This episode is brought to you by: 51 Lemons – creating financial freedom for independent artists. Do you really need to record and release a series of albums to ‘make it’? For now, many mainstream artists still choose to record and release albums - you might not have to! On this episode, the Nashville Unsigned team takes on the question that has become increasingly important, and often unasked by independent artists. In the age of music streaming, ADD culture, and market saturation; many artists, including many mainstream artists have changed their tune on releasing their tunes in the form of singles. While albums may have been the industry standard release strategy for what seems like forever, times have changed. The process of writing, recording, mixing, mastering, marketing and then finally releasing an album is an expensive and time consuming process, and may benefit certain artists. For example, you may choose to record and release a full album to showcase a certain idea over a series of songs, or capture a moment in time. But for many independent artists on a budget, recording and releasing singles provides an opportunity to grow awareness, engage with your audience and make a little money in the process! Drop your questions and comments below and let us know what you think! What works for you? Did you miss the last episode of the Nashville Unsigned Podcast? WTF is an EPK you ask? Your electronic press kit is a vital piece of marketing and branding material you use to book shows, get interviews, and overall promote your music. In this episode of the Nashville Unsigned Podcast, we cover the vitals of what to place in your EPK and how it benefits your music career. First, we suggest thinking long and hard about your brand. Are you a hard-kicking heavy metal heart-throb? Are you a cognitive country music singer and songwriter? Like, what’s your vibe, man? When you know exactly who you are, you have to make palpable to everyone else. This is where an EPK comes in. Grab some headshots that express your creative flair, collect some samples of your music, and write yourself a little bio. It is important that all of these things are cohesive to your image. As a result, venues, show-promoters, magazines, or whoever you’re trying to impress will get a clear image of who you are. Above all, stay true to that image. It’s easier to be real than fake a façade. So, WTF is an EPK? It's your branded musical resume. Think about it as a resume. People who are booking shows and festivals need to find a certain style that vibes with their event. Do you think your Americana pop sound is going to fit in at a punk rock festival? Probably not. Therefore, cater your image to the correct demographic. It’s true that uniqueness is vital, but you at least have to be genre-adjacent. In other words, create something true to yourself, but keep in mind where you sound would fit in. When this is understood, you’ll be finding much more success in landing gigs in the right places. Networking Online is new frontier for many of us. Sure, we’ve all been using social media for well over a decade, but we want to flesh out what exactly digital networking is. In the age of social media, for better or worse, much of our interactions with each other happen online. This has changed the dynamics of how we socialize, market and even spend our money. The truth is, connections are made digitally every day, every second and every hour. Thing is, there are so many options in the social media world for you to expand your reach, including niche platforms for music like Soundcloud, Bandcamp and Nashville Unsigned. In fact, you can bet this episode will appear on several of these platforms. Networking Online is promotion. At the very least, your digital network is a starting point. First of all, it connects you with potential fans (which is kind of a big deal). Facebook is notoriously great for finding and interacting with fan bases, but it would greatly benefit you to look outside of the obvious. Secondly, you can find live events for more face-to-face networking with a click of a button. Facebook makes it ridiculously easy to find such events. Come to think of it, so does our Nashville Unsigned event calendar. To sum this episode up, it’s important to diversify your marketing plan online. It’s just as important to diversify the platforms you interact on. Finally, consistency is vital to success. If you don’t interact with your fans, how are they going to know you love them right back? If you want to learn more about networking in general, specifically in person, check out our previous episode HERE. As always, let us know your opinion on what makes good networking happen. On top of that, let us know what other episodes you would like Nashville Unsigned to produce. What topics of conversation are important to you? Nashville Unsigned is coming in hot for the next two weeks on Networking skills. We begin with Networking Secrets: Part 1. In this episode, we discuss the ins and outs of networking. It can seem daunting, especially if this whole make-it-on-my-own thing is new to you. However, it’s really a simpler matter. Are you supposed to sport-coat up and hunt down people to spark your career? It’s like, am I supposed to be some kind of salesperson? The answer is hell no. Unless that’s your bag—you do you. The point is, you don’t have to be anything more than genuine. Even when large networking events are held, it boils down to one-on-one interaction with other human beings. That’s not so bad, right? It’s kind of like starting a new school when you were a kid: you just have to vibe with people to find new friends. The business side of things honestly comes secondary. You have to establish trust first, and that could take time. The Real Networking Secrets: We’ve found that throughout every networking event we’ve thrown, it always came down to simply having fun. This is the fuel behind our brand of community at Nashville Unsigned. Everyone who dares to embark in this kind of career needs to be surrounded by others with the same fire. Your network is what you make of it, and there is no shortage of impressive, hard-working people in Nashville. Thing is, networking happens with every personal interaction. So, check your local groups and Nashville Unsigned’s event calendar for some upcoming shows and mingle. This industry is built on a night life, so this is the kind of work that’s actually fun. How do I promote