Nick Lloyd. Guest Nick Lloyd explores the strategic impasse of late 1915, specifically during the Second Battle of Champagne. He notes that both Joffre and Falkenhayn began to realize that traditional breakthroughs were becoming impossible, yet commanders remained reluctant to abandon the dream of decisive maneuver. Lloyd describes trench warfare not as a siege, but as a "constant evolution" where every Allied innovation was met by a thickened German defense of pillboxes and deep zones. This segment highlights the human element of command through General Noël de Castelnau, a deeply religious and charismatic figure who personally suffered the war's horrors, losing three sons in the conflict. Lloyd aims to humanize these historical figures, showing them as individuals grappling with impossible dilemmas in a brutal industrial war. The narrative emphasizes that the stalemate was not due to simple incompetence, but a logical, albeit bloody, response to the defensive technologies and tactical developments of the era. 61914 RFC

In April 1989, a newspaper clipping about an art exhibit landed in the mailbox of the Rev. Donald Wildmon, the founder of a conservative evangelical group, the American Family Association. Partly funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the exhibit included a now-infamous photograph by Andres Serrano that showed a crucifix submerged in Serrano's own urine. Incensed, Wildmon sent a copy of the photo to every member of Congress, setting off a battle led by the Christian right over what contemporary art could be and who should receive federal funding for it. Isaac Butler, an author and cultural historian, walks through this and other pivotal moments in the culture wars of the 1980s and 1990s in his new book, “The Perfect Moment: God, Sex, Art and the Birth of America's Culture Wars.” Butler spoke to the Book Review's editor, Gilbert Cruz, about how these fights unfolded and what they meant for the artists themselves. He sat down to write the book, he said, when “it really felt like the culture wars of the '80s and '90s that I grew up in were repeating again.” Books and plays discussed on this episode: “The Perfect Moment: God, Sex, Art and the Birth of America's Culture Wars,” by Isaac Butler “Measure for Measure,” by William Shakespeare “Transgressions: The Offences of Art,” by Anthony Julius “It Was Vulgar and It Was Beautiful: How AIDS Activists Used Art to Fight a Pandemic,” by Jack Lowery “The Devil Finds Work,” by James Baldwin “Fire in the Belly: The Life and Times of David Wojnarowicz,” by Cynthia Carr “Elia Kazan: A Life,” by Elia Kazan “Fear No Pharaoh: American Jews, the Civil War and the Fight to End Slavery,” by Richard Kreitner “The Kindness of Strangers,” by Salka Viertel “The Talmud: A Biography,” by Barry Scott Wimpfheimer “My Last Sigh,” by Luis Buñuel Listen to and Follow ‘The Book Review' Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Amazon Music | YouTube | iHeartRadio Unlock full access to New York Times podcasts, and explore everything from politics to pop culture. In part two, Travis takes us back in time to Western New York State during the beginning of the Jacksonian era. The plans of 50-year-old William Morgan to publish Masonic secrets turned into one of America's first nationwide true-crime media frenzies. After Morgan and printer David C. Miller threatened to expose the inner workings of Freemasonry, local Masons responded with lawsuits, surveillance, sabotage, armed mobs, bogus warrants, arson attempts, kidnapping, and possibly Morgan's murder in the Niagara River.  This episode follows the story from Batavia taverns and print shops to the Ontario County jail, the road to Rochester, the failed Canadian handoff, and the grim stone powder magazine at Old Fort Niagara where Morgan was last known to be held. We also dig into the forgotten role of David C. Miller, the “Masonic spy” Daniel Johns, the propaganda war between Masons and Anti-Masons, and how the scandal helped create the first major third party in American politics. The Hoop Pole Knights Abridged version of a 19th Century Anti-Masonic Song Some poets sing in epic strains, Of warriors and their fates, And some that rise and some that fall, Of kingdoms and of states; But hark ! the while in loftier song, And more sublimely grand, I sing to all the listening world The brave Masonic Band. The world was still, and wonders rare, Save now and then a dream Of railroads, and of side canals, And guns that go by steam; When Morgan swore a mighty oath, In spite of friends or foes, That he, for cash or conscience' sake, Would Masonry disclose And Miller swore to print the tale, And spread it far and near, That all the blind on earth might see, And all the deaf might hear; That from the greatest to the least, By Scripture rule, forsooth, That all should come to knowledge of The hidden light of truth. Then hell broke loose, and all the host Of Masons circled round, To kidnap both, destroy the book, Or burn Batavia down; And fury seized on many a brain, And vengeance seemed to start, In room of Love and Charity, From many a Mason's heart. And then the General Hoop-pole Knight, Renowned for chivalry, Began to feel that feather grow, Called popularity ; And how if he succeeded well By prowess in the fight, That he should be a Senator, As well as leading Knight: "And cried, ' Arise my friends, arise ! With pistols, swords, and dirks, Hoop-poles and knives, and cudgels strong, Prepared for bloody works; Without regard to powers that be, Or laws that men devise, On Miller, seize, and seize the book-- Succeed, or sacrifice.' On foot, on horse, in wagons stored, They marched ten miles or more, To guard their victim of revenge, And triumph in his gore; The while the people rose in strength, With blood at boiling heat, And sent him back to printing books, And made the band retreat. Nay, since the days of Don Quixote, When windmills were his foe, There has not been a scene like this, Unless in shades below; And even Don would laugh, and shake His sides till in distress, Had he but seen the Yankee Knights Attack a Printing Press.

