The PhD is almost over and I've been thinking about “What do I want?” When I committed to the PhD, I knew it was a lengthy commitment of time and hefty commitment of money. There are things we agree to in life and we know the long term commitment it will require! And now that the PhD finish line is in sight, I know it's project time again!! I love a meaty project and I've identified what I want to do over the next 120 days. I want to redo my living spaces, WITH a budget in mind so it doesn't get crazy like it did last year with one project expense leading to another project expense. Do you struggle with this too? Up until I abdicated grocery store shopping and cooking, I hadn't really been on the list. I'd always put my family's needs before my own. If I wanted something, I'd think about the price, and I'd decide we could use the money towards something else the family needed. I'd also give them my time before using it for myself or business. We took care of the kids' living spaces last year. Joey's plumbing got an upgrade which meant his bathrooms got an upgrade too. Then Abby's space basically got completely remodeled, but honestly her life was demanding it. And now I feel like we have finished launching them. And then I got to looking around my living space. And I am choosing to use available time and money for myself and Greg, I'm on the list again. My Wish List on a Budget When Grayson came along, Greg and I started sleeping in separate rooms so I could help with the baby. And we like it, so, we are keeping it that way. Remember, use your home for your current phase of life! I want to cement Greg and I into the empty nest/grandparent phase. In my room, I look around and see all hand me down things. I've dreamed of what this space could be and here's what I came up with. I'd like to have a household manager command center, an office space dedicated to running our house! I'd like to bring up all my Sunday Baskets® and binders upstairs and put them all in one bookshelf for easy access. And new bedding that makes me feel like a girl. I want to rearrange the room to be able to open the curtains and make room for said bookshelf. And I want more light in this room for projects and scrapbooking. I'd like as much upstairs as possible because if I want to get anything done I have to hide from Grayson. He loves to play with me and I love to play with him but, but…I like to get projects done too! My dreaming didn't stop there… Rezoning in the Woodruff Household I've decided the room between Greg and I, which used to be the nursery and then a guest room, should be reimagined into a gift wrapping room. On a previous episode, I suggested HDX shelving with a long counter top to be used as a gift wrapping station. I have not stopped thinking about that and I finally will have time to make this transition happen. I'm no longer using the kitchen as our home office so I'll move those resources upstairs. I'd like to make communal items more easily available to Abby on the first level like band aids and things, maybe in the laundry room. I just need to go through the laundry room period now that Abby has her own and I'm doing all of this reimagining and functionality of our living spaces. Speaking of the laundry room, there's more project supplies that I will move upstairs that aren't for Grayson and I. Gifts for Grayson will go up because he knows the laundry room is my hiding place. AND, all in one washer dryer upgrade. It arrives tomorrow!! I can't believe I hit the purchase button. I did the cost analysis and it's not good but boy is my lil heart excited! We got to talking about it in the small business mastermind and everyone encouraged me to get it saying how much they loved theirs. Also I'm keeping the dryer so I can get two loads done at once. So that justifies the cost a little too. I wanted to get Abby her own washer dryer so I could get mine back. In the process of sharing my washer door would get stuck and then it started to stink! Now the washer smells despite my efforts to correct it. It annoys me! So it's on it's way! And Lastly, I think I'll clean out the closet downstairs. Most of it will end up in my household manager command center and then Abby can get more storage. I hope you'll join me for planning day to get your next projects planned for your next 120 days! Hey friend! So you're ready for a little update or refreshing your space and you don't have a large budget? Using what you already have is easier than you might think, but knowing how to use it can require a bit of imagination. In today's episode I'm sharing my 5 Rs - a strategy I use when I'm ready for a fresh new look in my home that doesn't require an expensive bill or putting items on credit. 5 Rs or updating or refreshing your home deocr 1. Reimagine: Getting yourself into a posture of creativity will help you to see potential changes that you may not have seen before. 2. Rearrange: There are NO rules that say where you have your furniture today is where it needs to be shackled for the next fifteen years. Move it around, experiment, play, have fun! 3. Remove & Replace: Basically - shop the house. Try furniture or small accessories in different rooms. Swap out lamps, side tables, textiles in order to refresh another space. And goodness...check your cupboards and storage for forgotten treasures. 