Southern Fiction comes alive in this episode of True Fiction Project as author Chris Skates shares the true story behind his novel Moonshine Over Georgia. Host Reenita Hora talks with Chris about his grandfather, a Prohibition-era revenue agent who hunted moonshiners through the Georgia woods, and how those family memories became historical fiction. Chris also reflects on his winding path from nuclear chemist to White House speechwriter, and how that unlikely mix shaped his storytelling voice. Tune in to hear Chris Skates read a gripping excerpt describing the violent aftermath of a real moonshine-related murder that shaped his book. What You'll Learn in This Episode: ✅ How Chris Skates turned decades of family stories about his grandfather's work as a revenue agent into the Southern Fiction novel Moonshine Over Georgia✅ Why real Prohibition-era moonshine busts in Georgia were far more dangerous and heartbreaking than the Hollywood version ever showed✅ How the notorious John Wallace murder case connects directly to the events depicted in this historical fiction story✅ How a career as a White House speechwriter helped Chris sharpen his fiction writing craft and finally finish the book he started decades earlierSubscribe to Reenita's Storytelling Den on Substack for free at https://substack.com/@reenitahora and to her YouTube channel to watch the video version of this episode! https://www.youtube.com/@reenymalCheck out her website to stay up-to-date on events, book releases and more! https://reenita.com/TIMESTAMPS:  00:00 Chris Skates explains how his grandfather's work as a revenue agent during the Prohibition Era inspired Moonshine Over Georgia05:16 The emotional childhood memory that first revealed the real toll of the moonshiners' trade on families09:00 How raids worked in the field and why the Southern fiction genre captures this history so vividly16:18 Chris teases the real-life connection to the John Wallace murder case made famous in an old TV movie22:09 Chris Skates reads a historical fiction excerpt from Moonshine Over Georgia depicting the case's violent turning pointKEY TAKEAWAYS:

In this segment of The Charlie James Show, host Charlie James interacts with several callers before delving into regional political updates. The show opens with a caller named Richard from Dallas, who calls in to predict an early arrival for cooler fall temperatures and discusses the legalities of moonshine distilling in North Carolina. Charlie corrects the caller's impression of home-distilling laws by clarifying federal ATF regulations and permit requirements. Another caller, Tim from Woodruff, humorously critiques Charlie's coverage of Senator Tom Tillis's new book. Charlie then moves on to review recent straw-poll numbers released by the South Carolina GOP regarding potential Senate primary contenders. Finally, the discussion pivots to heavy criticism of former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper. Charlie details a controversial 2021 COVID-era settlement agreement signed by Cooper's administration that led to the early release of thousands of state prison inmates—including violent offenders—and highlights the political fallout and public scrutiny surrounding the release records.

We started late and had a set cutoff time, so we stayed on topic, right?  Sigh. Yeah, you all know us better than that. Lots of questions about a strip club-brewery combo and what beers they might have on tap. We read Google reviews about said strip club. We gave a funeral send off to the Craft Parenting Podcast. Then almost 25 minute in...we finally get to talking about the past week's content. Kinda. TWP was full of rum. Drinking what's possibly British Royal Naval rum. Lake life not being complete without buckets of rum with Nerds sludge. Dispelling for the millionth time the outcry of seasonal creep. Gnome struck fear into his viewer's hearts by drinking out of a can. Moonshine is an RTD, not to be confused with an STD. There were some cool labels on the screen, and who's responsible for continuing the education of beer styles. The Cincy Brew Dads made it to Paradise! Contact Matt if you need your hairs did, he is now an expert at updos. How Paradise went from a TV repair shop to a brewery and taproom, including how they managed to get free labor out of their patrons in exchange for Christmas beers in July. The mood darkened dramatically when a difference in opinion about Belgia was exposed.  Bret was stuck in Nutty Putty cave so Mike had to handle Barstool Perspective on his own. He bemoaned false Caesar salads. Tilray continues to tank so we all get refunds, right??? He parlayed with pieces about upcoming court cases concerning home distilling and planes being confiscated for smuggled 6-packs. He listed yet another thing he hates, and he doesn't understand user submitted questions. On this week's Bourbon Community Roundtable, our panel is tackling two massive seismic shockwaves rattling the very foundation of the spirits world. We jump straight into the first major headline: the shocking closure of Moonshine University. We break down what losing a premier educational hub like the Stave & Thief Society means for the future of spirits education, and whether this shutdown is the ultimate canary in the coal mine for a slowing craft distillery boom. Then, we turn our attention to the absolute biggest story in spirits retail: distributor giant RNDC filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and winding down operations. We unpack the domino effect of major supplier exits, razor-thin middle-tier margins, and unpaid invoices, analyzing the devastating fallout for small craft brands fighting for local liquor store shelf space. Finally, we throw down over what this massive distributor consolidation actually means for the three-tier system—debating whether this crisis will finally force lawmakers to rethink direct-to-consumer (DTC) shipping laws, or if we're simply watching a maturing bourbon market undergo a painful, necessary contraction. Show Notes: The closure of Moonshine University: What losing a premier distilling school means for the spirits industry Assessing the value of bourbon certifications: Essential career springboard or mostly symbolic status? David Osman of IRF is joined by Ron William, the Founder of RW Advisory. In this podcast Ron assesses the underlying cyclical trends in the global financial markets and highlights those sectors and investment styles that should perform well during the remainder of this year from a structural and tactical perspective. ----more---- Ron then discusses the importance of his business cycle roadmap and what it implies for 2027. He says that this, in conjunction with the unfolding convergence of short-, medium- and long-term cycles in the next 5 – 6 years, indicates that we are in a prolonged late-cycle period of slower economic growth and inflation volatility due to potential energy, fiscal and geopolitical shocks. Ron discusses what this will likely mean for short term interest rates, long-term government bond yields and the yield curve in the US and elsewhere over the next 18 months, including the potential for a “generational regime shift”. Ron also explains what this means for world stock markets, with particular reference to the US and the AI investment theme. In addition, he discusses the outlook for the currency and commodity markets, highlighting the prospects the US dollar, gold and Bitcoin in both the near term and the longer term. Ron concludes by highlighting his high-conviction investment recommendations for his preferred markets, sectors and styles, as well as identifying the main risks that investors should watch out for.   Ron William is a market strategist with over 20 years of experience producing macro research, trading strategies and insightful non-consensus ideas for leading economic research and institutional firms. Ron is also a behavioural finance expert, trading psychologist and performance coach. RW Advisory specialises in blended, top-down, semi-discretionary analysis, driven by his cycles roadmap and by his proprietary timing models, which use both quantitative and qualitative techniques.

