Young Composers & Improvisors Workshop
Well I started my piece with a simple melody. I started my simple melody by putting random notes everywhere. After I had to fix it and make a smooth, nice melody. The bass clarinet plays the main melody. I have the flute playing the chords and the violin and the bassoon and cello are playing a little melody but not the main melody. The trumpet comes in later and plays the chords. It was really hard at first to fit all of the notes to make a great smooth texture to my piece. Once I got it, It was easier to go on. I think it was really awesome that we got to make our own music and that people actually played them for us. We got to make our own pieces the ones that we always wanted.
It was difficult at the beginning but then I had to put a melody to fit with chords. My piece is called Red ferrari. I think that it makes sense that I am calling it that because I think my piece is fast and fun. I chose instruments that I thought would be fun and exciting! Some challenges that ocurred while working on my piece were making sure other people really liked it as well, making sure the melody was memorable, and that it sounded fun and like something I would write. I have really liked composing because you can make your own music so you know it will sound good to you. I have learned so many things but a few things are, how to make a memorable melody and what chords are and how to make them.
I started with a simple chord progression and built a melody that went with the chords. I wanted it to be faster paced than my last composition. Then I made a new chord progression that fit with my first one. My main instruments are flute, trumpet, and violin. These instruments sound best together to me. I also had to include parts for the bassoon, cello, and clarinet. I like the sound that the bassoon and cello make playing the background parts together, and I like the clarinet and flute combination. It is called Whistling Winds because there are a lot of wind instruments that sound like winds. I had a hard time making melodies that went over the bar line, but I think overall, I did okay with that. I had never composed music before, so it was really interesting to learn all the skills and tactics that real composers use, even in pop songs. I had no idea how long it took and how much work was put into composing a song.
I found chords that I liked the sound of and then I added a melody to fit. I made sure the chords sounded good together. The main instrument in my piece is the flute. I like the flute because it can play higher notes. I named my piece windy, windy, windy, windy, stringy, string because there are four wind instruments and two string instruments. I learned that you have to pay a lot of attention to the chords. And make sure there are not to many dissonances.
I started with a simple chord and I built chords that sounded good off of that first chord. I think the chords were F major, G major, C major then D minor. The flute and the clarinet share the main part throughout the whole piece. But, the violin will take over for about 8 measures in the middle of the piece. My piece is just a simple chord progression in the beginning and some melodies at the end. I had some challenges when I had to come up with a C part. I could just build a chord progression, but I chose to do a new melody. It has been very fun to compose music this year with Matt. I have learned how to put instruments together that sound good, and many other things.
I started with some chords that I thought sounded good together and then using those chords I made a melody that I liked and then added some more melodies that I liked to it. The flute, the clarinet, and the violin have the main parts and what they play is what I wanted to stand out. I chose my name because I thought that the way my melody works is like when you have to choose paths to go on when your outdoors. I think that the story of my piece is that the main melody has to go through other trails until he gets to the one he wants. A couple challenges I had was moving from one chord to the other to go over the bar line. I also had a little bit of trouble of how I was going to end my piece. What I have learned about composing music this year is that you have to be patient with it and it will turn out like you want it to.
I fit the melody with the chords. I also added more once I had the melody. the Clarinet and the flute have the main part. I named it Frosty road because I think that it sounds like it should be in a movie and it should be in the background. I think one of the challenges composing my piece was knowing that I was finished with my piece. I wondered if I should add any more or just stop.
I started my piece with the main melody. Then i added chords and the other elements to my piece like new instruments. The instruments that I have in my piece are violin, bassoon, flute, clarinet and cello. I wanted my piece to feel like it was going on in a short way. That is why I called it spring fling because I was going through spring very fast. A challenge i had was making my piece sound better with out the french horn. I have learned that making music is not only about what other people think but how it connects to you.
I started my piece by creating my main melody. After that, I added chords that fitted with my main melody. Then I just kept on adding new parts. The Bassoon and the Cello play the main part in my main melody. After the main melody, the Bassoon basically takes over. Then in my C part, the instruments kind of mix. I named my piece after my hamster, Truffle because whenever I listen to my piece, for some reason, it reminds me of him. A challenge that I had while composing my piece was when I had to add a background part to my C section. I couldn't think of any background melodies to add for a long time. Finally Matt helped me and I was able to complete my C section. This year, composing my own music has been extremely fun and interesting. Before fifth grade, I had never composed my own music before, so when I started composing my Fall composition, I was really excited. I have learned a lot while composing music. I've learned about consonances and dissonances. I've learned how to compose a melody that fits with chords and so on. Composing music this year has been a wonderful experience and I'm looking forward to composing more music next year.
