In this episode Rosa & Cat take an in-depth look at the career of Raúl Juliá. The man who’s known as Gomez Addams had a long challenging journey before that role. Analyzing three films with his documentary functioning as reference, this episode takes a look at Juliá’s unfortunate short-lived career. KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN (1985) A gay man and a political leader are together in a prison. The gay man narrates the stories of two fake movies of his own life. Juliá portrays Valentin alongside William Hurt's Luis Molina. This film is the first to earn an actor an academy award (Hurt) for depicting an openly gay man in film. This may be the film that catapulted Raúl Juliá into the spotlight. Kiss of the Spider Woman is available in its entirety on YouTube. THE ADDAMS FAMILY (1991) In the film that would immortalize Juliá as Gomez Addams, this beloved film follows the Addams family in their search for their long lost uncle Fester (Lloyd). This family comedy showcases the uniqueness and importance of family. The Addams Family is available for rental on any rental platform. THE BURNING SEASON (1994) is based on the true story of Brazilian rubber tapper, Chico Mendes who leads his people in protest against the government and developers who want to cut down their part of the rainforest for a new road and ranch land. The rich and the powerful will stop at nothing, and frequently resort to murder. This would be the last film that Raúl Juliá would star in. Filming while fighting the disease that would eventually take his life, he was honored posthumously with a Golden Globe and Emmy award for his portrayal as Mendes. The Burning Season is available in its entirety on YouTube. RAÚL JULIÁ: THE WORLD’S A STAGE (2019) is the documentary highlighting the Juliá's extraordinary career from his beginnings in his beloved Puerto Rico to his last films in Hollywood. Narrated by family members, former coworkers, and current noticeable Latinx actors, who were influenced by Juliá’s work, this film is bound to open many viewers to the versatility and well rounded talent Raúl Juliá was. This documentary isn’t discussed in depth, but it’s utilized as a resource by our hosts. Watch on PBS or on Amazon Prime for purchase/rental. Have you ever said, “I Can’t”? Are there new opportunities that you’re saying I can’t too? It could be for things that are going to help you learn and grow mentally, spiritually, emotionally. When you say “I can’t”, what you’re really saying is “I won’t” and it’s usually fear that’s showing up on your doorstep. By saying “I can’t”, you’re letting fear walk right in and take over. Say “I Can!” and “I Will!”. There are amazing things waiting for you when you do. Please Rate, Review & Subscribe! When we’re young you start to do things that you like and don’t like, like chores. When you have to do the same things over and over, you get really good at it and that’s what creates ability and skill. Then you’ll be able to say “yah, I can do that”. If you have to do something hard or new and you start to question your skills and abilities then fear and doubt just take over and then, you start to think you’re not capable anymore. Then you don’t get that experience of what could happen if you just use your abilities and experience new things. Use your skills and abilities and don’t question them. How to manage your priorities is a key factor in whether or not your life turns out the way you hoped it would. It may indeed be influenced by chance, luck, hard work, drive, skills, education, financial capacity, and many other components. However, how you manage your priorities will supersede all of these. Therefore, it is crucial that you recognize your behavior patterns and implement sound strategies to help you reach your goalposts. From an early age, you are taught that you need to make tough decisions. You are reminded that you can’t have everything in life. You are unwittingly conditioned to believe that you must choose between the things you desire. We carry this belief into our adult lives, too. We see this when women lose their self-identity when they become a mother. The new role takes priority, and many women forget to nourish their personal life, too. We see it when we take a job that pays the bills instead of chasing a dream job that fills the soul. And we see it when relationships fail because life was hard; you can’t always win. But, fighter-pilot Kate Lowe is spreading her message that with a little strategic thinking, you absolutely can have it all. “I thought I could do everything because no-one ever told me I couldn’t.” The powerful and thought-provoking words of a fighter-pilot who purposefully and intentionally set out to manage her priorities in a way that allowed her to do and have everything she wanted. Kate has chosen to design her life on her terms, unwilling to compromise or accept limits on her aspirations. From attending a civilian college to earn a Second Leuitenant’s Commission, successfully becoming a fighter pilot in the US Air Force (a male-dominated industry and prolific career choice), building a stable and supportive relationship within an ever-changing landscape, to re-designing her career in an industry she loves so that she could also be the parent she wanted to be, and all while making sure her own cup was filled. Kate is intentional in her actions and utilizes fighter-pilot tactics to manage her priorities in a way that enables her to have a