In this episode, I'm reunited with Boston's own Kier Byrnes of Kier Byrnes & The Kettle Burners. They've got a new EP out called “Moonshine & Other Spirits,” an absolutely amazing five-track collection of high-energy Americana music. Kier and I talk about the origin of this album, which all began at an off-the-grid moonshine distillery in New Hampshire (yes, that really happened). We go into the sound of the album, as well as the great guest musicians that worked with the band. Kier reflects on the band's 2025, which saw a Boston Music Award win, shows in Europe and of course, new music galore. This is part one of our talk, and be sure to check out the second episode, where we go into the business side of music. Closing this episode out is “My Baby's Happy,” one of songs from the EP. Want to know more? Visit https://www.kierbyrnes.com to check it all out!

Let's mix two of my favorite subjects today - music and whiskey - as I stop by Tommy Townsend's North Georgia distillery Grandaddy Mimms. As a musician, Tommy has many ties to Waylon Jennings, we'll chat about that (and there is a bonus episode with even more conversation around music, free for Patreon subscribers at patreon.com/whiskeylore ), and we'll talk about the development of the distillery, the use of two thumpers, the problem with high proof flavored moonshine, how moonshine and city hall got together, and Tommy with tap into plenty of stories. Enjoy this episode, that started out to be a Whiskey Flights episode, but we just had so much to talk about. Cheers! Drew

The investigation at Moonshine Bar & Grill continues as the team returns to one of Austin's most storied locations. What began as fragments and impressions now deepens, as previous findings are tested, challenged, and expanded. After documenting Moonshine through extensive interviews with owners, long-time staff, former employees, and contractors, clear patterns had emerged: unexplained footsteps near the upstairs offices, objects moving or breaking, sudden injuries, and presences tied to the patio, upstairs office, Kinfolk, and the Sunday House. When the psychic investigation began, each medium was kept blind and separate. Despite that, overlapping impressions surfaced. An aggressive male presence yelling “get out.” A darker energy moving between the patio and the Sunday House loft. An intelligent, non-threatening man with glasses connected to Kinfolk. And a new, unexpected element—a chaotic teenage boy believed to be responsible for many of the accidents reported in recent years. As the night unfolded, even more layers revealed themselves: a protective female presence near the office stairs, a shadowy figure watching from the Sunday House loft, and an Indigenous woman who appeared during a later session with imagery tied to protest, the Capitol, and a much more modern chapter of Austin's history.By the time the first night came to a close, the building was empty, the energy had shifted, and the most pressing questions remained unanswered. Were the psychics accurately tapping into the same experiences staff had described? Were they independently sensing the same presences? And was something still hiding, waiting to be understood? This episode picks up exactly where the investigation left off.EPISODE SPONSORS:AG1Go to drinkag1.com/nightowl  to get 3 FREE AG1 Travel Packs and 3 FREE AGZ Travel Packs plus FREE Vitamin D3+K2 and AG1 Welcome Kit with your first AG1 subscription order!BETTERHELPThe Night Owl is sponsored by BetterHelp.
