Talking Ears

We assembled the largest gathering of Teleaudiology experts on the planet (world record eligible?) as part of the NHCA 2025 conference "Updates in Music Audiology" workshop. This episode is that panel discussion, lightly edited for the audio-only format. Of course, Teleaudiology is not a new topic for Talking Ears listeners, as we have had all the panelists as guests in the past, and discussed Tuned and MusiCares in various episodes including a panel video. This episode serves as an update to the rapidly changing landscape of the field of virtual care for musicians, as well as a deep dive into the online hearing screener development and accessibility benefits of the delivery model. The panelists were Heather Malyuk (Tuned, Soundcheck Audiology), Laura Sinnott (Sound Culture), Sharron Switzer (Sensaphonics), and Juan Vasquez (Talking Ears, Earmark). Frank Wartinger moderated the panel discussion. Note: these conference lecture recordings are not eligible for CEUs. If you want the full educational experience, we invite you to seek out the National Hearing Conservation Association and our annual conferences.

In this episode, we flip the table and Juan interviews Frank about an article he co-authored for Seminars in Hearing Volume 45, Number 3 (2025). First, a thank you to guest series editor Marc Fagelson, PhD, for the invitation to write this article for Seminars in Hearing. Marc, Frank, and Juan have been collaborating for the last year on an exciting Music Audiology project with the American Tinnitus Association (ATA) and Texas Roadhouse to bring hearing and tinnitus awareness and care to musicians and crew music festivals. This work has been described in detail in the ATA's Tinnitus Today Winter 2024 publication and we discussed it in detail on a panel episode of Talking Ears. Second, this article would not have happened without the contributions and insights from these amazing collaborators: Nancy Gould, M.Ed - Nancy is the Tinnitus Specialist with Tuned Care, and practices on telehealth and in North Carolina. She specializes in mindfulness stress reduction as well as tinnitus retraining. We first connected when she made dramatic differences in the care of many of my patients seen on the Tuned platform through the MusiCares program, so I knew she would have great insights into this article. Melissa Rogel, LMFT - Melissa is a licensed individual and relationship therapist, runs the practice Cooperative Path in the Philadelphia area, and is the drummer of Philly-based indie rock band The Diaphone. She clearly understands the musicians' perspective and brought to light the psychological concepts. Full disclosure: Frank has been playing keyboards and bass with The Diaphone since 2022, so we're bandmates. Thus the article: A Field Guide to Musicians' Tinnitus outlines the differences in psychological presentation and care approaches when working with musicians who have significant tinnitus reactions, then follows a case that Nancy and Frank shared via teleaudiology.  Music heard in this episode was written and recorded by Juan Vasquez and produced by Frank Wartinger.

Welcome to the third installment of the Updates in Music Audiology workshop recap from the NHCA 2025 conference. This week we will help Sensaphonics celebrate their 40 year anniversary by featuring the voices of founder Michael Santucci and hearing clinic director Shannon Switzer. Together, they shared a brief history of in ear monitors, common fit and use issues, and recommendations for their safe and effective use. Their presentations have been edited slightly for the audio-only format.  Michael Santucci is a Doctor of Audiology and president of Sensaphonics, Inc., Chicago, IL. In 1985 he founded Sensaphonics which designs, develops and manufactures custom in‐ear products for the music industry as well as a variety of other hearing conservation applications. For over 40 years he has provided Audiological consultation and customized hearing protection strategies to both Chicago area musicians and many of today's most prolific music performers from all genres of music. Today, Dr. Santucci continues his hearing conservation efforts, spearheading the development of innovative new products and technologies that have 3 patents for the 3DME IEM system and the dB Check Pro sound level analyzer. Both products are NAMM tech award finalists. Dr. Santucci is the Chair of the Music Induced Hearing Loss Task Force for the National Hearing Conservation Association. Dr. Santucci is also a member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES), where he is Chair of the Technical Committee on Hearing and Hearing Loss Prevention. In 2015 through this year, Dr. Santucci was invited by the World Health Organization to participate as an expert consultant as part of the WHO's Listen Safe Initiative in Geneva SZ and is a core member and coordinator for MLS. Sensaphonics is the first winner of the Safe in Sound award presented by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the NHCA for achievements in technology, was the first winner of the prestigious Larry Mauldin award for pioneering new ideas for hearing loss prevention and was twice presented the Governor's Award and once presented a Fellowship Award from the Audio Engineering Association and has been awarded Honors of the Academy with the 2023 Samuel Lybarger award from the American Academy of Audiology. Shannon Switzer, Au.D. is the Director of the Sensaphonics Musicians' Hearing Clinic in Chicago and is a featured audiologist in the MusiCares x Tuned teleaudiology partnership. As a lifelong clarinetist herself, she became fascinated with hearing conservation for musicians while earning her Doctorate of Audiology at Northwestern University. She primarily provides direct patient care to over 1000 music industry professionals annually through a variety of channels; the Sensaphonics clinic, mobile visits at music venues in Chicago, onsite clinical residencies with orchestras around the country, and teleaudiology visits with musicians around the world. Dr. Switzer is passionate about promoting hearing health through public education. She lectures at conferences, gives interviews to various music media, and trains audiologists in music audiology best practices. She has recently joined the WHO's Make Listening Safe committee for safe listening in music venues and organizes high-profile musicians to promote World Hearing Day on their social media. She is an avid concert-goer and can't help but chat about hearing protection in the crowd, even when she's “off the clock”.

