In Episode 12 Paul and Austin break down the exciting news that football has been given the green light to have a season. With a 5-game schedule released starting March 18 with Central at Clovis (but with no playoffs) they discuss what the season will look like in the TRAC including Covid testing and if fans will be allowed at games. They also talk about baseball’s start date at the end of March.
In Ep. 11 we welcome Clovis West girls basketball coach Craig Campbell, the architect of 15 straight league championships, eight straight Central Section and the 2017 CIF Open Division State champs who finished No. 1 in the nation. A native of Reno, Nevada where he got his start in coaching at a young age, Coach Campbell shares stories of his interactions with Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant and the inner workings of what it takes to build an elite high school program.
In Ep. 10 Paul and Austin welcome 2017 Clovis West grad and Nebraska Cornhuskers record setting quarterback Adrian Martinez. Martinez discusses his recruitment to Nebraska, what it’s like to play QB in the Big10 (and all those historic stadiums), and how he balances football, school and life at a major university. He also talks about his playing days at Clovis West, his life-long friendships and what he learned throughout rehabbing his shoulder injury that cost him his senior year.
In Episode 9 Paul and Austin talk with Clovis softball coach Mike Noel (13:01), the Central Section all-time wins leader and 8-time Valley champ. A 1985 Clovis West grad where he starred in football and baseball he’s the only Fresno State baseball player in history to go two College World Series (1988 and 1991) and played outfield alongside future 1st round MLB draft picks Tom Goodwin and Steve Hosey.Coach Noel goes in depth about the coaches in his life that made an impact, the 1985 13-0 Golden Eagles football team, his time at Fresno State the great softball players he’s coached and what family means to him.
In Ep. 8 Paul & Austin sit down with professional baseball players Trenton Kemp (Buchanan, 15th round Boston Red Sox) and Jake Gatewood (Clovis, 1st round, 41st overall Milwaukee Brewers) both 2014 high school graduates. We discuss their decorated high school careers including their 2014 Valley title game (won by Clovis), hear stories of what life is like in the minor leagues, and what current major league superstars wowed them the most. Let’s just say minor league baseball has no shortage of characters and not-so-glamorous ball parks.
In episode No. 7 Paul and Austin discuss the current state of high school sports in California - one of only four states that have yet to start high school sports - and the effects waiting has had on players, coaches and parents due to Covid. They dive into hard data collected by the Golden State HS Football Coaches Community and discuss what the Coalition of San Joaquin Valley Coaches have planned for sports start up in the Central Section. Paul also goes one-on-one with Clovis West girls basketball coach Craig Campbell (35:41) and what he thinks it will take to see basketball this year.
