...in which we congregate at the Armitt, Ambleside for a night of readings, historic press reports, dialect poems and music that celebrate a distinctly Cumbrian Christmas. In the company of Alan Cleaver, Lesley Park, Sue Allan and – on harp and guitar – the Cumbrian Duo, we take a nostalgic trip down memory lane (and beyond) as we learn about seasonal customs from the historic counties of Westmorland and Cumberland: of the 'Waits' who performed dance tunes in isolated valleys; of the 'Merryneets', where dalesfolk would gather for nights of feasting and frivolity; and of the carol-singers of Wasdale, fighting a losing battle against the winter snows. Turning to dialect, Sue regales us with a miscellany of snow terms from the old tongue and champions works of the tragically underrated Cumbrian Bard, Robert Anderson of Carlisle, while Lesley reads one of the all-time classic Lakeland Christmas poems: 'Down t'Lonning'. As we move around the county – from the Ambleside postman's path via Buttermere (and its many pies) to a west coast nativity scene – we're accompanied by winter-time tunes from Ed Haslam and Jean Altshuler, including 'Cold and Raw' and the infamous 'Bleckell Murry Neet'. Alan's book, A Lake District Christmas, is available from Inspired by Lakeland. Sue's book on The Cumberland Bard is available from Books Cumbria. The latest CD from the Cumbrian Duo is sold through Willowhayne Music at naxosdirect.co.uk/search/bleckell Some of their music can be heard at youtube.com/watch?v=xB9CcJLIxKA and youtube.com/watch?v=jbNzqBBTCHk This podcast was recorded at one of our Countrystride Live events. Chatting with Carrie Turansky is always fun, but guys, this gal is such a trouper!  But with her newest novel (Split-Time!!!), The Legacy of Longdale Manor coming out, and with it taking place in the Lake District (we were probably there at the same time!!!), I am crazy excited about this book. Listen in to see what a shepherd's crook has to do with art and two women, a century apart, who both are dealing with daddy issues that only a Heavenly Father can truly help.   Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. What Heart Issues Connect These Two Troubled Women Together? Carrie Turansky and I were both in the Lake District in May (we probably overlapped a few days even! AAAK!), and I love the area she wrote about. I actually looked up Langdale Chase (the house that inspired Carrie's book) as a potential for a book I'm writing in the area. I had decided to move it closer to Ambleside. Isn't it amazing how two authors can take the same inspiration and write two totally different books?  I love that.  The faith elements she's put into The Legacy of Longdale Manor just touch my heart so deeply. Any time you are dealing with a shepherd or fatherhood, I'm all in, and I can't wait to see what she's done with it.  The Legacy of Longdale Manor by Carrie Turransky Two women--a century apart--embark on a journey to healing, faith, forgiveness, and romance. In 2012, art historian Gwen Morris travels to England's Lake District to appraise the paintings and antiques of an old family friend, hoping to prove herself to her prestigious grandfather. While at Longdale Manor, she meets David Bradford--the owner's handsome grandson--who is desperate to save the crumbling estate by turning it into a luxury hotel. When Gwen stumbles upon a one-hundred-year-old journal and an intricately carved shepherd's staff similar to one in a photo of her parents, she's left searching for answers. In 1912, after her father's death, Charlotte Harper uncovers a painful family secret she can only confess to her journal. She and her family travel to the Lake District to stay on a sheep farm, hoping eventually to find a home with Charlotte's grandfather at Longdale Manor, but old wounds and bitter regrets make it a difficult challenge. As Charlotte grows closer to shepherd Ian Storey and rebuilds her shattered faith, she must decide whether she will ever trust in love again. Mary-Frances O'Connor, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Arizona where she conducts studies to better understand the grief process both psychologically and physiologically. She is a leader in the field of prolonged grief, a clinical condition in which people do not adjust to the acute feelings of grief and show increases in yearning, avoidance, and rumination. Her work primarily focuses on trying to tease out the mechanisms that cause this ongoing and severe reaction to loss. In particular, she is curious about the neurobiological, immune, and cardiovascular factors that vary between individual responses to grief. Dr. O'Connor's book: The Grieving Brain: The Surprising Science of How We Learn from Love and Loss gives us a fascinating new window into one of the hallmark experiences of being human. O'Connor has devoted decades to researching the effects of grief on the brain, and in this book, she makes cutting-edge neuroscience accessible through her contagious enthusiasm and guides us through how we encode love and grief. With love, our neurons help us form attachments to others; but, with loss, our brain must come to terms with where our loved ones went, or how to imagine a future that encompasses their absence. Based on O'Connor's own trailblazing neuroimaging work, research in the field, and her real-life stories, The Grieving Brain does what the best popular science books do, combining storytelling, accessible science, and practical knowledge that will help us better understand what happens