Mental Health Professional, Children's Book Author, and more My guest for Episode #177 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Emily Learing, LMFT, RPT-S. She is a mental health professional based in South Dakota, at her practice called Encompass Mental Health. Episode page with links, video, transcript, and more Emily has an MA in Marriage and Family Therapy and a BS in Human Development and Family Studies. She's a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Registered Play Therapist. She has a blog called Disciplined Children. Emily is the author of a fantastic children's book: Henry Knows Best!: A Story About Learning From Mistakes and Listening to Others. I read it and found important lessons and reminders for me as an adult. In this episode, Emily tells her favorite mistake story about setting up a child care center that was intended to attend to mental health needs — but the phone rang off the hook with people wanting and needing typical day care services. Why did she close the door to that program and how did that open the door to other possibilities? How did Emily manage to keep this in the realm of a small mistake that wasn't catastrophically expensive? We also talk about questions and topics including: Tell us what inspired you to write the book? Again, the title is Henry Knows Best!: A Story About Learning From Mistakes and Listening to Others Oppositional Defiance Disorder vs just liking to say no? How many kids are like Henry? The consequences of always knowing best – damaged relationships? Overconfidence vs. narcissism “If you think you need help, you probably need help…” Some of my previous guests have admitted that they didn't listen to experts when they should have — that they knew best… Congressman Will Hurd and Jim McCann founder of 1-800-FLOWERS. You say “I'm not a perfect person… I make mistakes… I don't expect perfection… that's not reality” — how does admitting that help clients, how does it help you work with clients? Does it help others open up to you? Having to live the values you're stating about not being perfect… Being a play therapist On your blog, you write about games that can be used to help kids with ADHD develop their attention spans. Tell us about that… Tell us more about the podcast… “The Informed Parent” (coming soon) A BONUS favorite mistake from Emily --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/favorite-mistake/support

For what it's worth: it's never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There's no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you're proud of. If you find that you're not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again.” ― Eric Roth, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button You can start anew at any given moment. Life is just the passage of time and it's up to you to pass it as you please.” ― Charlotte Eriksson, You're Doing Just Fine When we dive into something new we have to be willing to push through that tough beginning part when we are so consciously bad at whatever we are trying. The past decade I have purposely thrown myself into new situations to learn new things and this concept of being a freshman really helped me. So many people are proud of things they did once, a long time ago but once they become adults and professionals they are afraid of “looking stupid” or feeling awkward. Guess what! You, and I, and everyone is ignorant of more things than we are competent at. If you are not comfortable being a freshman then you are stuck at whatever level of knowledge you have until you check out. Or you'll just keep adding micro levels of new information to what you already know or can do. Boring. People have told me they could Never do improv and just make up conversation. I remind them that they just made up that whole sentence without any prior rehearsal. Others tell me they are incapable of learning a language and I point out they they are doing just fine with English though they didn't know a word when they were born. Life has a way of making us freshman anyway. Each new stage of life throws us into things we've never done before. Each emergency makes us do things we've never done before. Throwing ourselves into the discomfort of conscious incompetence and then working towards some level of competence or even mastery builds those muscles and confidence for when life throw things at us…as this pandemic has illustrated so well. Think about things you can do now that you couldn't do a year ago. Maybe you mastered video conferencing or have become more of teacher for you kids as they worked at home along side you! What is normal for you now that you hadn't done a year ago? Congrats! I'm writing this because I find myself a freshman once again with all the new things I'm learning with the book/podcast/blog project. I was scared to start my book. Scared I couldn't finish it. Scared no one would like it. I had so much anxiety about the first sessions I recorded my podcast. I prepared the best I could, got the best advice I could find, but eventually the first day of school arrived and I had to just do it. Last week I recorded my 9th episode and I was so thrilled at how much easier it was than the first ones. It's exciting because something I had never done 2 months ago is something I'm becoming more and more comfortable with. And that, boys and girls, is fun. We are going to be living in this weird covidy world for a big part of this year. The post-covid world is going to be different. What do you want for yourself in that world. What do you want to be, have, do? Make a list and begin. Now. Enjoy the awkwardness of being really bad at something and enjoy the process of learning. Learing about a subject or diving into just learning more about yourself. The time will pass either way. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/carlopodcast/support

Absolute BS! There are no better there are no worse, there is only those who do, an those who sorta do, and then those who fake it! So one of my biggest lesson on this last ancient session I was on, was so so simple that it actually shook something in my core, the saying IT IS THE SIMPLE THINGS, rang very true. So remember it is the Simple Things. I was the last one in line on our hike the "old timer" the man who has had the ancient knowledge passed down to him in his line of lineage, stopped me at the trail head and said "You Are Ready". Ok so I trust, that is all. I trust. No clue what he means, what we are doing, what the plan is. I get asked to take off my shoes and my shirt. Simple as pie. Then we commence on the hike in quiet and alone as everyone else speed along. The things I learned in silence, and saw while everyone speed past....Amazing and priceless.

In this podcast, Beth and Jenn discuss some of the theory behind why pre-adolescents and adolescents act as they do. These explanations are shared in plain English so that parents, teachers, child/adolescent providers, and teens themselves can understand adolescent theory. This is the first episode in a series of podcasts that will explain specific methods for communicating and teaching adolescents. One of the main problems of adolescence is that at the very time when the pre-teen/teen craves independence, parents panic. Until this time, most parents and children enjoyed a more free-flowing sharing relationship. It is scary to parents when their children who were once forthcoming, clam up. Unfortunately, this is exactly what is healthy for teens as they need to test their families values against those of their peers. Further, they need to create their own identity. Again, by testing their idea of self against those in their peer/teacher/coach world. Many teenage upsets stem from these very struggles. Do not worry- we have some fairly easy strategies that can effectively help you and your teen to grow closer during these years.

Learning to Love You More av konstnärerna Miranda July och Harrel Fletcher i Los Angeles och The Museum of Broken Relationships av Olinka Vištica and Draen Grubišic i Zagreb. Learing to love you more är en sajt med 70 uppdrag som vem som helst kan göra. Till exempel: Miranda July gjorde senare långfilmen You and me and everyone I know och skrev novellsamlingen No one belongs here more than you. The museum of broken relationships är en europeisk släkting.
