In this episode of Sew & So, we're stepping into a powerful intersection of storytelling and sewing with filmmaker and artist Valerie Soe. Valerie is a fourth-generation Chinese American, born and raised in San Francisco, and like so many, her sewing journey started with a single machine—a 1970s Kenmore she still uses today. What began as a practical skill in high school, and later as a way to sew for her family, became something she would return to in a moment when it mattered most. As an award-winning filmmaker and professor of Asian American Studies, Valerie has built her career around telling stories that reflect identity, memory, and community—stories she didn't often see growing up. And in early 2020, when the world slowed down and uncertainty set in, she found herself both living and documenting one of those stories in real time. Through a simple call to action, the Auntie Sewing Squad came together—hundreds of volunteers sewing masks for people who needed them, at a time when supplies were scarce and fear was high. Valerie was part of that effort, sewing alongside others while also capturing the experience as a filmmaker. Her newest documentary, The Auntie Sewing Squad Resistance Playbook, revisits that moment—what it felt like, what was created, and what it meant to come together in a time of crisis. Alcatraz prison in California, built on a small, rocky island in the Bay of San Francisco, operated from the time of the US Civil War in the 1860s until it was closed in 1963. The island's remote location made it the perfect site for a prison, but this location also made it expensive to maintain, and the cost of maintenance finally led to its closure. During the years it operated, Alcatraz housed many infamous prisoners including Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly, but the one prisoner whose nickname is synonymous with the prison is The Birdman of Alcatraz. Why am I telling you about Alcatraz and its prisoners? Because this episode is about Robert Stroud, better known as the Birdman of Alcatraz. You may not associate Stroud with Alaska, but he was originally incarcerated for a murder he committed in Juneau. Three years ago, on April 30/May 1, 2023, a strange craft made a hard landing in the Las Vegas backyard of the Kenmore family, spilling bunches of non-human intelligent beings onto their property. Weird creatures terrified the family to the point that they called 9-1-1 for police assistance. While the claims made by the family seemed beyond fantastic, they walked away with video proof that confirmed that their story was true. The cellphone video was deemed authentic by renowned crime scene reconstruction expert Scott Roder in March 2024, and the government was alerted to the proof in a June 2024 email message. A person representing himself as someone with a great interest in the case has, for more than a year now, been submitting various images to the podcast host that he said were discovered within the 1-minute and 41-second-long cellphone footage filmed by the Kenmore family of Las Vegas. The most stunning material submitted by this person showed a very detailed still image of what appears to be a reptilian alien. Thanks to the eagle eye of one of the podcast's subscribers, however, the image was a drawing extracted from an episode of a series called “Lost Tapes,” which ran on cable channel Animal Planet. For Sue, life's work extends beyond the microphone. As a certified Yoga Therapist, she has spent decades helping individuals suffering from cancer and dementia. For her, music and wellness are two sides of the same coin—gifts she shares to heal and inspire. A producer of TikTok videos largely devoted to the investigation of the 2023 Las Vegas alien incident has uncovered new evidence related to the case. Twitter X user MATTRICK@MATTRICKBEATS, who also operates TikTok channel @clearUFO, produced a new video revealing that the leaked FLIR footage showing the NHI craft registered no heat signal as it descended toward the Kenmore family's backyard was captured by an Amazon security robot and apparently leaked to 4chan in June 2023 by an employee.
