Stonefruit jobs in March and Autumn – Prune and Control Leafcurl

Saturday Morning with Jack Tame

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 16, 2024 6:19

Leafcurl on stone fruit: peaches, Nectarines, plums, peachcotts, peacherines, apricots, etc always a sad sight on the leaves – it manifests itself in Spring and Summer – after flowering.  The leaves become distorted and discoloured (pretty yellow and orange coloration); when infestations are serious the number of leaves that drop off can be substantial, causing a reduction in photosynthesis and hence the ability of the tree to “feed itself”.  In spring the answer to “cure?” it will always be: “You're too late!”… Right now, in late summer/Autumn you are still ahead of the 2024 infection game.  Taphrina deformans is the fungus that causes this leafcurl. Note how “deformans” is quite aptly chosen as a name, as it deforms the shape of the leaves quite obviously.  The disease becomes active at bud-break: when the leaves and flowers come out of the buds in spring. The spores of Taphrina deformans are already settled on those buds, making infection quite easy.  Those buds are initiated by the trees in autumn, which is just a few weeks away.  What to do?  First of all prune your stonefruit right now – after the last peaches, nectarines etc etc have been harvested, pruning can be done. Doing it this early has another advantage: you avoid bacterial diseases in the cooler months (late autumn/winter is a dodgy period for bacterial infections!)  Pruning now also reduces the amount of tree to spray in April.  Around mid April, when the leaves are falling off the deciduous stone fruit trees, the new buds for the next season are formed. Taphrina deformans will then be invading those new buds and overwinter on those buds to infect the trees again in spring.  First thing to do is to remove all fallen leaves from under the trees. That reduces infection chances.  Next thing is to apply a double dose of copper spray (copper oxychloride, liquid copper, or copper-sulphur mixtures, available form garden centres) on the remaining leaves and on the branches/twigs/buds of the tree.  Don't worry about “burning the rest of the leaves off: they were going to fall anyway.  Use a “sticker” if you can, to increase coverage and stickability  Do this again a few weeks later and ensure good coverage of all parts of the tree.  This autumn spray exercise is the most important preventative thing you can do to avoid Leaf curl.  If you still get some infected leaves in spring there is no point in spraying with copper fungicides as that will burn those leaves quite badly. Best thing to do is to remove and get rid of infected leaves as much as you can – especially fallen leaves. “Getting rid of them” does not mean COMPOSTING them!!  Fertilising the tree in spring allows it to make new leaves and get some resistance to the infection, especially when you use Seaweed Tea and such marine-originated liquid fertilisers.  During the period when fruits grow and expand, check for fallen leaves that show signs of leafcurl, and get rid of them. REMEMBER “Getting rid of them” does not mean COMPOSTING them!!  Autumn is the time to start controlling leafcurl on stonefruit for the next fruiting season:  Some people use Lime sulphur; that's OK too as a winter clean-up; seeing the trees are getting to dormancy this Lime Sulphur won't harm the leaves either; but I think that lime may not be a great material for apricots as it has the ability to raise the pH levels.  A last smack of Copper spray before budburst should “mop up” the last surviving spores before the flowering and fruiting season begins again. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For the past two decades, farmers in the Niagara Region have taken the issue of water scarcity into their own hands. Even though the region is surrounded by Lake Ontario, the Welland Canal, Niagara River and Lake Erie, getting water to tender fruit and grapes has always been a challenge and climate change is only exacerbating the problem. The Niagara Peninsula produces over 90 per cent of Ontario's tender fruit and according to local farmers and politicians, that could be at risk if investments in irrigation infrastructure are not taken seriously. To purchase her book visit www.thetinypublisher.com/shop. Bus Stop Story The first thing I notice is the fine line of beard outlining his strong chin up to the side of his shiny bald pate. He walks restlessly, rubbing a forefinger along his left temple. Next to me another man poses the usual bus stop questions: Has the Number 50 come? You been waiting long? You work around here? The sound! The sound! Searing right through me it starts like a hum then goes higher, louder, from ah ah ah ah to AYE AYE AYE AYE, the man with the fine line beard flails his arms like a bird ready to soar, whirls and whirls then falls into the street like a boulder tumbling down the side of a mountain. The questioner and I rush to him. Still flailing, his right hand clenches my left wrist like a crushing vise. We turn them over on their sides now, the questioner says calmly, his cigarette dangling from his matter-of-fact mouth, no more putting sticks in their mouths to hold down the tongue. As we roll the man onto his side, his hand drops heavily from mine, his huge shaking body becomes quiet. I've called the paramedics someone else says, they'll be here soon, and with that, the chartreuse truck rolls up and medics step out, into their official roles. The Number 50 arrives and I climb aboard. The questioner remains with the epileptic. I can't shake the sound or the feel of his grip. A few weeks later, the man with the fine line beard is back at my stop. I rub my left wrist. Our eyes do not meet.   NECTARINES IT'S A HECKUVA FRUIT! Juicy warm, broiled with goat cheese and honey, a must to bring my dad just to hear him laugh, recite again from his favorite Carl-Reiner-Mel Brooks recording, with the 2000-year-old man, velvet caped and gravelly voiced, who reveals he once dated Joan of Arc, married hundreds of times, had 42,000 children and not one came to visit!   I don't care. But they could send a note, write, “Howya, Pop!   True, Dad didn't date Joan of Arc, but he did date Pearl, his memories kept in the thick album Of Kodak black and whites with curvy edges slotted Into triangle black corner holders pasted on dull Cream pages, captioned, “Me and Pearl!” or, “Pearl And Me” or, my favorite, “Guess Who?”   That Mom had no compunction about this totem Of his life before us said a lot about their marriage ‘til death did part them. My stepmother helped Dad buy a new suit and tie to meet Pearl and her husband for lunch following her surprise call. You know what happened. Civil conversation. The ride home longer than to the restaurant, the scrapbook returned to the shelf. Dad didn't even reach a century much less two millennia yet to the end, smiled to see another fuzz-less peach, sweet nectar of summer, its smooth skin not unlike Dad's with its signature blush of red.   I still miss our calls.   What's the secret to your long life? Reiner asks. Nectarines! I love that fruit. It's a heckuva fruit!   Get your copy of Sonia Iris Lozada's new book: Inspire Me Series Book 1 and 2

