On a Tuesday in late October, 2022, Jared Goff, a quarterback for the Detroit Lions, was summoned to a meeting in the office of his coach Dan Campbell. The summons gave Jared Goff a pit in his stomach. He figured he was going to be benched or released—fired. Some version of bad news felt inevitable. Goff had begun his career with the Los Angeles Rams, who had traded him to the Detroit Lions for the Lions' former quarterback, Matthew Stafford. In his first year, Stafford led the Rams to a Super Bowl victory. But Goff's first year for the Lions was a disaster. The team went 3-13-1. His second season started out just as bad: one win, six losses, including an ugly loss that Sunday in which Goff played terribly. Hence the summons to the coach's office. When he got to the coach's office, to Goff's surprise, Coach Campbell did not have bad news. He had a good question. Jared, you are a much better player than the way you have been playing. What do you think is going on? What do you think you might do differently to play better? What tweak might we think about? To which Jared Goff responded: I've been trying to do too much. I need to let go of all my anxiety and just do my best one play at a time. To which Campbell responded: Jared, that's all I've wanted you to do this whole time. The next game, Jared Goff played dramatically better. The team still lost, but his play improved appreciably. And the game after that, the Lions won, and they have been winning ever since. This year the Lions are tied for the best record in the league. Goff's play has been spectacular. I bring up this story not to talk about football but to talk about how to respond to people who are seriously struggling. Jared Goff assumed that he was going to be benched or released. But Dan Campbell did not give up on him. How do we not give up on people or places that we love that are going through a hard time?

Dr Jim & Rafael are back! The band is back. Dr. Jim & Rafael are back together agin exploring healing on a global level. Rafael shares his thoughtful impressions of Georgia (not the peach state, but the country) where he did a recent training on Compassion, Addiction, and Trauma. Rafael also has gone to where the action is - - doing (virtual) trainings for professionals in the Ukraine and Russia. As almost everyone knows the Ukraine and Russia are currently the epicenter of war and trauma. Rafael plans to sojourn to that part of the world soon to impart his wisdom, to teach professionals in this war torn region his compassionate approach to healing trauma. In applying his craft across geopolitical lines, Rafael has had to be the Magellan of intra-psychic and inter-psychic terrain. In so doing, he has noticed the oneness we all share, particularly when it comes to trauma and how to heal it. As healers we are a formulary of medicine and wisdom. The elixir combines compassion, wisdom, humility, love, kindness, resiliency, and the thoughtful application of Gestalt therapy. In this interview Dr. Jim also discusses his book project, which is still stalled out. He runs some of the themes by Rafael and feels inspired again to write. Dr. Jim also finds inspiration in the Detroit Lions who had their first winning season since 2017 under their extraordinary coach, Dan Campbell. Dr. Jim wants to channel his internal Coach Campbell to finish his book. WCMI networking group A networking group for mindfulness-focused clinicians dedicated to learning together & collaborating for more information click here

This week on Inside the Headset, we are featuring Campbell University Head Coach, Mike Minter. Coach Minter speaks on transitioning Campbell from a non-scholarship to scholarship program, details the commonalities of a great team that he's found across various levels of football, and shares the impact that former coaches have had on his coaching career. Mike Minter, a former Carolina Panthers standout and Nebraska Football Hall of Famer, is entering his 10th season as head football coach at Campbell University in 2022. Over the last nine seasons, the camels has reset nearly every record in the school's books. Camels have been named first or second team all-conference 46 times, while 37 have been tabbed honorable mention all-league. Minter led the Camels to three consecutive winning seasons from 2017-19, a modern era program first (since 2008). During the team's historic six game winning streak in 2019, Campbell received top-25 votes for five straight weeks, another program first. Minter, a member of two national championship teams at Nebraska and the Panthers' 2003 Super Bowl squad, joined the Fighting Camel program after serving as assistant coach at Liberty University in 2012 and Johnson C. Smith University in 2011. He also brought head coaching experience from First Assembly Christian School in Concord, where he guided his teams to 33 victories and two state titles in three seasons. During his 10-year NFL career, Minter earned a starting safety role six games into his rookie year in 1997, and held that position until he retired after the 2006 season. A second-round draft choice, he helped lead the Panthers to three playoff trips, the 2003 NFC Championship and a berth in Super Bowl XXXVII. The Roar lose on yet another last second, 50+ yard field goal, for the second week in a row, becoming the only team to undergo such humiliation and gut punch madness. We are ... nonplussed? After literally a lifetime of Lions sucktitude, it's hard to get too worked up about one more loss, no matter how bizarre. Deano admires Coach Campbell's manly tears during the post-game presser and his ability to get this group of low-talent rejects to play really hard. We fantasize about how cool it would be if the Roar keep losing on ever-longer, game-ending field goals, until by season's end opposing kickers are lining up at the back of their own end zone. Impossible Lomas floats the theory that the Fords were involved in the assassination of JFK, given that the Ford Family bought the Lions in 1963 on the exact same day that JFK got his head blow off. How else to explain the curse that's infected this franchise ever since? Uncle Ted revels in Matt Staff's bounce-back victory over the Seahawks, and we unanimously agree that getting traded to the Rams was the best thing to happen to $taff since getting drafted by the Lions (trumping even his wife's surgery to remove a brain tumor). Deano commits to laying down more lucre, betting against the Roar in next week's tilt against the not-so-mighty Bengals. Impossible mourns the season-ending injury to Quintez Cephus, the Roar's best receiver, who was poised to have a breakout year. We one again fuck up the concluding roar, requiring a second take to deliver a surprisingly gentle and heartfelt three-part RAA salute.
