K-State's Big 12 title-game chances, Keyontae Johnson's start

Kansas State has an inside track in the race to be TCU's opponent in the Big 12 Championship Game. The Wildcats can clinch a spot this weekend. For that to happen, the Cats would have to win at West Virginia and Texas would need to lose at Kansas. Easier still: K-State would also be in with two straight wins, meaning at WVU and against. KU the following week. K-State's Big 12 title-game chances have see-sawed in recent weeks, but one common thread is the performance of backup quarterback WIll Howard. The Wildcats' offense runs better with Howard under center than it does with starter Adrian Martinez at the controls, and that's in spite of the fact Martinez is having a good season. Injuries have forced coach Chris Klieman to make some pivotal decisions about playing time. On today's episode of The Star's SportsBeat KC podcast, beat writer Kellis Robinett speculates about where the Cats will go from here. Also, we talk K-State basketball and the return to action of Keyontae Johnson. Once an SEC preseason player of the year at Florida, Johnson has missed most of the past two seasons while recovering from a heart ailment. He was named the Big 12's newcomer of the week and is off to a great start in 2022-23. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Baylor and Kansas State go toe-to-toe on the gridiron Saturday in a matchup that could decide who attends the Big 12 championship game in Arlington. The Wildcats are coming off of a tough home loss to Texas, and the Bears are riding high after winning three straight in Big 12 play. This game pits two squads with a lot of talent into a corner, and only one can make it out and into the next round of the conference title race As for the game, Deuce Vaughn and Adrian Martinez are going to be problems for Baylor. The running game that Kansas State presents is fierce, and the Bears' run defense has to put on one of its better performances. If the Bears can do that while running the ball effectively themselves, this one will be all Baylor. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Three games remain in the Big 12 regular season and Kansas State and Kansas remain in the conference championship race. The Wildcats figured to be here, but it's an epic season from the Jayhawks. Beat writers Kellis Robinett and Gary Bedore break down the teams they cover on today's SportsBeat KC. For K-State, the plot thickens at quarterback. In last weekend's loss to Texas, Coach Chris Klieman returned to Adrian Martinez, who had been out with an injury. In stepped Will Howard and looked good. How will Kansas State handle the position going forward? Also, the Wildcats opened the basketball season with three able bodies on the bench, ticketed for redshirt seasons. We have the explanation. KU opened defense of its NCAA title season with a solid offensive performance that was not witnessed by Bill Self, who was serving the first of his school-imposed four-game suspension. Where was Self's game-day hangout? The Jayhawks' football team put together an impressive performance in defeated Oklahoma State last weekend to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2008. Victory Monday never gets old right? Your Texas Longhorns had not won a football game since October 15th ( I know) but that changed when they beat Adrian Martinez and Deuce Vaughn on the road in Manhattan, Kansas beating the Kansas State Wildcats 34-27 on Saturday. Elite performances from elite players like Bijan Robinson, Roschon Johnson, and Xavier Worthy helped ensure the Longhorns got their first true road win since 2021. Steve Sarkisian allowed his young quarterback in Quinn Ewers to settle in the offense and pick his spots, rather than being the savior. When there were opportunities for Quinn to make plays, he definitely did that and that is a big reason they left Kansas with a win. With that win, Texas now is back in the driver's seat with the destination hopefully being the Big 12 championship. Texas now has three games left against the TCU Horned Frogs, Kansas Jayhawks and Baylor Bears. If Texas wins all three of those games, they will be in the Big 12 championship on December 3rd. Pressure is a privilege, and now you have the privilege of welcoming a team into DKR on Saturday that is undefeated and has college football playoff aspirations. If Texas wants to get back into the upper echelon of college football, these are the games we have to win. Buckle up. This season is just getting started. Coming off of the bye week, the Texas Longhorns are facing what feels like a make-or-break moment for this season. Heading out on the road to take on the Kansas State Wildcats, their chances to make the Big 12 title game are somehow still alive, but they likely would have to win all of their remaining games to do so. To win them all, you have to win the first one, and so comes the challenge of a resurgent Kansas State program, coming off of a 48-0 dismantling of the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Led by Deuce Vaughn, the other unanimous preseason All-Conference running back, the Wildcats' offense eats up the ground game, even with quarterback Adrian Martinez injured. Defensively, Kansas State is stout wherever they go, but especially in Manhattan, where they're allowing just 12 points per game. Texas has had no trouble scoring early in contests but has fallen back into the predictable pattern of second-half struggles leading to losses. Can Sark and Co. overcome their tendency to struggle late or will Texas come away from Manhattan with its season goals all but lost? Connect with the show on Twitter and Facebook.  @Texas Homer  joins the show to talk about everything we need to know about what has been good and bad for this Texas Longhorns football team schematically. On the offensive and defensive sides, there has been some good and some bad this season, which has led to a 5-3 record for Texas through 8 games. On the offensive side, what has worked in the passing game between Hudson Card and Quinn Ewers thus far this season? What are the concepts that have allowed playmakers like Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington to make plays in the passing game this year? In the run game, what schemes have allowed Bijan Robinson and Keilan Robinson to be amongst the best in the country in terms of runningbacks? How have the versatile tight ends in Jahleel Billingsley and Ja'Tavion Sanders affected this offense? On the defensive side, this is a team that has vastly improved from 2021. What schematically has worked for the Longhorns on that side of the ball in 2022 that has allowed playmakers like Keondre Coburn, Demarvion Overshown, Jaylan Ford and Ryan Watts to shine this season? On top of that, the Texas Longhorns have a tough matchup against the Kansas State Wildcats tomorrow. On offense, how can Quinn Ewers and Sark attack them to get a tough win on the road? On defense, how can Pete K and Gary Patterson stop Deuce Vaughn and Adrian Martinez or Will Howard? Texas needs this win in the worst way. Let's hope they can get it. On today's SportsBeat KC, beat writer Kellis Robinett breaks down Kansas State in the Big 12 race and shares his thoughts with what the Wildcats should do at quarterback: Stay with backup Will Howard, who was carried off the field after a four-touchdown performance against the Cowboys, or return to starter Adrian Martinez. After a break, Robinett and host Blair Kerkhoff discuss the meaning of the Big 12's new television agreement with ESPN and Fox Sports. The six-year deal kicks in for the 2025-26 season and will pay the conference $380 million per year. Kansas State has known what it's like to have a meaningful football season well in autumn, and after last weekend's victory at Oklahoma, the Wildcats figure to be part of the Big 12 championship race. It's been different at Kansas, which time of year has been about counting down the days until the first basketball game. Not this year. KU is off to a 4-0 start and coming off a victory played before a packed stadium in Lawerence. On today's SportsBeat KC, bear writers Kellis Robinett and Gary Bedore discuss the Wildcats and Jayhawks. K-State quarterback Adrian Martinez was remarkable against the Sooners, accounting for more than 400 yards and five touchdowns. KU quarterback Jalon Daniels has been great all season and has the Jayhawks thinking of bowls, polls and other rewards that had been far beyond their reach for more than a decade. Please go subscribe and like their podcast and leave your hot takes about this game in the reviews. 1. Offense vs Maryland starts at 1:00 There was some First Actual Game clunkiness but the boxscore looks fine! Was that actually the fastest touchdown in Michigan football history? JJ missing some deep shots isn't concerning, more concerning is him breaking the pocket to run around and then run around some more and then run around some more. There was also some poor decision making, he looked like a second year quarterback. So Blake Corum is pretty good. Incredible awareness and elusiveness. Was also able to grind out short yardage which was the only part of his game that was missing. Brian officially calls him the best running back he's ever seen at Michigan. Pass protection was pretty good. Schoonmaker's run blocking has been fantastic and offers NFL-level complexity to the run game. Tight end depth is good enough that they might not actually miss Erick All too much moving forward. Can't run a trick play based off of a play you didn't run. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]   2. Defense vs Maryland starts at 36:50 Very little pass rush which is concerning. Tagovailoa had all day to pass. Interestingly when Maryland brought in their backup the pass rush started to work. A lof of things that Seth said wouldn't translate from Colorado State have not translated into this game. Some of the blitzes weren't weird enough. Linebackers were not shooting the gaps, Nikhai-Hill Green was greatly missed. The secondary looked great, though! Mike Sainristil has absolutely crushed all expectations this season. Shout out to RJ Moten for batting down the ball on his own to make the interception. Maryland will probably end up being one of the best offenses Michigan plays so in hindsight this was a pretty solid performance as a whole. There were some flagrantly missed holding calls.  