If you've been around here for a while, you already know—I'm an email marketing geek. Not the kind of geek who builds robots in her basement, but the kind who gets excited about subject lines and open rates the way some folks get excited about the first tulips of the season. That's why chatting with Ellen McDowell Strauss felt like talking to an old friend who also happens to alphabetize her spice rack. Ellen and I first connected over our mutual affection for email, but our latest conversation had a more urgent tone—thanks to Microsoft's recent announcement that could throw a wrench in the way we all send emails. If email is your small business's secret weapon, it's time to sharpen it. Main Points from the Conversation: Microsoft's Email Policy Changes Microsoft has announced stricter deliverability rules—emails that don't get opened or clicked may not make it into inboxes at all, even if the sender is marked safe. This shift will force marketers to pay more attention to engagement metrics like never before. List Hygiene is No Longer Optional Holding onto disengaged subscribers could hurt your deliverability. Cleaning out your list—removing folks who haven't opened or clicked in 6–12 months—isn't just good housekeeping, it's mission critical. Quality Over Quantity Big lists are out, and meaningful lists are in. A smaller, engaged audience is far more valuable than a bloated list of people who aren't paying attention. Smaller Campaigns, Better Results Ellen suggests sending smaller, staggered campaigns to improve sender reputation. Large blasts might raise red flags, even if your content is solid. Strategic Email for Every Stage Email can't be one-size-fits-all anymore. You need tailored messages for prospects, new clients, and past clients—each stage should feel intentional and personal, not like you're just checking a box. Actionable Takeaways: Audit Your List: Check who's been opening and clicking. If someone's been snoozing for over 6–9 months, it may be time to let them go—or offer a re-engagement path. Segment Your Sends: Break your list into smaller groups and stagger your email sends to improve visibility and avoid being flagged. Lean on Third-Party Tools: Ditch BCC blasts. Use trusted email marketing platforms (like Constant Contact, Mailchimp, or Robly) that work hand-in-hand with email providers to boost deliverability. Craft Content with a Purpose: Make every email part of a bigger story. Whether it's educating, engaging, or asking for a review, know your audience and meet them where they are. Rethink “Set It and Forget It”: Email marketing isn't a crockpot dinner. It's more like sourdough—needs regular attention, care, and a little love.

Brand teams are obsessed with differentiation, but what if distinctiveness is the real power move? And while you're chasing loyalty, your competitors are winning with reach. In this episode, Matt Maynard, Asana's Head of Brand and Advertising, joins the show to challenge the dogmas of B2B brand strategy. From calling out the cult of rebrands to exposing the limits of loyalty and the illusion of celebrity endorsements, Matt lays out a new playbook rooted in evidence. He unpacks how real brand growth comes from building mental availability, not just big ideas, and why most marketers still mistake folklore for fact.We dive into:Why most B2B brand teams are optimizing for creativity instead of outcomesThe distinctiveness vs. differentiation smackdown (and why it matters more than ever)How AI is the ultimate sparring partner—not just a creative sidekickWhy brand characters beat celebrities in the long game of memoryHow Asana is automating workflows to bring brand science into every touchpoint
The 4% rule gets talked about like gospel in retirement planning. But let's be honest, it's always been more of a rough guess than a golden rule. Now, its original creator is revising it to 4.7%. The 4% rule gets talked about like gospel in retirement planning. But let's be honest, it's always been more of a rough guess than a golden rule. Now, its original creator is revising it to 4.7%. So, does that mean your retirement paycheck just got a raise, or is this just another headline that oversimplifies a complex decision? In a world of volatile markets, tax surprises, and rising longevity, the idea that one percentage could work for everyone isn't always the best default approach. Here's some of what we discuss in this episode:

The 4% rule gets talked about like gospel in retirement planning. But let's be honest, it's always been more of a rough guess than a golden rule. Now, its original creator is revising it to 4.7%. So, does that mean your retirement paycheck just got a raise, or is this just another headline that oversimplifies a complex decision? In this episode, Lee explores the deeper reality behind this rule change and why your withdrawal rate should depend on more than just a headline number. While a higher number might feel like a green light to spend more, Lee emphasizes that real retirement planning requires a personalized approach, not just a rule of thumb. From sequence-of-returns risk to changing needs over time, this conversation helps unpack why no single rule fits everyone. Here's what we discuss in today's show:

In this special episode, you get to be a fly on the wall for a powerful live coaching session with Julia Nedry, a therapist who's making the leap into the world of coaching.Julia joined me after participating in The Profitable Coaching Business Bootcamp and winning our “Get Coached on the Podcast” prize. She came into the session full of excitement — she had already created a thoughtful and structured signature coaching program… but there was one big problem:She didn't know how to talk about it in a way that would help someone understand why they would say yes to coaching vs. therapy. We also discovered that she needed to get even more clear and specific about her niche, messaging about the outcomes of her offer — the specific transformation it provides, who it's really for, and what outcomes they are really desiring for themselves!.(And spoiler alert — that's one of the most common places for brilliant, capable practitioners to get stuck.)So in true Passionate & Prosperous style, we got to work.In this coaching session, you'll hear us unpack:Why “helping people with anxiety” is too vague when it comes to selling coaching (even if it's your wheelhouse in therapy)Why “20- and 30-somethings who feel stuck” is not a niche — and how to get more specificWhat messaging actually is — and how it goes way beyond just describing your processThe difference between selling a coaching program and selling the results it deliversHow to figure out what your ideal clients are actually looking for so you can speak directly to themWhy your framework means nothing if people don't understand what your offer helps them achieve in real lifeBy the end of the session, Julia experienced a total breakthrough, shifting from someone who felt stuck trying to explain a coaching program to someone who could finally own the transformation she's here to deliver. She walked away with crystal-clear messaging, a deeper understanding of what her ideal clients actually want, and the confidence to start showing up and selling her offer in a whole new way.If you've ever felt like your offer makes sense in your head but doesn't seem to land with your audience, or if you've been wondering why people aren't saying yes, this episode will change the way you think about marketing your work. You can connect with Julia on LinkedIn and Instagram.Get Full Show Notes, Event Sign Ups and More Information Here:http://www.staceybrassrussell.com/podcast
In this week's episode of Fintech Recap, Jason Mikula and I break down a surprisingly busy run of headlines. The IPO window is open after all: eToro priced above its range, Circle (the issuer of the USDC stablecoin) is eyeing a debut, and we can't not dig into Chime's S-1. First up: the S-1 heard round the world. Chime has finally filed to go public, and it's … complicated. Is it a payments company? A bank in denial? We unpack the Rorschach test (Alex's gloss) that is Chime's business model. Plus, a look into Chime's $1.5B in marketing spend and the real question that's not really a question but a comment: Chime still hasn't cracked credit in a compelling way? Next, it's the open banking implosion no one saw coming. The CFPB's open banking rule (Section 1033) could be overturned (yes, everything the CFPB has done since 2022 could be wiped off the map, including 1033). Jason and I walk through how the legal and regulatory whiplash could kill the broader API economy, spark a screen scraping renaissance, and more. Then, stablecoin legislation enters the chat. The GENIUS Act (yes, that's the real name) is gaining steam in Congress, but the fine print matters. We dig into what the bill actually allows (yield or no yield?), what banks are really scared of, and why the next few years could make or break trust in digitally-issued (nonbank) monies. Plus, we can't let go of the recent NYC crypto kidnapping straight out of Law & Order. When you're self-custodying and everyone knows what your “bank” holds, well … maybe the next era of crypto will finally learn what old money always knew: real wealth whispers.
