Sovereign AI is to become a cornerstone of national strategies, enabling countries to develop their own AI infrastructure and capabilities, thereby enhancing strategic resilience and fostering innovation, it will also play a crucial role in sectors such as healthcare and finance, driving advancements and improving security in an increasingly interconnected world. This week, Dave, Esmee and Rob talk to Chris Stokel-Walker, Journalist, author and communicator specializing in tech, AI, and digital culture (including YouTube and TikTok) about the notion of sovereign AI and how that might develop as part of the AI world going forward.TLDR04:50 Rob is confused about Net Neutrality 08:40 Cloud conversation with Chris Stokel-Walker45:42 Superintelligence and how the public and policymakers understand and react to technology 54:50 Going to an art exhibition opening and e-textiles Guest:Chris Stokel-Walker: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stokel/HostsDave Chapman: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chapmandr/Esmee van de Giessen: https://www.linkedin.com/in/esmeevandegiessen/Rob Kernahan: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-kernahan/ProductionMarcel van der Burg: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marcel-vd-burg/Dave Chapman: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chapmandr/SoundBen Corbett: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-corbett-3b6a11135/Louis Corbett: https://www.linkedin.com/in/louis-corbett-087250264/'Cloud Realities' is an original podcast from Capgemini
The internet was supposed to be a free, open, and revolutionary space—but somewhere along the way, it was stolen. In this eye-opening episode, we uncover how big tech monopolies, government surveillance, and corporate greed gradually seized control of the digital world, turning what was once a decentralized information highway into a data-mined, profit-driven, heavily monitored system.Who really owns the internet? How did giants like Google, Facebook, and Amazon rise to power, dictating what we see, share, and believe? And how have governments used mass surveillance, censorship, and data collection to manipulate the web into a tool of control rather than freedom? We take a deep dive into the early days of the internet, the rise of Silicon Valley powerhouses, and the critical moments where control slipped from the people to corporations and intelligence agencies. From net neutrality battles to the hidden forces shaping online discourse, this episode exposes how the internet was hijacked and what that means for our future. Can the web ever be taken back? Or are we now permanently plugged into a system designed to track, manipulate, and control us?
Meg forces Ned to explain Net Neutrality on the spot, and then after that we talk about how US courts just overturned it, which is bad. In addition to the bad idea of ending net neutrality, we also talk about flat earth. Thanks for listening, wash your hands, don't be a dick!

With net neutrality A recent U.S. appeals court decision ended the idea of net neutrality. It said the Federal Communications Commission lacked authority to regulate internet service and broadband providers. The incoming F-C-C chair, Brendan Carr, was already planning to undo Biden administration rules *for* net neutrality favored by the outgoing F-C-C chair. For what the broadband industry hopes for next, we turn to the president and C-E-O of the trade group U.S. Telecom, Jonathan Spalter. Learn more about your ad choices.
It's our first Emptywheel Friday of the new year, a year which promises to be anything but easy, productive or frankly good. Which makes it more important than ever that we keep speaking truth to power and expose the incoming administration for what they are. So Marcy Wheeler and I are back today, and every Friday going forward. Today, the Convicted Felon was sentenced by Judge Merchan in the NY Business Fraud case in which he was found guilty on all 34 counts. Unfortunately, due to the office he'll be assuming again in 10 days, the judge "sentenced" Trump to *unconditional discharge*. No jail time, no punishment except for the fact that he is now, officially, a convicted felon. A discussion of how we got here started today's discussion, after a brief conversation about the fires that have and are still devastating Los Angeles. We also talked about the courts gutting the Net Neutrality rules that have kept this show and other small independent outlets on an equal footing with the corporate media, much of who are complicit in perpetuating the propaganda that got us here in the first place. So now more than ever, it's important that you support the media you consume and appreciate. We need your support to keep going. If you can, I hope you'll support both emptywheel.net and my work at nicolesandler.com/donate-2. Let's do whatever we can to cut through the lies and deception by spreading the truth and making it go viral.