successful career, to set the boundaries in her career, to have a healthy marriage, a happy family life, a bond with her children, and a personal life of deep fulfillment. She’s on this week’s podcast to share those techniques and strategies so that you, too, can focus your enthusiasm with the direction and intention required to create a life that you love rather than live the life you are dealt. Exercise is so important, especially as you get older and if you spend a lot of time sitting at a desk working on your computer. Exercise doesn't have to be something that takes up a lot of time or is sweat-producing. You can just do something simple like go walking. Don't put it off until you start feeling aches and pains. I had an accountability partner to go walking with for 10 years and if that's what you need, then find one who's interested and is willing to help you along and exercise with you. It’s so important to stick to what you stand for and have integrity with yourself. I have two things that are at the top of my list of the things that is a hard rule that I won’t break. The first one is - not swearing! I didn’t grow up in a house where anyone swore, and my mom modeled for me that it’s not necessary to swear. The 2nd thing that I stand for is not being nasty to people or talking to people in a nasty way. I was taught to treat people the way I want to be treated, and that’s how I live my life. I don’t know about you, but I love to spend time in my garden. Maintaining my flower beds and creating a haven to relax in used to be an easy job. Now that I’m in my 50s, it takes a lot more effort, and if I’m not careful, it causes a lot of tension and pain in my back. Knowing how to prevent back pain or even gain some back pain relief has been a game-changer for me. I bet it would be for you, too. No matter how hard we try, there is just no getting away from the bending, twisting, and lifting that we do every day. However, knowing the right way to move your body can make a massive difference to your comfort, ability to move, and physical health. As we get older, it’s not uncommon for us to spend a lot more time sitting down. But don’t you know that sitting is the new smoking? To prevent back pain in the first place, your body needs to be active. It requires a strategy in place that supports your bone and muscle health. On the flip side, many of us are becoming primary caregivers to our elderly parents. So, we are more active but in ways that we are not used to. Your back needs to be primed for your change in age, needs, and lifestyle. So listen in to today’s episode to find out my top strategies that you can put in place right now to support strong bones, strong muscles, and a healthy back that lets you live a full and active midlife! Comparison is a common problem that we do, and when I say we do it, it’s because I have done it in my life and every now and then I catch myself doing it. Think about the example of comparing apples to oranges, the only thing they have in common is that they’re fruit. So, if you compare yourself to someone, the only thing you have in common is that you’re a human being or you both are women. It’s impossible to compare yourself to someone else because there are no two people alike, not even identical twins. You have your own unique gifts, talents, and skills. God created you to be you! There’s no one else out there that can be just like you. It’s almost ridiculous that we compare ourselves to someone else. Going on social media can take you on a downward spiral when you look at other people and see only the perfect pictures and videos, but you have no idea what’s going on behind the scenes and the messiness. Make a decision today that you’re going to focus on your gifts and talents and how special you are. Focus on what makes you happy and what you can create that gets you excited to wake up to every morning and do or work on. Your life will never look the same. Consider what is possible for you. Have you ever thought about what’s possible for you? Have you stop dreaming, stopped wondering, stopped imagining? You are creative! Lean into what’s possible for you at this moment. Get out your notebook and use your imagination of what’s possible and write it all out. Remember when you were a kid and you used to use your imagination? And if you don’t remember go and watch little kids and watch them play, they use their imagination all the time. Your life will be amazing when you lean into your possibilities. You have worth and value. Everything that you do in your life and your business matters. Have you ever found yourself bored at work? Has your dream job become your living nightmare? Maybe your work pays the bills,, and your true passion is a hobby, side hustle, or pipe-dream. Through developing my business, my path has unraveled and evolved. I’ve met and built relationships with other women,, business owners, entrepreneurs, and trailblazers. Along the way, I have been fortunate enough to meet other women with similar passions. Two of those women are Amy and Nancy Harrington, two sisters and best friends from Chicago. Amy and Nancy had what you could only describe as dream careers. Forging professional careers in male-dominated industries, making great money, and following what they thought was their dream jobs. Fortunately for them, life threw some curveballs that allowed them to redefine their idea of success. Leaving behind lucrative positions in the TV industry and