You have to make sure that your spending plan and your savings plan match your personal beliefs and values. –Shay Budgets On this episode of the PlanSimple Podcast, I'm really excited to talk with Shay about a topic that isn't sexy and hasn't always been interesting to me, but that I think is really important—budgeting. Talking about money is a little taboo, but so important. We talk about how most of us don't learn about money or budgeting. And because most people are so uncomfortable talking about it, we don't learn about money or budgeting. That really needs to change. Getting comfortable with our money stories and knowing where our money is going is so important to feeling in flow. Shay's going to teach us to create a budget at Camp—and you might be thinking, that's not what I want to do in the middle of the summer, but doing this work together can be truly nurturing, an act of self-care. We talk about: How making and sticking to a budget is a lot more than math Flip-flopping the idea of buying on credit and paying off with saving up to buy with cash Patience and gratitude in money work Focusing on permission rather than restriction Overcompensating and other reasons for spending Connecting our thoughts and intentions with our actions and values BIO Shay McMillan is a wife, full-time employee, business owner, social media influencer, planner, goal setting expert, organizer, budget coach and more. She is determined to create and lead a life that she absolutely loves and enjoys. She currently works in a helping profession and thoroughly enjoys her work. However, she feel she has a duty to do more – to help more. That's where her social media influencer career comes in. She created a budget-centered YouTube channel in 2017 and then created other social media accounts too. While her financial freedom journey is going relatively well, she also includes everyday, real-life struggles and successes, that impact her financial situation. Shay's current obsessions include her husband, budgeting, planning, organizing and decorating/furnishing her new house and her new pup. You can expect to see a ton of each on all of her social media profiles. LINKS Shay Budgets on YouTube @shaybudges on Instagram Shay's Facebook page https://www.shaybudgets.com/ Doable Changes from this episode: PRACTICE GRATITUDE. Recognizing and appreciating what you have is a piece of the “money work.” Make a list of things you have that you are grateful for. PRACTICE PATIENCE & SAVING. Choose one thing that you want but do not need right now. Practice putting aside money each month for that thing. You could even calculate how much more you would spend if you bought it on credit now and paid the same amount you would save to pay it off. CONNECT TO YOUR VALUES. Connecting to values can help you figure out where you want to spend money — and where you don't. Just because other people spend money on date night out, expensive gifts, the latest phone, or daily coffee, doesn't mean you have to. And it doesn't mean that you shouldn't spend money on those things if they are things you truly love and want in your life. Start by making a list of values. Then when you are going to make a purchase, ask, Does this align with my values? Shay will be one of the “camp counselor” at Camp FLOW July 12–16. Shay will teach us how to make a personal budget. We'll also have cooking classes and meal planning; yoga, mediation, and breathwork; a day focused on motherhood; and lots of play including oracle cards, art projects, and a dance party … and SO much more. You can do it from your backyard—and it's free! Come create a healthier happier you! https://plansimple.com/camp

This is not the house I would have chosen to be my forever home, but over the years I have come to terms with us staying here - but how to reconcile with the dissatisfaction of this home not being exactly what I want. Acknowledging our home dissatisfaction Recognizing that deep desire to create a space that FEELS like home Addressing the longing we have to change our homes How we handle our dissatisfaction Working with a partner to build a home together Having different ideas on what a home should be Looking for the ways we both want to create a great place Owning where we think the grass is greener Are we entitled when it comes to having an upgraded/ideal home? Addressing the concept of what is 'normal' for how our homes should look Getting overwhelmed to just 'get there already' Asking about what we want, why we want it Can we consider the costs of having this 'ideal' home Appreciating the home you have The one question that helped me see the resent I was looking at my home with Looking at my space with appreciation over the days/weeks/months and the things that I have put on my list that I didn't expect Old decks, small closets, dated kitchens, lack of storage cul-de-sacs Why do we want to change our home? We think when our home is 'ideal' then we can feel different Seeing how you don't have to wait for the perfect home in order to feel that Getting stuck in the either/or mentality Stop waiting for the perfect home Your home should be a place that reflects YOU and is a space you love to be and nobody else will do this work for you Do the work of removing what you don't want in your home and letting the things you love shine and be used Know what you LOVE and focus on those things more than the latest trends Make a point to USE your space for the way you want your home to be used (gather, create, make, relax) Creating spaces you use and enjoy Loving your home and wishing it were different This is not an either/or situation, hold space for both of these Products recommended here may include referral links to Amazon. And we want to get clear on what we want here, how to be purposeful and intentional in each of the areas of our life. So welcome to the podcast. If we need the Earth, does the Earth need us? This week on the podcast we dive deep into the relationship amongst ourselves and the Earth with guest Tiokasin Ghosthorse. We begin our conversation by talking about the savior mentality that can arise when we act to address the many issues that threaten Earth and kin at this moment. Recognizing the trickiness of interrogating this mentality that is often intertwined with emotions of loss, love, and protection, Tiokasin offers that perhaps rather than being guided by solutions and salvation, we acknowledge where we are at in this consciousness and how we can challenge ourselves to give back to the Earth without intrusion. Tiokasin Ghosthorse is a member of the Cheyenne River Lakota Nation of South Dakota and has a long history with Indigenous activism and advocacy. Tiokasin is the Founder, Host, and Executive Producer of “First Voices Radio'' for the last 28 years. In 2016 he received a Nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. June 8, 2021 A woodpecker's constant hammering on the trunk of a large tree has kept my imagination engaged on hidden fear. Anytime a woodpecker has selected my forest here in south Charlotte, NC, it means a passing of lives. The sound of the rhythmic thunder. I'd say this tree is several feet high and diameter. But in this present place of now I can't pinpoint which trunk has come under attack. I just know the woodpecker is deeply dedicated to reaching whatever bugs it needs to survive. In Native American spirituality the woodpecker represent a growing storm. In all places that you presently stand you can't help but wonder about personal strengths being called to action. This journey through modern day uncertainty. How many woodpeckers are lined up outside your spiritual forest? The woodpecker. A growing storm. Are you aware or deciding to push aside? Are you present enough to recognize the poisons on the inner core of the rings that make up your tree trunk? All that is hidden shall be located by the woodpecker. Recognizing means taking note of all things. Especially new growth. For who you are and how you become always rests in a ray of light.