4. Rethink: If you have only look at a dresser and say that dresser can only do ONE job...think again! Rethink its purpose (and beauty) by thinking about how it can function in a different space for a different purpose. Example: a lowboy dresser being used as a sideboard in the dining room. Guaranteed, no one else in the neighborhood will be using the same one. 5. Repair: If you have something that you love that feels beyond repair...think again. Fix it, zhuzh it - paint, stain, new knobs, legs, pole wrap, caning, lighting, wallpaper backing...if you can think it, you can do it. THE Presentations Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Bonseki is a Japanese art creating miniature landscapes, on a black tray using white sand, pebbles and small rocks. They are exquisite but temporary. The bonseki can't be preserved and are an original, throw away art form. Speaking to audiences is like that, temporary. Once we down tools and go home, that is the end of it. Our reach can be transient like the bonseki art piece, that gets tossed away upon completed admiration, the lightest of touches that doesn't linger long. Of course we hope that our sparkling witticisms, deeply pondered points and clear messages stay with the audience forever. We want to move them to action, making changes, altering lifetime habits and generally changing their world. In the case of a business audience, we are usually talking to a small group of individuals, so our scope of influence is rather minute. How can we extend the reach of our message? Video is an obvious technology that allows us to capture our speech live and ourselves in full flight. How often though, do you see speakers videoing their talks? It is not like people are constantly giving public speeches in business. Apart from myself, I don't recall seeing anyone else doing it. You need to tell the audience this is for your own purposes and they will not be in the shot, otherwise you have to get everyone to give you their written permission to be filmed. You may get criticism about being a narcistic lunatic for wanting to capture yourself on video, but the only people who make that type of comment are idiots, so ignore them. With video, instead of a standard business audience of under fifty people, you can broadcast your message to thousands. The video is also an evergreen capture which allows you to keep using the content for many years. Video has the added benefit that you can cut it up and create snippets to take the content even further. You can have ten videos sprung from the original. This again extends the ways in which you can use the medium. People have different appetites for information, so some may want to feast on the whole speech, whereas others want the digest or just the part on a particular topic of most interest. Video has two tracks – the video and audio components and these can be separated out. Very easily you can produce the audio record of the talk. Everyone is a firm multi-tasker these days. I sometimes hear people pontificating that you cannot multi-task, blah, blah, blah. What nonsense. Walking, exercising, shopping and listening to audio content are typical multitasking activities. Busy people love audio because it saves them time and allows two things to be done at once. Now your audio content can be accessed by even more people. Did you know that back in August 2019 Google announced that in addition to text search they were employing AI to enable voice search too. This is taking a long while to roll out but audio books have recently overtaken e-book sales. The audio track can become a podcast episode and be on any of the major podcast platforms. Also we can produce a transcript of the talk. There are AI transcribing services that are very good today which substantially reduce the cost and time of this exercise. Now we have a text version, we can project the value of the content further. It may go out as an email, a social media post or be reworked into a magazine article, or it may become a blog on your website Repurposing of content is the name of the game. The video and or the snippets can be sent out to your email list, put up on social media and always sit there on YouTube. The same can be done with the audio track. Now what was a simple, ephemeral interlude in a room of fifty punters, has developed a life of its own and is being pushed out far and wide. The same message and messenger, but a vastly different impact and duration. If our object is to influence, then we need to make sure we are supporting the effort to give the speech with the tools available to maximise the results. This requires some planning and some expense. But as I mentioned, we are not leaping to our feet every month giving a public speech to a business audience. This is something we would be lucky to do two or three times a year. When you take that into account and consider how much we can leverage what we are doing, we get a lot more bang for our buck. We are going to give the talk anyway, so all the preparation is the same, yet the influence factor can be so much grander.

