Happy second birthday to us! That's right, this podcast is entering it's terrible two's and in classic toddler fashion it has become incredibly temperamental and impossible to reason with. We encountered some technical difficulties the first time we did this so you are listening to take two (itself not free from tech issues, unfortunately) and we are answering some of you, our listeners, most pressing questions! We are giving you all the mildly interesting details about how we pick a show topic, what we wish we could buy at Trader Joe's, what our favorite episode was and so much more! The Birthday Gurl 6 apricots, chopped and pitted 1 pint raspberries 1 pint strawberries, sliced 1 ripe mango, peeled and diced 1 lime, sliced 1/4 cup sugar 3/4 cup ruby red grapefruit juice 1/4 cup elderflower liquor 2 bottles of rosé In a large pitcher, combine all the fruit and the sugar and muddle well. We’re waxing nostalgic for a time before half the things in our kitchens were covered in paraffin. Why, you ask? Because we made candles! Stupid, barely scented, fifty dollar candles. We never promised you a rose garden (scented candle) and we never promised you we’d actually succeed at half the shit we do for this show! But we can laugh at our failures, right? Or at least you all can! In addition to our adventures with wax, Alissa figured out the recipe for full box Chex mix, Liz’s vision board continues to bring the hits, Liz’s daughter discovered the wonders of self-rising flour and we learn that we are pretty clueless as to the size of an acre.   The Basic B-swax 1.5 cups of strawberry purée (purée strawberries in a blender with a splash of water) 1/4 cup honey simple syrup (equal parts honey and water, heated until honey dissolves) Juice of one lime 3 oz gin 16 oz ice 1/4 tsp habanero salt   Combine all ingredients in a blender and whiz it up! Makes two drinks.   Full Box Chex Mix Use a full regular size box each of Wheat Chex, Corn Chex and Rice Chex, about 3 cups pretzel sticks and 3 cups nuts. In the face of situational chaos, all of us appreciate strong leadership. We value the clear and confident voice of the one who knows what to do—we value their knowledge—and we listen to what they say. Leadership provides clarity, order, and the pressure necessary to help all of us do what must be done. But there are plenty of examples where placing this kind of trust in a human leader has led to disaster. That’s why the Gospel of Matthew won’t ascribe such authority to anyone, not even Jesus. It is the teaching that Jesus carries—the word that he speaks—to which we look for direction. This word was handed down from above as the immutable will of God our Father, the Patrician of all, whose authority brings order to the household of the nations. Richard and Fr. Marc discuss Matthew 8:23-27. Thanks to all of our listeners for supporting this live recording of the podcast. It was great to see many of you at this year’s symposium. Just like your mom always told you, breakfast really is the most important cocktail of the day. Breakfast foods are maybe some of our most favorite foods so we’re a little shocked that it’s taken so long to actually do this episode. We made congee, shakshuka, grits and yeasted waffles, not to mention the sunniest, most refreshing tequila cocktail you’ve ever had before 10 am. The Sunshine Mary 3 stalks of celery Juice of one lemon  1 cup fresh carrot juice 1/2 cup fresh yellow tomato juice  Pinch of salt  2 oz tequila    Blend the celery and lemon juice together in food processor or blender.   Add carrot and tomato juice to celery mixture with pinch of salt and blend.    Pour blended mixture into a shaker filled with ice. Add tequila. Shake until cold. Strain into ice filled glasses that are rimmed with salt. Makes 2 cocktails.      Congee - Liz made the broth from this recipe and used the Instant Pot instructions from this recipe.   Shakshuka   Liz Harvatine's "You're Worth It" Grits for One   In a small pot, bring 1 cup chicken stock to a boil. Slowly whisk in 1/3 cup (not instant) grits. Cook for about 10 to 15 minutes, stirring frequently, until the liquid is absorbed and the grits are tender. Add up to 1/2 cup of milk, cream or combination of the two and a pat of butter. Cook until thick and creamy. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve in a bowl, topped with soft scrambled eggs, grated cheddar, scallions, diced tomatoes, parsley, flakey salt and freshly ground black pepper.    