Are you interested in healthier eating habits? Have you been worried about your relationship with food? In this episode, we dive into the world of binge eating, overeating, and other eating disorders. Today, I talk with Glen Livingston, Ph.D., a veteran psychologist, and was the long-time CEO of a multi-million-dollar consulting firm that has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. He talks about his experiences with eating disorders and weight loss. We also discuss how to reframe eating habits and ignore the voice of cravings. He also shares how he concluded that you cannot love yourself thin. We get actionable tips to help us break our own unhealthy eating cycle. Questions I asked: What is binge eating? Can you tell us about your personal eating journey? How did you break the unhealthy eating urge? Can you tell us about your techniques for beating “the pig”? Why is it important to identify the bad thoughts about food, and name them something negative? Can you tell us how emotions relate to overeating? How can we fix those justifications from our inner pig? What are some things your inner food demon would say to justify eating? Why should we not have an all or nothing mentality? How do we reframe our thinking in a positive manner? Give me your best three tips for quelling cravings? Where can everyone find you? Topics Discussed: You can't love yourself thin. Actions that don't align with goals. Stopping cravings. How to get our brain to focus on other things. Unhealthy eating. Rewiring your brain. Binge eating. Avoiding misinformation about unhealthy eating. Recognizing the bad thoughts. Making negative thoughts into positive thoughts. Quotes from the show: “With all the millions that are spent on the food industry. Is it any wonder that we're all looking for love at the bottom of a bag?” @GlennLivingston @SisterhoodSweat “I would eat anything that wasn't nailed down.” @GlennLivingston @SisterhoodSweat “I came to the conclusion that it wasn't a game of loving yourself thin.” @GlennLivingston @SisterhoodSweat “The part of your brain that controls fight, or flight doesn't know love. Behind every business are actual human beings. Recognizing this is key to running your own business with integrity, caring, and a mission to make a meaningful difference. Today's guest is a marketing wiz who has mastered the concept of building authentic relationships in the business world. Key Takeaways Customers are going to be more loyal to the brands they have deep connections with. This means building the identity of your company based on who you really are and what is most important to you. Your best customers will be the ones who connect with you as a person. The faster you can authentically put yourself out there, the faster you'll find each other. About Jessika Phillips Jessika is a social media strategist known for her outspoken dedication to relationship marketing. Her personal mission is to inspire people to love more, give more, and be more through using authentic relationships every day. Jessika founded NOW Marketing Group in 2010 with only a laptop and a vision. The company is now a Forbes recognized Agency Partner and a certified inbound partner with Hubspot. NOW Marketing Group works with more than 100 clients across the United States and beyond, choosing to serve – not sell. Jessika teaches comprehensive relationship marketing, presents in a weekly videocast “Magnet Marketers”, and hosts one of the largest social media midwest conferences, Social Media Week Lima. Named as one of the top global rising stars in social media to watch, Jessika is one who leads genuinely, passionately, and by example in all she does. Your Unique Approach to Marketing In this episode, Jessika dives into how we can increase our impact and be more creative if we just think about our businesses a little differently. By recognizing the link between marketing, sales, and human behavior, you can increase your influence as well as revenue. At the core of Jessika's message is the idea of being unique in how you connect with your customers. It's not what you do, so much as how you do it. Knowing what makes you different requires understanding who you and what your business is at a core level. Jessika explains how to identify what it is that you truly want to do with your business and who you want to serve. Putting Yourself at the Core of Your Business Ultimately, your business will do best when it's true to who you are. Your brand should be a reflection of you. The sooner you can put your true self out there, the sooner you'll weed out the people who aren't a good fit, and the sooner you'll draw in your ideal clients. By marketing in a way that is true to your identity, you will naturally add value that others don't. Jessika explains how the connections that you build this way will result in happier clients. You'll be happier too since it's always more satisfying working with people who share your values. They may even do your marketing for you by referring you to other similar customers. How does your brand reflect you as a unique individual? How can you get repeat referrals by creating valued relationships with customers? Leave a comment on the episode page! In This Episode: Making relationships the centerpiece of your marketing [5:00] Reframing how we think about marketing [12:12] Using a magnet approach to marketing rather than a bullhorn [16:24] The biggest lies in business [23:16] How your customers and mindset define your niche [28:14] Getting repeat referrals through relationship marketing [33:30] Quotes “My MO is just all related to relationship marketing and just being better humans and not having this separation of business and personal in how we show up.” [5:31] “The people who are going to stay loyal to us are the ones who have something more than just a surface-level commitment to that brand.” [9:23] “You went into business for a reason; value that. Value yourself and value your work. Make sure there's mutual respect with whomever you're working with.” [26:45] Links: Join the LIVE Videography Interview Series Get on the Onward Summit waitlist Core Storyblocks Find Jessika Phillips Online Follow Jessika on Linkedin | Twitter | Facebook | Instagram | YouTube NOW Marketing Group Learn Relationship Marketing Relationships and ROI Masterclass The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie Books by Seth Godin Additional Links: Check out the full show notes page Do you have something to share on this podcast? On Today's Talk with Erika… It is officially National Cancer Survivor Month, also known as JUNE, and today's guest is very special. Bonnie Addario, is Co-Founder, Board Chair and patient advocate of the GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer. Bonnie was at the top of her game in 2004, leading one of the largest privately