I'll be the first to admit that I am often the limiting factor in us actually doing nature study. It is one of the first subjects I cut when we get busy. And if it's cold, hot, windy, buggy... Well, you get the idea. But I know how valuable nature study is for my children so I made it a priority when they were little. The past couple of years we have not studied nature as consistently because our schedule has gotten busier, and my children's other subjects have consumed more of our day. But after my interview with Cindy West, I am convinced I need to add nature study back into our homeschool. And even though I know it is best for us to get outside to study nature, I am excited that we now have another option to learn about nature via live classes. If you are hesitant to add nature study to your homeschool because you don't know what to study or you don't want to get outside, this episode is packed with helpful suggestions and ideas for the brand new nature study newbie. If you are a nature study veteran, there are tips for you too! What we talked about The benefits of adding nature study to your homeschool. You may be surprised at some of these benefits. I was! How nature study lays a foundation for high school science and the simple and fun activities you can do on a nature walk to help lay that foundation. How to motivate your children on a nature walk. Leah Martin provides an interesting perspective as she shares the process she went through of letting go of other people's expectations of what her children should be learning and how their homeschool should look. Drawing on her years teaching in a public school, then in an Ambleside school, and now teaching her own children at home, she reminds us how the early years requires a very different approach than the school years and what that looks like in her home. She also relates how she has learned the value of building her children's skills and abilities to learn in many different learning styles. Homeschooling our children is an adventure and unfortunately, it does not come with a guidebook. Heather Haupt, a second generation homeschooler, reminds us in this episode of the importance of making plans but holding them loosely. Having a plan allows you to be intentional. Holding that plan loosely allows you to make changes as needed to help your children succeed and learn in their own way and at their own pace. As we strive to help our children assume responsibility for their education, there are six steps we can keep in mind to equip and encourage them on the journey. Start with conversations about why you learn. Set an example and be a lifelong learner. Set clear expectations and ensure your child understands them. Provide training. Provide accountability and quality control. Allow your child to reap the rewards of a job well done. Join me as we discuss these six steps in this episode of the podcast. You'll hear about real situations in our homeschool of how I implement each of these steps, sometimes more successfully than others. Some days I think I have cats instead of children. Have you felt the same as this reader? I have no idea how to keep three children on track when one asks a question or needs 1:1 help. Its like herding cats around here. Then I get frustrated, behind, and then overwhelmed. When I get to the overwhelmed stage I almost throw in the towel because I don't know how to NOT drown. It's difficult to accomplish anything in your homeschool when it feels like you are herding cats and no one is heading in the right direction. Have you noticed homeschooling often feels like being in a refiner's fire? There are days it seems you accomplish nothing because you spend the whole day addressing character issues—yours or your children's. This is frustrating when you already have so much to do and just want to check things off your list. Instead of allowing this to overwhelm and frustrate you, embrace these moments. In this episode, we are discussing four tips for embracing your time in the homeschool refiner's fire and how it is beneficial in the long run. Key takeaways from the show Recognize this is an investment. Build margin into your schedule. Be a helper, not an adversary. Seek input from your husband. Links and resources from the show The story of the refiner's fire: As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities. The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot; then she thought again about the verse that says: ‘He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver.’ (Malachi 3:3) She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed. The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, ‘How do you know when the silver is fully refined?’ He smiled at her and answered, ‘Oh, that’s easy — when I see my image in it.’ (source unknown) Need help identifying your essential homeschool items?
