Method 2: If you are reading an email and want to delete it, flick up or down to, “Trash”. Single finger double tap. You will then be placed in the next email message, opened and ready to read. Note: When deleting from an opened email, the app will open the next email automatically. You may or not want desire this action of auto-opening. How to delete multiple emails quickly: Open your Mail App with a single-finger double-tap, then flick right and select the account where you wish to delete emails, i.e. Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo, etc. - single-finger double-tap. Then flick to the right and perform a single-finger double-tap on the Edit button. This will activate  a Select button. Single-finger double-tap on “Select All”, and proceed to step 3 below. If you do not wish to delete all of your mail messages, flick right and select  each email you wish to delete with a single-finger double-tap. Voiceover will say “selected” for each item you select..  At the bottom of the screen, single-finger double-tap on “Trash” or “Archive” to delete the selected messages. Retrieving Deleted email messages: After opening your Mail app with a single-finger double-tap, flick right until you reach your “Trash folder. This is where your deleted messages have been placed.  Flick right into the list of messages and select those which you wish to retrieve by performing a single-finger double-tap. When all have been selected, perform a 4-finger single-tap towards the bottom of your screen. Flick left with one finger until you reach “Move”, then single-finger double-tap. You will then be placed on the “back” button at the top of your screen. Flick right until you reach “Inbox”. Single-finger double-tap and the messages you have selected will be moved there.  You can verify this by flicking right into your list of messages in the “Inbox” to find they are no longer there.  Stay tuned for more installments in this new iPhone101 series, “Managing email Messages and Accounts”, when we explore how to delete entire accounts from your device,  and add both existing and new email accounts to your iDevice. A podcast to answer all your questions about productivity, time management, self-development and goal planning. My name is Carl Pullein and I am your host for this show. I've received quite a lot of questions over the last few weeks about feeling stressed out and overwhelmed. Not just the occasional feeling, but a general, constant feeling of having too much to do and not enough time to do it.  If this state lasts too long it can turn into something very bad, so it is important to recognise it and take action. Nobody wants to be depressed or experience a breakdown. Fortunately, if you do recognise the signs, you can do something about it.  Now, before we get into this week's question, I'd like to remind you that we are now almost at the halfway point of November. We have around three weeks left to brainstorm ideas about what you would like to do next year.  If you haven't already downloaded my FREE annual Planning Template, you can do so from my downloads page on my website. carlpullein.com/downloads. This is a wonderful time of year to evaluate what you did, and didn't do and what you would like to change and do next year.  Okay. Time to welcome back the Mystery Podcast voice for this week's question. This week's question comes from Tom. Tom asks: hi Carl, every day I feel stressed out and feel helpless when I look at my to-do list. There is so much on there and I know I cannot get it all done. It feels like every day the list gets longer, not shorter and I am at my wits end about what to do. Can you help?  Hi Tom, thank you for your question and I am sorry you feel the way you do.  The first thing I am going to do is tell you to step back. You are going to fight me and tell me you don't have time to step back, but I can promise you this is the only way you will regain some control and get on top of that to-do list.  You cannot go on doing what you are doing right now. If you do not step back, take a breath and spend some time going through that list, you are going to find your feelings of stress will continue to climb and that is not going to lead anywhere nice.  So, stop for a morning at the very least. Or if you can, take the next weekend, gather up everything in your to-do list and hide yourself away for two days while you get on top of what you need to do.  What this is going to do is to put a stop to new things coming in. You need this to breathe and to take stock of where you are with everything. Next up, do a run through your task manager and delete any task you do not need to do. You will find there will be a lot of these. We have a habit of throwing stuff in there that we would “like” to do but don't need to do. We need to clear these out.  In the past, I've suggested people move these tasks to their notes app as a single note, but I realised this does not fix the problem. It only moves things from one place to another. Instead, I find if we delete these tasks, if they are important at some future date they will come back up on your radar and you can re-add them to your list.  Doing this pass through on our task manager will clear around 25% of what's in there. You'll also find a lot of tasks that are well past their due date and completed tasks. We need to eliminate these. Watch out for those emails you have been meaning to respond to for over a month. Sorry, but it's too late. Delete these. Seriously, if you haven't responded for over a month, it's going to look very unprofessional to reply now. What does that say about your priorities?  I should tell you I've had people do this and they've removed well over 50% of their tasks. That brings a huge sense of relief.  