Renewable and low-carbon molecules are set to play a key role in Europe's transition to a sustainable and decarbonised future. The Hydrogen and decarbonised gas market package entered into force in August 2024, providing a clear regulatory framework for the transport of these energy transition gases and diversifying supply sources. The package also aims to contribute to the EU's energy resilience, security and strategic autonomy objectives.Scaling up and prioritising investments in repurposed infrastructure – such as pipelines for transporting hydrogen and carbon dioxide – are seen as central for energy system integration and stability. These investments are also important deliverables for the new 5-year term of the European institutions, which prioritise growth and competitiveness alongside climate neutrality and strategic energy sovereignty.A European hydrogen backbone is a major step to deliver on decarbonisation. Within this framework, repurposing gas pipelines to hydrogen service can cut investment costs by 50-80% compared to creating new pipelines. The EU Industrial carbon management strategy calls for the implementation of a net-zero industry act target of at least 50 million tonnes of CO2 storage capacity. This will require connecting emitters with storage sites. However, little detail is provided on how to enable hydrogen and CO2 infrastructures on time and at the right scale to serve transition to a new energy landscape.Listen to this Euractiv Hybrid Conference to discuss the role of repurposed pipelines in delivering the EU's decarbonisation targets. Questions to be addressed include:- What are the best strategies to address the contribution that hydrogen and carbon dioxide infrastructure can provide to achieve EU climate targets in a cost-efficient manner?- How can the current regulatory and funding frameworks for hydrogen and carbon dioxide infrastructure help - or hinder - the necessary investments?- How and to what extent does repurposing of natural gas pipelines help in reducing energy costs for industry competing on a global scale and lowering the bills for EU households?

In today's fast-paced technological landscape, the rapid evolution of hardware often leaves older devices obsolete, particularly when it comes to operating systems. The increasing requirements for modern operating systems, such as Windows 11, pose significant challenges for charities and individuals looking to repurpose older laptops. However, one viable solution that not only extends the life of these devices but also promotes sustainability is the installation of Linux operating systems. The Challenge of ObsolescenceAs technology advances, operating systems and software applications demand more from hardware. Windows 11, for instance, requires at least an 8th generation Intel CPU, along with other specifications that many older laptops do not meet. This creates a dilemma for organizations like charities that receive donated laptops. While these devices may be functional, their inability to run the latest operating systems often leads to their disposal or relegation to e-waste recycling - a process that is not only environmentally taxing but also wasteful. The Benefits of LinuxLinux emerges as a powerful alternative for repurposing old laptops. Unlike Windows, Linux distributions (or "distros") are designed to be lightweight and flexible, making them suitable for older hardware. Here are several compelling reasons to consider Linux for repurposing old laptops:Compatibility with Older HardwareMany Linux distributions are specifically tailored to run on older machines. Distros like Ubuntu MATE, Lubuntu, and Xubuntu are known for their efficiency and can breathe new life into laptops that struggle with more demanding operating systems.Cost-EffectiveLinux is open-source and free to use, which means that charities and individuals can install it without incurring licensing fees. This is particularly beneficial for organizations that operate on tight budgets and seek to maximize the resources they have.Security and UpdatesWhile Windows 10 is approaching its end of life and will no longer receive security updates unless users pay for extended support, many Linux distributions offer regular updates and support from their communities. This ensures that users can maintain a secure computing environment without the looming threat of outdated software.Diverse Software EcosystemLinux provides access to a vast array of software applications for various needs, from productivity tools to multimedia editing. Users can find alternatives to popular software that runs on Windows, allowing them to perform everyday tasks without the need for expensive licenses.Community SupportThe Linux community is known for its robust support networks. Users can easily find help through forums, online documentation, and user groups, making it easier for those unfamiliar with Linux to transition smoothly.Environmental ImpactBy choosing to install Linux on older laptops, we are not only extending the life of these devices but also contributing to a more sustainable future. E-waste is a growing concern, with millions of tons generated each year. Repurposing laptops with Linux helps reduce this waste by keeping devices in use longer and minimizing the demand for new hardware. In an era where environmental sustainability is paramount, this practice aligns with broader efforts to reduce our carbon footprint and promote responsible consumption.ConclusionRepurposing old laptops with Linux is a practical and sustainable approach to technology that benefits both individuals and the environment. As discussed in the Piltch Point podcast, the challenges posed by modern operating systems can be mitigated through the adoption of Linux, which offers compatibility, cost savings, security, and community support. By embracing this alternative, we can ensure that older laptops continue to serve their purpose, providing valuable resources to those in need while reducing electronic waste. In doing so, we take a meaningful step towards a more sustainable and responsible technological future.