Chronique des Matières Premières

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 3, 2021 1:45

Household preparedness can be as simple as resprouting the trimmings from store-bought produce for a continuous harvest (see Mother Earth News note). Tread Perilously's "Too Many Kids!" month continues with the pilot episode of Eight is Enough -- also known as "Never Try Eating Nectarines Since Juice May Dispense." Tom Bradford is an editor at a Sacramento, California newspaper. He is also the father of eight children. Oldest son David (Mark Hamill!) wants to move out of the house while youngest daughter Elizabeth gets busted for possession and obstruction. Youngest son Nicholas is getting ready for a tonsillectomy while Tom tries to figure out how he's going to pay for all his unexpected expenses. It's the sort of thing that happens when you have too many kids. Justin hates the fact he now knows about the mneomic device Tom uses the remember his kids' names. He also points out the tendency for "Too Many Kids!" shows to offer the oldest son a break-out role. It leads to a discussion of Family Ties and properly regulated businesses. Erik recalls entirely too much of Eight is Enough and equates Aaron Sorkin to Christopher Marlowe. The presence of Mark Hamill proves to be a major distraction, especially as David Bradford and Luke Skywalker are experiencing the same emotional journey in 1977. Performances get rated, Will Aames gets mentioned, and the pair pitch Jessica Chastain as the director of a Mara Jade trilogy.

Today we're talking about FRUIT! Our first fruity question comes from Tessa, she would like to know, where do fruits come from? To answer Tessa's fab question we have Sir Tim Smit who built the amazing Eden Project and restored an incredible, wild, botanical garden called The Lost Gardens of Heligan. They are both in Cornwall and incredible places to visit so make sure you go one day! Tim knows all about trees, plants, nature and fruit, so he's the perfect person to tell us all about where fruit comes from! Next up is a spicy question from Blaise, who asks why are chillies so spicy and hot and what is the hottest chilli called?Find out all about what makes chillies spicy, the scale we use to measure them and which is the hottest one! Lastly, we chat about nectarines and answer Alice's question, do nectarines have nectar in them? What do you think? Find out in this week's show! A huge thank you the wonderful Sir Tim Smit for talking to us about fruits and of course a big thank you to Alice, Blaise and Tessa for this week's questions! I'll be back next week answering more questions from children around the world in another episode of Everything Under The Sun. Do send in your questions, there's info about how to do that on the show's website, everythingunderthesun.co.uk. Make sure you subscribe to the show whenever you get your podcast to be the first to listen to each new episode! If you like the show please do rate and leave a review and tell all your friends to have a listen - it really does help! I hope you have a lovely week eating lots of delicious fruit! Especially strawberries, nectarines and maybe some chilli! Thank you and GOODBYE!