held oil companies in the United States, when she received the gut-wrenching diagnosis of stage 3B lung cancer. Bonnie happened to be the first woman to be elected to the California Independent Oil Marketers Association. So, as a woman seemingly in control of so many aspects of her life, she now had to take cancer by the horns. She has now empowered thousands of patients and given them a voice. Recognizing the need for education, empowerment, advocacy, and research to help patients and families, Bonnie and her family founded the “Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation” (ALCF) in 2006. In 2019, ALCF and the Lung Cancer Alliance merged, forming GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer. In 2020, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from CURE Magazine. Sermon Recording Sermon OutlineSpeaker: Rev. Scott StrickmanSermon Series: The Joseph StoriesGenesis 45:16-46:7 (ESV) 16 When the report was heard in Pharaoh's house, “Joseph's brothers have come,” it pleased Pharaoh and his servants. 17 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Say to your brothers, ‘Do this: load your beasts and go back to the land of Canaan, 18 and take your father and your households, and come to me, and I will give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you shall eat the fat of the land.' 19 And you, Joseph, are commanded to say, ‘Do this: take wagons from the land of Egypt for your little ones and for your wives, and bring your father, and come. 20 Have no concern for your goods, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours.'” 21 The sons of Israel did so: and Joseph gave them wagons, according to the command of Pharaoh, and gave them provisions for the journey. 22 To each and all of them he gave a change of clothes, but to Benjamin he gave three hundred shekels of silver and five changes of clothes. 23 To his father he sent as follows: ten donkeys loaded with the good things of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain, bread, and provision for his father on the journey. 24 Then he sent his brothers away, and as they departed, he said to them, “Do not quarrel on the way.” 25 So they went up out of Egypt and came to the land of Canaan to their father Jacob. 26 And they told him, “Joseph is still alive, and he is ruler over all the land of Egypt.” And his heart became numb, for he did not believe them. 27 But when they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said to them, and when he saw the wagons that Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of their father Jacob revived. 28 And Israel said, “It is enough; Joseph my son is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.” 46:1 So Israel took his journey with all that he had and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. 2 And God spoke to Israel in visions of the night and said, “Jacob, Jacob.” And he said, “Here I am.” 3 Then he said, “I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation. 4 I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up again, and Joseph's hand shall close your eyes.” 5 Then Jacob set out from Beersheba. The sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons that Pharaoh had sent to carry him.6 They also took their livestock and their goods, which they had gained in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob and all his offspring with him,7 his sons, and his sons' sons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters. All his offspring he brought with him into Egypt.Sermon OutlineRecognizing how God restores what has been lost (vv25-26) links us to deeper themes in Genesis (and Scripture) that sustains us.1. Death and life45:26-27 “And his heart became numb, for he did not believe them. But when they told him… when he saw… the spirit of their father Jacob revived.”2. Promise and place45:28 And Israel said, “…I will go and see him before I die.” 46:2-4 And God spoke to Israel in visions of the night… “I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt… I will also bring you up again”3. Providence and redemption46:3 Then he said, “I am… the God of your father….for there I will make you into a great nation.”46:4“I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up again, and Joseph's hand shall close your eyes.”Prayer of ConfessionOur gracious redeemer, you are the giver and sustainer of life. We admit to being a confused people. We are a fearful people. We are a hurting people. We have not been steadfast in faithfulness. We are slow to listen and believe. We easily give in to despair. We have acted dishonorably. Forgive us. Help us. We confess our need, and ask for mercy. Restore to us the joy of our salvation. Create in us clean hearts, and renew a right spirit in us. Cast us not away; instead, draw us back. Remain with us, even as we re-commit to remaining with you. Amen.Questions for ReflectionHave you ever found something you had lost, or had something returned to you? What was that experience like? What is it like to lose something? Straight Up Impact who have created a groundbreaking short-film series, Meaning in Madness, which explores the systemic issues contributing to record-high levels of anxiety and depression among teens and young adults. In the first of a four-part documentary series, the filmmakers shine a light on the shortcomings of the industrialized educational system, highlighting the story of Mackenzie, a 17-year-old high school student who feels like she has been reduced to a number and a test score. While Mackenzie's story is personal, it is by no means unique. Around the country, students are struggling to find their purpose in a system bent on conformity—and the problem has only gotten worse since COVID-19. For nearly a year, millions of children have been locked out their classrooms, without access to high-quality education. Meanwhile, parents have tried to step in and fill a void that, until now, has put the onus of education squarely on schools. Until 125 years ago, learning took place in the world, not solely in the classroom. That changed with the industrial revolution. With or without a global pandemic, the currency of the modern world is innovative, creative thinking—not rote memorization—and most public-school systems simply aren't equipped to provide this type of human-centered learning. We need to drastically rethink our societal approach to education. Governor Newsom says, in response to the latest mass shooting in San Jose, “What the hell is wrong with us?” Shayna reframes the question as, “What is wrong with white men?” pointing to the fact that most mass shooters are male. Recognizing that mass shooters do not arise in a vacuum, the question then does return to us. Our show pushes back against the unexamined, often unconscious ways that we frame public questions using