What if the best investment decision is one where no human is involved?Brant Meyer, partner at Trac VC joins the show this week to talk about the firm's approach, where algorithms — not partners in puffer vests — make every single call. Over 115 investments to date with zero human investment decisions. An 8.5% loss ratio, orders of magnitude less than traditional VC, would seem to suggest they're on to something.George K. and George A. wanted to know, if machines make the decision, what exactly is Brant's job? But the more interesting conversation isn't about the wins. It's about what the model forces you to confront. We assume removing the human removes the bias — but Trac's algorithms are trained on data with its own biases.Then there's the psychological dimension. Brant makes the case that most resistance to algorithmic investing is emotional rather than rational. VCs resist algorithms because the discretionary call is the whole point. The juice, as he puts it, is the feeling of knowing. Strip that away and you're threatening an identity.Which raises the question George K. and George A. keep circling: how did venture capitalists acquire oracular status in the first place? The hit rate doesn't justify it. The pattern recognition, Brant argues, was never really theirs to claim.And yet , no founder wants to take money from a robot. The relationship still matters. Cette carte agrège les parcours des utilisateurs pour visualiser les zones les plus fréquentées. Mais ce jour-là, elle révèle bien plus que des itinéraires de joggeurs : les contours lumineux de bases militaires américaines secrètes, en Afghanistan, en Somalie ou encore en Syrie. Le choc est immédiat. Le Pentagone interdit les objets connectés en zone opérationnelle, et plusieurs pays, dont la France, adoptent des consignes similaires. Huit ans plus tard, le problème n'a pourtant pas disparu.Le 13 mars 2026, un officier de la Marine nationale court sur le pont du porte-avions Charles-de-Gaulle, montre connectée au poignet. Sept kilomètres en boucle, en pleine Méditerranée orientale. Rien d'exceptionnel… sauf que son activité est publiée automatiquement sur Strava, en accès public. Des journalistes parviennent alors à localiser le navire presque en temps réel, puis confirment sa position grâce à des images satellites prises à peine 90 minutes plus tard. Résultat : le porte-avions est identifié avec une précision de quelques kilomètres. La réaction des autorités est classique : rappel des consignes, promesse de sanctions, et insistance sur ce que l'armée appelle « l'hygiène numérique du combattant ». Autrement dit, l'ensemble des bonnes pratiques visant à éviter les fuites d'informations via les outils numériques.Ce n'est pas un cas isolé. En 2025 déjà, des membres d'équipage de sous-marins nucléaires avaient involontairement partagé des éléments liés à leurs patrouilles. Même scénario en 2024 avec des agents de sécurité de chefs d'État. Le problème est en partie technique. Des applications comme Strava sont conçues pour partager par défaut les activités sportives. La synchronisation avec le cloud, c'est-à-dire l'envoi automatique des données vers des serveurs en ligne, est activée dès le départ. À l'utilisateur de désactiver ces options, s'il y pense.Des solutions existent pourtant. Certaines armées testent des systèmes capables de bloquer toute connexion vers ces applications depuis des zones sensibles. Mais en France, on privilégie encore la sensibilisation. Un choix qui interroge, dans un contexte tendu. Plusieurs installations françaises ont récemment été ciblées, et un soldat a été tué en Irak par un drone. This classic Dental Hacks episode features a long-form interview with Dr. Rella Christensen of TRAC Research (formerly CRA). The discussion covers the history of independent product evaluation, the challenges of maintaining objectivity in dental research, and significant findings regarding restorative materials and caries management. The original interview had really poor sound quality but a little help from an Adobe AI filter really cleared it up. This interview was worth another listen, I think! Key Interview Highlights 1. The Origins and Ethics of TRAC Research History: The organization began in 1976 (founded by Gordon Christensen) with the goal of collecting subjective data from clinicians to create objective "Consumer Reports" style rankings for dentistry. Unbiased Stance: Dr. Christensen emphasized that TRAC is a non-profit foundation that accepts no funding from manufacturers. If a company refuses to provide a product for testing (often fearing a negative review), TRAC purchases it on the open market to ensure the data is captured. The "File Drawer" Effect: They discussed how negative research is rarely published in journals due to corporate influence in dental schools and editorial boards. TRAC aims to publish the truth, even when it is negative. 2. Restorative Materials: The Zirconia Revolution 10-Year Study Results: Dr. Christensen detailed a 10-year study comparing various ceramic systems. The Failure: Zirconia substructures (like Lava) survived well, but the veneering ceramics (porcelain layered on top) had massive failure rates (chipping and cracking). The Winner: The study pointed toward monolithic zirconia (specifically BruxZir) and lithium disilicate (e.max) as the most durable options. Translucency Warning: She noted that as manufacturers push for more translucent (anterior) zirconia, they often lower the flexural strength (from ~1200 MPa to ~600 MPa). She cautioned that the long-term fracture toughness of these newer, "prettier" zirconias was still unknown at the time 3. The "Bombshell": Enamel Remineralization & Caries The Study: TRAC performed an in-depth clinical study on 330 orthodontic patients (high risk for white spot lesions). They tested various protocols including MI Paste, Fluoride Varnish, Ozone, and Xylitol against a control group. The Result: None of the products performed statistically better than the control group (who did nothing special), with the exception of PreviDent 5000, which was only marginally better. The Conclusion: Dr. Christensen concluded that you cannot arrest caries or remineralize enamel if the patient's diet is not addressed. She stated that dental caries is "the only infectious disease we attempt to treat while allowing the cause [sugar] to continue."
