This time Walker and Cameron talk about whether it’s OK to talk about their personal lives. Recorded on April 12th, 2017 Email us at andstuffpodcast@gmail.com Tweet at us at @andstuffpodcast   Cameron likes to use steno as a sekrit code. Walker likes to use Volapuk as a sekrit code. NOLA Maker Faire NIST Turns out, Maryland is 12,407 mi^2, and Rhode Island is 1,212 mi^2, so Maryland has the same area as 10.24 Rhode Islands. New Orleans trad jazz. Walker attended Bsides NOLA 2017 and attempts to explain the different subfields of the tech industry and what infosec even is. Here’s a Stack Exchange question that sort of addresses the same idea: https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/3772/what-are-the-career-paths-in-the-computer-security-field Red Team, Blue Team, Purple Team. One thing about infosec is that the threat model https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Threat_model always seems to be changing. Is anonymous even real? This time we talk about saws, meditation, Youtube, and some other things. Email us at andstuffpodcast@gmail.com Follow us on twitter at @andstuffpodcast ----more---- Followup: Button (false start) DIY Activities Catchup Cameron is still doing cardboard. And Walker has joined him in cardboard-land by making a  breakout board. Still considering applying some conductive paint. Here’s this cardboard furniture video that we’re finding inspirational. On the other end of the low-budget-diy spectrum, here’s Walker’s Tazo Tea Tin APC Video. The bodily-kinesthetic style of learning is why Walker keeps moving away from the microphone while talking. Followup: Don’t worry, Walker’s coworker calls him Robert. Cameron’s cardboard sewing stand is still working out well. Walker made a blog post about the Run Off Groove Ruby (a Gainclone-esque design using the LM386 Power Amp), which is similar to the Marshall Mini-Stack that they sell at trendy places to trendy people. Cameron thinks guitar amps are too fancy and complicated but the 5F1 Champ just has a volume control so yeah. It’s responsive, wooooooo. Cameron also thinks that Russell Brand’s videos are full of woo. We talk a little bit about how Mike Dukakis doesn’t really look that dumb now that we have Trump to compare him to. Topic: Youtube Traffic Anomalies We talk about how awful it was when youtube changed comment systems to be integrated with Google Plus, but how everyone has forgotten about that by now, and how Walker’s traffic seems to suggest that GooTube has been tweaking their algorithms recently. Twitter reply changes are coming soon, so we’ll see if twitter conversations improve or not soon enough as well. Walker has been using the worst twitter client ever, for the lulz. We discuss guitar microphone techniques for a bit while waiting for Walker to find the oysttyer twitter client info. Topic: Meditation The quote Walker butchers was from 5by5 After Dark 24: After Back to Work 16. Topic was about not letting fear rule your life but also talking about how it makes us human. Turns out the exact quote wasn’t quite as related to the topic as Walker remembered.     Did you ever hear an interview with Kuklinski the serial killer? He worked with the mob as a hit man, he was like the definition of a psychopath. In any case, this interview is fascinating, because the interviewer would ask him questions like, like at one point he was in a fight with some guy who was gonna shoot him, and he asked him “weren’t you afraid?” and he said “yeah I was afraid but it didn’t bother me”. Did it hurt when you got shot? “Yeah it hurt but it didn’t bother me.” There’s some really good discussion of sitting practice and meditation in episodes 10-20 or so of B2W. Episode 16 is one of my favorites. Walker’s been trying to start a sitting practice so we discuss it from a very high level. Probably too high of a level. Is meditation supposed to help you deal with things that have happened to you? Or is it supposed to prepare you for things that might or will happen to you in the future? Is it supposed to help you control your own mind and will? Or is it supposed to help you be less judgemental about the things your mind and body do that are out of your control? We’re not going to be able to find the answers here, of course, but it’s a good start to decide to start practicing. This is the guided meditation Walker has been using, but sometimes he just meditates on “Mu”. We discuss a little bit about Rinzai vs. Soto Zen Buddhism and brainstorm some ideas for how to get started with clearing your head. One of Walker’s big problems is the Brain Crack. Aftershow: Saws Cameron is gonna try to rip some logs. You used to have to use a saw pit, but now there’s frame saw, circular saw, hand saws. You can rip with a track saw or a band saw, but with a band saw you’re limited in log width. We’ll probably just have to do a whole episode on saws sometime. Meantime, here’s a thorough description of “saw geometry” that should clear up any confusion.

