Hey, thanks for being here. In this second episode of 2024, my guest is the wonderful Tommy Boynton, who you might know as a solo performer, a member of The Four Freshmen, The River Monks, The Mimzees, Jinnouchi Power, or any number of other pursuits as a musician. He's also extremely passionate about teaching music, and we talk a bit about that here. I felt bad about having to call this conversation a little early, but we still ended up having almost a full hour of it for you. I'm definitely looking forward to the possibility of a part two! Pat's back! This time we had a pretty long chat in the basement studio of Squayne Manor about Patrick's new McKenna Alise album, Stranded, which is the first of four scheduled to come out this year. We also chat about Neutral Milk Hotel, how we met, and horrifying children's cartoons, and much more. I forgot to mention in my "recent shows" section of the intro that I went to the Cartoon Smokers release show, which was also this past month and was also a blast. Hear Stranded and much more at https://mckennaalise.bandcamp.com/ Check out my Patreon and lots of music here: https://linktr.ee/fjcochran --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/strpodcast/message
We're back, and Ryan Stier of Extravision is back with us! Ryan and I chatted about two weeks after the release of the new album, Temporary Fountain. We talked about the album, evolving relationships with your parents, Hot Ones, tour stories, and so much more! The conversation starts at 16:12. Good morning, good evening, good afternoon, whatever applies when you're listening to this! I think we're coming out the gate of 2022 strong here with Andrew Jones, talking about the new Zap Tura album, Ataptasia, among other things. This was a really fun conversation not only about Andrew's work in particular, but also some fun philosophical talk about some music concepts, including folks who over-simplify the magic. I've taken down the Featured Songs playlist because nobody was subscribed to it, and frankly I think you should just buy everything that's discussed on this podcast from the artists. I need to get better at recording intros to these things! New Year's resolution, I guess. Jordan Mayland is a super-productive singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, teacher, and advocate for music in central Iowa. You are likely to have seen him with Tires, Volcano Boys, Nuclear Rodeo, The Wheelers, Keepers of the Carpet, or with his band The Thermal Detonators, among others. He started as the Program Coordinator for the Des Moines Music Coalition in 2019, and hosted In The Birdroom, a podcast similar to this one, for two years. He and I also used to be mistaken for each other a lot. I had him over to my new home on the south side of Des Moines to drink beers and talk about many of these things, as well as his most recent release, The Plan, on November 11th. This was a really fun conversation, and we could have talked for hours longer, but we hit a lot of the big stuff here. We're doing something a little different here. Improvising. A little podcast jazz, if you will. Since Nick and I were talking about all these moments in the process of recording, it truly seemed more appropriate to just use clips from the album. Since we deviated from the usual format, I'm skipping adding songs to the "Featured on Straightening the Record" playlist this month. Instead, just check out my music if you haven't already! https://open.spotify.com/artist/3smVtfof1X5V3up42qa1Ww?si=Kg7ZHtUeQrGkQKWzROA5Iw&dl_branch=1 Hopefully we'll be back with a normal interview where I talk a lot less next month! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/strpodcast/message

We're back to our usual format this month with Annalibera's Anna Gebhardt and Caleb Swank-Ferrara. Annalibera has been a local favorite of mine since the early days, when they had a dreamy, post-rock inspired sound. Over the years Anna has never failed to impress, whether the presentation was a solo performance on keyboard or a full band featuring many other talented Iowa musicians, including previous STR guests Ryan Stier and Brooks Strause. We talk here about the project's ever-changing sound, the loveil tape and accompanying short film, and what's next for them. Boy, I sure like, say "like" a bunch in this one. I must be a millennial! This time around our guests are Nicholas Frampton and Evelyn Taylor, aka Field Division. They are Iowans who started playing together in Nashville, moved to Colorado, back to Iowa, and now call Denton, Texas home. We chatted over Skype on January 23rd about their songwriting and arranging process from their first EP to now, as well as philosophical ideals like time and peace, whether inner peace or world peace. Due to technical issues, most of our two-hour conversation had to be trimmed down, but we still have a lot of good stuff in here, and it really was a pleasure to chat with them as always. We're starting 2021 off strong with eastern