political or economic modes of thinking. We aim to be part of a growing movement of people who are critical of the narrowness of political and economic categories, and who want to revive a vision of human flourishing that is grounded in the wisdoms of theological and moral philosophical tradition. We see these habits and ways of thinking as being pre-political, and foundational to a healthy and civil shared life in families, communities, economies, and polities. In short, we want to foster conversations, develop habits, and create communities that are grounded in curiosity, going deep, and shining light. Little children can't wait to grow up. When they have a birthday, they are filled with joy that they are one year older. And yet, as little children, they are still dependent upon their parents in many ways. The same is true of us in a spiritual sense. We often want to “grow up” and to become great saints, attaining great things for God. And yet, we must often remind ourselves that we are still children. In our “littleness” before God, we are now and ever will be fully dependent upon Him for all our needs. Recognizing this fact is essential to becoming a great saint and growing in holiness. We become great by becoming small (See Diary #779).Reflect upon your littleness before God. Compared to the glory and power of the Almighty, we are small and weak. But God sees our littleness and He desires that we run to Him in complete confidence. Entrust yourself to His Mercy and run to Him. Realize that it is only by humbly admitting your total dependence upon Him that you are made strong through His embrace. Lord, I do run to You and cling to You in my need. You are All-Powerful and glorious beyond measure. May I rely upon You in all things and continually seek You with my whole being. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: www.divinemercy.lifeCopyright © 2021 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

Important Events June 1, 1850 Today is the birthday of the gardener and author Richard Irwin Lynch. Richard learned to garden from his father, who was classically trained at Kew. By the time he was seventeen, Richard had followed in his father's footsteps and worked at Kew - starting with herbaceous perennials before moving into tropicals. Enthusiastic and driven, Richard became the curator of the Cambridge University Botanic Garden when he was 30. During his four decades in the position, Richard transformed and elevated the garden by expanding and diversifying the garden's collections through swaps and hybridizing. In 1904, Irwin published his masterpiece The Book of the Iris - a book dedicated to the culture and identification of irises. The iris is the birth flower for the month of February and the state flower of Tennessee. The iris has been a symbol of royalty and power, and the “Fleur de Lis” represents the iris. And here's a heads up to gardeners: if you're growing them without success, remember that Irises need full sun to bloom their best, and if they don't get enough sun, they won't bloom. The Iris fragrance is found in the roots, and it is used for perfume. Historically, Iris root extract has been applied to the face to remove freckles. June 1, 1837 On this day, the American writer and gardener Edith Wharton had a heart attack while staying at the country estate of her friend and co-author of The Decoration of Houses, the architect Ogden Codman. This event was the first of three heart attacks for Edith. She died on August 11th of that year and was buried at Versailles. Edith wrote many popular admonitions. My favorite is this one. She wrote, “There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.” She also wrote: “Beware of monotony; it's the mother of all the deadly sins.” And she also wrote: “If only we'd stop trying to be happy, we could have a pretty good time.” Edith's childhood in Europe afforded her a chance to see the great gardens of Italy and France. As an adult, she became a fan of the famous garden designer Gertrude Jekyll. In 1904, in a departure from her standard storytelling, Edith published a major gardening book, Italian Villas and Their Gardens, with pictures by Maxfield Parrish. Edith thought gardens should be a series of outdoor rooms, and she wrote, “…In the blending of different elements, the subtle transition from the fixed and formal lines of art to the shifting and irregular lines of nature, and lastly, in the essential convenience and livableness of the garden, lies the fundamental secret of the old garden-magic…” Recognizing the grandness of Italian Villa's, Edith wrote, "The Italian garden does not exist for its flowers; its flowers exist for it." Edith had her own wonderful estate for a period of time. It was called the Mount. It was built in 1920, and Edith used it as her summer country estate. Tucked in Lennox, Massachusetts, the Mount. Edith was built on a high ledge and from the terrace. Edith could look down over her property and see her flower gardens, which she herself designed. There's a large French flower garden, a sunken Italian or Walled Garden, a Lime Walk with 48 Linden trees, and grass steps. During her time at The Mount, Edith wrote The House of Mirth. In the story, Edith wrote about having fresh flowers, and Her character, which is about to face financial ruin, says to her mother, “I really think,... we might afford a few fresh flowers for luncheon. Just some jonquils or lilies-of-the-valley----" In terms of her talent, Edith felt she was much better in the garden than she was as a writer. Speaking of garden design, Edith's niece was the garden designer Beatrix Jones Farrand. Edith once wrote a friend, “I'm a better Landscape gardener than a novelist, and this place (The Mount), every line of which is my own work, far surpasses The House of Mirth.” Sadly, Edith's time at The Mount was short-lived as her marriage ended nine years later, and she was forced to sell the place. In her story called The Line of Least Resistance, Edith wrote from the perspective of a husband who had financed elaborate gardens: “The lawn looked as expensive as a velvet carpet woven in one piece; the flower borders contained only exotics… A marble nymph smiled at him from the terrace, but he knew how much nymphs cost and was not sure that they were worth the price. Beyond the shrubberies, he caught a glimpse of domed glass. His greenhouses were the finest in Newport, but since he neither ate fruit nor wore orchids, they yielded, at best, an indirect satisfaction.” In 1920, toward the end of her career, Edith wrote her Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece: The Age of Innocence - becoming the first female to win the award in her category. In 1993, Edith's book was the basis for the movie with the same title, The Age of Innocence, featuring a young Michelle Pfeiffer and