Poet, author and timeline cleanser David Larbi joins today. We talked about his sense of self, allowing yourself to grow despite the uncomfortability it causes, and having a good idea then following it! His new book Frequently Happy is a wonderful mix of poetry, self affirmations and journalling prompts - it's out now. Thanks to The Collab, Walthamstow. The Charlatans are about to release their fourteenth album We Are Love, a gladly psychedelic swish featuring perhaps my favourite Charlatans track ‘For The Girls' - dedicated to band members' families. Tim remembers the moment of running into Bez and Shaun Ryder of The Happy Mondays as he was checking into the hotel to detox, his favourite moments of the longer new Charalatans live shows, and how recording We Are Love at Rockfield was an embrace to his late bandmate Rob Collins. We Are Love is out 31 October. Thanks to Fender. Had this episode been released closer to Halloween, and/or I been a braver person, I would've given it the title "Grave Reads" because this week our Super Special Guest is none other than Sam Read-Graves, creator of the ONLY trolley problem themed video game worth YOUR time, funnily enough called Trolley Problem Inc. Sam is here to talk about development of his new game Task Time as well as how to not blow the budget when going to GDC. He's probably also very happy that I'm a wimp and decided not to go with my initial episode title. Meanwhile we have confessions, EA buyouts, GDC renames and Nintendo pop-ups! Health technologist and science communicator Caitlin Shure (NextSense) joins me to unpack brainwave-measuring earbuds that can both read and change your mental state—starting with sleep. We dive into why “Gen-1” wearables overwhelm you with charts but don't help you in the moment, how earbud-EEG works (yes, with just three electrodes), the messy truth on EMF fears, and why women—especially moms—need “do-it-for-me” tools, not just dashboards. The Bowers & Wilkins 801 isn't just another loudspeaker—it's the one Abbey Road Studios trusted when the music actually mattered. For 45 years, the 801 has been part of legendary recordings that shaped how we hear music, and now it's back in the spotlight with the 801 Abbey Road Limited Edition. Andy Kerr, Director of Marketing and Communications at Bowers & Wilkins, joins eCoustics CEO and Founder, Brian Mitchell to dig into how this speaker became the reference at the world's most famous studio, why Abbey Road didn't exactly choose it by accident, and what makes this anniversary edition more than just a fancy finish.Thank you to Denon, SVS and Shure for their support of our programming!www.svsound.comwww.denon.comwww.shure.comCredits:• Original intro music by The Arc of All. https://sourceoflightandpower.bandcamp.com• Voice Over Provided by Todd Harrell of SSP Unlimited. https://sspunlimited.com• Production by Mitch Anderson, Black Circle Studios. https://blackcircleradio.comDon't forget to check our website for daily updates on the latest electronics, news, recommendations, and deals on high-end audio, loudspeakers, earphones, TVs, and more.www.ecoustics.com#abbeyroadstudios #bowersandwilkins #studiomonitors #signatureseries #B&W801 #ecoustics #hifi #audiophile #hometheater #avtech #musicindustry #projectors #recordingstudios

Matt Berninger's excellent second solo album Get Sunk follows a slow exit from a serious depression where he couldn't get out of bed. Written on baseballs, deconstructed bedposts and anything else he could write lyrics on, the National singer writes songs like he's painting a picture. Once a graphic designer during the dot-com bubble in New York, he was going to formative gigs by The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio and The Walkmen. We hear about the profound influence Guided by Voices and Pavement had on his style, and how he has good ideas 51% of the time. Get Sunk is out now. Filmed at The Social, London. Working Men's Club's Sydney Minsky Sargeant puts out his debut album Lunga this Friday. The album was written around the track 'Lisboa', which while written years ago carries so much weight for Syd that he needed to eventually get it out his system. The whole album is ace, and is from a more mellow direction than the harshness of WMC. Here we hear about the importance of accessible music in Britain, small town gentrification and the strong foundations of working at a cafe. Famed for starting a Doors covers band to supplement income performing their own music, Field Music's David Brewis says it shouldn't come as a surprise. Despite sharing rehearsal spaces with 2000's mainstream indie bands The Futureheads and Maximo Park, the Brewis brothers had no interest in pleasing anyone else; only making music for themselves. Coming up to 20 years since their debut album, the Sunderland trio have nearly always done everything in-house, from self producing albums to driving themselves on tour. David has put his high level maths ability to good use on tour balance sheets while his brother Peter took what he learned working at youth centres to task in