advertising world, the sisters joined forces to find their true passion. Little did they know that in doing so, they would find not only their own passion, but they would light a spark that would go on to blaze a bonfire of success, empowerment, and community building. Inspired by the Me Too Movement's support and solidarity, the Passionistas Project has gone on to share the stories of women-owned businesses all over the world in a bid to inspire women to follow their dreams and pursue their passions, and find the fire in their belly. Listen to this episode to hear all the details of the journey, some name-drops of the celebrities they’ve encountered along the way, and the life-altering benefits of following your passion. Aloha friends! I want to share with you the 5 simple steps to beginning your creative business because if you don’t know how then what tends to happen is you start having thoughts swirling around in your mind that can scare you and I want to help you get started without the scary! Halloween is over ladies, let’s get started. Step 1 - Partner with God - because He can guide you and make your business better than you can ever imagine. Step 2 - Decide what you want to do for your business and who you’re going to serve- what’s your gift that you’ve been given and that you want to share with people. Step 3 - How much time - part-time or full time, how many hours you have and want to use for your business so that you know what to focus on in the amount of time you have. Step 4 - Decide what you want to name your business and register your business name with the state you live in. If you’re having a hard time deciding on a name, just use your first and last name for now. Step 5 - Create your first piece of content and share it with as many people as you can, and if you have a product take pictures of it and share the pictures with as many people as you can too, for example, your family(if they’re supportive), friends, co-workers or former co-workers, on social media if you have social media accounts. Aloha sisters! I want to share with you what it means to have a CREATIVE business. IT’S WHATEVER YOU WANT IT TO BE! I’m not trying to be funny, but you can create and have whatever kind of business you want and that’s the beauty of a creative business. I can almost guarantee that you love to create beauty and there’s something so magical about that and sometimes it’s hard to explain because it’s just what you do. These are a short list of what it means: it’s where you put your heart and soul you use your God-given creative gifts and put something that you create out into the world It’s something that you care about deeply and it comes from your heart and you create something that’s special to you It expresses a part or all of who you are and your core values It’s fulfilling where you wake up everyday feeling excited about your life and what you’re creating you bring to life what exists in the spiritual and bring it into the physical world where you are serving other people for free and in exchange for money you can decide how many hours you want to work you decide who you’re going to serve what it’s going to look like how much time you want to spend in and on your business. Are you ready for a business coach? If yes, send me an email at aloha@janinjohnston.com and let’s get started! Aloha sisters, I wanted to do a wrap up about what I've been talking about in episodes #71 to #74 which is mindset. And it's been an interesting journey learning about mindset. And I hope you found great value in what I'm talking about and the things that I'm sharing. Mindset is so important and it has to be talked about a lot more than it already is. In episode #71, I talked about what is mindset and I tried to describe it in a different way. Not in a scientific or technical, but I tried to just describe it as like if I were having a conversation with you if you're sitting right here with me. In episode #72, I titled it this specific title on purpose and the tile is “if you set your mind to it!”, like WHAT! You have to understand what that means and you have to have somebody help you to understand what that means as well. In episode #73, I talked about getting an upgrade, you know, do you want an upgrade to your mindset? I know I do. And I shared about how you have to come from a place of love, and you have to be able to love and accept yourself. In order to upgrade your mindset, In episode #74, I talked about what mindset are you gonna choose and that’s the question is “what mindset are you going to choose?” Whatever that mindset is, I hope you choose to be open to possibilities. You have free will to choose, also known as agency. You do have a choice on what kind of mindset you want to have. Mindset is like a bucket full of all different things like your beliefs and how you view yourself. Your Mindset is not fixed. In my 30 years of working with women, the only thing that makes it seem like they have a fixed mindset is because fear shows up and gets in the way of them being open to possibilities. Write down what kind of mindset you want. Do you have a mindset that’s not serving you very well? Do you want to upgrade? With mindset, you have to choose what you want, so think about it and decide today. I’m here to help you use your God-given creative gifts that are waiting to be set free, and to have purposeful fulfillment! I want to ask you ‘do you want an upgrade? An upgrade to your mindset’?! In the