'Fly me to the moon; Let me play among the stars; Let me see what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars' sings Frank Sinatra in one of his songs. This was my dream when I was younger. To really go to other planets. Sinatra sang about his love for a woman and I was in love with astronomy. I even had my own telescope! That's why the very first episode of Polish With John was about this topic. Later, I added an introduction episode, so it made the one about astronomy number two. Today, I'm coming back to the topic with some more advanced stuff. We will learn about planets, our Solar System and even go for a short trip around the galaxy. An adventure for all the brave ones! I'm sure you are those brave ones as you were courageous enough to start learning Polish! So fasten your seat belts because the rocket goes off! I hope that the thirteenth episode will be a lucky one. Today's topic is sleeping and dreaming when you sleep. In Polish the word 'sen' means a dream while you sleep. Christmas is here! At least in Poland, where we have two days of holidays. The celebration starts with a special dinner on 24 December and lasts on 25 and 26 December. Nice, isn't it? The reason for this celebration is the symbolic date of Jesus's birth. Question. Can we know if he actually lived? Are there any historical records about him? I love exceptional people. Those who do something to really change the world. They are so inspirational! One of such figures is for me Kazimierz Prószyński - a great Polish inventor who laid the grounds for film industry. His inventions were used world-wide and allowed us to see the beginnings of the 20. century on the film tape. This episode is about him and his work. Playing video games or just gaming is considered nowadays a sport! I remember my parents telling me that I spent too much time playing computer games. Well, they didn't know that that was a sport. I've learnt a lot of English vocabulary at that time as the games weren't translated. That's why I decided to talk about my favourite game - Cities Skylines. I love building virtual cities and there is no better option than this Colossal Order production. If you are into gaming you probably know it already, if not - why not give it a try? If you learn Polish this is a podcast for you, even if you're not a gamer. There are many famous places all around the world and they're usually a reason to be proud of. Not in Barcelona! It turns out that the local mayor forced the organisation responsible for the construction on Sagrada Familia to pay an enormous amount of money as a fine for building the church without a permit. Millions of tourists coming to the city and visiting the place with all the money they leave seem not to be enough for Ada Colau, the mayor. Let's listen to the newest episode. Here it is, the third episode and it's all about books! Books written by Marta Kisiel, my favourite author. Be aware - they are a challenge for a reader as the language is so, so good, beautiful and witty. If you want to know more - listen to the podcast and then find out for yourself. At the end of the post, you'll find the beginning of "Dożywocie", a long fragment for advanced readers. The first episode is about my greatgreatgreat grandfather's library which was exceptional. Poland didn't exist at that time as an independent state (it was 19. century) but the culture was so strong, that my ancestors who came to the region of Galicja quickly started feeling Polish, picked up the language. Two generations later, one of them, Andrew Reichard, despite the German surname was killed in a German concentration camp just because he was Polish. This episode, however, is about Andrzej's grandfather - Franz or Franciszek. He was one of the first of Reichards family who came to Galicja. When I learnt about his stunning book collection, I immediately understood where my book addiction comes from!Check out the full transcript of this episode, vocabulary, grammar and other respources on my blog! https://wp.me/p4D8ou-SyIf you like my podcast, support me on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/ioannesoculusMusic used in the podcast:"The Show Must Be Go" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/This is a podcast for people learning Polish.