Daniel Day-Lewis. In the book, Edith described a neglected garden, “The patch of lawn before it had relapsed into a hayfield; but to the left an overgrown box-garden full of dahlias and rusty rose-bushes encircled a ghostly summer-house of trellis-work that had once been white, surmounted by a wooden Cupid who had lost his bow and arrow but continued to take ineffectual aim.” In terms of her personal preferences, Edith loved reliable bloomers like lilies, hydrangeas, delphinium, cleome, and dahlias. Regarding peonies, she once described them as having “jolly round-faced' blooms. Unearthed Words The last rain had come at the beginning of April, and now, at the first of June, all but the hardiest mosquitoes had left their papery skins in the grass. It was already seven o'clock in the morning, long past time to close windows and doors, trap what was left of the night air slightly cooler only by virtue of the dark. The dust on the gravel had just enough energy to drift a short distance and then collapse on the flower beds. The sun had a white cast, as if shade and shadow, any flicker of nuance, had been burned out by its own fierce center. There would be no late afternoon gold, no pale early morning yellow, no flaming orange at sunset. If the plants had vocal cords, they would sing their holy dirges like slaves. ― Jane Hamilton, American novelist, the author of The Book of Ruth, and winner of the PEN/Hemingway Award for first fiction, A Map of the World(a New York Times Notable Book of the Year in 1999) Grow That Garden Library Practical Houseplant Book by Zia Allaway and Fran Bailey This book came out in 2018, and the subtitle is Choose Well, Display Creatively, Nurture & Maintain, 175 Plant Profiles. Her friends called her Col. Colleen was exceptionally bright. Born and raised in Australia, she worked at Yale as a neurophysiologist for $10,000 a year. During her spare time, she wrote her first breakthrough novel, Tim - a story about a middle-aged widow who has a relationship with her young, handsome, and developmentally disabled gardener. Tim became a movie starring Mel Gibson. But it was her next novel that would end up changing Colleen's life: The Thornbirds - the Australian love story between a Catholic priest and a young woman named Meggie Cleary. In The Thornbirds, Colleen wrote, “There's a story... a legend, about a bird that sings just once in its life. From the moment it leaves its nest, it searches for a thorn tree... and never rests until it's found one. And then it sings... more sweetly than any other creature on the face of the earth. And singing, it impales itself on the longest, sharpest thorn. But, as it dies, it rises above its own agony, to outsing the lark and the nightingale. The thorn bird pays its life for just one song, but the whole world stills to listen, and God in his heaven smiles.” The Thorn Birds sold 30 million copies, became a blockbusting TV miniseries, and allowed Colleen the chance to follow her heart and desire for privacy. By 1979, Colleen moved to a ten-hectare property on Norfolk Island - a small island outpost of Australia between New Zealand and New Caledonia - and a place that she would call home for the rest of her life. A daughter of Australia, Colleen's home country, loved her back and declared her a national treasure in 1997. Colleen died in 2015, but today her garden and home, complete with a fern room, is now open for tours. The gardener and garden broadcast personality, Graham Ross, wrote about meeting Colleen and shared his comments on Facebook, “When we first met Colleen McCullough in her garden, ‘Out Yenna' (‘Out Yonder in Norf'k) on Norfolk Island a decade or more ago, it was like meeting an old friend. It's a long drive through the Kentia palm plantation... to find the beautiful two-story weatherboard home. There was no greeting party of minders, no official anything, just a hearty “G'day,” then “would you like a cup of tea”' followed by “let's look at the garden such as it is”... The garden was entirely the domain and responsibility of her Persian cat, Shady, who would roll in Sweet Alice (Alyssum), gather seeds in her long fur, and then roll around elsewhere in the dirt distributing the seeds. It was the largest planting of Sweet Alice we'd ever seen. In the center of the garden was a magnificent glass screen by a woman artist... who also had a copy of the work, according to Colleen, “hanging in Canberra's Parliament House.” But it was her finale, her coup de grace, that remains with us after the long chat and yarning. We had recently published our first major text, “Our World of Gardening,” with Simon and Schuster and took a copy for her as a sign of appreciation for her time. What happened next remains with us as the true essence of Colleen McCullough. She was enormously grateful for our book. At first, we thought ‘overly so' but left the room after telling us of her gratitude. Ten minutes later, she returned with a copy of every book she'd ever written from ‘Tim' to the ‘Roman Series.' She then proceeded to autograph and included a personal message of every publication. It was a hugely generous gesture and followed with the amazing statement, “You are the first authors to ever offer me a copy of their book.” A few photographs for the record were taken, and strong handshake and we left with over a dozen books under our arms and a fond memory that remains fresh today.” Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

Something we all struggle with is finding the right balance between thriving professionally and thriving personally. It’s easy to focus on the professional side of things—your job, business, finances—and lose sight of your personal priorities. The problem is your professional priorities are easy to pick up once you drop them, but if you’re not careful, your personal priorities can be damaged forever. How do we manage to be purposeful in both areas of life?Craig Kessler is the COO of Topgolf, a husband, and father of three boys. He wants to continue thriving professionally, but he’s identified that what matters most to him is the personal side of life. Navigating the professional world, in any industry, means overcoming obstacles. On today’s episode of the Int-HER-rupt Podcast, marketing maven Amanda Rose shares her strategy to recognize barriers and biases to overcome them. What are the barriers Amanda has faced? A common barrier women encounter is overcoming likability: Balancing being assertive and pleasant without coming across as “abrasive.” Being aware of the situation helps you realize that passion (which someone may interpret as overly assertive) is crucial for professional growth. However, frequent communication can help minimize negative interpretations. How has bias hurt Amanda in her career path? Externally, men in positions of power might think women