Iowa's wizardlike singer-songwriter Brooks Strause. You might know this guest from his work as part of the backing bands for Matt Woods or Stutterin' Jimmy, or you might just know him (as I do) as my dad. Some of my earliest experiences being interested in music were because of my dad's influence, so even though there were a handful of artists who I didn't get to this year, I felt a strong attachment to the idea of closing out this season with him. It's my show, after all. In this episode we discuss my dad's beginnings as a musician, the distinction between "rock n roll" and "rock," and the idea of being unique within the framework of a long-established genre. While there are a couple of takes here that might seem closed-minded, everyone is a product of their time, so just know that in this episode you're going to hear perspectives from someone who came up in the era of rock n roll, blues, bebop, and before there was even such a thing as pop-country. Next year I'm excited to talk to more local musicians of all genres and go outside of Iowa even more. I have some ideas in the way of more well-known independent artists who might be open to talking to me, so please stick with me on this journey. I also want to plug my new Patreon here (www.patreon.com/forestcochran), where I will post new episodes early, bonus podcast content, and stuff from my bands and my production work with other artists. The songs featured in this episode aren't available on streaming platforms, so instead I added my dad's songs "Fox In The Henhouse" and "Moonshine and Chloroform" from last year's Stutterin' Jimmy album to the Featured on... Here's a little distraction for your election-week blues! We're here for you with a throwback to almost 6 months ago! Back in May I still felt like I was just figuring this thing out, but I was excited. I had just gotten my new recording gear, and I decided since I knew for a fact that my friend Courtney had a modest home recording setup of her own, she might be an excellent candidate for this show because conversation always comes easily between the two of us, we could talk over the phone and have it come out sounding good, and I definitely wanted to talk to her about songwriting. As you listen to this episode, you will undoubtedly feel her totally inviting and accepting nature, and by the end you'll get the sassy post-vodka side of Courtney that not everyone gets to see, but I absolutely consider a treat. Follow Courtney on IG for updates on new music, personal goofiness, and info on racial justice. Here's the most recent "show" Courtney played with our mutual friend Ben: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBgO4-I7Mn0&ab_channel=MaxAmesMusicFest Courtney's official website: https://www.courtneykrausemusic.com/ Or check out the newly updated "Featured on Straightening the Record" playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1l4FySDWQyuMDrTSfjSmHq?si=1LM1l9eCSgSqP61bZgdQhw --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/strpodcast/message

Hooo boy. It's been a few months since one of these has come out, and it's probably not hard to guess why, but I still feel a little embarrassed about claiming to have a consistent release schedule back in May and then sitting on a couple of episodes for so long. BUT we are back with an interview that I recorded with Steven Bergeron and Kamillah Jonae, who make up the amazing "cinematic soul pop" group Ancient Posse. This conversation was recorded in mid-June, right smack dab between the murder of George Floyd and my departure for an extended stay in Portland, where I worked on music with some fellow Iowans who have been living there long enough to be Oregonians. This episode was deeply cathartic for both myself and my guests because, as you hear us discuss at the beginning, the three of us have all been taking the pandemic very seriously and they have been especially isolated, having just moved from Brooklyn to Marcellus, New York. This was also a special one because Ancient Posse were supposed to be my very first guests on the podcast, back when all I had was a Blue mic and a laptop. Our original interview took place in November of 2017, if I remember correctly, but was never actually recorded because I didn't notice the "mute" light on the mic being on. This was embarrassing, but Steven and Kamillah were both very gracious and understanding, and agreed to come back to talk about their full-length album Wuttalyfe, their two new singles, which bookend this episode, what it means to be pop, and much more. Stream or download Ancient Posse's music at https://ancientposse.bandcamp.com/ Check out their music videos here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8LqmDqfa9Pjs8NUJBm6O6w Listen to every song featured on STR in the ever-growing playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1l4FySDWQyuMDrTSfjSmHq?si=cW539rLZTYKe8zXugmDvwQ If you like the show, please share with your friends, subscribe, rate, and all that good stuff.