“We bereaved are not alone. We belong to the largest company in all the world—the company of those who have known suffering.” ― Henry Ford Check Out These Highlights: No one escapes tragedy, trauma, or loss. How we choose to deal with it determines whether we move forward or get stuck. Everyone grieves differently, yet our small actions may save us, keep us living our lives, and help us move forward with grace. This is an essential topic to discuss since every human faces loss during life. About Theresa Bruno: As the founder and designer of Jordan Alexander Jewelry, Bruno has designed pieces for Oprah, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Hudson, Pink, and Michelle Obama, who named her a favorite designer. She is now the host of The Soul Talks Podcast. Theresa Bruno's life reads like a fairy tale in many ways. Like life, though, fairy tales are often darkened with tragedy, and Theresa's life is no exception. She has suffered more than her share of pain. However, she is still writing her story, and in this chapter, she is vanquishing the fear and shame that gutted her after her husband's death and the sudden collapse of her business by bringing it into the light and talking about it fearlessly. Room by Room: The Home Organization Science Insights Podcast
Did you know that the average U.S. household throws away about 32% of the food it buys? This week on Room by Room: The Home Organization Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella interviews environmental engineer Belinda Li on what households can do to limit their food waste by reusing or repurposing them. Specializing in solid waste management and food system planning, Belinda Li employs holistic and innovative approaches to solving complex challenges, leveraging her interdisciplinary background in engineering, data analysis, research, global development, and community engagement. On a mission to create a sustainable and just food system, Belinda Li is the co-founder of Food Systems Lab as well as principal engineer at her very own Mei Mee Consulting Inc. In this episode, Belinda Li elaborates on the environmental and economical implications of food waste, from the forfeited efforts of the supply chain, to large contributions to greenhouse gases. Additionally, she reveals that viewing it simply as ‘food' rather than ‘food waste' or ‘scraps' can help immensely in reframing food waste perspectives. Together, Marie and Belinda Li look at various ways to incorporate old or leftover foods into new dishes. So, tune in to this episode to learn more about revolutionizing your approach to kitchen scraps! Tannen wants to know how to create a solid marketing strategy. Barbara is struggling to get people to subscribe. Ralph doubts he is even reaching anyone. Jeffry wants to know how to get started. The struggle Vanessa is facing is confidence without sounding arrogant. Michael's biggest struggle is finding people to help him. THE MARKETING STRUGGLE My biggest struggle is building a solid marketing strategy? How do I take my show and chop it up for a week's worth of social posts? When do I post them to create consistency? -Tannen There are a variety of AI tools that can help you create chunks of content. Repurposing your content on social media does two things for you. First, it helps you connect with your current listeners keeping them coming back. Next, sharing on social in the right way can help you reach new listeners. This includes TikTok and reels. Most social media only reaches your followers. These two platforms put your content in front of new people who might be interested. To grow your show, you need to find new listeners who don't know you. I recommend you record your podcast on video to begin. Use the video for YouTube to get discovered. You can also repurpose parts of the video for social media content. Then, use the audio from the video as the podcast. Use this for social content as well. Create captioned social media videos, quote cards, audiograms, and social posts. AI can help you create a lot of this. However if you don't have time, you can always pay someone to do it for you. How much is your time worth? Two tools I really like. The fist is CastMagic. You can find my affiliate link at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/castmagic. The other tool I love is Opus.pro. It creates captioned social media videos for your podcast. Find my affiliate link at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/opus. Let me help you. Visit www.podcasttalentcoach.com/editing. You can get a week's worth of social content for every episode. GETTING SUBSCRIBERS My biggest struggle is getting subscriptions. How do I get people to subscribe to my podcast? -Barbara Start with the why. When we try to get people to take action, such as subscribing to your podcast, we often rely too much on logic. People make decisions emotionally. Then, they justify those decisions with logic. When you spend too much time on the steps in your process, the features in your program or the content on your podcast, people