I started with a chord progression and then added A melody. Then I started making the melodies and added chords and other things in the background. There really is no main Instrument in my piece. It is split up among all of them. The title of my piece is Dumbledore's Army. I think it tells the story of the final duel in Harry Potter between Voldemort and the death eaters, and Dumbledore's army and others.
When I started my piece it looked and sounded nothing like my piece does now. I made different melodies and made up a chord progression I moved things around, experimented with the melodies, and arranged the instruments. The trumpet, violin, clarinet, and the flute are the instruments that have the main roles. I named my piece Marching Band because it gives me the vibe of a marching band. It was challenging for me to make my piece have a theme and not just make it and name it, I had to make my piece sound like a marching band.I have learned that it takes a lot of patients and effort to make a piece sound like what you want it to sound like.
I started with the c chord and then repeated the melody in the G chord. it started with the brain and then escalated to just making sounds that spoke to me. I think the most important thing about the piece is that it goes from sweet to mysterious and that big and strong. it spoke to me like the music would fit the word falling so i made the name falling. One of the challenges was geting the sounds in my song that I liked. I have learned the music alphabet and I have learned about types of music that I like. It has been fun composing this year.
I started off with a melody and that melody helped me make chord tones. The flute has the main part. My piece tells a story about ups and downs and how you can overcome them. I had to change my background of my piece because it was taking over the main melody. I learned how to make dynamics through this process and how to make a melodic shape.
I started off with a melody that would flow with the entrance of my piece. It was mostly high and low. The important things about my piece are that I have a lot of high and low parts and melodies that act as rests. My main instrument is the clarinet and the flute. It was challenging to find the main melody of my piece because i knew that that was the structure so I had to make it fit and represent. It has been really fun to compose our own melodies because I feel that I get to make my own type of music and what i like.
I started writing this piece based on the classical and contemporary music of Igor Stravinsky and Frank Zappa. Throughout this process I struggled with making all of the parts cohesive and highlighting every instrument. This piece is not centered around one instrument, theme or key.
Started with a melody and tried to fit chords behind it. The violin has a big part in my piece. My piece is trying to tell the story of a journey. It was challenging to fit the chords into the melody. Composing music was really cool, I've learned a lot about chords and melodies.
I started with a chord progression and then added other notes and chords for the other instruments. Then I repeated the main melody but changed it a little bit every time. The flute plays my main melody. I had a little trouble deciding the what the main melody would be. I really liked composing our own music. I have learned a lot about chord progressions and adding dynamics to my piece.
When I was composing my piece I used chord progressions to help me. I also had to have background and a main melody. My piece's main melody is the clarinet, although the main melody changes sometimes throughout my piece. My piece also has fast notes. But the background has some half notes. A challenge I had composing my piece, was what I needed to do next. Like when I was composing my piece I couldn't think of what I needed to do for my A, B, and C section. I have learned a lot this year. Like Chord progressions, main melodies and background melodies.
I started with a chord progression and then I built my main melody off of those chords and then after a little bit I just composed and then I tried to make chords for those melodies for my last section I didn't do any chords I just composed it. The instruments that play the main melody are the clarinet and flute mainly but a lot of the other instruments play the melody as well. The title of my piece is Summer Day, I named it this because it seams pretty happy and then it gets to the minor part and that kind of makes it like a rainy day, It sounds a lot like a day full of weather. I really like composing because if I have a melody I just make up in my head randomly I can just put it down and then add other parts to it and then it sounds really good most of the time. It is fun for me.
I started by making a melody. My title means a fast piece. I had difficulty adding dynamics. I have learned about chords.
I started by playing around, and when I found a melody that I liked, I built off of that. Eventually, I got to a point where I felt like I was finished and so I ended there. I think the Flute and Clarinet and partially the Violin have the main parts. I named it Japanese maple because it is one of my favorite types of trees and my piece reminds me of it. Composing is a very interesting process. It can help you understand about chord progressions, chord tones, and composing music in general. Experimenting with melodies was fun and helpful for finding a melody that I liked.
I started with a song with a main melody and then added chords to fit with the melody. The Flute, Clarinet, and Violin play my main melody. My piece is named Between Seasons because to me it sort of sounds like you are in between spring and summer, but you can't tell which. I had challenges with making a chord progression for all the instruments because sometimes I think of some chord progression but it only sounds good with one instrument and then I have to think of another chord progression that fits with the other TWO instruments. This is the first time I have had my music played by real musicians, but I have composed songes and music before. d but I also always get really nervous when the Metropolis Ensamble plays it because I'm worried that no one will like it. I have learned that it is harder then I thought to compose music because you have to make all the instruments fit with each other most of the time.
