The Podcast about building a Podcast Company. The final episode yet to be recordedÂ
There's a podcast studio less than 5 kilometres from here charging 50% more than us for the same service It's time to align ourselves with the market. This is session in progress After searching around to other studios or having used their spaces before we found our own I thought I had aligned our studio hire cost with the market while knowing we over delivered compared to them all. Let's look at our costsEquipment: $10,000 worth of cameras $5,000 worth of lenses $2000 sound mixer $4,000 in microphones $1000 video mixer $1000 in studio lighting To rent that alone from a store very close to here. For the day it would cost you over $1,000 So what do you think a one hour Video Podcast Studio hire is worth? At the end of the last episode I revealed I've had to delete an episode off our YouTube and LinkedIn page. That was because I can no longer say our studio has been designed by the incredibly talented individual who helped us get this far. No bad blood. Just not enough money to afford the finishes she had selected. We are still bringing to life the studio in their vision and I would say 85% of the finishes she chose it's just the dining table design which is the feature piece of the room was to be customer designed and the quotes I got back were $20,000! Now you probably might be thinking the same as me when I got that through “absolutely not” that's ridiculous but after some reflecting, and going with a pre made $2000 choice elsewhere, I also think those design choices are why they are a pro working for the most famous design house in the world and we are not. Let's talk about it! You might have heard in previous episode Studio White Noise pressure tested my “brand” From Your Pocket and showed gaping holes in the business' language, output and presence. What did we mean to someone who clicked on our website? How did we make our clients feel about being associated with us? I knew it was time for a refresh… but until now we haven't told you it was time for a rebrand! Seeing is believing… or is it?… What if I told you what you're watching isn't in a podcast studio! And no this isn't a plug in from AI on a green screen. This is SESSION in PROGRESS The studio you are seeing, and would have seen in the past through any and all of our content, is a make shift podcast space here at ''The Commons' in Collingwood. It's actually a boardroom, a big one, capable of fitting up to 20 people comfortably and we have had some clients utilise that. When we moved in we recognised there were two angles that were beautiful! Textured walls and a feature light with plant on one side, sheer curtain with natural light adding dimension and depth to the second shot. The thing about this space is… we share it. All fellow members in any of 'The Commons' across the country can book this room using credits gained through their monthly membership top ups or purchasing extras. We are really lucky in that 70% of the time a client wants to record its available, but that 30% is business going elsewhere. Until now! I'm not proud of the business It took 2 years and a wonderful design company to make me realise it. Today you hear the moment it all clicked. This is SESSION in PROGRESS On the last episode with our friends Ross, Lauren and Andreas from 'Studio White Noise' the reason for our chat was to help me, and maybe you, understand what it means to have a brand, the power of a considered one and to pressure test mine 'From Your Pocket' as you'll hear in this episode we crumble like a chocolate bar. This conversation was recorded back in January on the 17th. Here's me telling the three founders of Studio White Noise one of my biggest flaws with the branding of this company. When From Your Pocket “launched” and I use that term loosely as there was no media release, party, or email send out, it was an Instagram post off my personal account in collaboration with a new and very confused business page. I got straight to work and never really spent time identifying what it was as a brand, past its name and its logo, which I created on canva off a sketch I made on a notepad. If you were to ask me in 2022 and 2023 what a “brand was” I would have said its something exclusively for large corps that have marketing budgets and large staff. It matters to the coca colas of the world not your corner store and Melbourne based podcast companies. I was wrong. I was neglecting a massive part of starting a business - having a consistent brand identity that was easy to understand, made perfect sense for the service and was harmonious across it's language, aesthetic and messaging. So what is From Your Pocket? – up until this episode and catch up with the masters of brand ‘Studio White Noise' I didn't even realise I didn't know. In the past 3 months I've realised what I believe to be my biggest mistake in starting a podcast company. It's a mistake I made when I first realised I wanted to leave my on-air radio job and create a company with no business experience… today I'm revealing it to help save the next small business owner It isn't what you're expecting This is SESSION in PROGRESS A few episodes ago I spoke about the solopreneur which is when you run your business by yourself. Technically that's not me as I have a full-time producer Amelia who you've met on a previous episode and a couple of high level production legends who shall remain anonymous because their big radio jobs probably don't want them having side hustles. BUT We haven't spoken about Solo Founder vs Founding team. Till now We post the videos to each episode with captions on our LinkedIn page https://www.linkedin.com/company/session-in-progress We also have an Instagram page where something big is coming and will be announced their first https://www.instagram.com/session.in.progress/ Give us a follow and stay tunedSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