Yeasted Waffles   Two Ingredient Biscuits  Hey! Pucker up, we picked a bushel of lemons and turned them into absolutely everything we could think of, minus lemonade. Limoncello, lemon cheesecake, Atlantic Beach pie (we know, what?), chicken piccata, and lemon salad. Ooh la la, it was delicious. Liz has also been unable to resist remaking 2 of our 3 fast food copy cats AND she tried (and failed) to duplicate our former macaron glory. The Sourpuss Make lemon sugar: finely chop the zest of one lemon and combine with 2 tbsp white sugar. Rim a champagne coupe or flute with lemon juice and lemon sugar. In the glass, combine 1 tbsp of limoncello, 1 tsp lemon juice and 3 dashes of angostura bitters. Fill glass rest of the way with champagne.   Limoncello Chicken Piccata Atlantic Beach Pie Cheesecake Number 17-Alissa used this recipe but lemon-ed it up by using lemon cookies for the crust, adding a lot of lemon zest to the batter, using limoncello in place of vanilla and topping the whole cheesecake with lemon curd (recipe for that below). Lemon Curd Preserved Lemons Lemon Cupcakes Lemon Salad Tomatoes (grape/cherry tomatoes unless it’s tomato season) Red Onion Cucumber Red or yellow bell pepper Iceberg lettuce Lemons Neutral oil Salt Finely ground pepper Slice tomatoes and thinly slice onions. Place in the bottom of a large salad bowl and toss with salt. Let them sit while you prepare the other ingredients. Chop cucumber and bell pepper and add to the bowl. Tear lettuce into manageable pieces and add to bowl. Toss all veg together before dressing. Drizzle oil over the salad. Squeeze lemons over salad. I generally end up using 1.5 lemons for a full head of lettuce, but do it to taste. It should be bright and lemony. Generously salt and very generously pepper the salad and toss everything together. Taste a piece of lettuce. Add more lemon, oil, salt or pepper as needed.   Hey! Give us a call and tell us something awesome! There are many famous places all around the world and they're usually a reason to be proud of. Not in Barcelona! It turns out that the local mayor forced the organisation responsible for the construction on Sagrada Familia to pay an enormous amount of money as a fine for building the church without a permit. Millions of tourists coming to the city and visiting the place with all the money they leave seem not to be enough for Ada Colau, the mayor. Let's listen to the newest episode. The first episode is about my greatgreatgreat grandfather's library which was exceptional. Poland didn't exist at that time as an independent state (it was 19. century) but the culture was so strong, that my ancestors who came to the region of Galicja quickly started feeling Polish, picked up the language. Two generations later, one of them, Andrew Reichard, despite the German surname was killed in a German concentration camp just because he was Polish. This episode, however, is about Andrzej's grandfather - Franz or Franciszek. He was one of the first of Reichards family who came to Galicja. When I learnt about his stunning book collection, I immediately understood where my book addiction comes from!Check out the full transcript of this episode, vocabulary, grammar and other respources on my blog! https://wp.me/p4D8ou-SyIf you like my podcast, support me on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/ioannesoculusMusic used in the podcast:"The Show Must Be Go" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/This is a podcast for people learning Polish. Cook up the entire package of bacon. Reserve bacon to garnish and save bacon grease. Put a few tablespoons of bacon fat in a large soup pot. Sauté the diced onion, chopped garlic, chopped sage and toss in the rosemary sprigs whole. Cook with a generous pinch of salt till the onions are soft and you can really smell the herbs. Add the chicken stock and pumpkin. Whisk till it’s smooth and incorporated. Add salt and pepper and the cayenne, rubbed sage and paprika. Add the pressed/grated garlic. Bring to a simmer and let the flavors marry, this will take about 20-30 minutes. Keep tasting and adjusting seasoning. Remove the rosemary. Working in batches, purée the hot soup in a blender. Only fill the blender half full and vent the top/cover with a kitchen towel to prevent the steam from building up. Once everything is puréed, return it to the pot (that you should rinse first!). Heat the puréed soup on medium low heat. Add the heavy cream and cook till heated through. Meanwhile, fry the whole sage leaves in the oil of your choice till they are crisp.   