Next up we are going to have to do some thinking. What are you actually employed to do? This relates to your core work. The work you are evaluated on and are paid for.  This needs to take priority in the short term. We must reengage with what we are paid to do, and that means we need to remove the work that we have volunteered for. I know this can be difficult because we will feel we are letting others down. But you have to remember, you don't have time to do all this stuff. Something's got to go and unless you want to lose your job, the first place to look is at is the stuff you have volunteered for.  Any committees you've allowed yourself to be on, any outside work commitments such as parent/teacher associations or community projects. If you want to get your life back, start to feel more in control of what you are doing each day, then these have to go.  Now for the next six months, you only allow yourself to focus on your core work. Do not allow yourself to be pulled into anything else.  This, by the way, also applied to those of you who are self-employed. You have core work too. What is that work? Make sure you strip away anything additional to that core work. You don't have to do this forever, but we do need to do a reset to get things back on track.  If you are self-employed, one of the things you can do is look into employing a virtual assistant to deal with the admin. Admin can very quickly build up and take a disproportionate amount of time to deal with. Your talents and time need to be spent elsewhere.  Now, once you have taken these first two steps you will start to see some light at the end of your task manager. You will have not only slimmed down your task manager, you will also have freed up some time.  The next step is to re-establish what is important to you. Often when we get bogged down with tasks, we lose sight of what is important to us. We often think family and friends will always be there when we need them, and while that may be true, to some extent, the last thing you need right now is problems in your relationships.  Likewise, your health and fitness need to be taken care of. Neglect that and you'll no longer have the energy required to do a great job, be there for your family and if your health fails, your task manager and everything else no longer matters.  With health and fitness, you don't have to be going out for a run or join a gym. All you need do is move. Humans are designed for movement and when we move we improve our overall mood. We feel less stressed and a lot happier. So make sure you are moving. Take walks at lunchtime and after dinner. Get up and walk around for ten minutes or so between periods of focused work. And the best thing… Always take the stairs. Never take escalators or lifts (elevators for my American friends) Escalators and lifts are the enemies of your health and fitness.  Okay now you have taken these steps, it's time to turn to your calendar. With all the remaining work you have to do, the question is: when are you going to do it? Now, this is likely to be dictated to us by time sensitivity. What's due next? Do that.  Time blocking is a great way to make sure you have sufficient time to get your work done. However, all too often people misunderstand what time blocking is. It is not micromanaging your time each day. Elon Musk might do that, but most people do not need to do it.  What time-blocking means is you look for gaps in your calendar you can block off to do focused work. That means working on the projects or tasks that MUST be done. For me, that usually means two to four hours per day for focused work. And, while I have meetings and calls each day, I can usually find those two to four hours no problem.  One way to do this is to block out 9 to 11 am for your focused work. I've found that to be the best time. You are still mentally fresh and it's a lot easier to focus when you are mentally fresh. This means, where possible, you avoid meetings and other commitments at that time. Turn off email and notifications on your phone and computer and focus. Don't worry, nobody will be upset with you if you do not reply for an hour or two. If you think they will try it out. If they get upset explain what you were doing and why it is important you do it.  Now, the only thing you need to think about is what you will get done this week. Next week does not matter today. You might need to prepare for a meeting or a presentation next week, but this week that's all you need to find time for; preparation.  The final piece of this fix is to commit right here and now to do a weekly planning session at the end of the week. You need time each week to stop, look at what needs doing and plan when you will do it. As long as you are doing these weekly planning sessions, the only things you need to concern yourself with are the things that need doing this week. Next week can be taken care of when you do the planning session.  Taking these steps, Tom will go a long way to putting you back in charge of your tasks and commitments. Once you know what you need to do this week, just do one thing at a time, take a break then start the next thing. With that focus, you will soon find yourself feeling a lot less stressed.  Now, of course, if your work is causing you stress not because of the volume but because you are unhappy at work or you have a bad boss, that's a different thing altogether. I would still recommend stepping back and looking at that and then thinking about what you could do to change things. Perhaps you could get a transfer to another department with another boss, or maybe you need to search for another job. Only you can decide that though.  I hope that helps, Tom and thank you for your question.  And thank you for listening too. It just remains for me now to wish you all a very very productive week.

