We've been having more dreams lately.. Welcome to Sunrise City, the feel-good sophomore record from "soft" indie guys Sub-Radio! This band of middle-school friends went viral as they got down bad for Stacy's Dad, and by broadcasting on Reddit during the pandemic they were able to generate a significant fanbase. Sunrise City is a saccharine nostalgia trip from teenage nights on the beach to Summer's End. Can their hooky record full of nuggets of gold carry them to a strong ranking?James & Connor reminisce on hard times and strong men before giving this audience-recommended album a listen. The Mixtaper has a Better View and a few facts about tricky fae (who can play a mean recorder), the short-lived Reddit Public Access Network, and Monkey. Monkey? Monkey. We'll talk about the nuances of Pink Lemonade and Tiger's Blood and find out if WE'RE IN LOVE (!!) with this album... and whether Sub-Radio is Onto Us. What's your favorite snow cone flavor? Let's kick off 2026 with my interview with creator Nick Cagnetti, co-writer and artist for the upcoming heartfelt superhero/horror hit Spirit of the Shadows! Nick is probably best known for his work on Pink Lemonade and XINO, and it's important to note that this is his first full-length artwork since the aforementioned Pink Lemonade. Here's how Spirit of the Shadows is described: "Once, Erik Leroux was a mortal musician, selflessly devoted to his music and his true love, Katrina . . . until his sudden death plunged his soul into the carnival-like torments of the Spirit World beyond our own. Now, reborn as a phantom with fleeting memories of his life among the living, and forever cursed to bear the arcane costume his corpse wore to the grave, Erik will claw his way back from the infernal planes to uncover the mysteries of his own life . . . and avenge the dark sins that transformed him into the SPIRIT OF THE SHADOWS!" We discuss how this comic miniseries came to be and who the characters are, also explore Nick's comics career, and talk about what he has coming our way in 2026! The Vancouver-based Pink Lemonade was started in 2010 by two doctors Allen and Cassie Gabriel, a plastic surgeon and an anesthesiologist. They saw a gap in non-medical, emotional support for women being treated for breast cancer in the Portland-metro area. They began offering retreats and support groups locally, eventually adding a mentorship program where breast cancer survivors who have gone through treatment mentor others who have more recently gotten a diagnosis. And 15 years later, the nonprofit serves people in all 36 Oregon counties and six in SW Washington. Susan Stearns is the CEO of Pink Lemonade and was its first staff member who was also a survivor. Tina Sixberry has been a mentor since 2019 after participating in other programs. Miyuki Yaegashi met Sixberry and became her mentee earlier this year, shortly after she was diagnosed. All three join us in studio to talk about creating connections and community, and making sure those facing breast cancer diagnosis and treatment know they are not alone.

Ben Branson is one of the most creative minds in beverages today. As the founder of Seedlip — the world's first distilled non-alcoholic spirit — he didn't just launch a product, he pioneered an entire category. That category, once niche and unproven, is now valued at more than $11 billion, and Seedlip was acquired by Diageo in 2019, just five years after its launch. Now, Ben's back with a new venture: Pollen Projects, a drinks innovation studio creating a range of unconventional non-alcoholic products. The two early standouts? Sylva — a non-alcoholic sipping spirit distilled and matured from trees (yes, trees!) — and Seasn, a duo of cocktail bitters designed to flavor everything from seltzer to cocktails. In this conversation, Ben takes us inside his product development process — from cold-calling 500 top bars to obsessively studying 17th-century distillation texts — to assess white space for Seedlip. He also shares what's next for Sylva, including a new distillery in upstate New York to make spirits from American trees. That operation will accompany Sylva's existing UK distillery, which is already producing spirits made from British Hazel and African Padauk wood.In this conversation, Ben shares the research, philosophy, and creative rigor behind his brands — and what he's doing differently this time around. You'll hear about the early days of Seedlip, how Sylva's distillation and aging process borrows from perfumery and traditional spirits, and why simplicity — not trend-chasing — is the secret to building lasting brands. We discuss:Why Ben isn't just making non-alc alternatives, but rather inventing a new class of liquidsHis methodical, data-driven approach to product innovationThe surprising reason he chose to launch Seedlip into high-end, on-premise accounts rather than DTCThe innovative techniques used to produce Sylva's non-alcoholic sipping spiritsWhy Ben emphasizes clarity above all — whether in product design or