Hij vertelt hoe EU-lidstaten concreet op die langetermijnstrategie inspelen. Zo moeten grote infraplannen gerealiseerd worden voor duurzaam spoorverkeer over de nationale grenzen heen. Aanleg van hogesnelheidsverbindingen tussen Europese metropolen is een grote prioriteit, waar met veel elan aan gewerkt wordt. Minstens zo'n uitdaging blijken de regelstelsels van de lidstaten die elkaar vaak in de weg zitten. Van nationale seinsystemen tot energiekosten waarbij het vliegverkeer nu nog bevoordeeld wordt. De toerismesector is zeer dynamisch. Er is ruimte voor 1 miljoen meer banen en jong talent. Ook daarom is het uitwisselen van bewezen methoden tussen lidstaten, regio's en steden essentieel. Het aansturen van grote bezoekersstromen in culturele hotspots geeft heel wat steden hoofdpijn. Scheefgegroeid toerisme is geen tijdelijk verschijnsel dat zich vanzelf oplost. Oud-eurocommissaris en oud-landbouwminister Franz Fischler herkent vanuit zijn werk op het hoogste niveau in Brussel veel van zulke uitdagingen, zeker voor 'groene regio's'. Hij was in 1995 de eerste Eurocommissaris uit Oostenrijk, dat pas na akkoord van Gorbatsjov EU-lid kon worden. Hij was ook de eerste commissaris die een 'multinationaal kabinet' samenstelde: zes sherpa’s die hem door de Brusselse beleidsjungle loodsten. Meteen bij zijn start kreeg hij de zwaarste portefeuille: landbouw en rurale ontwikkeling. Hoe zijn land de EU in kwam schildert hij met kleurrijke verhalen. Er was een referendum voor nodig. Toen voorstander Jörg Haider – leider van de radicaal-rechtse Vrijheidspartij – ontdekte dat de Groenen de enige oppositie waren, wendde hij de steven en ging bij Fischlers boerenachterban het anti-Europavuurtje opstoken. Dat mislukte. Hoe dat verliep is ook nu nog leerzaam voor de actuele politiek. In de Europese Commissie zag Fischler hoe Jacques Chirac met Gerhard Schröder de landbouwhervorming torpedeerde die hij later alsnog voor elkaar kreeg. "Een gedegen hervorming lukt alleen als je een goede strategie hebt ontwikkeld. En die moet je publiekelijk niet volledig ventileren, maar stap voor stap realiseren." Fischler vertelt met smaak over zijn belevenissen met collega's als president Romano Prodi, Michel Barnier en Frits Bolkestein. "Die was niet zozeer eurosceptisch als wel een scepticus over heel de mensheid, van nature." Ursula von der Leyen noemt hij ‘een sterkere president’ dan de professorale Prodi, maar een waarschuwing geeft hij wel af. "Ze trekt alle besluitvorming naar zich toe. De sfeer in de Commissie is minder goed dan in mijn tijd. En 27 commissarissen is te veel. Dat moet minder, zoals in het Verdrag staat. (CNS photo)  Saint of the Day for June 7 (May 20, 1907 – August 9, 1943) Blessed Franz Jägerstätter's Story Called to fight for his country as a Nazi soldier, Franz Jägerstätter eventually refused, and this husband and father of three daughters—Rosalie, Marie and Aloisia—was executed because of it. Born in St. Radegund in Upper Austria, Franz Jägerstätter lost his father during World War I and was adopted after Heinrich Jaegerstaetter married Rosalia Huber. As a young man, he loved to ride his motorcycle and was the natural leader of a gang whose members were arrested in 1934 for brawling. For three years he worked in the mines in another city and then returned to St. Radegund, where he became a farmer, married Franziska and lived his faith with quiet but intense conviction. In 1938, he publicly opposed the German Anschluss–annexation–of Austria. The next year he was drafted into the Austrian army, trained for seven months and then received a deferment. In 1940, Franz was called up again but allowed to return home at the request of the town's mayor. He was in active service between October 1940 and April 1941, but was again deferred. His pastor, other priests, and the bishop of Linz urged him not to refuse to serve if drafted. In February 1943, Franz was called up again and reported to army