Welcome back to another After Dark episode here on the Iron Sights Podcast. My guest today is Cliff Byerly — former U.S. Marine, LAPD Gang & Narcotics Officer, and founder of Hill Country Combatives.Cliff has spent decades immersed in high-risk environments — both in law enforcement and in training — and he's one of those guys who brings a raw, unfiltered honesty to everything he does. I met Cliff out at the Combatives Summit 2025 in D'Iberville, Mississippi, and after missing the chance to sit down with him the year before, I wasn't about to miss it again. In this episode, Cliff and I dig into his background, his time in the Marines and LAPD, and his mission with Hill Country Combatives — teaching realistic, force-on-force tactics to help law enforcement professionals survive high-stress encounters. We talk about training philosophy, mindset, and the hard truths about what it really takes to be effective in violent situations.Cliff doesn't sugarcoat anything. He's straightforward, opinionated, and deeply experienced. You'll hear stories, lessons, and perspective from someone who's lived it — both on the street and on the mat.If you're into combatives, law enforcement training, or just honest conversations about performance and survival, this episode will hit home.Sit back and enjoy this After Dark conversation with my guest, Cliff Byerly of Hill Country Combatives.Timestamps:00:00 Intro04:17 Cliff's Background08:04 LAPD Experience18:02 Law Enforcement Today28:41 Training Mindset38:60 Fitness & Growth46:45 Policing Evolution57:40 Grappling in Policing01:17:46 Lessons & Mindset01:29:29 Training Gaps01:47:15 Closing ThoughtsRed Dot Fitness Training Programs:rdfprograms.comOnline Membership (Full Access To All Programs & Virtual Coaching):https://www.reddotfitness.net/online-membershipVirtual Coaching:https://www.reddotfitness.net/virtual-coachingSelf-Guided Programs:https://www.reddotfitness.net/Self-Guided-Programs1Connect With Us:Website - https://ironsightspodcast.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ironsightspodcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/

Afterdark represents one of the purest expressions of who I am as an artist; the embodiment of “Dark Markus.” Inspired by the late-night portions of my open-to-close solo sets and the Down the Rabbit Hole club experiences, it captures those hours when the dancefloor transforms into something deeper, more hypnotic, and spiritual. Every transition across this four-hour journey was carefully crafted; each movement and tempo shift designed to evolve naturally, guiding you deeper into the shadows. From driving energy to haunting melody, Afterdark 2025 is a continuous story told through sound, where no moment stands alone and every passage leads to the next. This is music for the night people; the ones who understand that when words fade, flow is everything. It's the 11th year of doing this, and I hope you enjoy it as much as ever.

It's another wild Friday night inside P3 Studios as Scott Powers holds down the fort while Keith Maki checks in from Toledo for a late-night ride filled with music, mischief, and a little bit of mayhem. Scott kicks things off with a sharp, witty opening monologue before diving into the night's lineup — featuring music from Electric Dick Massage, Chrome Ass, Blackened Echo, and the one and only MC Pete. Keith takes over with his signature Blunt Talk, complete with his latest UFC picks (and a friendly reminder that if you win off his advice, he gets 14% — no exceptions). Then it's time to flip the record for Beyond the A-Side, where Keith unearths the hidden tracks that deserve more love. Scott wraps things up with a quick Pod Update before he and Keith tackle the big question of the night: “To Blunt or Not to Blunt.” Expect laughs, unexpected turns, and the kind of offbeat chemistry that only happens After Dark. So dim the lights, pour a drink, and tune in — it's Powers Point After Dark, where the night never stays on the rails for long.

Welcome back to another After Dark episode here on the Iron Sights Podcast. My guest today is Jerry Wetzel, founder of Red Zone Threat Management Systems. Jerry's a lifelong martial artist, gym owner, and educator whose mission is simple — to provide real training for real people to survive real violence. We sat down right after the Combatives Summit 2025 in Mississippi and got into everything from his philosophy on violence and self-defense to his experiences as a coach, business owner, and lifelong learner. In this conversation, we unpack the mindset and methodology behind Red Zone, the importance of realistic training, and how Jerry's perspective is helping reshape how people think about personal protection. We also talk about his new journey into social media, why communication matters as much as combat skills, and how to stay grounded in a space that can often get weird or misunderstood. If you're passionate about martial arts, combatives, or personal defense — or just want to hear from someone who's constantly learning and evolving — you'll get a lot from this one. The driving force behind Uniquely Milwaukee is storytelling. Most of the time, it comes in the form of a news-style piece. But this episode breaks from that while still putting at its center the stories that get to the core of how we as humans connect and better understand one another.Sharing our experiences helps us be more compassionate and can also inspire others to open up. One of the places that happens is a local platform that Uniquely Milwaukee host Kim Shine helped create — something that gives storytellers of color an opportunity to share their truest selves on stage. It's an event called AfterDark: For the Culture, a collaboration between HYFIN and Ex Fabula. We've got another one coming up Nov. 13 at Radio Milwaukee, and in this episode you'll hear four stories from past tellers: Alice's Garden executive director Venice Williams offers a humorous ode to her five uncles who protected her, were boldly themselves and may have had a few girlfriends. Matthew Lewis goes a different route. Instead of telling a story from his life, he shares a poem dedicated to his favorite person — his 10-year-old self who was discovering the magic in being a different kind of boy. Christine Reardon talks about figuring out who she wanted to be at 14 years old after being saved on a train in New York by three women who worked on the TV show A Different World. Finally, Milwaukee hip-hop artist El Sebas combines a few stories from his life — idolizing his father as a child, translating Spanish into English for his relatives, and meeting the woman of his dreams. #####Episode host: Kim ShineUniquely Milwaukee is supported by our Radio Milwaukee members and sponsored by the Milwaukee Public Library.
After Dark with Hosts Rob & Andrew – Violence surges across Africa as Christians in Nigeria face mass killings and persecution, while Sudan descends into another genocidal crisis. Millions are displaced amid famine and atrocities in Darfur. Global leaders and media voices demand action, questioning why the UN remains silent as civilians suffer under militias and extremist groups targeting faith and ethnicity...

