SISTER RAY, the project of Edmonton-born songwriter Ella Coyes, was conceived out of necessity; a self-designed vehicle built to examine trauma with unflinching honesty. Armed with a voice that soars and scrapes in equal measure, Coyes converts first-person recollections of big, complicated love into universally potent allegories. Raised on the expansive prairies of Sturgeon County, Sister Ray's music is steeped in a wide range of cultural influences. With gospel bluegrass and 90's country playing in the background of their youth, it was the traditional Métis music played at home that not only brought them closer to their heritage, but taught them a form of storytelling rooted in collective value, resilience, and safety. Communion, the 2022 debut album by Sister Ray, is a raw, meticulously-crafted portrait of momentous, ordinary moments; experiences that define your past, and instruct how you move through the world. Quickly met with critical acclaim, the album was longlisted for the 2022 Polaris Prize, and Pitchfork deemed it “a complex study of webs of interpersonal hurt, and a celebration of emotional survival.” They have been featured on Audiotree, Paste, NPR, and more, along with appearances at Pitchfork Festival in Paris & London, Primavera Weekender, and headline and support dates across North America and Europe.Teeth, their new EP on Royal Mountain Records, came from a need for space and the repercussions conditional to this desire. “I was thinking often about intimacy and avoidance—crawling around to find where my place would be,” Coyes says. The songs were written quickly and vigorously, mimicked through the recording process, crafted by Coyes over five days, recruiting Ginla ( the Brooklyn based duo behind Communion and early Adrienne Lenker) as collaborators and producers. With three originals and a spectral cover of “I Never Will Marry,” inspired by Linda Ronstadt's interpretation, Coyes discerns big and small epiphanies in Teeth. Their yearning tone and staggering honesty trickles throughout and the erosion leads to an opening—vacant, unfamiliar, and with room to breathe.  Thanks for listening!!! Join us for this episode where Phillip and David are joined by Jamie Jacobsen of Tedious & Brief, who's music and convo is certainly not the former, and you won't want it to be the latter. As is typical for the artists we bring on, Tedious & Brief's music is hard to categorize.  They refer to it as "crispy jams" and we love their synth pop sensibilities with clever and genuine lyrics that are extremely relatable.  But most of all, they just keep producing banger after banger since their original smash "Papercuts" back in 2019 (which we will share a tremendous live recording of from Musikfest 2022).Website: tediousandbriefmusic.comYouTube ChannelSpotify ChannelBandcamp - T&B Audiotree sessionsThank you so much to Audiotree for the amazing recordings of Tedious & Brief.  It was so great to share them!BioJamie Jacobsen is an indie pop songwriter who heads up the groovy, slickly produced project Tedious & Brief.  Jacobsen took up guitar and songwriting at a young age. She has mentioned her earliest influences include Stevie Ray Vaughn and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which has evolved into a more polished sound featuring airy synth elements and vocals akin to Maggie Rogers or Lorde. Her debut single “Papercuts”, set the mood for the rest of Tedious & Brief's debut self-titled EP.  They have also released a live album featuring their performance on Audiotree live and several singles, including “Not That Deep”, “Middle Class” and most recently “Tired Work”.Thank you to Carver Commodore, argonaut&wasp, and Blair Crimmins for allowing us to use their music in the show open and close. We had the pleasure of interviewing The Moss over Zoom video! The Moss has quickly earned a rapturous fanbase with their euphoric live show and the recent release of their Insomnia EP on S-Curve / Hollywood Records. Earning acclaim from Under The Radar, The Alternative, LADYGUNN, Earmilk, Atwood, Ones To Watch and much more, the band just wrapped up a nearly sold out western U.S. headline tour.Hailed for bringing their youthful exuberance and alternative-rock swagger to the studio and the stage, EP title track “Insomnia” has become a breakout single for the band following major support from key Alternative radio outlets which has led to their first Alternative radio chart debut. The song has just cracked the Alternative Radio Top 20 at #18 with over 7M streams and has landed on many new playlists including Spotify (ALT NOW), Apple (ALT CTRL) + Amazon Music (Alternative Hits). “Insomnia is a bittersweet song about passing the point in a relationship where you can't sleep at night when you are away from them,” says frontman Tyke James.Originating on the shores of Oahu as teenage buddies, Tyke James (vocals/guitar) and Addison Sharp (guitar) traded in beaches for the Great Salt Lake joining forces with Willie Fowler (drums) Caiden Jackson (bass) to form The Moss. The band's blazing success has landed them on a number of festivals this past year including Life Is Beautiful and The Festival at Sandpoint as well as landing on Pandora's Artists to Watch in 2023. Their unique blend of indie surf-pop, grunge-rock and '60s-blues quickly caught on as the band actively curated a community of inclusivity and environmentalism. No matter how listeners choose to interact with The Moss's music, the band just hopes they feel something. It's that kinetic relationship between band and audience that makes their live performances – including a pitch-perfect recent set for Audiotree – so compelling. “No matter what we do, we want to make sure the songs are fun to play live,” says Fowler. “We pride ourselves on being a band people want to see live.”We want to hear from you! These popular Danish punks tread the line between pop, indie- and skate-punk to create an infectious, energetic racket that it's hard not to love. They make short, fun songs that'll get stuck in your head. Forever Unclean opened 2022 by releasing their first full-length album Best, following a string of successful EPs. During the podcast, the band tell us how they've tried to create a record that encapsulates that one, unique moment in time, and how live recording in their own studio enabled them to do that. We discussed the logic and love behind their new album, their first meeting (in a skate park - this are skatepunk who actually skate!), and the current market for vinyl. We also discussed the Dive Dogs project - a high-quality online platform for streaming intimate live shows; their European answer to Audiotree or Bridge City Sessions.