are capable of only specific tasks versus what they actually should be doing. More important, however, are the issues of internal bias she’s come across - confirmation bias. Amanda’s tips for overcoming confirmation bias: When we get caught up in confirmation biases, we look to confirm an existing belief. The first step is to recognize the issue as soon as it's happening. Take a step back, drop your ego, and ask yourself: Am I making an assumption about this? The second step is to reflect on your thinking. Is it a generalization, or are there issues with your logic? Try to recognize what that bias is rooted in and how the current situation is different. The final step is to challenge yourself to rethink that bias. Rethink the conversation or processes from the situation to determine how you can help this person and prevent yourself from sabotaging your thoughts. Recognizing barriers is fundamental to your professional journey. They're very similar to biases regarding recognizing when they occur and acknowledging that the barrier is not the end to your journey. Sometimes it's keeping yourself busy until you're able to move past it. Right now, we see a massive moment in history where many people are not treated the way they should be. It’s necessary to recognize those barriers and join together to be an ally and advocate. Have you ever been interrupted, and how have you overcome those interruptions? Yes, and Amanda admits she’s probably guilty of it herself. There are situations where you pull a Madam Vice President moment by saying, “excuse me, I'm speaking.” But there are also times you need to listen at that moment. Sometimes it's recognizing, okay, I should be listening to this person and letting them talk more. If you want to get in contact with Amanda, connect with her on LinkedIn. Some people can hold themselves accountable, but some can’t. Why can we not pay as much attention to losing weight as we do in other important areas in our life? How can we go further and faster without just not ourselves doing that? Renee Jones spent 40 years on that Diet Yo-Yo, and in 2012, she finally smashed it by overcoming emotional eating and has maintained her healthy weight since then. Her mission is to help others who struggle with their weight, who look to food for stress relief and to soothe themselves. No diet, exercise routine, or magic diet potion can counter the effects when we’ve stuffed down our feelings and followed it with a food chaser. We have to heal our hearts. When we face our stuff, we no longer need to stuff our faces. With a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Counseling and a Clinical Residency, she utilizes traditional and contemporary models as well as relaxation and horse-assisted methods to help her clients free themselves by addressing emotional, physical, and spiritual needs. In 2011, she opened an international private practice in counseling, serving clients and colleagues in the U. S., United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, India, Vietnam, South Africa, Romania, Australia, and New Zealand. In this episode, Renee shares how she had all this emotional baggage she carried with her, having this belief, and this feeling of not being acceptable, being too much, or not good enough. How she has not believed in herself for so long, thinking she’s never attractive and skinny enough to attract anyone, was such an eye-opener for her the moment she knew she needed to change. Find out how travel and life experiences help you to look beyond yourself and your focus on food. She actually found an acronym for questions she needed to ask herself to get past her food dilemma, and this has worked for her. Find out about it; it might help you, too. When you feel like your cravings win over you, she has the best solution to that without depriving yourself but still having an awareness of trusting your food decision. Often, we look for solutions that give us fast results, but when it comes to emotional mastery why should we give it more time and practice it needs just like other areas of our life? The memory we attach to food gives an insight into our focus on it. Learn what it is, recognize it, understand it and deal with it. There has to be healing in every transformation before the total turnaround, and it’s important to allow yourself to go through it to move ahead. There is no one-solution-fits-all; that’s why you need to find out what works for you. Staying on your track to reach your goal is not easy; that’s why Renee suggests that if you can’t hold yourself accountable, find someone else to do that for you. Hence, finding a community that understands your journey and has your back every step of the way is a big help. “I had to face my stuff. Join Mary as she wraps up this month's topic of Self Sabotage. We wanted to wrap up the month with some practical ways to get through self sabotage. Self sabotage will likely be a recurring theme throughout our lives. As we grow and heal, our self sabotaging patterns will likely shift and change, but might not disappear. The real goal is to be able to recognize them sooner, and deal with them in a healthy way that meets them with understanding. When we are able to recognize and approach our self sabotaging behaviors with compassion, we can then identify the areas of our life that need understanding and healing. Taking the judgement away helps us see our own patterns much more clearly, and also will help us identify the benefit we get when we sabotage the things we truly desire. We all want to be seen and heard. We need to not only extend this to others, but also ourselves. When we can take the time to address our emotions, give ourselves what we need, create safety, and write a new story we can begin to see lasting change and create the lives we truly desire! ON THIS EPISODE WE WILL DISCUSS… - We can’t “cure” self sabotage -Recognizing our self sabotage patterns - How self sabotage can help us identify things we need to address - Finding appreciation for the parts of ourselves that has been coping - Tolerating the emotions that come from our woundedness - The importance of self compassion - Rewriting our fear stories to a more liberating truth - How micro steps are the key to lasting change - The 6 steps to end self sabotage - And more! — SEASON 2: Each month will be a deep dive into a topic that supports you on your journey to living more fully alive. May’s topic will be on SELF SABOTAGE. --- Text Me: https://maryhyatt.com/text Follow Me On Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/maryghyatt/ Full List of Episodes & Show Notes: https://www.maryhyatt.com/show Subscribe to My Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/maryhyatt
Recognizing the good in others is like searching for precious gems – it takes hard work, patience, and kindness.