It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Lee Hepner, senior legal counsel for the American Economic Liberties Project, to discuss the recent overturning of net neutrality. Then they speak with Joshua Kaplan, reporter at ProPublica, to discuss his recent piece entitled "The Militia and the Mole." First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the DoJ's release of details related to Trump's Jan 6th- and Stolen Documents-related cases, mass evacuations amid wildfires in LA, Dem's retaining of the Virginia legislature, the North Carolina Supreme Court's anti-democratic move, the House's massive anti-immigration bill, DoJ action over the RealPage rent-fixing scheme and the prior weaponization of the department under Trump, Israel's ongoing slaughter of Gazans in supposed safe zones, and ACA expansion, before unpacking a recent report on the unsurprising misinformation around gender-affirming care for adolescents. Lee Hepner then joins, jumping right into an extensive history of Net Neutrality, stemming from the establishment of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) under FDR's New Deal to preserve open networks and fair communication, with the 1996 Communications Act expanding its coverage to the internet and contributing to the arguments to expand to full Net Neutrality building under Bush before coming to fruition under Obama, only to be killed and restored by Trump and Biden respectively, all leading to the recent 6th Circuit decision to, once again, kill it. After tackling what Net Neutrality exactly is (the mandate for providers to serve websites equally) and expanding on the particular role the overturning of the Chevron Deference Doctrine played in this decision, Hepner wraps up with tactics to push back against this decision, and whether federalism will help keep these corporations in line. Joshua Kaplan then walks Sam and Emma through his extensive reporting on the far-right militia American Patriots 3% (AP3), tackling their role within the wider extremist militia ecosystem and how they used that to distance the organization from the January 6th insurrection attempt before having a wider discussion on the initial backlash (even internally) to these organizations in the wake of 1/6 before a steady rhetorical pivot from Trump and the GOP reversed the tides completely, and why that should concern us heading into a second Trump Administration with threats of mass pardoning for violent participators and organizers of 1/6. After expanding on AP3's odd “big tent” identity amid right-wing militias, Kaplan touches on his extensive conversations with a mole from AP3 and the role Facebook played in the militia's outreach, before wrapping up with the genuine threat posed by the extensive military training of these groups, both offered by the groups themselves and aided by their extensive connections to police, military, and veteran organizations. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma unpack the response from Mexico's President Scheinbaum to Trump's absurd statements on the US' territorial rights, the passage of the GOP's Lincoln Riley Bill with support from myriad Congressional Dems – including John “Manchin 2.0” Fetterman – to hand over immigration enforcement to the states (alongside the right to deport without criminal conviction). Chris Hayes reflects on the short history of Facebook's moderation team, John from Montreal on Trump's antagonization of US allies, and Kowalski from Nebraska parses through the future of farming amid threats to land ownership and more. It's Casual Friday! Sam & Emma speak with Jeet Heer, national affairs correspondent for The Nation, to discuss the upcoming stories to watch in 2025. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the House vote over the GOP Speakership, Trump's transition team, Biden's blocking of the Nippon Steel's takeover of US Steel, GOP judges killing Net Neutrality, the identities behind the attacks in New Orleans and Las Vegas, California captive audience ban, Bird Flu, SEIU action, and Social Security retirement age requirements, before expanding on today's big Speakership vote as Mike Johnson begins to feel the heat. Jeet Heer then joins, diving right into today's ongoing fight over the Speakership, unpacking why, despite all the groveling, the GOP is likely to stand firm in line, just as they do with Trump. Next, Heer, Sam, and Emma parse thoroughly through the OTHER ongoing fight amid the GOP over the validity of H-1B Visas, a work visa for immigrants that puts their rights and wellbeing entirely in the hands of the corporation that employs them, unpacking the pro-H-1B (let's exploit immigrants) and anti-H-1B (no, we hate immigrants!) arguments on the right, before diving deeper into a genuine leftist critique of how these visa's work to lower rights for both workers and immigrants writ large, and the right's desire to use them as a part of their Social Darwinist vision. Jeet also expands on the failing tactic among progressive Democrats to work within the DNC power structure, tackling the potential for a new progressive movement to build up power in the House and Senate outside of the party infrastructure, and the growing possibility of said movement as we enter an era of seemingly anti-system electorate, also responding to some pushback about the mutual-exclusion of being a party outsider while still working with the party, before wrapping up with a brief conversation on Jordan Peterson, Pierre Poilievre, and the state of Canadian politics. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through the ongoing discourse from the GOP over H-B1 visas, as the embrace of the exploitation of immigrants comes in conflict with the rejection of those immigrants themselves, with Charlie Kirk's crew helping to add some “DEI” dog-whistling into the mix. They also watch Mike Johnson sulk his way out of Congress until his ultimate victory in the speakership vote, and Sam walks the audience through the absurdities of Social Security's income cap, plus, your calls and IMs! Here are 3 big things you need to know— One — The FBI is asking for anyone who may have passed by or saw the New Orleans terror suspect to contact authorities. The agency released surveillance images showing Shamsud-Din Jabbar near Bourbon Street more than an hour before the attack that killed at least 14 people. The images show Jabbar and a cooler that contained an improvised explosive device that was placed on the street. Two ---- Two people are dead and at least 18 more are injured after a plane crashed into a warehouse in Fullerton, California. The plane reportedly crashed into the building around 2 p.m. Thursday. Of the 18 people injured, ten were taken to a hospital and eight were treated at the scene. And number three — A U.S. Court of Appeals has struck down the FCC's “net neutrality” rules governing internet service providers. Democrats considered the reinstatement of net neutrality as a major accomplishment under the Biden administration. Net neutrality was adopted by the FCC under the Obama administration, reversed under Trump (when we were told people would die if the policy were removed) then reinstated under President Joe Biden. No one perished.