Welcome back to the Scale Your Small Business Podcast with your host, Jillian Flodstrom. Today, we're diving back into the Scale Your Small Business process. In this episode, we're taking on the second pillar within the nine fundamental steps to scale your business: evaluation and assessment.    Often times business owners overlook the not-so-pretty stuff. You may be go-go-go and not take the time to pause, catalog, and inventory what's going down with your business. The phrase “you have to slow down to speed up” rings true here. If you're not taking that time, one, you're putting yourself at risk if anything happens to your business. And two, you won't have a fundamental understanding of the baseline of your business, which makes it hard to scale. The reality is you don't know what best practices are across every aspect of your business. By taking time to pause and look at your current systems, you're going to be able to close all those gaps.   This week's exercise is a systems inventory audit. Take every system in your business--CRM, email systems, Google accounts--and give them a closer look. Is something missing? Does something need to change? Add anything? Delete anything? This is an opportunity for you to look at everything and see what you've got. Are you currently using it? Do you need to get rid of it or do you just need to remind yourself and start using it? Don't make this more complicated than it needs to be. Just write down everything that you're currently using as you go about your day-to-day over this week.   From there, shoot Jillian a message with any questions you have and we'll answer it on next week's Q&A episode! Key Takeaways   You have to slow down to speed up The reality is you don't know what best practices are across every aspect of your business. Take a systems inventory audit of every system that you use in your day-to-day and find out what needs to stay, go, or change.