When I was still working my 9-5 and was working with clients, I was asking myself “how do I position my business to leverage beyond 1:1s so I can experience $8-15k months?” Want to know how I did it? Today I’m outlining the 3 key steps I took to be able to leverage my 1:1 offer into a group coaching program. #1 The Conscious Decision to Make Short-Term Sacrifices For a period of time, I made the conscious decision to sacrifice my free time. This meant waking up earlier to work before my 9-5, working during my lunch hour, doing coaching calls with clients in my car during my 2-hour commute, not hanging out with friends--yes, literally all the things. If you want to transition from 1:1 with clients to a group coaching program, then you need foresight. You must ask yourself: What am I willing to sacrifice right now, to position myself for what I want in the future? For how long are you willing to commit to this? Put a timeframe around it. I would not recommend making it indefinite. You are better able to make short-term sacrifices when you know it has an expiration date in the near future. A lot of upfront work must happen in the beginning, in order to build the right foundation to be scaled later; but if you do it well once, then you can leverage it. #2 Recognizing sales as a contact sport When you’re first starting your business, your #1 priority should be infusing an influx of cash into your business. Cash gives you the capacity to actually be able to scale. Commit to making contact with your prospects every day. The more contact you make, the more sales you will have. Commit to doing one live video every day or once a week. Be willing to have conversations - get on the sales calls, have those DM conversations. Actual conversations allow you to convert someone into a $3k, $9k, or $15k program. Sales pages alone won’t do this. #3 Commit to a strategy that aligns with the capacity you have available. If you are a busy mom and wife trying to juggle all the things, and wondering how to scale your business in a way that gives you capacity back, then a leveraged coaching offer is your best bet. Key Highlights of the Episode This episode was extremely actionable and insightful. Here are a few key highlights: What short-term sacrifice do you need to make now, that will position you for long-term success in your business? Short-term sacrifices require you to have a level of discomfort for 6-8 months to leverage your business beyond 1:1 clients later. Sales is a contact sport- if you make enough contact with enough prospects, you will make more sales. Simple as that. The secret to sticking with the commitment you made to yourself, even when you are NOT motivated and don’t feel like doing it I walk you through the best strategy for scaling your business in a lean way, including using organic lead marketing, direct-response marketing, and permission-based sales. And lots more! Tune in now. This episode is brought to you by Leverage: Today’s episode is brought to you by my group coaching program LEVERAGE. “ Yoga was one of the only places I didn't feel like I had to be an overachiever. ” – Linda Wells On this episode of the PlanSimple Podcast, I’m so excited to talk with The Wellness Warrior Linda Wells. Linda is a yoga teacher who believes wellness is your birthright and is on a mission to create a wellness rebellion. She uses yoga to help students develop resilience. Linda says that yoga found her in the most stressful times of her life, even when she didn’t know it was yoga. As a young adult, trying to find her way, she discovered Virupa yoga, a kind of restorative yoga that taught her to sleep. She didn’t practice yoga for a while, but rediscovered it with Leslie Salmon Jones. She loved the energy of Afro flow yoga and realized she could become a yoga teacher and wellness coach. Although yoga has been part of my journey for about 20 years, I’ve never had an in depth conversation about it on the podcast, until now. In part that is a sense of privilege related to yoga. I felt like I was sneaking off to 90-minute yoga classes when I should have been mothering or working. We unpack that idea and how yoga can be more accessible We talk about: making yoga accessible for different bodies, abilities, and time and financial availability teaching love, kindness, and compassion (including to yourself) befriending your body despite what dominant culture tries to tell and sell you practicing so you can age gracefully yoga as a quest to trust yourself checking assumptions about race, body size, wellness, and who can do yoga BIO Linda N. Wells, M.Ed., E-RYT 500 is The Wellness Warrior. Her mission is to create a wellness rebellion by teaching people how to assert personal agency by reclaiming themselves through adaptable yoga. Recognizing that stress may be an unavoidable part of our lives, Linda draws upon her in-depth study to help her students develop resilience in the face of modern life demands. Linda is certified to teach yoga at the 500-hour level. She holds multiple training certificates, including Trauma-informed yoga for youth and teens, Accessible Yoga for people with disabilities, living with chronic pain, and larger bodies. She teaches in various settings, from Boston and Brookline Public Schools, studios, to her highly-attended summer outdoor series, to universities and notable appearances in New England. Linda's formal education includes an M.Ed. specializing in Curriculum and Instruction from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, and BA in Political Science and Economics from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Linda is also a trainer for Resilient Schools and Youth with the Benson Henry Institute for Mind-Body Medicine. Additional certifications include The Institute of Nonprofit Management from Boston University and Reiki Usui Level 2. She is an alum of Northeastern University Community Enrichment Fellows, Citizen Schools Teaching Fellowship and the South End/Lower Roxbury Youth Workers Alliance Steering Committee. LINKS https://www.lindawellnesswarrior.com/ MENTIONED LINK https://melissawest.com/ Invitation to Brave Space by Micky Scottbey Jones Doable Changes from this episode: TRY 5 MINUTES. It’s easy to get stuck in the idea that to do yoga you need an hour or more to go to a class. Linda says that you can do yoga wherever you are in a few minutes. If you’ve practiced yoga before, try a breath exercise or a simple pose for five minutes or less. If you’ve never done yoga there are lots of online tools to help you learn. Check out 5-minute practice and fit that into your day—it can be an energizing start to the day or a great way to unwind at the end of the day. STAY ON YOUR OWN MAT. I love the idea of your yoga mat being your space, and what’s happening off it being somebody else’s stuff. What happens if you just keep pulling yourself back to your mat? If you stop worrying about what other people are doing, how you compare, or what they think about you on your mat? PRACTICE COMING BACK. Linda teaches people to come back to your breath, come back to loving on your body, come back to saying, “Hey, I can do this.” When you start to get angry or stressed or frustrated, practice coming back to your breath. When you start to get down on yourself, practice loving on your body. When you get overwhelmed, come back to “Hey, I can do this.” Notice what you are feeling in your body, and practice coming back.

