After a month of being sick and busy, we are BACK! And we've got our good friend/bandmate Anna Gebhardt (Annalibera, Ramona & the Sometimes, music lessons, etc) sitting in with us during naptime for special afternoon recording. We are reminiscing about high school band instruments, coming up with a name for Anna's music lesson school, and then we hop into some quizzing about the Grammys, the Mission Impossible film series, and more!Upcoming shows!-Ramona and the Sometimes at Mission Creek: https://missioncreekfestival.com/schedule/ramona-and-the-sometimes/-Annalibera at xBk: https://www.xbklive.com/events#/events?event_id=49183-Ramona and the Sometimes/The Book of Bugs Album Release show at xBk: https://www.xbklive.com/events#/events?event_id=51740-Preorder Ramona and the Sometimes new album, t-shirt, or The Book of Bugs new album: https://www.ramonamuselambert.com/artmerch/music
We're back to our usual format this month with Annalibera's Anna Gebhardt and Caleb Swank-Ferrara. Annalibera has been a local favorite of mine since the early days, when they had a dreamy, post-rock inspired sound. Over the years Anna has never failed to impress, whether the presentation was a solo performance on keyboard or a full band featuring many other talented Iowa musicians, including previous STR guests Ryan Stier and Brooks Strause. We talk here about the project's ever-changing sound, the loveil tape and accompanying short film, and what's next for them. Night Listeners -I feel like I have avoided playing tunes from Ames because I have always thought that the music from that city was extremely self indulgent. But I have come to love that about Ames. So tonight I got some new tunes from Stars Hollow. They do some loud emo pop stuff that some of you might enjoy. I also have two tunes from the new Traffic Death / Captain Three Leg split 12". One from each band that will rip your face right off.Iowa Basement Tapes has its own archive of Iowa music. Night Listeners -This is the podcast edition of Iowa Basement Tapes Broadcast #8 that aired on August 23rd, 2018 from 9PM to 10PM on 98.9FM KFMG. I don't think there could be a more diverse show tonight. We got a track off the brand new self-titled LP from Son of the Morning, Des Moines' newest doom occult band. From the ashes of The Horrors from Cedar Rapids comes CR Dicks(featuring both Andy Caffrey & Paul Cary). I also welcome Mr. Bruce Bales who is sort of the music video king of Iowa. He brings us his own playlist of tunes for us to check out including tracks from The Multiple Cat, Land of Blood and Sunshine, & Jack Lion. We also get a fun cameo from KFMG studio manager Gary Monte who chimes in with his history of eastern Iowa radio. The show closes out with a track off the newest Annalibera album, Opia. Ryan Stier is a seasoned singer/songwriter/guitarist. He fronts folk outfit The River Monks and also plays guitar in Annalibera and Seedlings. The Monks are on a steady climb having just released an Lp and embarked on a 7 week long tour. They've also had heavy video rotation on major outlets. We talk about it, as well as upcoming Annalibera plans, how he studied classical guitar in college, growing up midwest, his early influences as well as presently, early bands, hat choices, tour life, his passion for Iowa football, and a lot more.
Phil Young is a producer/engineer/musician who is making his mark all over the music scene whether it's producing records for many of the artists in the city and surrounding areas (Omens, Easy Fruit, Callen's Mudmen, Manits Pincers) or playing with the many bands he is associated with (Annalibera, Tires, The Wheelers, Satellite State, etc.). We jabber jaw about a variety of things including growing up in eastern Iowa, the pitfalls of music contracts, going to L.A. for music production school, his views on how he feels art should be created and cultivated, musical inspirations and aspirations, among a lot of other crap.

Anna Gebhardt is a songwriter, keyboardist, and the crystalline voice of Annalibera. She was gracious enough to take time out of her hectic schedule to dish about growing up in a rural Midwest setting, finding herself musically and personally, moving to the 515, starting a band, being hungry, love of podcasts, touring, recording, car dancing, handling pressure, being driven, crafting her art and sharing it with the rest of the world. Super duper fun!