when we grieve and how to navigate loss with more ease and grace. In today's episode: How Mary-Frances got into the field of bereavement science Why it is so hard and takes so long to understand that when someone dies it is forever Why grief causes so many emotions What happens to the brain during grief How our understanding of grief has changed over time Why do some people adapt better than others when someone passes away What can we do when we are overwhelmed with grief? Can our grief change? Signature Question: If you could tell a younger version of yourself something about grief/grieving/bereavement – what would it be? New Testament partnership is more than a pragmatic aid to mission. It is part of the mission. The book of Jude helps us to be realistic about division in the church and to fight against it for gospel effectiveness, and Philippians 4:14-20 shows an example of what that looks like. The FIEC was founded on the basis of this need to work together and support one another. Andy Hunter, FIEC Director for Scotland and North of England, speaks on the power of partnership. He is joined on stage by Ian Williamson (elder, New Life Church, Middlesborough), Dan Green (pastor, Banstead Community Church, Surrey), Simon (assistant pastor, Parr Street Church, Kendal), and Ray Lane (pastor, Hope Church, Ambleside). There's been some very welcome rain in parts of the country. But the on-going drought has made life very difficult for farmers. Some don't have enough grass in their fields to feed their livestock and are using up winter stores already. Now George Eustice, the Environment Secretary, has announced that Defra is relaxing some of the rules for agri-environment schemes, meaning farmers who are paid for managing some of their land for nature, like wildflower margins around fields, will be allowed to cut or graze it earlier than usual. But what will this mean for the wildlife it's supposed to support? Continuing our week looking at sheep, Caz Graham visits a Cumbrian hill farmer in the northern fells of the Lake District, to hear his frustration at the length of time it's taking to get the post-Brexit farm support schemes up and running. Farm incomes in the uplands rely heavily on the old EU Basic Payment Scheme, and many are worried how they will survive after they are phased out completely in 2027. Sheep farming is controversial, with some conservationists thinking the uplands would be much better off without them. We speak to Professor of Upland Landscapes at the University of Cumbria in Ambleside, Lois Mansfield. Presented by Caz Graham and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

...in which we walk the popular Railway Trail between Threlkeld and Keswick to explore the history of rail in the historic counties of Cumberland and Westmorland. In the company of Peter Rooke, curator of the West Cumberland Railway Museum, we embark on our journey in the pioneering age of steam, when Carlisle offered a west coast port for the metalworks of Newcastle. As lines spread – around the west coast and reluctantly over Shap – we learn about the Lowther decree that split Whitehaven in two and the overseas fate of Europe's then-longest viaduct across the Solway. Entering the tourist age, we consider why golf-loving Scots were the making of Silloth and why La'al Ratty once had ambitions on Ambleside, before arriving in rail's sunset years, when consolidations and Beeching laid waste to many still-lamented rural lines.   You can find out more about Peter's museum – and arrange a visit - at https://www.facebook.com/West-Cumberland-Railway-Museum-1082018475225883/

We have shifted gears at the PPPP and let a couple of phenomenal writers into the mix. After all, there is one poem in this book "We the House." About the book: Mrs. Peale has been dead for 38 years and Ambleside is a new Italianate house on the Kansas prairie when her existential yelp sparks the beginning of an unforgettable relationship. We, the House begins in 1878 in a frontier town on the Kansas prairie where a battered Civil War Union veteran builds his new wife her dream house, an Italianate glory she names Ambleside. Soon an early American portrait of Mrs. Simon Peale arrives from Hartford, Connecticut to dignify the dining room wall. When the portrait's existential yelp causes house and painting to discover each other, Ambleside is a perfect ‘tabula rasa,' almost literally born yesterday, and Mrs. Peale a devastated young widow, a starchy professor of Latin, who has been dead since 1841. Together, through the lives and generations of ‘their' family, this disarming odd couple witness and try to comprehend the panorama of American social history–from women's suffrage, three wars, the ice box, photography, and the invention of the twoby-four, to indoor plumbing and electrification, the Dust Bowl, the Depression, and Dachau, foxglove, the Love That Dare Not Speak its Name, the song of the catbird, and Little Women. Over the decades, a most unusual love develops between them and quietly deepens, until one day in 2010 an art historian from New York happens to see the portrait of Mrs. Peale and, abruptly, everything changes. With a wealth of history behind them, British Pacific Properties is looking to develop a different kind of future. Now, in a new partnership with Beedie Living, these community builders are proposing some innovative ideas to rise to the challenge while addressing a potential uprising against traffic, the environment and sustainable housing. An exclusive interview