The event will take place on the 12th of February 7pm at the Malone Lodge.  Kitson Praises Paras in BallymurphyI recently came across the autobiography of British General Sir Frank Kitson which was published last year shortly after his death. It is titled ‘Intelligent Warfare' an oxymoron in any language. In truth it is an account of British military failures through several colonial wars in which Kitson fought, including in Ireland. It is also a reflection of Kitson's enormous personal ego.Kitson came to prominence within the British military hierarchy in the 1950s during its efforts to crush the independence rebellion in Kenya. He established counter-gangs that tortured and killed Kenyan civilians. The groups were made up of British soldiers, including Kitson on occasion, and former members of those fighting against British rule. Tens of thousands of Kenyans ended up in over 150 detention camps where they were brutalized. An estimated 30,000 Kenyans were killed; one and a half million were interned; torture was commonplace and 1090 were hanged.While Kitson boasts of his role in the counter-gangs he ignores the human rights violations that underpinned British strategy in that African country.In 1970 he took command of the 39th Brigade – which covered Belfast and surrounding region. Alan Jackson didn't just withdraw from the Nick Reiner case. He held a press conference on the courthouse steps and told reporters exactly what he believes: "Pursuant to the laws of California, Nick Reiner is NOT guilty of murder. Print that."That's not how attorneys typically exit a case. That's a closing argument delivered before the trial even starts. Jackson spent three weeks investigating — every waking hour, ten sealed subpoenas, a defense strategy clearly taking shape. Then he told the court he was legally and ethically prohibited from explaining why he had to leave. The circumstances, he said, were "beyond Nick's control."Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene now represents Nick. She learned about the transition the night before. She had thirty seconds to introduce herself before the hearing began. She told reporters she'd never communicated with the Reiner family and didn't believe they knew Jackson was stepping aside.Rob and Michele Reiner poured resources into their son for seventeen years. Eighteen rehab programs. Seventy thousand a month in treatment costs. Ten thousand a month in allowance. A guest house on the family property. Empire of Print: Evangelical Power in an Age of Mass Media (Oxford UP, 2025) offers a fresh account of evangelical power by uncovering how the American Tract Society (ATS) leveraged print media to spread its message across an expanding nation. One of the era's largest media corporations and a pillar of the benevolent empire, the ATS circulated some 5.6 billion printed pages between its founding in 1825 and the eve of the Civil War. It wasn't just the volume of materials that mattered—it was the sophisticated media infrastructure that evangelicals developed for their message to reach readers, coast to coast. Media infrastructure refers to the material assemblages that work below the surface of media content, including the format of publications, the avenues of their movement, and the circumstances surrounding their reading. As a non-coercive yet effective form of power, infrastructure shaped how, when, and why readers engaged with evangelical texts. While showing how the ATS became a formidable force in American society during the nineteenth century, Empire of Print opens larger questions about the entanglements among people, things, texts, and institutions, the dynamics of power in a media-saturated world, and the salience of race, class, and region in the distribution and reception of media. Sonia Hazard is an assistant professor in the Department of Religion at Florida State University. Today we're breaking down everything you need to know about what comes next in the Nick Reiner case.Alan Jackson quit as Nick's attorney this morning — but not before delivering a statement that sounded more like a closing argument than a goodbye: "Nick Reiner is NOT guilty of murder under California law. Print that." Three weeks of investigation. Ten sealed subpoenas. And now he's gone.Here's what that statement actually means. California's insanity defense works in two phases. First, the jury decides guilt based on the evidence. Then — if guilty — a second trial determines whether the defendant was legally insane at the time of the crime. That's where Jackson's words apply. Under the M'Naghten Rule, the defense must prove Nick couldn't understand what he was doing or couldn't tell right from wrong at the exact moment of the killings. Less than one percent of defendants plead insanity. Only about a quarter succeed.Nick is now represented by Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene, who met him for approximately thirty seconds before the hearing. But the LA County Public Defender's Office has one of the best capital case records in the country — between 2006 and 2015, only one of their clients was sentenced to death out of thirty appeals.Here's what most people miss: even if the insanity defense works, Nick doesn't walk free.