their band life. They play in London, Leeds and Sunderland to celebrate their anniversary in November, find more info and tickets at https://field-music.co.uk/ Get yourself some top class Shure microphone gear: https://shu.re/3YhV7p2 DistroKid makes music distribution fun and easy with unlimited uploads and artists keeping the ENTIRETY of their revenue. Nick begins with reflections on the date of September 4th, a bittersweet day marking both the passing of the legendary Roy Leonard and Nick's own difficult exit from a certain radio station. He shares why those memories matter, how they shaped him, and the perspective he's gained since. Writer Marnie Shure then joins the conversation to preview the upcoming Mortified event, the Printer's Row Lit Fest, and to dig into the history of podcasting. She also brings her monthly “Horror Report,” breaking down the latest scary films she's been watching. Later, Esmeralda Leon and Nick recap the recent Oasis concert at Soldier Field and continue their playful stroll through 90s pop culture, touching on slap bracelets, the early days of the Sony PlayStation, and how anyone survived earning just $3.80 an hour. Born from years in punk houses and assistant work in LA, and the disappointment of making something that doesn't sound like he thought it would. For Those I Love (aka David Balfe) is about to release his excellent new album Carving The Stone. He sits on how his uncle's DVD collection gave him his hard edges, the way The Streets' Original Pirate Material changed his life, Dublin's inaffordability, making his own videos and all the different jobs he's done to keep making music. Forgive the Audio. StreamYard changed my audio settings to a camera mic instead of my SHURE microphone. I was still hearing it fine because my rodecaster only monitors what's hooked up to it, and not the broadcast. I hear everything fine, but it came out below standards in quality. If you're not sure what to make of gothic Midsommar clad The New Eves, keep listening. There's the poetic thud of The Velvet Underground and autodidactic brilliance of The Slights, but it's the wide-eyed willingness that makes their first release and debut album The New Eves is rising that makes this Brighton band something very very special. Sat on the seafront, we heard about how imaginative living situations and a myriad of side hustles is key to their existence, and how they might well be haunted by a scarab beetle emerged from Tutankhamun's tomb. Swerving a teenage job at his uncle's timber yard, Laurie Vincent only ever wanted to be in a band. Soft Play shouldn't work on paper (guitar, stand-up drums, Adidas tracksuits), but it definitely does work blasted loud in massive venues. Laurie has loved, lost and reconnected as he's grown up in public. Heavy Jelly is Soft Play's return to enjoyable disruption and destruction. Now with bumper edition Heavier Jelly - ft. Kate Nash. Recorded with an audience at Tate Modern, July 2025. Nick previews all the bloody fun coming to the Flashback Weekend Horror Convention, including a special live taping of this podcast with Esmeralda Leon, special guests Svengoolie and actress Dee Wallace (yes, the mom from E.T.), and the chance for fans to be part of the action. It's happening soon, and Nick's ready for mayhem. Later, he's joined by food writer and horror superfan Marnie Shure for a chat about her clever pieces like Trail to Taproom and Sauteed Standup, and what she's been watching lately. From the cult classic They Live to early reactions to 28 Years Later, it's a feast of horror talk. Then Esma returns to share more Flashback excitement and muse on the joys of aging, Ozzy Osbourne's final bow, and the new season of South Park, which kicks off with a jaw-dropping premiere. [Ep 370]
“The brain wave is not just a scientific object—it's a cultural one.” – Dr. Caitlin ShureWhat is a brain wave? How “brain waves” became a metaphor for mind control, telepathy, and spiritual resonance. That's the question we explore in one of the most surprising and thought-provoking episodes of the Thriving Minds podcast to date—with science journalist and technologist Dr. Caitlin Shure, whose PhD work traced the strange cultural journey of the brainwave from telepathy and spiritualism to modern neurotech and wellness wearables. Link to Episode #202: Brainwaves, Culture, and the Future of Healing. It turns out this simple question—"What is a brain wave?"—unlocks a much deeper one:What do we really believe about the brain, the body, and our capacity to heal?A deceptively simple question—yet one that opens a portal into 150+ years of science, culture, and imagination. The Rise (and Risk) of Neuroscience/Brain-Based EverythingToday, brainwaves are everywhere—from EEG sleep trackers and meditation headbands to marketing slogans and Instagram therapists. And yet:Most people don't know what a brain wave isMany companies use “neuroscience” language without scientific rigourConsumers are caught between hope, hype, and helplessnessCaitlin and I discussed how this confusion reflects a crisis in our time:
