#342: Most companies have plenty of documentation. The problem is almost none of it is findable, current, or true. Between what's documented, what's actually true, and what people actually do, there are gaps wide enough to kill any AI initiative before it starts. Viktor makes a distinction that reframes the whole problem: there are two types of documentation. Why something was done -- that's eternal. How something works -- that's outdated the moment someone changes a config and forgets to update the wiki. The information about that change probably exists somewhere -- in a Zoom recording, a Slack thread, somebody's head -- but it's not where anyone would think to look for it. The running system itself is the most accurate documentation any company has. Your Kubernetes cluster tells you how many pods are running right now. Git tells you how many you wished you had. Those aren't the same thing, and pretending Git is the source of truth is a comfortable lie most teams tell themselves daily. RAG won't save this. Not the way most people imagine it -- point an agent at your docs and let it answer questions. That fails for the same reason Google's old enterprise search appliance failed. What could work is a continuous process that watches every information source, extracts what matters, and updates a central location intelligently. We have the pieces for this. Nobody's built it yet. The practical path forward: audit what you have before building anything new. Instrument your documentation the way you instrument applications -- find out what people search for and can't find. Design for retrieval, not storage. Build feedback loops. And stop treating documentation as a project with an end date. Max talks with Josh Harnagel, COO of Redbird Flight, about a practical use-case that matters to almost every instrument pilot: logging IFR instrument currency and staying proficient in an FAA-approved simulator. Seit 20 Jahren entwickelt die Universität Bern einen Massenspektrometer, der mit der Artemis-Mission mit den Astronauten zum Mond fliegen soll. Für den Leiter des Physikalischen Instituts ist dies vor allen ein Test. Sein Instrument soll einmal Leben auf dem Mars entdecken. Eigentlich hätte Artemis II Anfang März starten sollen, um mit 4 Astronauten einen Probeflug um den Mond zu machen. Nun wurde der Start auf April verschoben. «Wenn Menschen dabei sind, darf kein Risiko eingegangen werden», begründet der Schweizer Astrophysiker Peter Wurz diesen Schritt. Er steht in engem Austausch mit der Nasa. Bereits bei der Apollo-Mission schrieb ein Instrument der Universität Bern Geschichte: Das Sonnenwindsegel. Es sammelte den Sonnenwind ein, der nur ausserhalb der Atmosphäre weht. Noch vor der US-Flagge pflanzten die Astronauten das Segel in den Mond. Die enge Zusammenarbeit mit der Nasa ist nie abgebrochen. Die Universität Bern wurde angefragt, für die Artemis-Mission einen Massenspektrometer zu entwickeln, der portabel mit Laser die Zusammensetzung des Mondes erkunden kann. Das Ziel ist es, mit diesem Gerät einst nach Leben auf dem Mars zu suchen. Welchen Anforderungen muss ein Instrument im Weltall genügen? Welche Interessen stehen hinter der neuen Mondmission? Eine Möglichkeit, die ihm ein anderes Gesetz erlaubt als das, auf das er seine globalen Zölle basiert hatte.Doch es bleiben viele Fragen offen: Was bedeuten die neuen Zölle etwa für die Handelspartner? Die EU legte prompt das Handelsabkommen mit den USA auf Eis. Was passiert nach den 150 Tagen? Geht Trump nun einer seiner wichtigsten außenpolitischen Hebel verloren? Und drohen der US-Regierung nun Rückzahlungen in Milliardenhöhe?Ingo Zamperoni und seine Frau Jiffer Bourguignon versuchen in dieser Folge, das Chaos um Trumps Zollpolitik ein wenig zu ordnen. When those patterns stabilize across prospects, you have a repeatable motion. Use paid POCs as a procurement front-loading mechanism, not a revenue play: Qualytics charges nominal amounts for some POCs—not for the revenue, but to get the MSA signed and force both parties through legal/security review upfront. For technical founders who "figured out" founder-led sales, resist the urge to replicate your motion with more SDRs. Bring in strategic leadership that can build a scalable system. Instrument product engagement as your earliest churn signal—then intervene immediately: Beyond quarterly NPS and executive QBRs, Gorkem tracks granular product usage: how many data quality operations users run, how many anomalies they discover, how actively they're editing rules. When engagement drops, he doesn't wait—he jumps into the customer's existing weekly meetings to diagnose and course-correct. For B2B founders building complex products with long time-to-value, passive health scores aren't enough. You need active usage telemetry and a low-latency intervention process. Translate technical capabilities into vertical-specific business outcomes: Gorkem doesn't pitch "data quality for data engineers." He talks about premium leakage with insurance companies and OCC/SEC data controls with banks. This reframing works because buyers recognize their problem, not a vendor category. The shift requires research: understand each vertical's regulatory environment, operational pain points, and the business metrics executives care about. When you walk in speaking their language about their P&L impact, you're not another vendor—you're someone who gets it. Time your market entry to when "nice-to-have" becomes "must-have": When Qualytics launched, some enterprises called data quality a "nice-to-have." AI adoption changed that calculus overnight. Organizations planning to let 20,000 employees interrogate data through AI interfaces suddenly realized they need robust data governance, quality controls, and cataloging first. Gorkem's timing wasn't luck—he built during the "nice-to-have" phase so he'd be ready when AI budgets made it mandatory.