I started with a chord progression. After I did that i had to figure out what my main melody would be. After I did that i added addition parts that would be my middle. Then i created an ending. My main instrument is the clarinet. The title is: City Stroll. I thought it my piece felt like walking in the city and seeing many different people walk by. Seeing their personalities and if they're mad happy or sad. Coming up with an ending was hard because i just wanted to keep going but i knew i had to stop.It was really cool composing music this year. I learned all about how to read notes and what dynamics are and what different instruments sound like.
I just started with a tune I liked and went from there. The flute plays the main part and to tell you the truth the two different parts were supposed to be different pieces alltogether. It was challenging to get all the insturments to align instead of them all sounding seperate. I have learned how to connect harmony to melody so that chords fit together and a whole lot of other stuff.
I started with a chord progession of A and G and then added a melody. The flute and the violin play my main melody. I picked the name "Changing Paths" because half way through my piece the melody completely changes. I had trouble finishing my first melody. It's been really cool to create our own scores.
I started by picking my main instrument and making a simple melody and then adding on to it in different instruments and trying to make them fit together and sound good. The main instrument of my piece is the trumpet. This part plays my main melody. I named my piece Rocky Road, because it has a lot going on, but in some way it all fits together. My challenge was to make all of the different parts sound good together. I have learned this year that there is a lot more to composing music than just putting some notes together and playing them.
I started out writing my piece by composing the main melody, which can be heard at the very beginning of the piece. I then divided up my melody into small ideas, which were sometimes only a couple of notes long. I repeated them throughout the entire piece, having these tidbits of the melody echo throughout the different instruments. I found that writing the melody before trying to compose the entire piece was very helpful in that I already had a sense of what I wanted in the piece; it gave a structure to composing it. The biggest challenge I faced in creating this piece was figuring out how to keep the piece from sounding too monotone; in the beginning I had the entire piece in C major, so it sounded almost too happy. I think the addition of the minor section in the middle of the piece shows a different interpretation of my melody and is very contrasting to the original C major melody; it is now probably my favorite part of the piece. Overall, I really enjoyed composing this.
I started with A chord that I liked. When I started to make it I didn't like so I wanted to start over. Something that is important is the ending because that is my favorite part. A challenge was starting over with a different melody. I learned that your piece can't be perfect and you can always can make changes to it.
I did have to add melody with chords in the beginning. But after that I was fine. The Clarinet and Violin have big parts. The Hectic Work Day means a hard working day in the making and the end of the work day. A bunch of Challenges in my piece was to keep my piece going. That was hard. Making music is so cool. It was awesome making it and hearing it. I learned how music is made and I really thought just that people just made it.
I started with a simple chord progression and made a melody to go along with it. Then I started adding little bits and pieces of harmony and bass here and there. Then I made final touches and BAZZAM there it was. My piece is called The Combinations because all I was doing while making my piece was adding combinations of instruments together and thinking of different combinations. I had to make chord progressions, melodies, parts, harmonies, and bass lines. It was hard but eventually, there it was! I had a hard time thinking of new stuff. But if I thought for I while a thought would pop into my head. This year I had 2 different compositions outside of school. I kind of connected all of them and was inspired to put things in my piece from other pieces that I've made. I learned that if you try hard enough, you will have your piece come out well.
I started with a chord progression, and then made my melody. The process of making composition was good, but hard at the same time. The main instrument in my piece is the clarinet. The title of my piece is rain because, in the beginning it is softer and calmer, but then it is more "strong", like in a rain storm. Some challenges I had was making some parts of my composition sound better. Because some notes would fit, but some would not so I had to find what sounded the best. I have learned a lot from my first composition. Sense that was my first composition I was just putting notes where I thought they would sound good. But now I have learned to know what letter each note is, and what notes go into which chords which has helped me a lot.
Instead of fitting the melody with the chords I fit the chords with the melody. Almost all of the instruments have the main part at one point. The story my piece tells is the course of the day. It was a bit of a challenge to come up with more once I felt done. I learned that songs always sound better with a refrain.
I started with the melody and then I started to add the chords and other little bits here and there. The clarinet is the main instument for my piece but then the violin started to come in. The big part is the realy fast part at the begining. the trumpet was starting to overpower the clarinet so I made it softer. I have learned that all of the time that you compose music you learn more about it.
I wanted this piece to flow and be melodic, but not necessarily return to a main theme. I tried to make it sound like controlled rambling. To do this, I made sure that no instrument was the clear leader. Instead, all the parts work together to create the piece, yet each part on its own does not sound complete.
