What if your child doesn't need to be forced to learn to read? For this episode, I'm joined by Leah Martin, who shares:
About Leah Martin-BrownEven before picking up her first guitar at age 11, Leah Martin-Brown knew she was destined to become a musician.Born in Brisbane, Queensland and raised in the beautiful beach town Burleigh Heads, Leah would play anywhere there was a stage- oftentimes begging family friends who owned bars and restaurants to let her set up and play a few tunes. By the time she was 16, Leah was writing, recording and performing her original music all over the Gold Coast and surrounding areas- regularly being booked for locally run festivals, youth events and the occasional nightclub with her newly named project 'Lilly Rouge'.Leah finished high school and was accepted into the 'Bachelor of Popular Music' program at Griffith University which she graduated from in 2011. Still knowing that she desperately wanted to continue writing and performing music but not quite sure how to support herself doing so, Leah moved down to Melbourne in Victoria and began working on a Master of Music Education at Melbourne University. While she did not fall in love with teaching, she found new life within the vibrant Melbourne music scene, inspiring her to immediately change her hair colour to her signature red and, also, to defer her Degree and begin fully focusing on her band- 'Lilly Rouge'.September 2012 saw Leah return to her home state of Queensland to begin writing and recording with Brisbane based Producer, Stuart Stuart (The Veronica's, Sheppard). The two co-wrote over 30 tracks, most of which were released on 'Lilly Rouge" records. This set Leah and her band up for two Australian National tours, support slots for 'Everclear', 'Presidents of the United States' and 'The Getaway Plan' and a set at 2013's 'Big Day Out' Festival. This caught the eyes and ears of Los Angeles, CA based A&R Company- A&R Worldwide. They invited Leah to California to work on some new music with Producer, Brian Howes (Airbourne, Skillet, Hinder, Nickelback) and showcase at music industry event 'Musexpo'. It was at this point that Leah disbanded Lilly Rouge and created 'Evol Walks'.Leah spent the next 5 years extensively playing shows in her new home of Los Angeles, CA as well as touring through Australia, West Coast USA and parts of Europe, releasing 2 EPs and several singles with the band.In 2020, Leah relocated to Stockholm, Sweden where, as well as writing and recording new music, she was given the opportunity to work and record an album with legendary Producer & Songwriter Robert ‘Mutt' Lange and acclaimed songwriter & producer Tony Nilsson. In 2024, Leah Martin-Brown spends the bulk of her time in Los Angeles, CA but is consistently travelling the world writing, recording and playing wherever she can.She has shared the stage with Dreamtheatre, Flogging Molly, Nita Strauss, Glen Sobel, Johnny Depp and Joe Perry and many more.

We truly loved having her as a guest on the show, and her positive energy is impressive. We know that you'll enjoy our interview with this badass and beautiful musician. Leah Martin-Brown's Bio:From humble beginnings, Leah spent her early teenage years practicing her craft by playing in bars and clubs around Brisbane and the Gold Coast under the moniker 'Lilly Rouge'. By 17 she had been accepted into Griffith University's prestigious Bachelor of Popular Music where she was able to fine tune her burgeoning talents. It was during this time that she began to seriously pursue her career as a professional songwriter and musician, working with producer Stuart Stuart (Sheppard) on heavier material for 'Lilly Rouge', which had been a solo, acoustic project up until that point. After completing her degree at the end of 2011 Leah packed her bags and moved to Melbourne to do some musical soul searching. Inspired by the vibrance of the city she was able to pen over thirty new songs enabling her to record three EP's for 'Lilly Rouge' and head out on two National tours which included spots supporting 'Everclear' and 'Presidents of the United States' as well as a set at the once coveted 'Big Day Out' festival. In 2014, after piquing the interest of an American based A&R company, Leah once again packed her bags and made the move to Los Angeles, California where she is still based to this day. It was there she started up her rock and roll band 'Evol Walks' who have now gone on to tour worldwide and score a management deal with Rick Sales (Slayer, Ghost, Mastodon).

Are you loving the preschool years? According to Charlotte Mason, the preschool years were intended to be "a quiet growing time" but for many families, those years have turned into a time of pressure and unrealistic expectations. It's hard to drown out all the voices in today's culture telling you to "do more" and find a way to provide that simple time for your little ones. Today I chat with Sonya Shafer from "Simply Charlotte Mason” on how to make Charlotte Mason’s ideas a reality. Our Preschool Life curriculum provides the gentle guidance that many parents are looking for to help their children flourish in the early years. In this episode you'll hear: a simple, refreshing, and freeing approach to the preschool years how and why Our Preschool Life came about why you need nurturing and encouragement during the preschool years as much as your child does Show Notes Simply Charlotte Mason Website A Charlotte Mason Companion (affiliate link) A Charlotte Mason Education (affiliate link) SCM Curriculum: Build your own SCM Curriculum: Open and Go Preschool & Kindergarten Planning Our Preschool Life Picture Study Portfolios A Case for the Early Years with Leah Martin
Are you in the Early Years Stage? If you have a 0-6-year-old, you are living in what Charlotte Mason referred to as "the early years." In her first volume, Home Education, Miss Mason urged mothers to "secure for them a quiet growing time, a full six years of passive receptive life, the waking part of it spent for the most part out in the fresh air." If you think that's a challenge in our hectic postmodern world, you're right. But it's not impossible. Today I chat with Leah Martin from "My Little Robins" on how to make Charlotte Mason's ideas a reality. We also discuss why the early years should be preserved as a "quiet growing time" instead of relinquishing them to academics as the culture continually calls us to do and some consequences we're seeing as a society because of this unnatural shift. In this episode you'll hear: the story of a former public school teacher turned Ambleside teacher turned CM homeschool mama why academics in the early years is usually not developmentally appropriate why the Great Outdoors is the best classroom for the early years mental, emotional and physical benefits to holding off on academics how the segregation mindset of home and school is disrupting the early years Show Notes My Little Robins Blog Home Education by Charlotte M. Leah Martin provides an interesting perspective as she shares the process she went through of letting go of other people's expectations of what her children should be learning and how their homeschool should look. Drawing on her years teaching in a public school, then in an Ambleside school, and now teaching her own children at home, she reminds us how the early years requires a very different approach than the school years and what that looks like in her home. She also relates how she has learned the value of building her children's skills and abilities to learn in many different learning styles. “Don’t worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you.” “I might as well be talking to a brick wall!” “In one ear and out the other.” Clearly, kids who don’t listen is a thing. We have tons of cultural idioms about not listening, and they’re often used to describe children. Some of this probably comes from a combination of immaturity and the fact that they are still developing habits like attention. But in my own family, I notice it’s something I do that actually teaches my children not to listen.
