Les, Kurt, and Jason are back with another episode and Les and Jason are happy to find out that Kurt has finally seen Wicked… until he shares his less than favorable opinion of the movie. Then, the Blac Chyna Report turns into a theology lesson… which itself turns into a deep dive into the #FreeWendyWilliams movement. Then, it's time to get Trapped in the Spotlight, a Lifetime movie that Jason believes is the dumbest movie they've ever watched for the podcast (and he loved it). In addition to the long-overdue return of chloroform, this movie has perfect hairstyle that Les may start rocking soon, and an architectural design that disregards the sound design needs of a recording studio in favor of lots of reflective glass and places to chain people up. If you're a fan of hidden messages that can can be easily seen in plain sight, then fire up your Microsoft Zune before Kurt gets cancelled. In this episode of Join the Docs, Professor Jonathan Sackier and Dr. Nigel Guest dive into the surprisingly hilarious and sometimes cringe-worthy history and evolution of anaesthesia, affectionately dubbed "the surgeon's best buddy." The Docs take us on a wild ride from the days when biting a bullet was considered a viable pain relief method to the sophisticated modern techniques involving sedatives, analgesics, and muscle relaxants that we rely on today. With their signature blend of wit and wisdom, The Docs ensure that even the squeamish will be laughing along, making this episode a real gas.Who knew that the journey to painless surgery could be so entertaining? The episode shines a spotlight on key historical figures like Sir James Simpson, the brave soul who decided that inhaling chloroform might be a breath of fresh air—and lived to tell the tale! His pioneering work paved the way for the development of specialised anaesthetists, those unsung heroes who ensure that we can snooze through surgeries without a care in the world. It's a real knockout!Have you ever imagined what it would be like to be a fly on the wall during the early days of anaesthesia experimentation? Through a series of laugh-out-loud stories, The Docs recount the often bizarre and occasionally disastrous attempts at pain relief before the advent of modern anaesthesia. From ancient herbal concoctions that were more likely to put you under permanently than temporarily, to the trial-and-error approach of early anaesthetists, the episode is a rollercoaster of historical hijinks. By the end, you'll have a newfound appreciation for the crucial role anaesthesia plays in making surgeries not just bearable, but downright dreamy. So, why is anaesthesia considered the unsung hero of the medical world? Jonathan and Nigel make it clear that without anaesthesia, the world of surgery would be a much scarier place. They emphasise how this miraculous medical advancement has transformed surgeries from nightmarish ordeals into routine procedures, all while keeping us in stitches—both literally and figuratively. Tune in for a dose of history, a dash of humour, and a whole lot of appreciation for the magic of anaesthesia. It's an episode that will leave you breathless with laughter and gratitude!—--DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed on Join the Docs are those of Dr. Nigel Guest, Jonathan Sackier and other people on our show. Calling All Cars 34-03-14 ep016 The Chloroform Murder
THE TRUE CRIME CASE THIS STORY IS BASED ON: In 1908, Sarah Koten, an unmarried immigrant nurse, took justice into her own hands after enduring a horrific crime. Dr. Martin Auspitz, her employer, had raped her, resulting in a pregnancy. When the courts and law enforcement failed to help her, Sarah lured Auspitz to an abandoned house and shot him dead. Her case quickly became a national sensation, with the press initially vilifying her as a hysterical woman. However, public perception shifted after she gave birth to her son in prison, with many viewing her as a victim defending her honor. Sarah's actions were ultimately justified by the courts on the grounds of temporary insanity, leading to her release. Her case inspired other women to retaliate against male aggression, symbolizing a broader fight for women's rights and self-defense during that era. Sarah Koten's story, however, ended with her disappearance from public life, aided by the Council of Jewish Women, who helped her start anew under a different identity.SOURCES…“It Was My Duty To Kill Him” by Troy Taylor: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/yckurad3Music provided by Alibi Music Library= = = = =(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. Polyglot, polymath, call Rhys Langston what you want—there's a lot going on. Multidisciplined and disciplinary LA mage Rhys Langston released a tightly wound and densely packed EP in Polyglot on Chloroform. It stuffs in as many ideas, scenes and bars as most double albums in a curt runtime. From the sludgy noir of "casino petit bourgeois” or the troubling soul of “still to this day,” Langston matches the fluttering, chameleonic production of Steeltipped Dove with grace. We talked with Rhys below.
James Simpson used scripture to silence critics against his use of anesthesia.

Jennifer and Miffie talk about the most egregious errors that show up in books and movies (provoking eye rolls from experts) and how more accurate scenes would result in better and less clichéd writing. We also discuss some notable oddities, such as psychedelic parenting, body packing, belladonna, and the real dangers of alcohol-related games. Thomas Neill Cream graduated with honors from Montreal's McGill medical school in 1876. His thesis had been about the effects of chloroform; and he would soon demonstrate just how devastating he could be with toxic compounds. Several people died under his 'care.' But we're not here to talk about Dr. Cream the murderer; we're here to talk about his other criminal offense: extortion. Thomas was ultimately undone when he attempted to frame and blackmail other people for his murders. Let's meet the doctor.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