with president, and West Vancouver resident, Geoff Croll. The new Upland development, with Hawksley and Wildwood, how does partnering with Beedie affect this? Well, we have entitlements for over 800 homes in Rogers Creek. And if Cypress Village gets approved, they'll be another 3,500 new market homes in Cypress Village. And one of our guiding principles as a company is ‘be a small giant' - which means we focus on getting better rather than getting bigger. So how do we deliver all these homes in a timely fashion without getting bigger? We find someone to work with us. Someone who shares the same core values. Someone who has the same dedication to quality and customer service. Someone who shares our commitment to community - and someone who shares our vision for the future. And the people at Beedie checked all those boxes. We're pretty excited to supercharge our team. The vision is large. The time commitment is enormous. The kind of home we need is changing? What does all that say? We've always played the long game. We've been here since 1931. It's always been a steady, slow progression across the hillside. And we've evolved from the 30s and the 40s and 50s to where we are today. We're addressing the needs of the community. And we have to do it in a thoughtful step by step manner that we can create a community on the hillside that meets the needs of both the new residents and the community that's already here. If you go back to the company's guiding principles, the number one thing is reverence for nature. We have to respect and conserve the natural environment that we have. How do you respond to those who say it's going to make the mountainside too busy - or there's going to be too much traffic? When we did the Rogers Creek plan back in 2008, the number one concern was the environment. Now, 13 years later, it's traffic and housing affordability. Traffic is a major concern in West Vancouver - and so it should be. If you look at where West Vancouver sits, it's at the intersection of Hwy 1 and Hwy 99, and it also has a large ferry terminal that connects the Sunshine Coast to Vancouver Island. There's also a popular ski hill in the most visited provincial park in the province (Cypress Provincial Park). Over a million cars a year travel up and down Cypress Bowl Road - none of it by public transit. So anything we do at Cypress Village will pale in comparison to the existing and future traffic generated by [these roads]. There's a lot that we are committed to doing to reduce traffic. So first and foremost, we are creating a complete community where it is truly possible to live, work and play without getting into a car. The village will provide all the amenities and services people need on a daily basis. Secondly, we're also committed to a developer-funded transit system from day one (at no cost to the taxpayer). We'll provide regular, reliable service to Ambleside and Park Royal using electric buses (carbon-free). Thirdly, we're providing other transportation alternatives to the alternative single- occupancy cars, such as an integrated system of walking and biking paths. We'll also have electric car sharing.

Can business be a force for good? Definitely, according David Hanney, CEO of Alpkit, a business and certified B Corp which designs and sources outdoor clothing, camping equipment, bikes and other gear. Alpkit sells direct-to-consumers through its website and its stores in the UK. It now has more than 100 employees – 6 years ago there were just 12. It's a great business in many ways, as David explains, with a set of six sustainability principles informing how it operates (and central to how it does business). Alpkit must be commercially viable to exist. Alongside this, it knows it has a responsibility to its staff, suppliers, customers, the environment and the communities it operates in to be a good citizen. It's growth has been supported by a responsible finance provider and David explains why and how it secured finance, what the process was, and how it now banks with the mainstream bank which actually referred it to a community development finance institution (CDFI). He also talks through the accreditation process for becoming a B Corp and Alpkit's scores, how Alpkit ran a crowdfunding campaign which was fully subscribed in just minutes, and how in the next 5 years the most innovative and commercially successful products will be sustainable products. We recorded this interview with David in Spring 2021. Since then Alpkit's sustainable growth has continued, with new stores in Edinburgh, Betws y Coed, and Ilkley on top of its shops in Ambleside, Hathersage, Keswick, the Metrocentre. It is about to open in Bristol. What next? Alpkit's website Its Six Sustainability Principles and 2021 Sustainability Report Our member, First Enterprise - Enterprise Loans, has worked with thousands of start-ups and growing businesses (like Alpkit) to help them follow their dreams and achieve their goals.

In August 2020 she improved the female record for the 12km ridge traverse to 5h56m46s from Anna Wells' 6h34m set in 2016. The record is timed from end to end summits, starting at Gars-bheinn and finishing on Sgurr nan Gillean. Kelli and partner Pete Rigby first traversed the ridge in 2018, and returned last year to learn the route and practice the climbing sections. On the record traverse they simul-soloed the whole route including the 4 'climbing sections' which are traditionally included in a record attempt. It was a very hot day and lack of water added to the challenge.