officials in Enns, Austria. When he refused to take the oath of loyalty to Hitler, he was imprisoned in Linz. Later he volunteered to serve in the medical corps but was not assigned there. During Holy Week Blessed Franz Jägerstätter wrote to his wife: “Easter is coming and, if it should be God's will that we can never again in this world celebrate Easter together in our intimate family circle, we can still look ahead in the happy confidence that, when the eternal Easter morning dawns, no one in our family circle shall be missing—so we can then be permitted to rejoice together forever.” He was transferred in May to a prison in Berlin. Challenged by his attorney that other Catholics were serving in the army, Franz responded, “I can only act on my own conscience. I do not judge anyone. I can only judge myself.” He continued, “I have considered my family. I have prayed and put myself and my family in God's hands. I know that, if I do what I think God wants me to do, he will take care of my family.” On August 8, 1943, Franz wrote to Fransizka: “Dear wife and mother, I thank you once more from my heart for everything that you have done for me in my lifetime, for all the sacrifices that you have borne for me. I beg you to forgive me if I have hurt or offended you, just as I have forgiven everything…My heartfelt greetings for my dear children. I will surely beg the dear God, if I am permitted to enter heaven soon, that he will set aside a little place in heaven for all of you.” Franz Jägerstätter was beheaded and cremated the following day. In 1946, his ashes were reburied in St. Radegund near a memorial inscribed with his name and the names of almost 60 village men who died during their military service. He was beatified in Linz on October 26, 2007. His “spiritual testament” is now in Rome's St. Bartholomew Church as part of a shrine to 20th-century martyrs for their faith. Drei Tropfen Blut im Schnee und ein Fensterrahmen aus Ebenholz. – Die Geschichte vom Schneewittchen aus Lohr am Main und den Spessarträubern So beginnt eines der bekanntesten Märchen aus der Sammlung der Brüder Grimm: Schneewittchen. Nur wo mag das gewesen sein? Bei uns, sagen selbstredend gleich zwei Schneewittchen-Orte in deutschen Landen. Beide sind schön und einen Besuch wert. Einer liegt in Bad Wildungen-Bergfreiheit im nordhessischen Kreis Waldeck-Frankenberg. Den Anderen, der hier Thema ist, findet man im fränkischen Lohr am Main am Rande des Spessarts. Was dran ist? Wer im Podcast gut zuhört weiß ganz schnell mehr. Die Lohrer Schneewittchen-Variante Hier klingen einige Teile etwas anders als bei Jakob und Wilhelm Grimm und wer genauer nachschaut, wird auch feststellen, dass die Entdeckung dieser ganz anderen Geschichte noch gar nicht so lange zurückliegt. Verantwortlich für Ansprüche und Entwicklung der Theorien ist gewissermaßen ein Stammtisch aus Apotheker, Museumsleiter und Schuster. Der Apotheker Dr. Karl-Heinz Bartels hatte sich Gedanken gemacht, die Geschichte studiert und den Schluss entwickelt, dass nach diesen Recherche, Schneewittchen in Lohr am Main zuhause gewesen sein muss. Begründet wurde das aus dem Ansatz der „Fabulologie“ heraus. Nie gehört? Auf der Website der Stadt Lohr steht dazu: Das Wort „Fabulologie“ hat nichts mit „fabulieren“ zu tun, wie manche meinen. „Fabulologie“ ist ein Mixtur aus „Fabula“ (lateinisch; das Märchen) und „logos“ (griechisch: Wissenschaft, Lehre). Vielleicht sogar noch mit einem „lo“ aus dem Namen Lohr in der Wortmitte! Heraus kam jedenfalls ein Wort, das es bis heute in keiner Sprache der Welt gibt. Das hat sich im Lauf der Jahre als großer Erfolg erwiesen. Das “Horrorwittchen” Als dann die Stadt noch eine „zeitgemäße“ Schneewittchen-Statue in Auftrag gab. Das Ergebnis des Wettbewerbs, die Statue von Peter Wittstadt, gefiel nicht Allen, aber Lohr am Main kam endgültig in die Schlagzeilen. Damit könnte man das Kapitel beenden und den Lohrern zum märchenhaften Anziehungspunkt gratulieren. Und das sind gar nicht mal wenige. Besonders beliebt ist das Städtchen gerade bei Besuchern aus den USA. Die machen gerne mal eine Flusskreuzfahrt auf dem Main, stoppen natürlich bei „Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs“ und werden vom Original Schneewittchen durch die Stadt geführt. Schneewittchen – Faktencheck Das wollten wir genau wissen und haben den fabulologischen Faktencheck gemacht. Das machen wir natürlich mit den überall auftauchenden Zeitzeugen gemacht. Es gibt sie reichlich.   