Here's why we cannot let it die...

The Supreme Court has just taken on the entire idea of the US administrative state — and the Court is winning. Earlier this month, a conservative majority overturned a longstanding legal principle called Chevron deference. The implications are enormous for every possible kind of regulation — and net neutrality looks poised to be the first victim. Verge editor Sarah Jeong joins me to explain why. One of these debates that resurfaces with every cycle is that of net neutrality. This is the basic idea that internet service providers have to be neutral about the way they provide access to different areas of the Internet. The company you pay to provide you with internet shouldn't restrict your access to websites based on their political alignment, for example. This is a principle on which most people agree, but the policies around it can be much more contentious. So what is going on with net neutrality now? And why does it matter? I sat down with Annie Chestnut Tutor, Policy Analyst in the Tech Policy Center here at the Heritage Foundation, to find out. — Have thoughts? It's Casual Friday! Emma speaks with political commentator Owen Jones to round up the week in news. Then she speaks with comedian Kate Willett! First, Emma runs through updates on the brutal assault on Emory students and faculty protesting genocide and cop-city by the Atlanta police, mass arrests of anti-war protesters on college campuses across the US, Israel's imminent invasion of Rafah, US troops' presence in Chad, Trump's legal woes, Net Neutrality, the climate crisis, and new anti-trans legislation out of Tennessee, before parsing through some rather telling comments from the ongoing Supreme Court case about Trump's potential immunity as President, with representation going as far as to make space for immunity over extra-judicial assassinations. Owen Jones then joins, as he and Emma reflect on the last seven months of constant scenes of devastation and genocide coming out of Gaza, and the mainstream media's heart-wrenching insistence on downplaying the horror, denying the deaths, and running cover for Israel's project of ethnic cleansing under the guise of victimhood. Expanding on this, Jones and Emma explore how the severe repression and propaganda from mainstream Western political institutions is seeing an en-masse public awakening to the genocide of Gaza, and the Western elites' violent commitment to controlling the discourse, with supposed “liberal democracies” from the US to the EU and UK defaming anti-zionist Jews and anti-semites and uplifting actual racists and Jew-haters as legitimate actors. After parsing through the absurdity of the media's insistence on ignoring the obvious rhetoric and policy that has shaped Israel's approach to this entire war, Owen steps back to look to the role of the UK in particular, with the Labor Party's step back from the coalition of Jeremy Corbin at the end of the last decade, and committing itself fully to Israel's agenda of dehumanization and hasbara. Wrapping up, Jones walks Emma through the performative cruelty of the UK's Tory government's ongoing illegal and immoral deportation scheme for asylum seekers. Kate Willet also joins, as she and Emma discuss the repression of left-wing beliefs in the supposedly “liberal” entertainment industry, and the growing trend of the industry's support for right-wing reactionary comics. Kate and the MR Team explore the attempt to present left-wing comedy as hyper-politicized and right-wing comedy as almost de-politicized, before wrapping up by touching on the difficulty of escaping the self-censorship pushed on women and lefties when it comes to speaking out about politics. And in the Fun Half: Emma previews new allegations about Kristi Noam's killer personality, watch Briahna Joy Gray refuse to back down from Rising Co-Host Robby Soave's fascist criticism of student protests, reflects on the greater failure of the US media amid this crackdown on free speech, and listen to Donald Trump attempt to frame these non-violent protests as worse than Charlottesville. Shawn Hannity's Blonde and blue-eyed guest waxes about the severity of the ongoing “illegal occupation” of Pal– I mean– of college campuses by students who pay tuition to be there, and the MR Crew discusses the media's reproduction of genocidal propaganda, plus, your calls and IMs!