last two episodes #71 & #72, I've been talking about mindset, because I find it fascinating what it's about. If you haven't had a chance to listen to those two episodes, please go back and listen to them after this. It's really interesting to learn about mindset because how you think will always create your reality and I've had a certain set of thought patterns of how I think of things in a certain way over and over. All we do and say and how we live is all what we've learned from when we were a child growing up and all the different influences. And now as an adult, you decide how you want to live. But how you grew up will always come into play, unless you make a conscious decision and that you become aware of what you're thinking and what you want. Because of all those reasons I want to talk about upgrading your mindset. The first thing I want to talk about in order to upgrade is that you have to come from a place of love. I'm talking about the kind of love where you give yourself credit, you give yourself some grace, and you accept who you are. Your mind is not set. So just remember that the only thing that is going to get in your way of having an upgrade to your mindset or growing as a human being is just the fear and the doubt, but it's mostly fear. Take the time to upgrade your mindset and start doing that with love, even just thinking about love can help you feel better because the way you think, will determine how you feel as well. So, do this for yourself today. Join me in my ‘Called To Create Podcast’ Community on Facebook, go to: http://bit.ly/calledtocreatepodcast Please Rate, Review & Subscribe! Yesterday on episode #71, I talked about mindset like what in the world is mindset. I think it's kind of like, a topic that needs many discussions or many opportunities to learn about it. So I want to talk more about it today. I titled this episode: If you set your mind to it. WHAT! Because have you ever heard anybody say that to you “if you just set your mind to it.”?! Okay, what does that mean? Have you ever thought like that like, okay, I don't know how to do that? Can you just show me, or like explain. But what I think it all comes back to is, your mindset is a whole bucket of things. It's what you believe in, the thoughts that you have and how you were raised, and more. So you start to believe things about yourself and just because you believe something doesn't make it true, question what you believe, and about your mindset and what you're thinking. If you have a positive mindset that you can learn new things and do things, even though it's hard, that'll help you to be able to learn and grow and change your mindset to being more positive and getting on that road to accomplishing things. I’ve been hearing a lot of people talk a lot about mindset and even though I was introduced to the term mindset, I still had a hard time understanding what that really means. And for that reason, I want to talk about mindset all week, so that you and I can have a better understanding of what mindset is and why it matters in our lives. There are many different definitions from various sources that I share in this video. To me, it sounds like mind-set is only one way of thinking and that there’s no other way. My understanding of mindset is a set of ideas, beliefs, and things about how you think and how you want to live your life. Come on this mindset journey with me this week. While Dan is away, the girls will play! This month we are joined by previous podcast guest, Kate Holland (check her out on our Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade ep!). A little while back, Kate suggested watching Cobra Kai as perfect pandemic viewing. KYD's second episode had been a re-watch of the first Karate Kid, so it only made sense to invite Kate to watch and discuss The Karate Kid Part II before we join her in Cobra Kai's dojo! Mr. Miyagi's (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita) father has fallen gravely ill, so Miyagi must travel back to Japan to see him one last time. He is joined by his faithful karate student, Daniel (Ralph Macchio), who looks forward to learning more about his sensei's past history. When they land in Okinawa, a decades old grudge between Miyagi and former friend, Sato (Danny Kamekona) comes back to plague our heroes. Miyagi must settle the score with Sato once and for all, while Daniel must fight off an enemy of his own: Sato's nephew, Chozen (Yuji Okumoto)! But Daniel soon realizes this is no longer a tournament match...this fight is to the DEATH! Dan and Chrysten weren't such big fans of the first film...will this second installment help to redeem the franchise's honor? Or will Kate just wind up watching Cobra Kai with no one to talk to about it? Join us and find out! And don't forget to RATE, REVIEW & SUBSCRIBE! In this episode, I talk about creativity because people seem to have their own definition of what creativity is or to create. Creativity is everywhere, everything that you see in the world is a creation. The word create means to bring into existence. So when you're creating something, you're bringing something into existence that wasn't here physically, in front of you, and here on earth. One of the synonyms for creativity is using your imagination. It's also important to use your imagination as part of the creation process. Get a notebook and every morning, write down what's going on in your head, what you're thinking, and all of your creative ideas.