brand strategyWhat he learned from early product missteps — and how he's applying those lessons to Sylva and SeasnWhy Ben doesn't build brands for himself — he builds them to meet real consumer needs with standout experiencesLast Call:In this Last Call update, we reconnect with Issamu Kamide, co-founder of Wonderwerk, to hear what's driving growth for one of the most innovative brands in wine.We first featured Wonderwerk last fall in Ep. 36 Since that time, Wonderwerk has grown its revenue 30%. The inevitability of change is something we can either fear or embrace with insatiable curiosity, and one of them, of course, yields far better results than the other. Today's guest is a serial entrepreneur and self-described "forever intern" who co-founded Basic.Space, which later acquired Design Miami, where he now serves as chairman. Up next is Design.Space, a project that explores the power of quality curation within an IRL/URL retail experience while bringing together the worlds of design, art, and fashion. In a culture where the concept of community has been co-opted by big business and marketing teams, Jesse Lee shares a different approach that, for this conversation, we'll call a club. Whether or not you're familiar with the burgeoning world of design and its evolving role in communicating status the way a highly coveted watch or luxury fashion once did, Jesse's mindset is one to emulate. His perspective is especially valuable for those seeking their own point of convergence where passion and purpose meet in a way that is both meaningful and profitable. "It's not just about the work ethic, but also about wanting to learn. If it wasn't for that mindset, I don't think I'd be able to learn from music, fashion, technology, art, design, culinary—whatever it is. That's sort of been the mantra since day one." - Jesse Lee Design.Space will showcase a curated selection of archival and contemporary pieces from top artists, designers, galleries, and brands, including: Alexander May, AMEN, Archived, Avery Wheless, Brett Robinson, Brian Thoreen, Cadogan Tate, David Kelley, Enorme, Ettore Sottsass, Found Objects, George Davies, GUFRAM, Guido, Jahlil Nzinga, Jean Pigozzi, Jeffrey Deitch, Jess Hannah, Jeaux de Peau by Purienne, Justin Reed, Keiko Moriuchi, Laura Sattin, Leyla Fisher, Lily Clark, Marcin Rusak, Marquel Williams, Marta, Max Lamb, Memphis, Meritalia, Michelle Jane Lee, niceworkshop, Nick Thomm, Nike, NM3, NO GA, Paulin Paulin Paulin, Period Correct, Puck, Raiffe Glass, Roham Shamekh, Sabine Marcelis, Sam Klemick, Same Old/BASA Vintage, Sasha December, Spaceless Gallery, Stephanie Ketty, Stickymonger, Studio Ker, The Future Perfect, The Pink Lemonade, Tokio., Tristan Marsh, Tsu Lange Yor, USM, Verre d'Onge, Wexler Gallery, Willo Perron, Yung Jake & more to be announced soon. Episode Highlights: Jesse Lee's Journey from Intern to Industry Leader – How his relentless curiosity and willingness to do any job led to his success in music, fashion, and design. The Birth of Basic.Space – Why Jesse created Basic.Space as a curated platform for creatives, and how it evolved into an ecosystem connecting sellers, collectors, and brands. The Acquisition of Design Miami – The strategic move behind Basic.Space acquiring Design Miami, and how the two entities complement each other. The Concept Behind Design.Space – How Jesse is bridging digital and physical retail by creating a hybrid shopping experience that blends the best of Basic.Space and Design Miami. The Shift from Fashion to Design – Why luxury consumers are now more interested in furniture, objects, and design than traditional status-driven fashion. The Strategy Behind Invitation-Only Shopping – Why Basic.Space is moving to a membership-based model and limiting access to its most engaged customers. Curation as the Key to Modern Luxury – How brands and platforms must focus on thoughtful selection rather than mass availability to stay relevant. The Role of Physical Events in a Digital World – Why Jesse believes creating real-world moments is critical, and how Design.Space will redefine the shopping experience. The Importance of Intersectionality in Business – Jesse's belief that success comes from mastering multiple industries—fashion, music, technology, art, and design—rather than specializing in just one. Why Push Marketing Is Over – Jesse's philosophy that the best brands don't chase customers but create experiences that naturally pull the right people in. Learn more about your ad choices. Today, we're talking with Justin Fenchel, a co-founder and the CEO of BeatBox Beverages. For those unfamiliar with the brand, it's an 11% ABV, wine-based RTD party punch in flavors like Blue Razzberry, Pink Lemonade, and Fruit Punch. Sound like fun? Well, fun — and fun flavors — are its main selling points, and this brand is on fire, especially with Millennial and Gen Z audiences. BeatBox did more than $100 Million in sales last year, and is on track to double that again this year. The brand first made headlines