This time Cameron and Walker talk about cotton and a little about music and some other stuff. @andstuffpodcast andstuffpodcast@gmail.com Walker tries to use the Hydrogen drum machine as a sound effect board, but is afraid to restart the Jack Audio Connection Kit to get his MIDI controller recognized. We discuss how decibels are a relative unit, but what are they relative to? No one knows. Chromatic Aberration is something that annoys people with thick glasses–first pointed out (to me) that it’s a problem with Apple’s UI by Siracusa. The ubiquitous “magic fireball” sound effect is possibly best known for being from Doom II. Jeb! begs people to clap, which is very sad and has become something of a meme. Walker talks about how he now works with cotton, which is mildly interesting. Naturally, Cameron already knew that pima cotton is the best. Here’s a Cash back card comparison to help you all game the system. February is InCoWriMo–International Correspondence Writing Month. Tweet at or email us if you want a letter. Walker got some overpriced stationery with sperm whales on them but couldn’t remember which whale it was because there are too many shapes and sizes of different cetacea. February is also Record Production Month. Some of the music from the X-Files is sparse, but here’s the theme song, which isn’t. According to Wikipedia, there is actually is a stylistic relationship between Stravinsky and Glass. Cameron likes Audacity just fine. Here’s an Art Assignment video about the idea that anyone could have painted that, but didn’t. Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack to Interstellar and the story of its relatively sparse instructions from director Christopher Nolan, also known for Memento. Music of the band Rachel’s reminds one of said soundtrack because of the usage of ostinato. Is Windows 10 going to be like Theseus’ Ship? Adobe’s fear of genericized trademarks becomes absurd when they instruct us whether or not it is ok to use the word “photoshop” as a verb. Google had a similar blog post on how to use the word Topeka. Walker likes to use a fuzzy clock, and here is the one he uses at work. Possibly to reduce cognitive load–a recommendation from “people in the know“. This is the Canvas L.L. Bean Shirt whose medium is larger than it used to be. Maybe Walker should have gone with neoprene clothing instead since it is actually the next big thing?

This time we talk about ... stuff? andstuffpodcast@gmail.com @andstuffpodcast on twitter soyeahandstuff.podbean.com Walker decided to get a TWSBI Eco after reading a blog post by David Rea going into a bit of physics and materials science. Cameron is mildly interested in pens, but couldn't do a whole podcast about it like "those guys". This primer on nibs explains what a "stub nib" is. Despite hearing about them many times, this blog post by Brad Dowdy is probably what made Walker decide to actually look into getting a pen with one. Nathan of Noodler's ink has a youtube video up about the story behind the "Charlie" eyedropper pen that Walker talked about. Cameron wants to get more into uploading videos. Looks like he did since we recorded. Here's a link to Walker's old shredder unboxing video. Look at all the potential discussion topics on wikipedia to use during unboxing videos! Walker found DIY cat tree/condo inspiration here. The kind of "fake joinery" Walker is doing is mostly inspired by the Mere Mortals Workbench designed by Steve Ramsey, although lots of people use this technique. Here's an article for further reading on types of twine. Here's another one. Walker is mixing other people's old forgotten tracks that he found on a Zoom R16 multi-track recorder. Here's Bob Clagget's first Arduino Programming Tutorial video on the I Like To Make Stuff channel. And here is Making It, the podcast he does. More information about arduino can be found on the website. This is what Process Controls is. Controls engineers use something called SCADA. Walker will soon be working with slivers. Arch Linux and its wonderful online documentation can be found here. When using GNU/Linux on a computer Cameron usually uses Lubuntu, a spin of Ubuntu, and Walker usually uses Debian, but sometimes uses Fedora. The desktop environment is the part of many GNU/Linux systems that actually determines what things you see on the screen. Cameron uses LXDE, while Walker is all about XFCE. Here is the Bakelite video on Periodic Videos. Love this channel. Some tracker-based music programs for linux are qtractor and lmms. Walker can't remember which one he used to make the And Stuff Opening Theme Song. Amsynth is the softsynth Cameron has been experimenting with. Walker recommends using a kernel with the PREEMPT_RT patch for music production. He uses a kernel for Fedora that comes patched from Planet CCRMA at Stanford University. It seems that similar things are available for Ubuntu. The programs Walker rattles off that he uses in music production are Jack, Whysynth, Hexter, Alsamodularsynth. Thanks for listening!