Happy 4th of July, Americans! And happy July 4th, rest of the world! Whether you're celebrating or not, it's always a good day for potato salad, cole slaw, pasta salad and hamburgers. So join us for a summertime picnic, complete with punch for all ages and alllllll of our many opinions on picnic foods. Picnic Punch (You in the Face) 1 small watermelon cut into small chunks 1 English cucumber 3 1/2 cups water 1 cup sugar 1 small bunch fresh mint  1 cup lemon juice Vodka Juice the watermelon and cucumber separately in a juicer or blend in a blender and strain out the pulp. Keep separate.  Combine water, sugar and mint in a sauce pan and heat over medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Let sit until cool. Remove mint. Combine watermelon juice in a pitcher with sugar water and lemon juice. Chill along with cucumber juice in fridge until cold. To serve, pour watermelon mixture in a glass over ice (add vodka for grown ups!) then add about an ounce of cucumber juice, pouring slowly so the cucumber juice floats on top.   Liz Harvatine's Strongly Held Pasta Salad Opinions Cook one lb short cut pasta (preferably something curly with a lot of ridges. I like to use multicolor pasta) in very salty water until al dente, about a minute shy of the recommended cooking time on the package. As soon as it’s cooked, strain it and run cold water over until it’s cool. Chop up your veggies, meat and cheese into bite sized pieces and put them in a very large bowl. The key to this recipe is to add A LOT of stuff. There should be more stuff than pasta. This is what I like to use:   One persian cucumber One bell pepper One can of black olives A lot of tomatoes, preferably grape or cherry halved but a couple big tomatoes diced is good too 4 scallions One 8 oz salami, like the kind you would serve with cheese Cheese! Prob 8 oz - a pound. Little balls of fresh mozzarella or big balls cut up, feta is good, mild cheddar cubed. Whatever you like! Handful of flat leaf parsley, finely chopped You can’t go wrong with more veggies so add as much as you want! Add the pasta and mix in a couple spoonfuls of mayonnaise, some kosher salt and black pepper. Start with just a little salt and add more if you need it. As for the mayo, you don’t need much. You want everything to be coated but not dripping. Start with two spoonfuls, mix it well and taste it. Add more if you think it needs it. You can also add a splash of cider vinegar or red wine vinegar but really mayo is all you need. I will serve it without chilling if it’s dinner time but I have never given a second thought to eating it cold right out of the fridge. It’s really good that way! I hate leftovers but I will eat this for breakfast.   Liz's Favorite Cole Slaw Well Done Burgers that aren't Terrible   Theme song: The Show Must Be Go Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

Heather and her friends created the ultimate Reuben sandwich and she is here to tell us all about her pastrami making journey and see if she can impart a little wisdom. We’ll also talk about how Liz’s Disney costumes turned out and whether or not Liz’s mom consents to being internet pickle famous. The Baconator (part deux) 1 tsp maple syrup 2 dashes Angostura Bitters 2 oz bacon bourbon (recipe below) 1 inch long piece of orange peel 2 maraschino cherries 1 piece maple candied bacon (recipe below) In an old-fashioned glass filled with ice, combine maple syrup, bitters,  and bacon bourbon. Squeeze orange peel over glass and add. Stir until drink is cold. Add cherries and garnish with bacon. Bacon Bourbon 1/4 cup bacon fat, hot enough that it is liquid 750 mL bottle of bourbon Remove 1/4 cup bourbon from bottle and save for another day. Or drink it right now, I don't care. Pour bacon fat into bottle and put cap back on. Gently shake the bottle to combine. Allow the bourbon to sit out at room temperature for about four hours, shaking occasionally. You want to keep the fat from solidifying in a big clump too soon. Put the bottle in the fridge and chill for 3 - 7 days. Strain the bourbon through paper coffee filters and it's ready to drink! Maple Candied Bacon Thick cut bacon black pepper brown sugar maple syrup Heat oven to 375*. Lay bacon slices on a baking rack in a rimmed baking sheet, lined with parchment paper or a silpat liner (for easy clean up.) Sprinkle bacon with black pepper and brown sugar. You don't need to use much sugar because too much will just melt off. Back for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and brush with maple syrup.