Even people who may seem effortlessly successful on the outside go through the same kinds of internal struggles as everyone else. Recognizing your power to control parts of your day and to choose consistency in working toward your goals is key to unlocking your full potential. This week, Cleveland Indians Mental Performance Coach Brian Miles talks about being present, quieting the ego, and committing to the challenges you set for yourself. When Miles is running laps in the morning, it’s always tempting to stop at six instead of doing the full nine around the field, he says. He’s honest when he talks about these small bumps in the road throughout the day because it’s important for people to know they aren’t alone in working past that inner voice that sometimes wants to give up. Taking back your power to achieve means making the choice to win the battle and recognizing that you have a say in your own success. It may feel risky or scary at first, but it ultimately opens up more opportunities in the long run. Support the show by using code PODCAST for 15% off at CompeteEveryDay.com!
https://psychologyofeating.online/ss/ Are you ready to transform your relationship with food in a lasting and meaningful way? What if you could help others find the path to greater freedom and joy with food as well? A 25-Year Old Works with Weight & Womanhood In this episode, Marc David, teacher and eating psychology pioneer, works with Tess, a 25-year-old woman from New Zealand. Tess often finds herself compulsively eating, and seeks to transform this pattern, lose weight, and feel more confident. Additionally, Tess wants to be a mother and believes losing weight is key to a healthy pregnancy. Tune in to listen as Marc helps Tess begin a new chapter in her relationship with food and body. Key Insights: Many eating challenges, such as compulsive eating, are rooted in negative psychology. Transforming compulsive eating is multidimensional and unique to each person — there truly isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” approach. Compulsive eating, like other eating challenges, can create euphoria in the body. Recognizing this, we can begin to look for other ways to relieve stress. Learning to love oneself into a better relationship with food means, in part, loving ourselves through our perceived eating “mistakes.” Many of us benefit from the mantra, “I’m not a disappointment. I’m a success.” Train yourself to believe it. With his dual training in clinical nutrition and psychology, Marc David has spent the last 40 years helping people around the world heal their relationship with food. As the founder of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, he reaches millions each year through his books, speaking engagements, celebrated podcast series, and his internationally-acclaimed Mind Body Eating Coach Certification Training. Recognizing that things are not always as they seem
This episode is sponsored by Capital One Business. Some people feel the entrepreneurial itch from a young age and dive in headfirst as soon as they can create something to sell. Others may feel its constant, subtle pull for years while they work for someone else, only giving in once the pain of an unsatisfying job finally outweighs the fear of doing their own thing. Danyel Surrency Jones was quite comfortable in her executive position at a Fortune 500 company, but being told repeatedly that she was “too innovative” finally pushed her past her own discomfort, helped her focus on the skills she had built and how she could apply them to any field. In co-founding POWERHANDZ, an athletic training and rehabilitation product tech company, Danyel is pursuing her life’s goal to improve the lives of others by serving local and global communities, improving health and wellness for all people by bridging the gap in disparities, and ensuring that the company will never have to choose between doing good and turning a profit. Embracing her truth as her superpower, Danyel is living proof that when you follow your intuition you can live your dreams, support yourself and help others simultaneously! Thanks for listening! I have been going through this beautiful journey of remembering and coming back to my true self. And part of it is undoing a lot of the identity around who I thought I was, how I showed up, what I thought I was here to do, and how I was serving. It's definitely been scary and challenging peeling back layers within myself and getting more honest about who I am and what authenticity means for me, but I know it’s exactly where I’m meant to be and that I am so supported on this journey of expansion. I want you to know that if you’re going through the same thing, you are not alone. Your transformation is necessary for you to step into who you truly came here to be, and you are so supported in this process. In this episode: + Embracing the whole process of unlearning and deconditioning to really come back to your true self + Recognizing different ways that we can be doing things other than what it is that we might've been conditioned to do + How not to allow any external voice hold you back from standing in your truth and sharing your light Get The Sacred Funnel Vault here: https://sacredfunnels.com/vault Come hang out on Instagram! https://www.instagram.com/thisistayrae/ Looking for something? Teen depression can be defined as a serious mental condition where the teen experiences prolonged feelings of sadness, negativity, and irritability. These feelings permeate through their social and personal life, causing them to become withdrawn and lonely, thus affecting their self-image and physical life. Teenagers of this generation are required to create a mark for themselves and rise from the choices they make. Choices that are confusing, stress filled and chaotic. Very often teenagers themselves don't understand the gravity of the consequences of the choices they have made. Pleasure seeking and impulsiveness are honored by the media often causing teenagers to make the wrong choices and slide down the road of depression and guilt.
