“The Greatest Batman Analogues” started as a companion to our “Greatest Superman Analogues” episode but it quickly grew into a conversation about how powerful and impactful a Batman could or should be. Many Twitter dorks including us have tried to put real world morality on this particular comic book character given our frankly natural suspicion and disdain for billionaires. It isn't actually clear that the original creators of Batman wanted his wealth to be a key part of his badassery in any way besides gadgets and free time. Almost all of the original comic book men of action were rich. Zorro, The Phantom, The Green Hornet, hell The Scarlet Pimpernel! But those guys aren't Batman. In interrogating what exactly constitutes a Batman analogue maybe we can recontextualize the character. Maybe we can find out what areas his “sons” can investigate to carve out their own place in the pantheon of awesome “regular humans” who fight alongside the super gods. Follow us! When and how are SSAs used?3. Which SSA should a patient be on? What is the difference? How do you decide?4. How do you know if a SSA will be helpful? Should ALL NET patients be on a SSA?5. What about patients whose tumors don't “light up” on a DOTATATE scan?6. How long can someone stay on a SSA?7. What side effects may patients experience from the shot? What can patients do to prevent or manage these symptoms? How might it affect one's day-to-day ability to work and function? Can I live a “normal life” while taking this medication? 8. If the tumor is growing does this mean the SSA did not work? Do you continue it when patients are treated with another treatment? When do you stop a SSA?9. What is the future of SSAs? I heard there is a pill that is available in a clinical trial. CaFor more information, visit LACNETS.org.
For episode #76 of "The Weekly Bioanalysis", Dom and John talk about the popular topic of GLP-1 Analogues - these series of recent blockbuster drugs with multiple applications, as well as some of their bioanalytical challenges. First, the guys go over a little bit of the mechanism of action of GLP-1's, then some of the rules around them and their initial diabetic treatments. They talk about the structures, and a little bit about how they are being used in weight loss (which, of course, is how these drugs have become so popular in mainstream culture now). Finally, they will discuss some of the resulting supply chain issues and even some of the bioanalytical challenges and what the future of these GLP-1 Analogues might be. It's a jam packed show - really an interesting, fascinating topic the guys enjoy discussing. “The Weekly Bioanalysis” is a podcast dedicated to discussing bioanalytical news, tools and services related to the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and biomarker industries.
What in the Weather? podcast recording - February Iowa's wettest year and severe winter storm in 1993. Major winter storm brought heavy snow and freezing rain to Iowa in 1993, with totals ranging from 13-20 inches. Weather forecast and climate notables in Iowa. Dan Fillius asks Justin Glisan about the weather forecast for the coming week, with a focus on eastern Iowa. Glisan provides details on the expected precipitation, including a 10th of an inch across the state and a quarter to half an inch in eastern Iowa. In north central Iowa, the frost depth was shallow, around 5 inches, despite cold temperatures, indicating good infiltration. The National Weather Service measured unfrozen soil on top of the shallow frost depth in Johnston, just north of Des Moines. Glisan: Snowpack on ground reflects solar radiation, keeps temps cool. Winter weather patterns in Iowa. Dan Fillius and Justin Glisan discuss the coldest temperatures in Prem gar, Iowa, with negative 28 degrees on January 14th. Dan Fillius and Justin Glisan discuss the warmest winter on record in Iowa, with February being the fourth warmest, driest, and least snowy on record. Climate change and El Niño are contributing to the warming trend, with faster winter warming than summer warming and impacting jet stream patterns. Glisan and Dan Fillius discuss the possibility of a rapid shift from El Niño to La Niña in the upcoming summer months, with a 73% chance of ENSO neutral conditions and a 55% chance of La Niña in the July-September timeframe. Glisan provides an analogy to 2016, when a rapid shift from El Niño to lightning occurred, and suggests that near-normal to elevated precipitation potential may occur in California due to the shift. Randall Vos joins the show to discuss the impact of the unusual winter on fruit crops. Plant dormancy