in Rags is a sonic poetry collaboration between Anne Waldman and Andrew Whiteman; an act of desire and metamorphosis expanding the performative vision of being at the horizon of new experience, stripped down, exploring the turf, through poetry and spiritual yearning. Anne says: “Wizard Hal Willner would be proud of us companions in the vibrational matrix. Comrades in a studio of subtle suspense, and where were we headed? A magnificent voyage! Tender, rugged, true. I met Andrew Whiteman, genius player, composer, scholar, in one of Hal's unpredictable alchemical laboratories. We instantly bonded as mavens of poetry and its attendant orality, dedicated to the passion of epic life that is the source of this album, the 1000 plus pages of the feminist canto: Iovis Trilogy: Colors in the Mechanism of Concealment; passages plucked to be re-imagined in ambient explosive word-sound. On the Yantzse, in a strip club, a maelstrom of memory honoring precursor male poets, dressed in the rags of Celtic hags, so much more as mendicant, witty siren, compassionate lover, exploding empires of patriarchy and war. A kind of mythic hospitality.” Andrew says: “It was filmmaker Ron Mann and producer Hal Wilner who showed me the way. Hal was my guiding presence—whip smart, funny, gentle, empathic. This album is dedicated to him.” More about Anne Waldman: Anne Waldman is a living legend. Poet, performer, professor, editor, cultural activist, grandmother, and co-founder with Allen Ginsberg of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics. Former director of the Poetry Project. Tireless author of over 40 books, her trademark energy coils ever outward, always seeking to reveal the four-fold vision that we have largely lost. He talks about his favorite bands, particularly Akron Family and other experimental groups, often performing at DIY venues like Silent Barn and emphasizing how these experiences felt more personal and impactful. The conversation shifts to Jesse's walking tours, which often focus on the punk and post-punk scenes in NYC, featuring iconic sites like CBGB. He discusses the importance of understanding the human and local context behind legendary music and bands, offering a more tangible and relatable connection to this history. His tours aim to demystify the grandiosity of famous musicians by highlighting their humble beginnings in intimate settings. Finally, Jesse talks about his book and its evolution from his extensive tours and Instagram presence, which caught the attention of his editor in 2019.