in 2014 for getting one of the biggest investments on Shark Tank's history, with a $1 Million dollar investment from Mark Cuban. But lest you think it was smooth sailing from there on, that wasn't the case. BeatBox toiled away for years, with sales flatlining as the brand tweaked its product and systems in real time, changing formats (moving from 5L bag-in-box to single serve) and distributor networks ( moving from liquor/wine to beer distributors). With dedication, the team kept pushing, until it landed on the winning formula that unlocked exponential growth. Now, a decade after that first Shark Tank appearance, BeatBox is running on a few years of +100% sales growth. Justin shares his hard-won insights on how to persevere despite product-market fit issues and funding challenges. And then, how to support hockey-stick growth from strategic, operational, and human resources standpoints. We discuss: The market whitespace BeatBox identified and built its product on Landing on fun and flavor as key differentiators Early audience growth insights Building a brand — and company culture — with staying power How to leverage media appearances (like Shark Tank) to attract investment and retail placements Maintaining adaptability in challenging times Keys to building strong relationships with distributors and retailers Why BeatBox ultimately switched from liquor/wine to beer distribution channels How to engage consumers authentically through experiences and word of mouth Marketing strategies to build a community of superfans How to incorporate sustainable practices into a winning business model Links: Episode 33: Fundraising Masterclass with Giuseppe Infusino (with Last Call discussion of Dan Petroski / Massican Wine) Stay tuned for our next episode dropping on Sept. 18. Your Main Creeps Matt and Kelsey try KitKats in this episode, and they're pink lemonade flavored. Matt thinks he won't be stoked about that flavor, nor does he think he'd be stoked to try anymore ramen, but he did add a zhuzh to the episode. Then, Kelsey provides an update on the sleepover story in Oregon that we covered previously, in which the father of one of the girls allegedly tried drugging all of the party goers by lacing their smoothies. Kelsey's update involves his plea and sentencing in the case.

“I'm not yelling at children!” exclaims Christi as things get heated on the second half of the "Boys Are Cuties, Girls Have Cooties". Abby is fuming over Cathy's all boys team, which Christi correctly guesses will result in their girls getting pushed that much harder. Abby launches directly into harsh criticisms of the soloists and starts getting on every girl's case about their hats for Pink Lemonade.Cathy's boys bring the charm as OnStage America commences. All Abby needs the girls to do is be better than Cathy's group. Things look rocky fast as aside from Kendall's 3rd place, none of the soloists rank highly. It's all up to Pink Lemonade, but a successful performance is marred when Chloe drops her hat. It's a worst case scenario for Christi as Chloe's been the target of Abby's ire for some time already. Even if the performance is well received; any and all faults will be placed squarely on Chloe's shoulders, especially if they lose to Cathy. This marks a low point for Christi, whose already had a very rough go of it this season. As she collects Chloe to leave, Christi is recorded yelling at bystanders in the hallway.Having been unable to escape this clip for a whole decade, Christi would like to share that it isn't what it looks like! What really happened? Well join us today for what's sure to be, for Christi at least, a lose-lose situation.Quotes“Cathy is telling her team it smells like something's burning. Woo, it's us because we are hot. Oh my god get a life. She's so cheesy. Her and Abby. God, they're having like, a lame-off.” (13:38 -13:54 | Kelly and Christi)“The whole thing went on with the costume. Then Jill on the bus and the costume. Then we just never heard another word about it. It just disappeared! Yeah, that was the main story of the first half.” (19:59-20:11 | Kelly and Christi)“Season 3 remains a very dark time in my life. This remains one of my low moments, especially when it aired and people were like Oh My God Christi is yelling at children!” (32:51-33:03 | Christi) “Then you come back and fight with me. You have more on your mind this week, then you take it out on me bitch! I don't take it out on you as much as I think I'd fucking had it. Didn't we all have it at that point? Yeah, on me.” (42:37-46:45 | Kelly and Christi) LinksSubscribe to us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC50aSBAYXH_9yU2YkKyXZ0w Subscribe to our Patreon: www.patreon.com/backtothebarreThank you to Ashley Jana for allowing us to use Electricity!! “I love when she says wild shit to the kids,” says Christi. “Because the kids just look at her like she's crazy.” On the sixth episode of Dance Moms' third season, Abby gets angry with the kids. After having come 4th in the last