don't take action. Nobody cares about your details … yet. Spend more time on the why. Stir emotion. Make your audience care. Then you can get into the details. AM I REACHING ANYONE My biggest podcast struggle right now is actually more of a struggle of faith. I've been doing the show daily for over a year and I sometimes doubt whether it's actually reaching anyone. Since I do a Christian based show, I know that God is always faithful and I simply need to trust in his timing and do the work. It's just hard some days when I look at the analytics. -Ralph Share that on your podcast. Be real. Touch people emotionally. Spittin' Chicklets just shared a piece on their show. It is a show about hockey. Whit is former NHL player Ryan Whitney. Biz is former NHL player and NHL hockey analyst on TNT Paul Bissonette. When they talk about being “in the room”, they are talking about being in the locker room. This audio comes from episode 545. It is an example of remembering why they do it. So Biz was, sitting in the Delta Lounge, I believe, at the airport, and a guy came over and dropped off this letter. I'm gonna read it to you quick because Biz sent it over to the guys. He said, “I listened to you guys when my life was falling apart. Just having the pot on in the background made me feel like I was back in the room. At sometimes, I was as bad as it gets with mental health, family, booze, etcetera. Since then, I've quit drinking two plus years now, and me and my family, wife and two little girls have made it out the other side, and we're doing great. You guys will never know how much comfort and support I got from just having the pod on and bringing me back to a good spot. You and Whit and all the boys saved my life. Sorry to bother you on your day off. Thank you, Nick.” And Biz, like, made it clear to us, like, reading something like that, man, he's got it right there... This is why we do it. What you're doing is important, Ralph. Keep at it. I STRUGGLE GETTING STARTED My biggest podcast struggle is just getting started. How do I find the confidence to take the first step? -Jeffry You can do this. We eat an elephant one step at a time. Break it down. In my Podcast Launch Accelerator, we build your podcast step-by-step. First, define your why, your topic and your idea target listener. Next, develop your show structure. Will it be solo, interview or something else? Get some equipment. You'll need a mic, a laptop and some headphones. Download Audacity to help you record and edit. It is free software. Hit record and share your thoughts. Export your audio as an .mp3. Upload it to your audio host, like Libsyn. Connect your host to all the podcast players. Take it one step at a time. SOUNDING CONFIDENT How do I sound more confident and less arrogant. -Vanessa This is an interesting question, Vanessa. I'm not sure how you can be arrogant without being confident. People want to know what you know. Share it with them. Share yourself and your story. Let people fall in love with you. As Zig Ziglar said quite often, “You can get anything you want in life as long as you help enough other people get what they want.” Give. Help people reach their goals. Then, offer to give them more help for an investment. On this show, I offer a ton of free advice. I would hope you don't feel like I'm arrogant or egotistical. Take my content and put it into action. However, I'm here when you want more help. When you need someone to walk you every step of the way, reach out. I'm more than willing to have that conversation with you. Believe in yourself. Some people will love you. Others may not. And that's ok. Attract the people who love you for who you are. THE TIME STRUGGLE My challenge is finding time. It's hard doing it by myself. My biggest podcast struggle right now is finding people to help me. -Michael Schedule it. Put it on the calendar. What gets scheduled gets done. You can also get a co-host. Share the work. Hire a virtual assistant to take the easy stuff off your plate. This could include creating show notes, posting your episode, and the other rote work that is the same week after week. As we discussed earlier, you can hire an editor. You can see my work at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/editing. What is your time worth? Hiring an editor allows you to show up and share your magic. Then, you can hand it off to someone else to do the dirty work while you spend your time getting more clients and generating more revenue. LET ME HELP YOU I'd love to help you. You can send me your struggle and I'll answer it here on the show. Visit www.podcasttalentcoach.com/contact. You can send me a note there. If you're really serious about overcoming your biggest struggle, we can also sit down for an hour of coaching. I can take your hand and walk you every step of the way. To get the details, go to www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply, click the button and apply to have a chat with me. We will develop your plan and see how I can help and support you to achieve your podcast goals.