my shows? This is a subject that matters a great deal to Nashville artists. We live in town centered around live music, so there’s literally something happening every night. Hell, even if it’s just a house show, we have a constant live music scene here. There are just way too many musicians that live in this city who are behind in their show promotions game. That’s why this episode is all about getting the word out for your live shows. Let your potential fans know where you’re going to be! How do I promote my shows? And why is it important in my early career? There are several reasons live shows help your overall career. Even if you consider yourself more of a “studio musician”, a few live performances can showcase your talent in a city full of music industry professionals. It’s a key way to build your fan base and address the music community at large. First of all, it’s a major money source early on in your music career. Second, it’s an effective marketing tool that complements your online presence. It’s like a double win. If nothing else, it’s the first piece of money that is quickly attainable. Maybe you have to squeeze in a few freebies to get the word out, but your goal is to get some good old fashion cash for your time. As always, let us know your opinion on what makes a successfully-promoted show. We look forward to hearing from the community at large with such hurdles to overcome as an independent artist. Who even is Nashville Unsigned? It's ok, we've heard this question a few times. Well, more like several times. It's a question that's natural when you're running around throwing shows, publishing articles and curating music. And holy crap, has it changed over the years. Therefore, we've created a special episode of the the Nashville Unsigned Podcast to answer that question as thoroughly as possible. We've come together to talk about the community at large. This episode is about telling stories of where we come from, and where we're going with Nashville Unsigned. We just want to figure out this whole indie music thing. So who even is Nashville Unsigned? Seriously. Spoiler alert, I'm going to sum up what we're about in one word: Community. Wait, wait, don't let me lose you yet. It's actually an incredibly cool thing for the indie music scene in Nashville. As a digital magazine, we've created a platform that communicates with the community (like what i did there?). From here, we connect with musicians, businesses and fans alike to make the idea of independent music feasible. That means actually paying the bills doing what you love. Or, at the very least, getting the most financially out of a passion project you've put time and energy into. A win's a win, am I right? With a combined experience in promotions, branding, web development, video production, and writing, we've made it our mission to chase this. We are at the forefront of music discovery, marketing strategy and technology, in touch with a massive community of talented entrepreneurs. Therefore, why not connect with one another? Let's hang out, listen to good music, and plug in to the scene. Our thinking is, the tide rises all ships. So, ladies and gentlemen, let's make some waves. You can catch our last season here. We cover topics ranging from net neutrality to marketing concepts. Finally, feel free to create a profile or engage with us on Facebook. We want to hear from you! In this episode of the Nashville Unsigned Podcast, we discuss how to make money as an artist. Pretty straight forward, right? The funny thing is, it’s much more convoluted than most people might think. We no longer live in a world of simply selling music, so thinking outside the box can take your music career to the level you want to be on. Though these methods may or may not blast your career to superstardom, it’s important to generate some sort of income off all this effort. So, let's really talk about how to make money as an artist. The idea is to diversify your income streams. You know, diversify that portfolio! If you can quit a crappy part-time job and survive off nothing but your music career, then you, my friend, are winning. Think about it. What if all that energy, focus and stress was saved for one purpose—your purpose? These small victories can save your passion for the project and propel your career forward. Also, they help to hone your focus to one thing. First of all, consider your impact on the community around you. Would your image be valuable to a local or nationwide brand? Endorsements can be pure magic, whether they put money in your pocket or further your show promotions. Considering the business side of your career will keep it afloat for much longer. It’s all about staying ahead of the curve as best as possible. So, let us know your thoughts on our ideas. It’s fun to consider all the possibilities. We like to think about it as another outlet to place your creativity. Congratulations, you’ve joined the entrepreneur club of Music City! Do I need a manager for my music career? What are the pros and cons in hiring a manager? What if I can’t afford to pay a manager yet? These are all questions we hear often, especially from musicians who are new to the business. In short, the answer depends on where you’re at on your journey. If you’re just getting your feet wet in your music career, management can help organize your workflow. You may need help with the business side of your career, or just need help juggling your projects. Hell, some people skip management altogether. Wherever you fall on this paradigm, it’s important to consider your options. First, check your immediate network for friends with business sense. A manager’s primary responsibilities revolve around logistics, booking and even public relations. Therefore, it’s important that your manager has a grasp of these things. Not to mention, they should believe in you. The most important quality of all is work ethic, as experience and know-how will come in time. If you’re further along in your career and need experience behind you, there are many resources offered in the episode to find your perfect match. This is especially true if you live in Nashville. Between our ever-growing Unsigned Community and the music industry at large, there is no shortage of talent in this town. At this level, managers can make a tremendous difference on the business side of your project. For more advice in the music industry, follow the Nashville Unsigned Podcast.