The group, which also includes Taylor's brother, Griffin, has released nine full-length studio albums, six of which have hit the Top 5 on Billboard's Americana/Folk Albums chart, and four of which have hit the Top 10 on Billboard's rock chart. In addition to his work with Dawes, he has been a member of the band Middle Brother with Matt Vasquez of Delta Spirit and John McCauley of Deer Tick. Taylor also contributed to T Bone Burnett's New Basement Tapes project—which completed unfinished Bob Dylan songs—alongside Marcus Mumford, Jim James, Rhiannon Giddens, and Elvis Costello. As a songwriter outside the band, Taylor has collaborated with The Killers, Conor Oberst, Brandon Flowers, Robert Ellis, Demi Lovato, and his wife Mandy Moore. The most recent Dawes album, released in October of 2024, is called Oh Brother. Sadly, not long after our conversation, both Taylor and his brother Griffin became victims of the massive Southern California wildfires that devastated portions of the Los Angeles area and severely damaged or destroyed their homes.

Long Ryders singer/guitarist Sid Griffin, author of Million Dollar Bash: Bob Dylan, The Band, and the Basement Tapes, is here to try and convey the monumental impact that Garth and The Band had on American music and around the world, particularly in light of our present Post-Chalamet Dylan Renaissance,  And a reminder, you can still help Musicares help the people who bring you the music by donating at Musicares.org/firerelief and if you're a music business professional in need, you may be eligible for assistance by emailing musicaresrelief@musicares.org The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music.  Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton. This week on A Voice and Beyond, we share part two of my two-part interview with Lyndia Johnson. Her celebrated abilities as a vocal coach and in artist development are both highly respected in the music industry. Lyndia, also known in the Music Industry as “MzLyndia”, has built a relationship with the Recording Academy which has become a long-recognized and well-respected collaboration. She has also served on the Board of Governors for the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and a vocal consultant and clinician for MusiCares and Grammys. She holds both Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Voice and has been invited to serve as an Associate Professor of Practice in Pop Voice at the University of Southern California back in 2018. Proudly, she was the first African-American Professor of Voice engaged by the Thornton School of Music. From Pop, K-pop, R&B, and Gospel to Musical Theater, MzLyndia's artists can be heard around the world. In this episode, she delves deeper into her work preparing world-acclaimed music artists not only for the recording studio but also has the privilege of sharing the strategies she uses for assisting and supporting these artists when they face vocal issues amid a major tour. MzLyndia emphasizes the importance of understanding the performance and venue demands of our working students to ensure that what you are teaching, pedagogically, is relevant on stage, in a live situation.MzLyndia is an avid voice scientist, and she explains how this knowledge guides and informs her contemporary musical instructional style. She tells us that in a live concert, much of the vocal acoustics setup is configured in technology and can be dealt with by an audio engineer with the push of a button. MzLyinda explores the idea that, as singers, we are vocal athletes, and all athletes sustain injuries at some point. Therefore, it is time to stop shaming and improve the support systems for our singers. There's so much more to unpack in this episode as MzLyndia shares her knowledge, philosophies, and lived experiences. This week on A Voice and Beyond, we are very honored to have Lyndia Johnson as our special guest on the show. This is part one of a two-part interview with Lyndia, who is known in the Music Industry as “MzLyndia.” MzLyndia is not your average singing teacher and vocal coach. From touring with major artists to collaborating with music producers, she has spotlighted the need for vocal artist development in the music industry for over 25 years. Her celebrated abilities as a vocal coach and in artist development are highly respected. She has served on the Board of Governors for the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, as a vocal consultant and clinician for MusiCares, and was one of the original architects of the Grammy's Vocal Camp. Her relationship with the Recording Academy has been a long-recognized and well-respected collaboration. In this interview, we delve into Lyndia's vocal journey as she shares with us that her career success as a well-established opera singer was based on a unique combination of years of operatic study and growing up being influenced by the voices of Aretha, Gladys, Etta James, and Mahalia Jackson. Lyndia later transitioned her career to become a highly sought-after vocal coach among Pop, R&B, Gospel, and Musical Theatre artists who desire to brand and transform their voices.Lyndia also offers a service uniquely intended for Producers and Recording Artists. In the recording studio, Lyndia's role as a vocal coach is not only to solve any vocal problems that occur in the recording session but to work alongside the record producer to help enhance the singer's voice and to ensure the producer can capture the best tone/timbre and vocal delivery possible all while avoiding costly delays. According to Lyndia, this gives the producer the freedom to create a highly marketable and vocally attractive finished product that can then be sustainable for touring. This is a most fascinating interview with Lyndia Johnson, one of the music industry's most acclaimed vocal coaches. Remember this is part one of a two-part interview and part 2 will be released next week.In this Episode2:35 - Introduction8:32 - MzLyndia's Journey10:22 - Opera training and cultural identity19:27 - MzLyndia reflects on losing her voice23:06 - Learning Voice Science28:49 - Music industry, voice coaching, and legacy36:49 - Artist uniqueness in live performances vs. recordings49:47 - Voice coaching and artist developmentFind MzLyndia Online:Website: https://www.sterlingvoicecoaching.com/about Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lyndia.johnson.94/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mzlyndia/Twitter: https://twitter.com/SterlingVoice LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/lyndia-johnson-59504028 For more, go to https://drmarisaleenaismith.com/138.Like this episode? Jason hosts solo, giving him a chance to share the good news that he bought a house! For Jason, one of the biggest factors in his success story was receiving a scholarship to Recovery Unplugged, through the organization MusiCares, where Shireen Janti handled his case. MusiCares is a nonprofit that works to support the music community by offering help with preventative, emergency, and recovery programs. Shireen spent 18 years with MusiCares, and says the best part of her job was being able to say yes to people who asked for help. Shireen and Jason relate their shared experiences in recovery, and growing up with music industry parents. For Shireen, living in Los Angeles in the 70's and 80's was both an incredible experience, and an incredibly easy place to become an addict. When she finally got clean it was with the help of an organization similar to MusiCares, years later she never imagined she would find herself on the other side of the desk, saving lives. What does it take to finally see that you have a support system? What do we mean by, “you teach people how to treat you?” Check out the whole conversation on episode 70 of Talksicology. #RecoveryUnplugged #MusicCares #MusicCommunity #AddictionRecovery #SupportSystem #RecoveryStories #MusicIndustry #Talksicology #SuccessStory #AddictionPodcast