In this episode of the Vital Health Podcast, host Duane Schulthess speaks with two key voices driving the PRIME-ROSE initiative: Gro Live Fagereng, Project Manager of the EU-project PRIME-ROSE and Coordinator of Precision Cancer Medicine at Oslo University Hospital, and Henk van der Pol, Ph.D. Candidate at Leiden University Medical Center. Repurposing & Upcycling for Preppers | Episode 351 In a world where waste is abundant and resources can be scarce, learning how to repurpose and upcycle everyday items is a vital skill for preppers. Not only does it save money, but it also enhances self-sufficiency and sustainability. In this episode, we'll explore creative ways to repurpose common household items for survival, homesteading, and emergency preparedness. Why Repurposing Matters Repurposing isn't just about saving money—it's about making the most of what you have and reducing waste. In a survival scenario, the ability to adapt and innovate using limited resources can mean the difference between comfort and hardship. By upcycling, you give new life to old materials while keeping them out of landfills. Household Items with New Uses Glass Jars – Use them for food storage, DIY oil lamps, or fermenting vegetables. Plastic Bottles – Turn them into water filters, seed starters, or emergency water storage. Tin Cans – Create camp stoves, candle holders, or small storage containers. Old Clothes & Fabric – Repurpose for insulation, rags, or even patching gear. DIY Fire Starters Creating homemade fire starters is easy and ensures you always have a reliable way to make fire. Some simple and effective methods include: Dryer lint and wax-stuffed egg cartons Cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly Sawdust mixed with melted wax Upcycled Water Storage & Filtration Instead of throwing away old food-grade containers, repurpose them into emergency water storage. Use 2-liter soda bottles for water purification systems or build a rainwater collection system using barrels. Homemade Tools & Gear Preppers are known for their ingenuity. With some creativity, you can make survival tools from scrap materials: Paracord belts – Woven belts or bracelets for emergency cordage. DIY fishing kit – Use soda can tabs as fishing hooks. Homemade knives – Repurpose old saw blades into knives or tools. Garden & Compost Hacks Gardening is a cornerstone of self-sufficiency, and repurposing materials can make it even more cost-effective: Turn plastic tubs into self-watering planters. Use eggshells and coffee grounds as natural fertilizers. Convert old tires into raised garden beds. Repurposing Old Electronics Even broken electronics have valuable parts: Salvage batteries and wiring for DIY solar setups. Turn an old car alternator into a small wind turbine. Use old laptops for emergency communication setups. Creative DIY Lighting If the grid goes down, lighting is essential. Some creative upcycling ideas include: Mason jar solar lights. Oil lamps using cooking oil and a wick. Repurposing broken flashlights into LED lanterns. Final Thoughts Repurposing and upcycling is more than just a frugal practice—it's a mindset that helps preppers stay resilient and resourceful. With a little creativity, everyday items can serve multiple purposes, ensuring that nothing goes to waste. Tune in to Episode 351 for a deep dive into these DIY survival skills!

This week, we hit the streets of Rome with our recording equipment to search for ancient ruined artifacts or “spoglie” hidden in plain sight. Rome has been inhabited without interruption for over three thousand of years. A past like that cannot but leave its mark on a city. And if you keep your eyes open, the vestiges of Rome's ancient past can be found around almost every corner. From the fluted Corinthian columns walled into the sides of nondescript buildings to the piazza that follows the shape of the ancient stadium it was built upon, from the crumbling Roman buildings that found new life as Renaissance palaces to the fragments of ancient decoration plastered into the walls of medieval buildings…the history of Rome is palpable in its very urban fabric. You don't have to visit an archeological site or even a museum to discover the city's many layers of history. Just take a long rambling walk through Rome's historic center and you'll find the tangible ghosts of the ancient city coming to life all around you. Want to follow along with us? Here's a list of the stops we make on our passeggiata: • Ponte Fabricio • Torre dei Caetani (*Note: Tiffany mistakenly refers to it as the Torre dei Crescenzi in the episode. Oops!) • Portico Of Octavia • Theater of Marcellus (and Palazzo Orsini) • Largo di Torre Argentina (and the Cat Sanctuary) • Piazza Navona (and Sant'Agnese in Agone Church) • Piazza di Pietra and the Temple of Hadrian PS If you'd like to book a walking tour of Rome with Tiffany, read about her tours here.
