Kim Six from The Kim Six Fix blog was our guest today. If you’ve never heard Kim do a video or interview, you are in for a treat! She’s so much fun to talk to and hang out with. If you listened to last week’s show, Cher from Designs by Studio C and I were talking about an upcoming “one board” challenge and how awesome Kim’s project was going to be.  Be sure to check out her first scroll saw project, a wooden basket/bowl. *this post contains affiliate links* Can you believe this is her FIRST scroll saw project? Kim has some great tips about finding out exactly what tools you will want to add to your collection. You will love listening to her talk about her selection of tools, and which are her favorites. Kim schooled me on picking up some “no name” brand batteries on Amazon. She picked up an off brand Makita battery  that is holding up well. Kim shares with us why you might NOT want to pick up tools at thrift stores. Oh my! Kim talks about her lawnmower, and it makes me chuckle. Kim shared a story about installing bead board in her home and her son’s new bed, using her favorite tool. (click play to listen to this week’s episode for all the details) Kim discusses using a circular saw to rip 2x4’s because she didn’t own a table saw to make an awesome West Elm inspired Mirror.   Kim compares sawing to quilting, only Kim could do that.   I love Kim’s favorite repurposed project on her blog, it’s made from a repurposed crib, and she has the sweetest reason for it being her favorite. Kim’s question to me is “what is your favorite part of blogging and why do you keep it up, even though the face of blogging is changing”. Thank you Kim for hanging out with DIY with MRL! Welcome to Episode #15 of DIY with MRL. I hope you understand that this SHOW NOTES post is about the podcast that goes along with the blog My Repurposed Life.  If you would like to listen to the conversation I had with Cher Texter, please click PLAY below on the player.     *This post contains affiliate links* Some of the things we discussed in this weeks show are referenced with the following links: Cher offers over 500 free furniture plans on her blog Designs by Studio C. Cher’s favorite project is her kitchen remodel, see those details here: Kitchen (Before) | Kitchen (After) Gail remembers seeing this project, which happens to be the most popular project on Cher’s site. Outdoor Sink (Connecting to Hose) Cher’s most popular furniture build is her Custom Vanity .  She doesn’t repurpose a lot, but does like to participate in the Habitat For Humanity’s REstore and After. See her project by clicking that link. Be sure to keep up with Cher on her blog so you can see the Bench she’s talking about in today’s show.   She will show it off with her  wall mounted desk when it is completed. Gail mentioned her reclaimed wood potting bench, and her mid century modern headboard bench where she used Cher’s idea of tapered legs. Have you seen the organized garage storage that we talked about? 4 Gail proudly mentioned the fact that daughter Jamie and her husband Andy were on Listed Sisters this past June. Cher and Gail are both fans of the Kreg Jig, and prefer buying their pocket hole screws on Amazon.  Both participated in the Power Tool Challenge for August’s theme of a One Board Challenge. Gail recommended checking out Kim Six’ project going up Thursday. One last thing, Cher’s question to Gail was about project fails. Gail’s answer was about a topless coffee table that she has yet to complete from THREE YEARS ago. In addition, she mentioned her most recent “oops” involving a Kreg Jig pocket hole mis-drilled on a coffee table project.   Please remember, this is an audio podcast that you can listen to here on the blog, or you can  Subscribe to DIY with MRL on iTunes, Google Play and Tune In   Thanks to today’s sponsor:   Homeright Finish Max Projects Follow DIY with MRL on Facebook and listen to any episode anytime. Welcome to another great episode of DIY with MRL. The show notes below will help you quickly find the items and projects mentioned in episode #13 How to Deal With Mildew on Furniture. Yes, whether your furniture project has mildew, mold or just plain old musty drawers, today’s show will address tips for dealing with it. This conversation  starts with a question from Barbara who found an antique chair on the side of the road. The first project discussed were the blue gray bookshelves that I got from a neighbor that had a lot of mildew on them from being stored in a dark, damp storage area.   *this post contains affiliate links* Do you have musty drawers, is the next project I discuss. A project was made from a desk that had been stored in the basement, causing the drawers to become very musty. I tried many, many items but I mentioned that Odo Ban was the product that works the best. I still continue to use this product all around the home. Also in this week’s show were comments from friends who had great advice about how they tackle their own musty smelling furniture. There was a product I mentioned that I thought Laura might have been talking about, but the name was escaping me while I was recording the podcast. I’ve used Damp Rid for absorbing moisture in the damp basement. Tru has a great idea for suitcases!  Click play below to hear all about it.   For the project coffee station repurposed buffet, I actually used Clorox Disinfecting Bleach Foamer for the Bathroom to deal with mildew.  For more details click over to the blog post or click play below.   I share briefly how I paint 99% of my projects using my diy chalky paint primer using plaster of paris and Behr paint. I either use my Homeright Finish Max or a cheap chip brush. I explain why I prefer the chip brush over a nice Purdy paint brush, and how I do several light coats for the perfect paint finish.  