The San Jose Hockey Now Podcast is sponsored by Bring Hockey Back! Quentin Musty (and Igor Chernyshov?) are coming to San Jose! OHL expert Brock Otten of McKeen's Hockey joins the pod to talk about the seasons of these top San Jose Sharks prospects. (1:33:16) But before we talk about Musty, Chernyshov, Sam Dickinson, Kasper Halttunen, and more? Let's talk about the San Jose Sharks' recent play, including the end of Shakir Mukhamadullin's season and their lack of response to Frank Vatrano. (5:13) Let's be honest, Lane Hutson has moved ahead of Macklin Celebrini for the Calder Trophy.  Our thoughts on Cam Lund and Luca Cagnoni's NHL auditions. (30:32) Keegan is upset that Nikolai Kovalenko, Danil Gushchin, and Thomas Bordeleau haven't gotten enough of a shot with the San Jose Sharks. We also talk about Barclay Goodrow, Zack Ostapchuk, Ty Dellandrea, Noah Gregor, Patrick Giles, and Carl Grundstrom in the bottom-six. (40:13) Logan Couture made waves by following and unfollowing the San Jose Sharks on Instagram. (1:10:55) We also talk about the San Jose Barracuda and Yaroslav Askarov's return. Sheng also shares his thoughts about Musty's trade request earlier in the season. (1:16:04) And now, Brock Otten and his OHL expertise! (1:33:16) We talk Musty and Chernyshov, their NHL comps and ceilings, and why Otten is more excited about Chernyshov at the moment. Who's more ready for pro hockey? (1:34:07) What's Dickinson's ceiling? Otten is a big fan, but he's also aware of Dickinson's possible shortcomings. (1:56:56) How much has Halttunen's overall game grown? Otten is super-high on Matthew Schaefer. Who does he have at No. 2 or 3 for the 2025 Draft? No. 3 is a surprise! (2:09:22) Otten also shares some under-the-radar OHL prospects in the 2025 Draft.  Check out the McKeen's Hockey 2025 Draft Guide, coming soon! Their Prospects Report is also coming soon…the San Jose Sharks rank high there!

Should the San Jose Sharks have traded for David Jiricek? (1:23:35) Keegan and Sheng talk about it on this week's episode of the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast! But before we talk Jiricek, we chat about the latest San Jose Sharks' news and their recent inspired play. What did we think of Joe Thornton's jersey retirement? (04:45) We talk about Sharks prospects who were invited to their World Junior selection camps like Sam Dickinson and Brandon Svoboda -- and about prospects who aren't going to World Juniors like Will Smith and Quentin Musty. (09:40) Meanwhile, the San Jose Sharks have been playing some good hockey. (25:33) We discuss Rookie of the Month and NHL 1st Star of the Week Macklin Celebrini, and what Sheng was worried that Will Smith was going to lose (but didn't). Keegan runs a lap for Fabian Zetterlund around Timo Meier, and praises William Eklund. We credit GM Mike Grier for his veteran additions like Alex Wennberg, Jake Walman, and Timothy Liljegren. Obligatory Luke Kunin reference. (57:51) Keegan doesn't think that Grier will trade Mackenzie Blackwood. (1:19:05) Finally, let's talk David Jiricek! (1:23:35) Before Jiricek got traded to the Minnesota Wild, Sheng talked with a lot of his sources about Jiricek. What does the rest of the league think of Daemon Hunt and Jiricek? Does Jiricek project as a top-pairing or top-four blueliner? What's the San Jose Sharks' best equivalent to the Wild's 2025 first-rounder…William Eklund, Shakir Mukhamadullin, or Musty?…and would Sheng or Keegan have parted with any of these assets for Jiricek? (1:38:06) Which prospect would you rather have in your system, Jiricek or Yaroslav Askarov? Thanks for watching and subscribing to the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast!

Why do certain musty or animalistic aromas, like barnyard or manure, become more acceptable to wine lovers over time? What does minerality really mean when it comes to wine? Why is mouthfeel so important to appreciating wine? How does the colour of wine influence our perception of how it tastes? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Master of Wine, Gus Zhu. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Giveaway Two of you will a copy of his terrific new book, Behind the Glass: The Chemical and Sensorial Terroir of Wine Tasting. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose two people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck!   Highlights Why do certain musty or animalistic aromas, like barnyard or manure, become more acceptable to wine lovers over time? What's behind the perception of saltiness and minerality in wine? How do we misunderstand sweetness when it comes to wine? Why have we developed more complex perceptions of bitterness, and how does it influence our experience of tannins in wine? Why is mouthfeel so important in wine tasting? How does colour affect our perception of wine? What are the most interesting aspects of oak aging in wine, and why is there so much diversity? Why is it important to embrace sensory differences in wine tasting?   Key Takeaways Gus believes that the wine industry or even the media is trying to promote a certain style of wine and make people believe that many people love wines that have specific smells and taste like barnyard. Gus observes that acidity and minerality are such vague terms and concepts that people in the wine industry discuss. When people say minerality, they may be referring to many different things. Mouthfeel adds several other dimensions to taste, which makes wine tasting even more interesting. When blind tasting, many people depend on smell but he encourages them to pay attention to the textual, tactile sensations from the wine as well. People usually look at the color first because it's straightforward, even though we could see colours a bit differently from each other. Even though we want to be objective, we cannot. We could be even more biased when we see things first. For example, there are already studies showing that if you color white wine as a red wine colour, and ask people to smell it, they came up with all these descriptors that are related to red wines.   About Gus Zhu Gus Zhu is the first Chinese national to become a Master of Wine. He works as a research and development scientist at Harv 81 Group, specializing in chemical analysis and sensory studies of aroma compounds in wine, cork, and oak. Gus holds a Master of Science degree in Viticulture and Enology from UC Davis, which he earned in 2017, and achieved his MW qualification in 2019. In addition to his research in flavor chemistry and sensory science, Gus is a professional wine educator, offering tutorials to wine enthusiasts around the world.         To learn more, visit https://www.nataliemaclean.com/308.