In today's episode,Tara talks to music fitness coach Angela McCuiston, the founder of Music Strong LLC, a business that specializes in personal fitness training for musicians! We explore her own personal journey of a music related injury and her healing as well as how she helps musicians get healthy in their body and stay healthy!     Angela developed an injury from playing the flute (which was her instrument of study) She had strain and imbalance of certain muscles and needed to find a way to get her body healthy again without just quitting her instrument.   “You don't throw out a soccer player when they pull a hamstring… or tell them to quit their sport…you just rehab them.”   Angela didn't find enough resources to help her heal properly so she looked into becoming a personal trainer.    “Up to 90% of musicians will either experience pain related playing or will have injuries.”   During a convention of flutists in Florida, people started asking Angela for help and someone asked if she would do a workshop and she did and started traveling around to universities to give them.   “Rest is NOT rehab.”   Angela sees a lot of shoulder, low back pain as well as weak core muscles. When people come to her, she starts with a movement assessment—upper and lower body— to help personalize what each individual needs.   One thing Angela uses is NeuroKinetic Therapy: This uses manual muscle testing to address the cause of pain It's a corrective movement system that addresses dysfunctional movement patterns stored in the brain.    Musicares—a division of the Grammy's that helps musicians.   You can get ahold of Angela here: https://musicstrong.com/   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/musicstrongfitness/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/musicstrong/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@MusicStrongFitnessTraining     You can grab more free helps at the Singing Hub: https://tarab.vipmembervault.com/products/courses/view/4   You can listen on Amazon Audible music, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, iHeart radio, PlayerFM, Spotify and more. Song of the Day
Spirit Award - Pushing Forward

Song of the Day

Spirit Award - Pushing Forward from the 2023 album The Fear on Share It Music. Seattle's Spirit Award, the project of Daniel Lyon and currently with Chris Jordan of Sunny Day Real Estate on bass, has been fine-tuning his brand of doom-filled psychedelic indie for over seven years now, with his upcoming fourth studio album The Fear destined to be one of his best. While they may only have one single out, it's an incredibly strong one and shows that Spirit Award are only getting better. “Pushing Forward” is a psychedelic journey into the recesses of the mind that technically refers to drugs but can be taken to a larger level. Unlike the long journey that drugs often take a mind through, the song breezes by with its layers of dreamy guitar play. While the song specifically references the paranoia post-drugs that requires one to either succumb to the fear or push forward through it, it has deeper layers for Lyon. “This idea for this song came about at a time of growth and realization, during some sleepless nights,” explains Lyon. “I had so many things getting thrown my way throughout my musical career; Vans getting broken into, gear stolen, rehearsal space getting robbed, identity getting stolen, van getting stolen, health problems, and most of all financial problems. The worst of all these has been a post-pandemic landscape which has changed how bands tour and put out music and try to make a living doing so. This has not only affected musicians but also music venues. Throughout all this, as a person and as a musician, I have always tried to keep ‘pushing forward'. So this song became a motivation to do so and sort of a rallying cry for our music community. I am thankful to have had the support of MusiCares and friends that helped me through a journey of growth and discovery. And knowing that no matter how low things get, there is hope.” The Fear is out May 19th via Share It Music. The video for “Pushing Forward” sees Lyon traverse a wild night helmed by some mystically masked characters and is directed by Seattle's Eric Luck.