competition, no one is awarded the top of the pyramid. An upcoming On Stage America competition in New Jersey aims to pit the girls against Cathy's all male group; Abby is not prepared to take home anything but first place. The girls begin rehearsing Pink Lemonade while Kendall, Chloe and Nia compete for solo rehearsal time.Melissa struggles to come to grips with her daughters being at the bottom of the pyramid. She fails to stand up for herself, which angers the other moms. In an attempt to bolster's Kendall's standing in the group, Jill hires a costume designer to make Kendall's dance outfit. This upsets Abby so much it results in Kendall being removed from the performance all together, leading to a massive blow-out with Jill. It's a tense week that can't be contained to one episode. Join us for this part 1 look at the events that would eventually lead to the infamous "Chloe's Hat Incident" and discover just how dirty Broadway Baby really was.Quotes“Well we always sound btichy, but come on. You don't get to come on a show like that where everybody's fucking tortured and never be fucking tortured.” (12:49 -12:56 | Christi)“Somebody asked Paige are you embarrassed or do you get upset when your mom fights like that with Abby? Her comment was that no, I don't understand why a lot of the other moms don't stick up for their kids.” (28:22-28:35 | Kelly)“Kendall doesn't come first, my dog comes first.” (43:43-43:46 | Kelly) “Broadway Baby sees Abby. She barks. You say I guess Broadway Baby can sense evil too. Yes, dogs are very sensitive. Dogs didn't like Ted Bundy either.” (46:32-46:45 | Kelly and Christi) LinksSubscribe to us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC50aSBAYXH_9yU2YkKyXZ0w Subscribe to our Patreon: www.patreon.com/backtothebarreThank you to Ashley Jana for allowing us to use Electricity!! Writer/artist Nick Cagnetti joins the show to talk about his graphic novel Pink Lemonade, his story in Oni Press' Xino and much more.
We consider the possibility of a Sarah proposal and whether she would ever get down on one knee. We hear about a woman who had a gift registry for her doctoral graduation, and Susie is weirdly mad about it. But Sarah thinks it's a cool way to celebrate something other than marriage and kids. We talk about paper weights and antiquated office supplies, and learn they actually make paper weights that aren't useless. We discuss the Harvard morgue manager who was selling body parts, and we realize the media didn't accurately portray him. We learn the origins of pink lemonade, or do we? Apparently, pink lemonade is a confusing and possibly racist drink. Or it's just gross. Or both. We celebrate wieners (not that kind) and talk about how terrible horse racing is. Oh, and we're pretty sure Susie just talked Sarah into starting an OnlyFans.Join our book club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/braincandypodSusie's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/susie_meisterSarah's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ImSarahRiceSponsors:Sign up for Chime today, and make this summer the best one yet - for yourself and your wallet at https://www.chime.com/braincandyGet an extended 30 day free trial when you go to https://www.dipseastories.com/braincandyGet 20% off when you go to https://www.liquidiv.com and use code: CANDY at checkout!Head to https://www.smalls.com/BRAINCANDY and use promo code: BRAINCANDY at checkout for 50% off your first order PLUS free shipping!More podcasts at WAVE: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/artist/wave-podcast-network/1437831426See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
We have a special treat for you today. I'm sitting down with comics creator Nick Cagnetti to talk about his break out series Pink Lemonade from Oni Press. Pink Lemonade is one of the most unique things I've read in quite some time and it couldn't drop at a more relevant juncture as Nick examines the exploitation in comics and more broadly in all our entertainment mediums in the book. It's got a real throwback quality to it that evinces the illustration styles of Jack Kirby mixed with the zaniness of Mike Allred's Madman. I loved this book. We also talked about Nick's contribution to the Xino anthology also from Oni, a weird surrealist science fiction series that reminds me of Black Mirror. I hope you enjoy this episode and make sure to pick up a copy of the Pink Lemonade trade in stores now. You can find more of Nick's work on his website, Instagram, and Twitter. There are many things we, as the Word Bros enjoy. Ice cream, puppy dogs, a fire on a brisk fall evening, and Pink Lemonade. Not the tasty summer drink but the amazingly original comic created by cartoonist Nick Cagnetti. Nick and the Bros chat about the exhaustion involved in promoting your comic, the origins of Pick Lemonade, and the awesomeness that is Spider-Man Unlimited. If you're a fan of Booster Gold or Mike Allred's Madman, this is the book for you. This is a public episode.