Who am I, and how did I end up investigating death for a living? In this very first episode of Pushing Up Lilies, I'm sharing my story, from my path into nursing to becoming a Forensic Nurse Death Investigator. I'll talk about what drew me to this unique profession, what it's really like to investigate deaths, and why I felt called to create this podcast. Over the years, I've responded to countless death scenes, worked alongside law enforcement, medical examiners, and families experiencing unimaginable loss. Those experiences have taught me that every death has a story, and understanding that story requires compassion, science, careful investigation, and sometimes asking difficult questions. Pushing Up Lilies was created to give listeners an honest look behind the scenes of death investigation. Whether you're fascinated by forensic science, curious about how cases are solved, or simply interested in the realities of this profession, I hope this podcast helps educate, inspire, and answer questions you've always wondered about. If you're new here, welcome. This episode is the perfect place to begin. If you've been listening for a while, thank you for being part of this journey. I'm so glad you're here. Join me as I share the story behind the microphone, and the path that led me to Pushing Up Lilies.

Warm Thoughts

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 9, 2026 3:25

It is interesting to know that Father's Day, which this year will be celebrated on June 16th, was, ironically, inspired by a Mother's Day sermon. Mrs. John Bruce Dodd, a Spokane Washington artist, is credited with fostering Father's Day. She got the idea while listening to her minister deliver an impassioned sermon on motherhood. Mrs. Dodd's mother had died young, so her father had to raise 6 children alone. As she listened to the minister, praise mothers for the hardship they endured in raising their children and tending to all the family needs. She reflected on her father's sacrifices, and speculated that there must be other fathers whose similar sacrifices went unrecognized. In a letter to the president of the Spokane Ministerial Association, Mrs. Dodd proposed a day to honor fathers. She suggested June 5th, her father's birthday, the association approved the idea, and the Spokane YMCA publicized it. However, the suggested date didn't allow the ministers enough time to prepare sermons, so the celebrated was scheduled for the 3rd Sunday in June. Thursday on June 19th, 1910. Spokane became the 1st city to honor fathers with a special day. A strong push for the National Father's Day came from Harry C. Meek, a president of the Uptown Lions Club of Chicago. Through the lions, or though the lions crowned him the originator of Father's Day, Meek admitted that the idea 1st occurred to him in 1915. 5 years after Mrs. Dodd's suggestion. He suggested it in speeches before several Lions Clubs, and the idea caught on. The following year, President Wilson's participation in Father's Day ceremony by pressing the button in the nation's capital which unfurled the flag in Spokane. Despite this national gesture, many sections of the country did not take part. President Coolidge also showed interest in creating a national day to establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children while in office. And in 1936, the National Father's Day committee was formed in New York City to promote the celebration actively on the national level. It was in 1957 that Senator Margaret Chase Smith stated that the official recognition of Mother's Day required that Father's Day receive the same honor. She stated that, “Congress has been guilty now for 40 years of the worst possible oversight, to say the least, perpetuated against the gallant of fathers, young and old of our land,” she said in her proposal. It was in 1972, the long wait for a national recognition came to an end when President Nixon signed the congressional resolution giving Father's Day the same status as Mother's Day. And so, now we know the rest of the story about Father's Day. Celebrate Father's Day, 2002. Warm Thoughts from the Little Home on the Prairie Over a Cup of Tea Written by Dr. Luetta G Werner. Patrick K. O'Donnell recounts how between 7:20 and 8:00 a.m., the Rangers began their assault using rocket-propelled grappling hooks to fire wet ropes up the 90-foot cliffs. The climb was conducted under intense fire from German MG42machine guns and "potato masher" hand grenades lobbed from above. Sergeant Len Lomell was shot through the side during the ascent but continued to the summit, which he described as looking like the cratered surface of the moon due to the preceding bombardments. The Rangers utilized the craters and ruins for cover, fighting through a maze of tunnels and bunkers against defenders who remained entrenched in an underground labyrinth. Upon reaching the designated casemates, the Rangers discovered the Germans had moved the massive guns to an apple orchard 700 yards inland, leaving telephone poles in their place as decoys. Acting on his own initiative, Lomell followed tire tracks leading away from the casemates and discovered the guns hidden under nets in the orchard. Remarkably, the German gun crews were assembled nearby, listening to an officer's orders and leaving the weapons briefly unguarded. Lomell and Sergeant Jack Kuhn used thermite grenades to melt the gears of the guns, rendering them inoperable. Through the efforts of these two men, the primary objective of the entire D-Day mission was accomplished, succeeding where hundreds of bombers and heavy naval guns had failed. (3)1944