Why Did I Get Cancer?
76. MOLD: Can That Musty Smell Make You Sick? (RE-RELEASE)

Why Did I Get Cancer?

Play Episode Listen Later May 16, 2024 40:59

I learned much from today's podcast with mold expert Bridgit Danner. I've never given much thought about mold and the impact it could have on chronic disease or even cancer! When Bridgit explained that chemical warfare is often made from a mold, she got my attention! If mold is strong enough to be used in a bomb, what kind of havoc can it create in my body? Listen to today's episode to learn more about this fascinating topic.   Information About Today's Guest, Bridgit Danner: www.BridgitDanner.com Links to Bridgit's Books: The Ultimate Guide to Toxic Mold Recovery: Take Back Your Home, Health & Life Your Complete Guide to Health Recovery from Toxic Mold According to Dr. Isaac Eliaz: "You may not be aware of it, but mold is probably affecting your health. So even if it's not on your mind, “how to detox your body from mold” should be something we all need to be asking. Even if mold is making you sick, you might not know it's the source of your symptoms. That's because mold toxicity can act like many other conditions, so it often goes misdiagnosed and untreated. Exposure can cause many different symptoms, including: Fatigue Cough Shortness of breath Fever Headache Joint pain Memory problems Dizziness Sinus infections Wheezing Trouble concentrating Sensitivity to light Skin rash Digestive problems One of the main reasons mold toxins can cause so many different symptoms is this: These toxins can suppress or damage your immune system. Not only can they bring on symptoms themselves, they can make you more vulnerable to other illnesses. Surrounded by Mold Mold exposure is shockingly common. It's found in the air, damp or water-damaged buildings, even the food you're eating. Foods that commonly contain mold include cereal grains, nuts, spices, coffee, bulk foods (like the kind you buy from bins to save money) and dairy products. You come across mold inside and outside, and it can travel around with you. Mold spores can attach to things like: Clothing Shoes Pets Reusable grocery bags That means it can come home with you from just about anywhere. And if it ends up somewhere even slightly damp, it will grow and multiply. In nature, mold speeds up the break down (decomposition) of things like dead trees and fallen leaves. Some molds are used to make cheese or create antibiotics. But many types of mold can be hazardous to your health. These molds produce mycotoxins, poisons that can cause severe health problems and a wide variety of symptoms. The two most common harmful mycotoxins are aflatoxin and ochratoxin, and exposure to either (or both) of these can trigger substantial health issues — from chronic allergies to cancer. What's more, if your body can't remove these toxins on its own, they can slip into long-term storage to cause lasting or recurring damage. Mycotoxins Damage Your Health Mycotoxins are sneaky. While mold itself can't enter your bloodstream — though it can hang around and colonize in spots like your nostrils and lungs — mycotoxins can get into your bloodstream and circulate throughout your body. These opportunistic toxins can hijack your immune system, making you more vulnerable to infections. If your immune system is already compromised (such as people with autoimmune conditions or undergoing cancer treatment), mycotoxins take advantage. If you're healthy, they can make you very sick. Studies show that mycotoxins can: Cause lung inflammation that can make it harder to breathe Disrupt your gut health by reducing beneficial bacteria and encouraging pathogens Trigger chronic fatigue syndrome Affect brain function and cognition Cause liver damage, including cancer Worsen allergy and asthma symptoms Unfortunately, mold toxicity is frequently misdiagnosed. Because of its wide-ranging effects, it's typically mistaken for other conditions including depression, multiple sclerosis, or autoimmune conditions. Plus, because mycotoxins are opportunistic, they're often connected with debilitating diseases such as Lyme disease, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and fibromyalgia." Now that I have a better understanding of the processing of the fish before it hits my plate, it makes me wonder about quality. I called a friend who works at ButcherBox and asked her about the process with their salmon. She assured me that BB only freezes the fish ONCE! Which helps preserve the nutrients and taste. The big one for me is texture. When I eat fish, I want a firm texture, not rubbery! After getting over my shock (yes, fooled again by the food corporations) I asked my BB friend if I could pretty-please offer free salmon to my community. She said yes, so if you use the code 'enos', you can get free salmon (2 pounds) free for a year and $20 off of your first box. https://www.butcherbox.com/enos This podcast is for informational purposes only and none of the information should be construed as medical advice. Mysterious smells can be frustrating, but there are steps you can take to identify and eliminate them. Here are some tips: 1. Increase Ventilation and Fresh Air Open windows and doors to create a cross breeze. This will help to dilute and remove the odor from your home. Run exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathroom while cooking, showering, or cleaning. 2. Identify the Source Do a thorough inspection of your home, including the kitchen, bathroom, basement, attic, and behind furniture. Look for anything that might be causing the odor, such as spoiled food, mold, mildew, or dead rodents. Pay attention to the type of smell. Musty odors could indicate mold or mildew, while sweet smells could be rotting fruit. 3. Eliminate the Source Once you've identified the source of the odor, you'll need to remove it. This may involve cleaning up spills, disposing of rotten food, or calling a professional to remove mold or mildew. 4. Neutralize the Odor Here are some natural odor neutralizers you can try: White vinegar: In a spray bottle, mix equal parts white vinegar and water. Spray the affected area and let it air dry. Baking soda: Sprinkle baking soda on carpets, upholstery, or mattresses. Let it sit for several hours, then vacuum it up. Activated charcoal: Place bowls of activated charcoal around your home to absorb odors. Commercial odor eliminators are also available, but be sure to choose one that is safe for use in your home. 5. Deodorize Fabrics Wash fabrics that may have absorbed the odor, such as curtains, rugs, or pet bedding. Deep clean carpets and upholstery according to the manufacturer's instructions. 6. Consider an Air Purifier An air purifier can help to remove odors from the air. Look for an air purifier with a HEPA filter, which is effective at removing allergens and odors from the air. 7. Call a Professional If you can't identify the source of the odor or if it persists after you've tried these tips, you may need to call a professional cleaning service or odor remediation company. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/moodkillers/message