and chilling hours. Randall Vos explains the concept of chilling hours, which is how plants keep track of temperatures between 35-45°F to determine when to wake up from dormancy. Chilling hours are important for fruit varieties, with most requiring between 1000-1300 hours, depending on location. Randall Vos discusses the importance of choosing fruit tree cultivars adapted to the local climate, as warmer winters may require more chilling hours for proper growth. Randall Vos mentions that grape growers are looking for cultivars that break bud later to mitigate risk, with a 3-4 week difference in budbreak between grape varieties. Fruit tree cultivation and potential risks due to warm winter weather. Randall Vos expresses concern about early budbreak in blackberries due to warm temperatures, and mentions a new model (the Utah model) that predicts negative chilling hours when it gets hot. Randall Vos expresses low hopes for peach crop due to bud damage, while still having high hopes for sweet cherries. Randall expresses concern about the impact of warm winter weather on crops, particularly grapes which have an "insurance policy" to produce a secondary bud. Weather patterns and their impact on agriculture. Analogues to 2011-2012 drought and 2018-2019 wetness observed in Midwest weather history. Vegetable farmers dislike cold, wet springs the most. Weather forecasts and their impact on agriculture. Glisan and Dan discuss the Climate Prediction Center's seasonal outlooks, including the lack of a clear signal for precipitation or temperature across the upper Midwest, with a warm signal still present in the region. The March one-month outlook released about a week ago shows a bullseye of above average potential for precipitation west of Iowa and below average potential across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley, with Iowa in the middle. Some Amish farmers prioritized other pressing chores over ice harvesting during cold snap.

Beginning with its roots in Siberia, we will connect it with similar traditions around the world, examining everything from ancient cave art to studies on altered states of consciousness. Finally, we will consider what this universal phenomenon says about the human condition. Who are “The Greatest Superman Analogues”? What makes a good one? Are there any that are as resonant as the original superhero? These are the questions we ask in this episode and the answers may surprise you. In modern times it seems as though we want to deconstruct everything and the Superman mythos is certainly one of the easiest targets. Why not make a character that looks like the big blue boy scout but he lasers people to death or runs a criminal cabal or serves an alien race instead of championing Truth Justice and whatever the hell? It's fun to subvert a wholesomeness we've come to see as trite in our cynical age. This conversation shows just how hard it is to deconstruct/reconstruct one's own ubermensch. Superman analogues have been featured in some of the best and some of the worst comics. So listen as we try to get down to which of these shadows of the original man of steel make the cut as their own characters and not just pale imitations. Follow us! "The Analogues decided to start a mission to perform all six of these albums in their entirety. Did the world need another tribute band? Probably not. But The Analogues are anything but a typical tribute band. Their mission: to play those iconic, never-performed Beatles albums live - after all. Integral, one by one. No wigs, no costumes, but an obsessive attention to authentic musical details, using the same vintage instruments, amplifiers, sounds, live strings and horns. ‘Just the music' as recorded by The Beatles in the Sixties. Only live." - The Analogues Website The Trout interviews Diederik and Felix band members of The Analogues. Nick talks to chemist & patent attorney Dr. Andrew Chadeayne, who is the CEO of the psychedelic startup CaaMTech. They discussed: the chemistry of magic mushrooms, including compounds beyond psilocybin, found in many species of psilocybin-containing mushrooms; the so-called entourage effect, the idea that multiple compounds found in plants and fungi might work together in a synergistic fashion to produce specific psychoactive or therapeutic effects; Cannabis and magic mushrooms; DMT, 5-MeO-DMT, and novel DMT analogues; how we went from academia, to patent law, to founding CaaMTech; the prospect of developing novel psychedelic drugs, non-hallucinogenic psychedelic drug analogues, and some of the details on how these various drugs differ in terms of their chemical structure.