This time around on Huskers Happy Hour, we contemplate a finish to the 2025 season without Dylan Raiola. The Blackout was a rousing success…except for not winning the game. After looking a little shaky when being tossed into the fire against Southern Cal, T.J. Lateef takes over at QB against UCLA in a Big 10 After Dark matchup in the Rose Bowl. The players have a mantra for it, but Emmett Johnson's explosion onto the national scene may be the best weapon for helping T.J.' find success. In any case, we have plenty to cover and may have a guest to give a rest from 100% of my voice. So pile in and fire up your comments. What do the Huskers have to do to avoid another LA sweep.

It's Halloween night on Powers Point After Dark, and the studio's got a chill in the air that's not coming from the AC. Scott kicks things off with a haunting monolog that sets the tone for a night of ghosts, laughter, and everything in between. Keith checks in from Toledo, shades on, relaxed as ever — but something strange starts to build in the background. The first half of the show rolls smooth — music, memories, and mayhem — until Blunt Talk hits. That's when things get… weird. Static cuts through the feed. Voices whisper on the line. Lights flicker. Keith swears it's just Toledo weather, but Scott knows better — the spirits aren't happy the mics are still on. From there, it's chaos and comedy in equal parts. The crew pushes through interference and unexplained noises to keep the show alive. By the time they hit the “Hire / Fire / Relocate / Escorts” segment, it's not just monsters and slashers in the unemployment line — the ghosts have joined the queue, too. It's spooky, it's funny, it's After Dark at its best — where the laughter keeps rolling, even when the spirits try to shut it down.

Have you ever been to an Irish wake? If so, you may have heard of the ancient tradition of keening or the superstition of the 'hungry grass'. In this episode, Dan is joined by the hosts of the After Dark podcast, Dr Anthony Delaney and Dr Maddy Pelling, to explore some of the historic rites and beliefs surrounding death and mourning in Ireland. Anthony explains the role of 'keening women' - once persecuted by the government and the church - who would wail and lament at the graveside (and air any mistakes the deceased may have made) as well as the procession down the 'corpse road' and the customs of covering mirrors and opening the window at the point of death.Warning: this episode has an instance of explicit language. If you want more Halloween listening from Dan, Anthony and Maddy, you can check out this episode on The Origins of Halloween here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6MEO4AI9cbO0PtEH5l4zyZProduced by Freddy Chick and edited by Matthew Wilson and Dougal PatmoreSign up to History Hit for hundreds of hours of original documentaries, with a new release every week and ad-free podcasts. Welcome back to another After Dark episode of the Iron Sights Podcast. My guest today is my good friend John Valentine, who officially holds the record for the most appearances on the After Dark series. John's been part of the show since the early days — from his philosophy on combatives and coaching to his role in shaping the Combatives Summit into one of the most respected gatherings in the training community. In this conversation, we debrief the 2025 Combatives Summit, recorded just a day after John returned from the event. We talk about what went down on the mats, the lessons learned, and how collaboration—not competition—drives progress in the combatives world. John also shares updates on his journey as a BJJ black belt, match director, and instructor, diving deep into his process, growth, and approach to teaching. If you care about performance, mindset, and purpose in training, you'll take a lot from this one.Timestamps:00:00 Intro04:51 Summit Recap06:13 Training Mindset10:49 Facing Fear18:17 Realistic Scenarios40:55 Instructor Highlights50:30 Personal Updates55:29 Continuous Learning01:07:50 Future PlansRed Dot Fitness Training Programs:rdfprograms.comOnline Membership (Full Access To All Programs & Virtual Coaching):https://www.reddotfitness.net/online-membershipVirtual Coaching:https://www.reddotfitness.net/virtual-coachingSelf-Guided Programs:https://www.reddotfitness.net/Self-Guided-Programs1Connect With Us:Website - https://ironsightspodcast.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ironsightspodcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/