How to Know When It's Time to Hire with Richard Lindner and Jeff Mask

Ready to Lead

Hiring a new person is serious business, and there are some really important questions to ask yourself as a leader before you take that step.   In this episode, hosts Richard Lindner and Jeff Mask walk through some really vital steps we need to take before we bring someone else on our team. In Richard's company, they have a saying that reflects an important value:    We take the social responsibility of hiring very seriously. What does that mean? It means that, when they make the decision to hire someone, it's more than an exchange of time for money. It's not a pair of jeans at Nordstrom's. It's a human. They have other humans relying on them. And hiring should only be done after much care and consideration.   Listen in for some great advice on making these key hiring decisions as a leader.   Taking the Social Responsibility of Hiring Very Seriously When Richard's company is considering hiring someone new, they do what they call “work journaling” for a bit first. They ask questions like: What are we doing? How are we spending our time? Is the leader hoarding something that should be passed down? What percentage of my day is spent on things I should be doing? What percentage of my day is spent on things I should be delegating?   And they follow these three basic rules of thumb:   We don't throw people at inefficiencies We don't throw people at “we've always done it that way”  We don't throw people at seasonality   Each of these things leads to unnecessary hires. That's bad for the leader, the company, and the person you hired. Why don't they throw people at these things? Because they take the social responsibility of hiring very seriously. When we're in the most pain we're most likely to throw a warm body at a problem. Don't hire people in your emotional state. Step back and assess first.    You Can Never Make Enough Lists If someone requests additional help doing their job, make some lists. What the leader is doing, what everyone on the team is doing, what the person requesting additional help is doing. Go back to that critical task list—Do, Defer, Delegate, Delete. For the person asking for another hire, ask: Do you have the time to do all of this? Are we following a documented process? Is it efficient? What can we automate?   When you ask those questions (about how you're spending your time, etc.), you can figure out if you actually need to hire someone, or if you just need to make some other changes. What if you get really efficient with your time two weeks after you hire a new person? Don't hire for seasonal work unless you're advertising for a short-term, temporary, seasonal hire. If people don't know they're being hired temporarily, don't hire them temporarily.   These are the processes you have to go through so you can be socially responsible when you hire. We as leaders can get frustrated and impatient. Once again, all problems are leadership problems. We have to take this responsibility very seriously.   Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself There are a few things Richard and Jeff encourage you to be aware of and think about as you're considering hiring.   There are people who are empire builders who like to build a large team of people underneath them. You need to look in the mirror to know yourself. Are you an empire builder? Does success for you look like the number of employees you have? Do you have a ton of employees but your company isn't profitable?   Vanity metrics are things that look and feel great but ultimately don't drive to the end result we're looking for. A million subscribers but no engagement. A huge email list but not a good open rate. A boatload of employees but not comparable profitability.   Richard says he won't bring on a person unnecessarily, because the profitability of his company will go down, and he's endangering his whole team. The goal of the company is profitability, making money. You need to know what profitability looks like and whether or not a new hire will bring you more of that.   Jeff says to run through the 3 Ps (people, profit, purpose). Who are the people who can generate the profit to ultimately fulfill the purpose? You need all 3 legs of the stool. The right people, the right profit, your right purpose. It's a sustainable model.   Necessity drives invention and innovation, but we need self-discipline to be as efficient as possible, to be wise stewards of what we've been given. Do the work beforehand. Make sure you actually need another team member before you add them.   If someone on your team asks you to hire someone, Richard says you can say, “Great, let's talk about it. At this company, we take the social responsibility of hiring people very seriously. We have a process to walk through first. First thing, brain dump, work journal. Then categorize all your tasks (4 Ds). Make sure we have processes and automation in place. If we go through all this and still think we need the person, great. Let's do it!   The next episode is a micro-episode about Who to Hire. Stay tuned!   Richard and Jeff want to hear from YOU. What questions do you have about hiring? How to Get Control of that Voice Inside your Head