When you leave a full-time role to start your own business or company you have a true belief that you create your own hours. That hasn't been my experience. The more our quality of work has been seen in the Podcast marketplace the busier we've gotten which is fantastic but there are problems with that. I can't say no to the work because I need the cash flow to fund the business BUT by taking on that work I need to be here more hours of the day and a lot of the time out of hours. Running a business as a solo founder is turning out I might have bitten off more than I can chew
I've never been comfortable with the word entrepreneur. Oxford defines it as "A person who sets up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit." Profit wasn't, and isn't, my goal. I just love making meaningful conversations and I realised after spending tens of thousands of hours perfecting that skill as a job behind a microphone. I had just found out a new way of helping Bering that out of others and monetising . I couldn't believe it… Subject of the email: “Remarkable Insights Podcast Brief” Body: We've included the list of deliverables as well as the tasks that we were hoping would be managed by an external, experienced Podcast Producer (like yourself). That said, we are absolutely open to your suggestions regarding the best way that we could work together to bring this podcast to life! I scrolled right down to the bottom ignoring any and all work expectations, asset delivery, timelines, pre-production, post production… till I got the near end of the email. Budget. The lights went off in my head. There was a market for bringing other people's podcasts to life. On the second episode I mentioned I had 5 things going for me when starting this business. The first and most important being the love and support of my now fiancé Emily. But two years on does that same support exist or are there some cracks in the foundation? I'm risking everything to pursue my passion with the Start Up and that sacrifice isn't my own it's also the worn on the shoulders of my partner Emily who is here for this episode. Tuesday 6th September 2022 My partner Emily, who we will hear from on the next episode, had given me an A3 leather-bound business diary with my initials on it. I started writing on the very first page, that much I know. I hadn't read it in 18 months. Hand on my heart this is the first time I've looked back on this moment. I remember where I wrote it though, sitting in the hotel reception at Crown Towers in Melbourne about to head into a client's morning event. My stomach was in knots. It felt like I was stuck to the couch. Like I had to pay the toll for financial ignorance. This is SESSION in PROGRESS Follow the journey as it happens in real time. Two years on and reliving the moments of this episode I feel like an idiot! Knowing what I know now, which still isn't as much as I should but I'm always learning, I wish I could go back to 2022 and help guide the path past the mistakes (plural) that I made. HOWEVER, I also know that had I not made those mistakes we wouldn't be where we are now. That's not to say we are in the clear, there is still turbulence around my runway, but I feel more confident in taking risks that I've at least forecast the outcomes of. In 2022 after signing two large sponsorship partnerships I thought I could rinse and repeat the same strategy and have consistent income from selling our two podcasts while creating two more in the background. I was wrong. SESSION in PROGRESS Follow the journey as it happens in real time. This story's ending is yet to be written and recorded. At the end of 2021 I quit my 6 figure, once dream job of working on Radio heard across the country… to start a business. A podcast business. This is a podcast about starting that podcast business… SESSION in PROGRESS This series is inspired by 'Start Up' the story of Gimlet Media told through the voice of Alex Blumberg. Alex's podcast being a huge success as he chronicled the rise of his Podcast Company to its acquisition by Spotify for a reported 200 million dollars. Alex and I have uncanny similarities Both come from extensive radio and production backgrounds Both Fathers Both knew/know nothing about business Both had dreams of changing the landscape of video/audio I listen to the 'Start Up 'podcast to give me hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel, that I'm not crazy for thinking I have the ability to move the meter with my knowledge and skills, and that there is a need and want, more than ever, to tell real stories in a world of artificial lives and technology.
