Welcome to Episode #52 of the No Conference for Old Men Podcast. This is our first offseason episode of season two. And just like last season, we'll discuss the big roster decisions made after the portal season and the pre-NBA Draft workouts were completed.  With revenue sharing, the #WideAwake campaign, and a top-two recruiting class, the Cougars will make another run at that elusive National Championship!   We begin this episode by commenting on the lone addition from the Portal (Kalifa Sakho). Then, we quickly provide perspectives on how the team fared from a roster-building perspective during the portal season. We finish by providing another "way too early" forecast of how we see the line-ups and rotations breaking down going into next season. - The video version of No Conference for Old Men is available on YouTube and GoCoogs.com. The audio is on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Megaphone, and SoundCloud. We're also available via the Republic of Football Podcast feed from the folks at Dave Campbell's Texas Football as their only basketball-centric offering. - Intro / Exit music:  Ground Zero provided by FreeBeats.io - Please follow us on https://gocoogs.com/old-men/ Learn more about your ad choices. The top story: Kevin Young's contract extension, locking in BYU's head coach “for the foreseeable future,” following his Sweet 16 debut season. The Phoenix Suns were reportedly interested in bringing him back to the NBA, but BYU acted swiftly. On the personal side, the Youngs are also expecting their fourth child this fall—a baby girl. The show also reacts to the House v. NCAA settlement, which paves the way for direct school payments to athletes starting this summer.Dave checks in live from the Deseret News High School Sports Awards, where he's emceeing and Travis Hansen is the keynote speaker. Meanwhile, BYU Football summer workouts are underway, and the crew highlights ESPN's Football Power Index projections: 8 wins expected, 29th national ranking, and a 12.6% chance to reach the College Football Playoff. They also preview key games this fall and break down the upcoming bowl season schedule—including a potential Big 12 appearance in the Alamo or Citrus Bowl.Special guest Andrew Gentry, a 6'7", 327-pound transfer from Michigan, joins the show to talk about his road to Provo. Gentry reflects on his time under Jim Harbaugh, why he ultimately chose BYU, and what it was like getting recruited while serving a mission in Argentina. From blocking in the national championship win over Washington to preparing for the BYU–Utah showdown on October 18, Gentry brings a championship pedigree to the Cougars' O-line.The show wraps with basketball updates, including BYU vs. Clemson at Madison Square Garden in the Jimmy V Classic and a rematch with Wisconsin in Salt Lake. Dick Vitale ranks BYU No. 7, and Egor Demin remains a possible NBA first-round pick. There's also news from Track & Field, Women's Volleyball, Soccer, and a spotlight on Jane Hedengren, who just broke a national mile record. Visit: https://www.ysguys.comIn this Memorial Day edition of Y's Guys, hosts Dave McCann and Blaine Fowler honor those who have served while breaking down critical updates in BYU sports. The episode opens with a recap of quarterback Jake Retzlaff's uncertain status following a civil lawsuit and what that means for BYU Football heading into fall. The crew explores who might step in—McCae Hillstead, Treyson Bourguet, or Bear Bachmeier—and how the offense can adapt, especially with key returners like LJ Martin, Chase Roberts, and a dominant O-line.The show also covers BYU's latest football commit, 6'4", 335-pound defensive tackle Alvin Puefua, who chose the Cougars over Miami, Utah, and Arizona. The team discusses ESPN's Top 30 quarterbacks, where Retzlaff still lands at No. 17, and what to watch for in BYU's early schedule: Portland State, Stanford, and East Carolina. They also dive into the new College Football Playoff format, which now rewards the Top 4 teams regardless of conference affiliation. On the basketball front, AJ Dybantsa is invited to USA Basketball's U19 training camp, and BYU's updated non-conference schedule includes exhibition games against Nebraska (Oct. 18) and North Carolina (late October at the Delta Center). The show also celebrates the Marriott Center's Top 10 national ranking for arena atmosphere and highlights Delaware at BYU (Nov. 11) as the first regular-season matchup. The show wraps with updates from spring sports: Men's Golf pushes for a top-8 finish at NCAA Championships; Softball's Ilova'a Brittingham is named a Freshman All-American; Track & Field heads to the NCAA West Prelims with both teams ranked in the top 7; and Baseball finishes a strong Big 12 tournament run. Dodgers and their development of starting pitchers. John Canzano, JohnCanzano.com, chats with Puck about whether or not he feels Pete Rose should get in.  John is a voter for the Hall of Fame.  Mediation is underway between the Pac-12 and the Mountain West.  How long will it last and what does it mean for UNLV in terms of joining the conference?  John discusses that the conference needs expansion to be resolved by July 1, 2025.   The White House is exploring setting up a commission to address college football. Does John think that's a good idea?   Puck and John discuss a follow up story that John did on a very impressive 17 year old umpire from Oregon. It's a must listen.  John finishes with that he doesn't think Blazer fans should close the door on Phil Knight buying the team. Puck then plays an edited version of this weeks Sports Pit with Steve Sandmeyer and Matt “Stretch” Johnson.  Puck, Sandy and Stretch talk about their favorite batting stance as kids and that led Sandy to tell a great all-time classic story about his time as a clubhouse attendant at the Kingdome and an encounter with George Brett.  They also laughed as Sandy talked about Reggie Jackson and what a jerk he was to his buddy who was also a “clubby” at the same time as Sandy.  Puck wraps up the show with, “Hey, What the Puck!?”  Angel Reese is not in the same stratosphere as Caitlyn Clark. (1:00) Puck on the M's win, Luis Castillo and Ben Williamson (10:30) Jim Duquette, MLB Network Radio (35:40) John Canzano (1:03:55) Sports Pit *Edited (1:24:07) “Hey, What the Puck!?”

Jim wants to buy an electric bike and that leads Puck down a rant on E-Bikes…they aren't bikes, they are motorcycles! Puck and Jim then welcome Chris Egan from KING 5 to the show and Egan reacts right away to Jim's story about going to Wrigley Field.  Like Jim, Egan had no clue what the Vedder Cup is, but is excited to see what the Mariners do in San Diego.  Egan is optimistic about the upcoming Seahawks season and thinks they have a great shot at going 12-5.  The boys chat about the Seahawks cracking down on Seahawks fans selling their tickets to opposing fans. Egan and Jim like the idea, but Puck has an issue with it and doesn't like what they are doing.  Egan went to Arizona last weekend to move his college son out and was horrified at what he saw in his apartment.  After Puck says goodbye to Egan and Jim, he welcomes in “The Scout”, an anonymous MLB scout who joins Puck every Friday to get the inside scoop on the Mariners.  This week they talk about the recent struggles of Ben Williamson, the red hot play of Cole Young in Tacoma, what does he look for right away in a prospect, Bryan Woo and his dominating fastball, he builds his perfect player with current MLB players and they wrap up discussing the upcoming MLB draft where the Mariners have the third overall selection and the The Scout details all the promising talent in the Northwest that can be drafted in the first round. Puck wraps up the show with, “Hey, What the Puck!?”  Puck reacts to the Seattle Seahawks and their new ticket policy. (1:00) Puck and Jim (32:08) Puck, Jim and Chris Egan (1:05:25) “The Scout” (1:29:53) “Hey, What the Puck!?”