3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 1:05:24 Takes hotter than Adrian Martinez any time he plays Oklahoma. Talking about going for it on 4th down - do you call a timeout? Seeing Miami run plays that didn't work for Michigan last year was... interesting. Can't punt around mid-field if you're just running it down their throat, especially when Blake Corum is running for 8 yards per carry. Special teams should've kept kicking it to Tai Felton instead of through the endzone... just in case.  4. Around the Big Ten With Jamie Mac starts at 1:37:05 Forty five minutes of Minnesota vs Michigan State wooo! (Not actually, sorry). This domination is even worse than the final score. Michigan State has two division II transfers in their secondary. Kenneth Walker deserved two Heismans for what he did with this team last year. Minnesota is suddenly the favorite to win the West. Penn State played Central Michigan pretty even for most of the game which is fairly alarming for the Nittany Lions. Sean Clifford was 1-for-11 on "shots downfield". How does... Iowa score on Michigan? Their turnovers don't seem random. Iowa has had 40 drives start in their own territory, 15 of them have entered opposing teams' territory, and only six of those have resulted in points. 1-11 Northwestern whose only win is Nebraska and 1-11 Nebraska with zero power-five wins is on the table! Florida Atlantic outgains Purdue by 80 yards but Purdue wins, though they lose their starting QB. They fumbled the kneel down! Welp, Ohio State looked good, but Wisconsin didn't even look like they were trying. This was just every other Ohio State vs Wisconsin Big Ten Championship Game.  MUSIC: Too Close for Comfort Theme Song "Get On This"--Ugly Duckling Blossom Theme Song “Across 110th Street”

One team shot themselves in the foot, and one didn't. Parker brings up KState OC Collin Klein. The former Wildcat QB beat OU in 2012. No opening take. The guys immediately address whether they think Brent Venables will have OU ready to play by kickoff Saturday night (1:30)? Brent Venables said the Nebraska game wasn't bigger to him than other games, which leads to Lee ranting about how Texas has been able to play OU close and beat them over the last decade. Grant doesn't buy it though (7:10). Will it be easier to predict what kind of OU team we will see week to week under Brent Venables (12:20)? We hope this is the most nuanced, intelligent discussion regarding the end of football Bedlam that you'll hear (14:40). What do we make of Adrian Martinez's slow start so far at K-State (30:45)? Deuce Vaughn's still K-State's best player, but he did not do a whole lot against Tulane (36:45). Brent Venables and OU's defense gave up a healthy amount of points to K-State from 1999-2011 (41:00). Malik Knowles and Phillip Brooks are still on the K-State roster, but zero wide receivers are over 100 yards receiving (43:35). K-State's defense is really good. Could it end up being the best defense OU sees during the regular season (44:55)? OU will have to run the ball effectively through K-State's 3-3-5 look. What will Jeff Lebby's game plan look like (51:45)? Lee struggles to explain why he thinks OU -12.5 has a lot of value. Does it make sense in the end? You decide (56:10). Dillon Gabriel has not played well against high level defenses in his career. Will that trend continue Saturday (1:03:15)? Over to the Big 12. West Virginia may be the worst team in the conference. KU is favored to beat Duke. We don't know anything about TCU yet. Grant like Tech to beat Texas outright (1:04:30). The guys are each 10-5 so far this year on their weekly picks. Our 5 games this week are Clemson-Wake Forest/Baylor-Iowa State/Washington St.-Oregon/Arkansas-Texas A&M/USC-Oregon State (1:09:00). | Like the show on Facebook: @westofeverest | Follow Grant on Twitter: @GrantBenson25 | Follow Lee on Twitter: @LeeBensonNews9

Watching Joe Biden sit down with 60 Minutes for an interview put me on he edge of my seat as I felt he was going to say something so stupid it would lead to war.  He absolutely committed our military to a war in Taiwan if the Chinese advance.  This man is frightening.    Florida Governor Ron DeSantis riled up a sold out conference center in Olathe while stumping for Kansas candidate for governor Derek Schmidt.  Conservatives love what this governor has done for his state.    Kansas State's promising season crashed into a wall Saturday as quarterback Adrian Martinez lost his 30th game in college.  30!  Question answered... he's not a one year solution, it's time to move on.    Jalon Daniels is just the opposite for KU as the Hawks fell behind 14-0 before Daniels went off for 5 touchdowns.  KU looks like a bowl team.   We break down Mizzou's win over Abilene Christian and Tyreek Hill has an epic day for the Dolphins.