Serhii Plokhy explains that Anastas Mikoyan emerged as a voice of reason, having opposed the missiles from the start. As the U.S. blockade began, Khrushchev ordered missile-carrying ships to turn back, though one ship with nuclear warheads was ordered to proceed. Washington remained dangerously unaware of Soviet submarines armed with nuclear torpedoes and the true number of Soviet troops on the island. Kennedy privately admitted he felt he had "no choice" but to act, partly fearing impeachment. Dean Rusk famously noted that the Soviets "blinked" when their ships finally stopped. (5)1920

Christen Horne refers to herself as a nerd, geek and gamer. She's a big fan of reading and loves Star Wars. As an accomplished singer, she received her Masters in Opera Performance. In addition to the entire family being singers and musicians, archery became a big part of their lives as well.  When Karla, Christen's mother, was in high school she became the California State Champion Archer and the family still enjoys the sport today.  Having a mom that worked wasn't that unusual for Christen. Her mom had been a paralegal for years after completing her associates degree.  As the three children were growing up, Karla was  leading worship at the local church.  They spent a lot of time at the church. But my guest says she enjoyed it because they were always singing. Ms. Horne fondly remembers her mom embracing whatever fun activities the kids would be involved in, including  going to water parks and going down the water slides together, playing board games and spending quality time involved with the family. Years ago, Christen was actively involved in her community theatre programs.  She fondly retells the story of  the production of  "Fiddler On The Roof," when her mom and aunt  were  "volun-told' that they  had to play village fathers.  There were no other boys/male actors to play the part.  They still laugh about it today. Christen considered her mother as being firm yet compassionate when it came to disciplining the three kids.  Homework definitely took the priority especially over video games. Homework wasn't done, no one got  to play. Christen says  "mom was always really good about helping us find the balance in things. Making sure we had time to play  and making sure we got our homework done."   It wasn't until Christen started to realize  that she often hid her emotions, that she started to recall other instances from her childhood that were clearly  unhappy. She had suffered from depression at a young age that was left undiagnosed. She felt that her mother was embarrassed when Christen showed her true emotions. Horne shared with me that "through my mental health journey, I've gotten more comfortable being more myself around my mom."  Often feeling "this is my fault," Christen often blamed herself and felt that if her mother rejected her, it would be devastating.  It's scary to be a young child and not understand complicated emotional situation. Working with coaches on a regular basis has helped Christen tremendously. "You pick one hurt, then move on to another," reflects Horne. Through working with her coaches she says her relationship with her mom is so much better and she's very grateful for all the support. Christen is now working on her fantasy book which features her main character 'Alkara' who's named after mother and who also is an archer. Lauretta shares his personal background as a once "directionless" student who found inspiration through a NASA job advertisement. The team's initial proposals suffered demoralizing rejections from NASA, which served as a "gut punch" but ultimately strengthened their resolve. The 100-year search for dark matter began in 1922 with Dutch astronomer Jacobus Kapteyn, who was the first to use the term "dark matter" in a scientific paper. Kapteyn realized that the gravity of unseen matter must govern the motions of stars. His student, Jan Oort, later expanded on this by studying the vertical "up and down" motions of stars in the Milky Way to estimate the mass in the galactic plane. Fritz Zwicky provided a major breakthrough by observing the redshift of galaxies in the Coma cluster, concluding they moved too fast for visible mass to hold them together. Zwicky termed this missing mass "Dunkle Materie." These early pioneers identified a gravitational discrepancy—the "elephant in the universe"—that would define modern cosmology as scientists began hunting for what they could not see. Following Jim Peebles' work on Cold Dark Matter, scientists began searching for the WIMP (Weakly Interacting Massive Particle). These particles are thought to interact through gravity but lack electrical charges or nuclear force interactions, making them invisible. The search has moved from telescopes to particle physics, with researchers at CERN's Large Hadron Collider attempting to create WIMPs through high-energy collisions. Simultaneously, underground laboratories globally search for rare instances where a WIMP might "bump" into an atomic nucleus. Computer simulations like IllustrisTNG are used to model the universe's evolution from the Big Bang. These simulations are highly successful at recreating the current universe only when CDM is included. Despite this success in theory and simulation, the physical particle has yet to be detected in any laboratory, leaving the nature of dark matter an open question. (4/8)1903 LANGELY AERODROME