Breakthrough Babe Podcast

Did you know that something you live with every day has the power to impact your ability to perform and your ability to create the outcomes you desire?   In fact, it's not just you - it's something everyone around you is dealing with too. And it's something that, when left unmanaged, can really wreak havoc on your progress in both your business and your life overall. Care to take a guess as to what I'm referring to?   It's the negative voice inside your head.    Now, I don't often talk about the voice inside my head. But, I'd like to be incredibly transparent with you because this voice is a major contributing factor in our eventual success… or failure.    Ever since I got control of that voice in my head, truly amazing (dare I say, magical) things have transpired in my life and business. And I want the same to happen for YOU. How often do you hear the negative voice? How often are you consciously aware of it?   Meet your Negative Voice: This is the voice that is responsible for creating the self doubt you experience. It breeds uncertainty, fear, and overwhelm. It's the voice that says you're not organized enough. You're not good enough. You're not successful enough. You're not rich enough. You're not worthy enough. It's the voice telling you that maybe you should just give up.    Sound familiar? I'm pretty sure you know what I'm talking about.    Don't you just wish that negative thoughts could be handled like a typo on a keyboard? If only you could just press the DELETE button. You know, just backspace over that crap and move on. Unfortunately, as simple as that sounds, you can't really do that with those negative thoughts inside your head. They have to be handled a bit differently.  The first step is becoming aware of when negative thoughts are happening.    When I first started to become aware of my negative voice, I decided I'd name her. I call her, “Jerky.” And let me tell you, when Jerky comes out to play, she's not messing around.    Jerky has stopped me from doing plenty of productive things over the years. Most recently, I realized it had been Jerky all along that had gotten in the way of me launching the online networking community I'd been dreaming about.    If you've been following me on Instagram, you know I just recently launched my new venture, CEO Club. While it's only just launched, I have been thinking about this for a long time (it just didn't have a name yet). I knew I wanted to launch an online networking group where I could get great people together in a space where they could meet each other, support each other, help each other grow, and create connections for each other. And the thing is, I already knew exactly how to do it because I'd done it successfully before. But Jerky got in the way for years. She told me all the reasons why it couldn't happen - and I believed her.    But guess what I've learned? I get to control Jerky.  The great news: You get to control that voice inside your head, too.    Think about it like Spotify, where you pull up a playlist and a song comes on. If you like the song, you end up dancing along and it's all fun and good. It's propelling you forward, and it's creating the atmosphere that you want. But, then a song comes on that you don't want. Because it's Spotify, all you have to do is hit the NEXT button. Then, you're right back to the upbeat mood you'd cultivated just minutes before. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to do that with your thoughts?   You can. This is what controlling your mindset is all about. You need to create the self-discipline where when that negative voice begins to creep in, you can hit that NEXT button. You can change the way you listen to that voice to the point that you can literally tune it out.    Now, I realize this isn't easy. It's something that happens over time. Your negative thoughts didn't happen in a day, so you can't expect them to just disappear in one day. But with time and awareness, you can create better outcomes by creating better thoughts.    Where to start:   Begin by creating awareness around your thoughts. Stop being a passive listener and get active. Journal about what's going on in your head. Read what you're writing, and get tuned in to what your inner voice is telling you.   Then, it's time to analyze those thoughts; it's time to question the source of those thoughts; and it's time to challenge those thoughts.    What are these thoughts preventing you from achieving? What are they holding you back from doing?    Remember: our limiting beliefs start out as thoughts, then they become the stories that we tell ourselves over and over again, and then they become beliefs that we identify with. We must first tune into them to be able to tune them out.   Tuning in, tuning out   You get to decide how high or low the volume on that tune (thought) is going to be. Is it going to be tuned so high that it prevents you from doing the things you want to do? Or is it going to be tuned down so low that those negative thoughts aren't even a part of your frequency?   It's time that they're not even a part of your vibration, that they're not even something that you're putting out there into the universe.    When you tune into the negative and your focus is on the negative, guess what? It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, because that's what your focus is. You get stuck in a web of negativity.    But, if you tune into the positive and your focus is on the positive, that, too, becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.    When we begin to question the source of our negative thoughts, we can then recognize where they came from. When we see what they're rooted in and how they're no longer serving us, it becomes far easier to shake them off. From there, we can create positive affirmations and positive thoughts to replace them with. It takes practice and it takes time, but little by little, you begin to shift how your inner voice speaks to you.  Lately, I have been so tuned into this higher frequency that the synchronicities have been insane. Situation after situation, I've wished for something and before I know it, I've manifested it. And I am certain this is because of some of the things in my life that I have intentionally changed such as my desire to tune out that negative vibration. Where once negative thoughts got in my way, now that I've said I'm done with them, they're done holding me back.    And guess what? You can change your tune as well. Powerful shifts can happen in your business and life too. It all starts in your head. If you want my help... If you're tired of self-doubt, uncertainty, and fear stifling your progress, you can work with me, one-on-one. It's often easier (not to mention faster) to have an external coach help you recognize the thoughts in motion. I can give you a process by which you can turn down or tune out the negative thoughts + vibrations, and really tune into your own positive, self-fulfilling prophecy.  If that sounds appealing to you, feel free to reach out. This is also something we do together monthly in my coaching group calls. You can check out that program here.

