Valley View, formerly a golf course, was transformed into a park and opened in September 2021. Couples may invite up to 10 guests to observe their nuptials. Photographs are encouraged. Akron Municipal Court Judge Nicole Walker will officiate. Summit Metro Parks will provide a sapling tree for each couple to plant at home in honor of their marriage. Long's Shoes is Closing After 53 YearsIn a Facebook post on Aug. 6, the business announced "it is with a heavy heart that we must close the doors of Long's Shoes. We have enjoyed serving you these past 53 years. Garfield Community Learning Center Grand OpeningAkron Public Schools will hold a grand opening for the new $57 million Garfield Community Learning Center on Aug. 27. The district will have a ribbon-cutting and offer tours of the new school in an event from 1-3 p.m. at the school, 1326 Brown Street, Akron. Students and staff will be on-site, as well as community partners including Acme Fresh Market, FirstEnergy Corp. and Stark State College. The school is the last in the series of full building replacements completed over the last 15 years, and will hold the combined student bodies from the former Kenmore and Garfield high schools. Speaker Appointed in September 2015, King is the seventh director of Summit Metro Parks, which was established in 1921 and is the first woman to lead the park in its history.