It's a notable Wednesday as a looming UAW vote at the Chattanooga VW plant gets under way. We're also talking about a new set of “trust principles” regarding autonomous vehicles, as well as a brand collab between Carvana and pro gaming. The voting begins this morning to determine whether or not to unionize the VW plant in Chattanooga.  In a dramatic move yesterday, Southern governors issued cautioning statements directed at the 4300 auto workers at the plant, warning that  voting for UAW union representation could threaten their jobs.Southern governors from Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas have publicly opposed the unionization, linking it to potential job risks and investment losses. This union drive is part of the UAW's broader strategy to organize nonunion auto factories across the South, affecting nearly 150,000 workers.Volkswagen has expressed neutrality, respecting the workers' right to a democratic vote and ensuring privacy in the voting process.Tennessee Governor Bill Lee said, "We are seeing in the fallout of the Detroit Three strike with those automakers rethinking investments and cutting jobs. Putting businesses in our states in that position is the last thing we want to do."In a call back to 2019, it looks like autonomy may be in the sights of industry experts and culture as yesterday the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association (AVIA) published their “Trust Principles.”Self-driving cars like those from Cruise and Waymo have contributed to a growing public skepticism, following several troubling incidents including accidents and traffic disruptions.AVIA aims to enhance community relations and educate the public about AVs, planning to establish a national council with law enforcement and first responders to improve emergency situation responses.Recent events underscore the urgency of building trust; a Cruise vehicle in San Francisco was involved in a serious incident last October, raising concerns over safety and transparency. The industry's broader challenge includes distancing itself from systems like Tesla's Full Self-Driving, which are often confused with fully autonomous technologies.Carvana is collaborating with NRG and Rocket League influencer Musty for a unique giveaway, offering gamers a chance to win a Tesla Model 3, blending the excitement of esports with a high-stakes prize.Musty will personally deliver the Tesla to the winner, enhancing the connection between virtual gaming achievements and tangible rewards. The giveaway follows the successful Carvana | NRG Combine event, which highlighted emerging talent in the esports arena and awarded a $10,000 prize and a content creator contract.Carvana's Ryan Keeton and NRG's Brandon Tortora emphasize their commitment to memorable experiences and further engaging the esports community.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Examine how Musty was put in an uncomfortable situation without Dalibor Dvorský and had to work in his own zone more but could still help create offense for his teammates. Then, Shakir Mukhamadullin's game against the Tucson Roadrunners on January 3rd and why he is close to being NHL ready. Start with his ability to create offense and how he makes life easier for his defensive partner by creating space and knowing when to utilize his large frame to help make that space. Also, discuss how he is refining the finer points of his defense with his ability to shut down the opposing team at the blue line and cover large amounts of space quickly. Finally, Luca Cagnoni's December 31st game against the Vancouver Giants displayed why the points may not be there; Cagnoni is the engine of the Winterhawks.