Die Mutter Wo beginnt man? Am besten bei der leiblichen Mutter, denn Mama muss es ja schließlich wissen. Und dort ist sie immer noch. Das Gespräch war nicht ganz einfach, hat die Adlige aus dem Taunus, doch noch immer einige „höfische Marotten“ – Immerhin war sie auskunftsfreudig und hatte auch keine Angst vor modernen Mikrofonen. So konnten wir die Existenz ihrer Tochter Maria Sophia von Ehrtal nachweisen war sie doch so rot wie Blut, so weiß wie Schnee und ihr Haar so schwarz wie Ebenholz. Auch erzählte sie von einem sprechenden Spiegel, der aus der einst angesiedelten Glasmanufaktur stammt. Wir haben geprüft und festgestellt, dass der Spiegel noch immer im Schloss hängt. Schneewittchen begrüßte uns und schenkte jedem Anwesenden einen wundervollen Apfel aus dem Korb, den sie mit sich führte. Sie erzählte zusätzlich von ihrem harten Schicksal mit der Stiefmutter, die nach dem Tod der Mutter an der Seite des Herrn Papas stand. Von den Vorkommnissen rund um den sprechenden Spiegel und von der Flucht zu den sieben Zwergen. Sie wird uns doch nicht angelogen haben? Die echten! Warum also sollte man der nochmaligen Bestätigung von Historikern, Archäologen und einer Ethnologin in Sachen Berge, Bergwerken und Zwergen widersprechen. Es ist ja alles auch schon so lange her. Märchen kommt ja auch von Mär, einem alten deutschen Wort für Erzählung, Sage oder Nachricht. Die Schlussfolgerung heißt frei nach einem alten Philosophen: Ich weiß, dass ich nicht alles weiß, aber es hätte so gewesen sein können. Das Städtchen liegt ungefähr auf halber Strecke zwischen Aschaffenburg und Würzburg. Der Turm stammt aus dem 13./14. Jahrhundert, hat sechs Etagen, 40 Meter Höhe und ist der letzte vorhandene der Stadtbefestigung. Das „Spessart Museum“, da wo auch der sprechende Spiegel hängt beschäftigt sich mit der regionalen Geschichte und damit natürlich auch mit den Spessarträubern. Every sailor has a vision for how a voyage is supposed to begin. Mine involved launching in Indiantown, pointing the bow toward the Bahamas, and slipping into warm trade winds and turquoise water. Instead, 2026 had other ideas. In this episode of Sailing in the Mediterranean and Beyond, I tell the story of the first leg of this year's sailing adventure — a trip defined less by tropical anchorages and more by stubborn weather forecasts, cold nights, and constant recalculating. After launching the boat in Indiantown, I waited for a weather window that never really arrived. Rather than bash east into uncomfortable conditions, I made the difficult decision to abandon the Bahamas plan entirely and head north up the Intracoastal Waterway instead. What followed was a voyage full of the kinds of moments every cruiser knows well: Grumpy lock keepers who seemed personally offended that we existed Barnacles multiplying underneath the boat and slowing us down Long cold passages where “Florida” felt a lot more like winter than paradise The challenge of adapting plans when nature simply refuses to cooperate Eventually, I brought the boat to Cape Marina at Cape Canaveral, where I tucked her away for two months before returning later with my family to continue the trip north toward St. Augustine. This episode is about flexibility, frustration, and the reality that cruising rarely looks like the glossy version we imagine beforehand. Sometimes the adventure is not the one you planned — but the one you end up with anyway.
