"Sound allows the listener to experience a story. Holistically. So you hear a sound and information about a subject that words can only allude to. Sounds can give you another quality of impression." These are the words of Jim Metzner, who is a longtime expert in telling stories with sound. His hallmark is the distinctive use of ambient sound. Beside his productions for National Geographic or NASA Jim Metzner has been producing a short format science program since 1988 with more than 6,000 episodes. He acoustically deals with environmental issues all over the world. More than 250 public and commercial broadcast outlets worldwide currently air “Pulse of the Planet”. More than one million listeners per month hear each episode.

Smartphones are a great tool for recording and editing videos, photos and audio. They are permanently connected with the Internet, i.e. with the world. But in newsrooms mobile journalists are still hard to find. A photo here, a video clip there - however, mobile journalists are by no means a fixed part of editorial offices. Not here in Austria and not in other countries. I discussed this contradiction with Glen Mulcahy from Ireland, a professional who has already trained hundreds of journalists to become mobile journalists.