Click play below.       Thanks to today’s sponsor’s Homeright Finish Max Projects   Follow DIY with MRL on Facebook and listen to any episode anytime. Do you say Reeobee  or Ryeobee?   Serena and I both say Ree!  Serena Appiah from Thrift Diving loves 30 room makeovers, but she’s doing something different—a 30 day outdoor patio makeover. Follow along with Serena as she does her OWN patio makeover as well as a weekly webisode with Ryobi Outdoors showing you that it’s not so overwhelming as you might think.      Accept Serena’s challenge this month to do your own #OutdoorOverhaul and enter to win from Ryobi Outdoors. Serena may build an outdoor bench/sofa similar to Ana White’s design on Ryobi Nation.   Serena talks about her laundry room makeover as well as her Master Bath Makeover .    I got Serena to spill the beans on a new webisode series called Toolin’ Around, I don’t think it has aired yet—because I couldn’t find anything about it. One of the hosts is David Sheinkopf, follow his facebook page to keep up with the latest news on that!   Serena has a new feature on her blog, Reader of the Month, and asked me to be the guest this week.  She also told us that many of her readers mention My Repurposed Life as one of their favorite blogs.   Serena’s favorite repurposed project is a DIY Art Caddy made from a knife block, but right up there is her most proud repurposed item, some wooden salad bowls as feet.   Gail dishes about the best place to get bun feet FREE!   The big question Serena asked me? “if you were not doing My Repurposed Life, or not being a school teacher, what else would you be doing”?  Tune in for the answer to THAT burning question.      A special thanks to our Sponsor this week:     Follow DIY with MRL on Facebook and listen to any episode anytime. Have you been listening to the weekly podcasts? In episode #8 I talk about inspiration. So many people ask me “how do you think of this stuff”?  Tune in to this week’s show to hear a little bit about my thought process.   Above are the projects that were discussed in episode #8, the links and details are below in the show notes:   Be PINSPIRED by following along with My Repurposed Life on Pinterest.   Gail talks about the hall tree she made that was inspired by Debbie from Refresh Restyle. You can see the $2 hollow core doors and more recent finds here.   Gail’s inspiration for marrying 2 pieces of furniture originally came from Sharon S on a message board from years ago. You can see Sharon’s work on her Facebook page, Another Man’s Treasure. You will find lots of inspiration there!   The second $2 door and a $5 dresser mirror were used to make a DIY entry way piece. Gail made the easiest hall tree ever from a door for a Habitat for Humanity event in Madison Indiana.   After seeing a desk/hall table in a magazine, inspiration struck for this project: Ammo Box coffee table Cutting up furniture is a favorite pass time, where these projects evolved from desks: Tower of Terror, desk into a tall lingerie chest.  Another desk into a chest or  lowboy piece of furniture. Early on, Gail was inspired by Ballard Designs to make a drying rack out of an old crib rail. Don’t let your budget deter you. Hear all about junking, and how an old curbed ping pong table plywood was used to make a corner headboard bench.     Thanks to today’s sponsor:   Follow DIY with MRL on Facebook and listen to any episode anytime. Anne actually did a guest post here  on My Repurposed Life a year and a half ago sharing how she made a Christmas tree skirt using a vintage sheet.   Anne sells some of her projects out of her garage during here Vintage Chic Sales. She loves pastel colors so I asked her about something that wasn’t so light and she talked about her Green Kitchen Island. Anne’s best find ever at a thrift store is this shabby chic dresser.  Her favorite repurpose is a desk she recently transformed into two tables. Other than that one, her favorite is  a vintage lamp/funnel planter.   Anne is an Heirloom Traditions brand ambassador, and this is her first piece  using Heirloom Traditions Paint.  (visit HTP and use the code MYREPURPOSEDLIFE to save 10% and free shipping)   Projects and links mentioned by gail: Gail recommends a Ryobi battery powered circular saw, you can see a repurposed desk project using the saw in the post  Dressing Table our of a Repurposed Desk , another repurposed desk project is the Tower of Terror. It’s already time for episode 6 of DIY with MRL! Did you know that most people who give up on podcasting, do so around episode #7. I’m trying to improve with each episode, so I know I have to keep going!   Karen Cooper from Dogs Don’t Eat Pizza was our guest this week. Karen talks about how she got her unique blog name, her largest DIY, and even an (almost) DIY failure.  The conversation also goes toward Thrift Store Shopping. Karen explains to gail the difference in Upcycling and Repurposing. Gail realizes that maybe she “plans” DIY differently than many other DIY experts including Karen.  Karen likes to have a plan. Do YOU plan and sketch? Listen to the podcast to get the behind the scenes details of Karen’s favorite repurposed project using old doors from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.  Her project was even featured in This Old House!! Karen wants to encourage anyone and everyone to be brave enough to DIY and use power tools. Gail also made a project from and old door. When given the chance to ask gail a question, Karen asked what was the first BIG DIY around MY Repurposed Life—which was The Ugly Fireplace Makeover. Jeanie talks about building a  Farmhouse Table that she uses in her fabulous craft room, and a sweet armoire that she built for her granddaughter.