The Relationship Between Burnout and Impostor Syndrome and How to Battle Both with Richard Lindner and Jeff Mask

Ready to Lead

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 19, 2021 43:00

If you're experiencing burnout and/or impostor syndrome, there are some practical things you can do to get your energy back so you can lead powerfully.   Burnout is a pattern that's happening globally right now. People are stressed, tired, anxious, and it feels like the marathon has no end. In this episode, co-hosts Richard Lindner and Jeff Mask validate this burnout you're experiencing, explain how it causes impostor syndrome to rear its ugly head, and share some exercises you can do to refresh and re-engage.   Three Levels of Burnout   Leaders have to deal with burnout. Period. First, there's internal burnout. You're feeling it as a leader. Richard says impostor syndrome always builds when he's burned out. “I'm not capable, I don't have the skills to handle this.” He's been feeling some of that embarrassment, shame, and fear lately, and he thinks this is a great time to talk about it.   Then there's burnout in the people you're in charge of leading. How do you know when to push them to do their best and when/how to give them a break?   Then what about when your leader/manager is experiencing burnout? If the person at the top doesn't deal with it effectively, they push it down on everyone else. It's cascading.   At least one of those levels is relevant to every leader on the planet right now, especially in these times.   Two Things You Have to Do   We're in a season of funkiness and ambiguity right now. The more we label it as weird/difficult, the more we'll flounder. We have to accept it, learn to be cool with it. It's not going back to “normal.” We have a choice of how we'll respond to it. This isn't about putting a happy face on it; it's about changing your mindset.   Acknowledge it Change your mindset   What opportunities are available now that wouldn't have been available before? New, unique, and trying times are where character is truly developed, where our best selves can show up.    Dig deeper into changing your mindset. Get a piece of paper, draw a line down the middle, and make two columns. On the left side, write down everything that's frustrating you right now. There's power getting it out of your head. Write down the crap, get it out, no filters. Let it sit, look at it, meditate on it, accept it. Then prioritize it. Weight it. Which things are affecting/frustrating you the most right now?   On the right side of the paper, flip it. Ask yourself these questions:    Is there any good in this situation?  Am I learning anything?  Growing?  Getting stronger?  Increasing in humility?  What can I be grateful for in that crap list?   Then look at those two columns, and ask yourself, “How am I going to choose to respond?” We totally have a choice how we respond to any situation, regardless of how difficult it is.   Richard says this exercise works, that Jeff has walked him through it before. Getting it out of our head and onto paper is so powerful. “Embrace the suck,” he says. Acknowledge it. Feel your feelings. How you react to that emotion is where the positive/negative comes in. We get to choose. But it takes reps.   Go Back to Your Why   Some other things you can do: ask, “have I already solved this problem in the past?” Ask: “Is this a season?” Sometimes we need to just stick it out. Acknowledge that the pain alleviation is coming, but it has to run its course. Maybe there's nothing you can do but wait it out for three more weeks.   Maybe there's no end in sight. Then what do we do? Say, “I don't know when this will end, but I'm going to keep going.” We're always talking to ourselves, so we might as well say positive things, or we'll keep feeding ourselves negative self-talk and stories. Stop those tapes, erase them, and replace them with something more powerful and positive.   This is where step #3 comes in. Step #1: acknowledge it. Step #2: Change your mindset. Step #3: Remember your why. Go back to your individual purpose. Why do you exist on this planet? Then think about the purpose of your company. Dig deep and determine it. If you believe in a higher power, spend time there. If you believe in being in nature, get out in it and get your mind clear. What are your gifts? What energizes you? What activities drain you? When we lose our why, we lose our way.   Start With a Brain Dump If You Need To   Richard gets super honest at this point and says, “When I hear this and I'm in burnout, I think, just stop for the love of all that is holy. I have a to-do list 10 miles long and you want me to figure out my why?”   For the record, he believes everything Jeff is saying. He knows it's true. But he still can't start there. His brain doesn't work that way. When he's in burnout, the last thing he wants to do is pontificate, get introspective. “You don't understand,” he's thinking. “I'm stupid busy.”    This is how he buys himself the focus to go through Jeff's process, because he knows it's impactful. It starts with a to-do list, a task list. His brain is a computer, and there are too many tabs open. He has to get out of that, before he can deal with the why.   Richards likes to start with a brain dump on a whiteboard. He writes out every single thing he's doing, needs to do, everything that's in his brain, no categorization. He's even been known to use two whiteboards.   Jeff talked about a brain dump for emotions, and Richard's is everything he has to do. When you see the overwhelm in physical form, you think, “Oh, of course I'm overwhelmed by all I have to do and think about,” and you can breathe in a sense of relief.    The next step is to categorize. Not into home/work, because work/life integration is important, but a grid with four quadrants: Do, Defer, Delegate, Delete. Then you plot everything on the whiteboard into these four areas.    Now you're left with a couple of boxes to focus on. You cut it down to 15-20% of your To Do List that you should actually be doing. Look at that “Do” box and get a quick win for momentum to spark your confidence. Richard believes in two big forces in life—momentum and resistance. See: Steven Pressfield's books, The War of Art and Do the Work.   Do What Works For YOU   Jeff loves that he and Richard shared two different approaches that work for them individually. There's no one right way to lead—or to deal with burnout. You can do it the way that's most authentically yours. That's the beauty of marrying emotion and logic. That's why Jeff and Richard are doing this podcast together. They want to connect with all kinds of leaders around the world with different personalities and ways of looking at problems.    As leaders, it's so important to admit our weaknesses and ask for help when we need it. From a coach, family member, peer, counselor, therapist. It's critical that we as leaders have our hearts and minds right. We can't lead others if we can't lead ourselves.   If you continue to feel the burnout, stop the cycle. Acknowledge it. Validate it. Work on your mindset. Ask for help. Go deeper on your purpose. Change the cycle. The burnout happens when we stay on the hamster wheel with no end in sight.   If you don't learn how to stop and breathe and take a break, it will never get better. Take some space. Know what energizes you, fills you up. Do some of them. Keep your battery charged. Once you've gotten yourself to a place of stability, once you've gotten your own oxygen mask on, you can keep serving and helping your people.   Richard and Jeff want to hear from YOU. What other practices have you discovered that help with burnout? What other questions do you have about burnout? Did they share anything you thought was off the mark? Startup Selling: Talking Sales with Scott Sambucci

One of the biggest sales mistakes most startups, especially ones selling enterprise solutions and targeting Above-the-Line executives make, is that they don't focus on their prospect's PRIORITIES.    Instead, most startups make their outreach and pitches all about their PRODUCT –   “Hi NAME – I'm contacting you because I would like to give you further information about our product called _____…”   or   "Hi NAME – Our company has a blah-blah platform that does feature this and feature this... Would you like to see a demo?"   Ugh. Delete.   Occasionally I'll see messaging that's PROBLEM–focused –   "Hi NAME – Even with a great sales team, there's a good chance you're hurting your growth if your blah-blah-blah is anything less than optimal..."   A little better, but even that isn't nearly good enough if you want to sell to ABL executives.   Executives get paid the big bucks because their job is to lead their company's strategic initiatives.    When they step into the office every day, they're focused on their PRIORITIES – not the day-to-day problems that crop up.   They have people down the chain that are paid to handle the fires.    And they definitely don't care about your product (even if it's AI or Blockchain or automates something or other...).   It's your job as a seller to know these priorities and show how you can help those executives get where they want to go.   Listen & subscribe to The Startup Selling Show here:   BluBrry | Deezer | Amazon | Stitcher | Spotify | iTunes | Soundcloud | SalesQualia   Thanks so much for listening!
