Under the Electric Stars

The relentless stare of a hundred digital cameras, thousands of glares under masks, all focus in on a certain nobody — Caine Reyes — as they search for Su-jin, the only one they have eyes for. Featuring a split meaning for the title's pun, a way to make doors open, and three new voices… though one's more familiar to some. Trigger warnings for loud sounds, references to surveillance states, yelling, stalking, alarm sounds, and references to police brutality. Find us on our website at undertheelectricstars.com! This episode lit a fire in me—and I think it will in you too. I had the absolute joy of sitting down with Summer Day, the incredible woman behind the Fear Into Faith movement, and our conversation went deep into something the modern church often avoids: deliverance. If you've ever wondered whether spiritual warfare is real or if healing and freedom are for today, this one's for you. Summer shared her journey from being skeptical to boldly stepping into deliverance ministry—and how God used her willingness to say yes to bring healing and revival into countless homes. She reminded me (and all of us) that deliverance isn't just for “certain people” or dramatic stories. It's biblical. It's powerful. And it's something every believer is called to walk in. We talked about how the spirit always recognizes truth, even when the mind resists. And how revival won't come from platforms—it starts right in our homes. With moms who are willing to stand in the gap, pray over their kids, and say, “Not today, Satan.” If the topic of deliverance feels a little uncomfortable, lean in. There's a reason the enemy wants to keep it hidden. And there's so much freedom waiting on the other side. You'll walk away from this episode feeling empowered, seen, and challenged in the best kind of way. Let's be women who don't shrink back. Let's be revival moms. Can't wait to hear what stirs in your heart after this one. Returning guest Pete Kember (aka Sonic Boom) is back, and better than ever, as he tackles the 9th LP by The Beach Boys.  As it says in David Leaf's 1990 CD two-fer liner notes: “After side two of Today!, it didn't seem possible that Brian could return to these simpler themes, but for one last album, he found a way to combine Capitol's commercial demands with his artistic calling.”  Stay tuned, Pete'll be back for one of our many episodes on SMiLE!Here's just a few of the many things that Pete discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:How Pete's obsession with The Beach Boys began; An in-depth conversation about Brian Wilson's first acid trip in April 1965;A consensus on Bruce Johnston's entrance into the band;Exactly how influenced Animal Collective's Panda Bear is by The Beach Boys;Brian's absolute hatred of his vocal for “Let Him Run Wild”;And the great “filler” debate, specifically with regard to exactly how much of it mars this record.Listen: linktr.ee/discograffitiI support a wife and a six-year-old son with Discograffiti as my sole source of income. If you're a Beach Boys superfan like me, you'll want The Director's Cut of this episode. We've finally done it: all seven Edward Yang films discussed on Deep Cut. The only podcast to give Edward Yang the time and space he deserves as one of the all time greatest directors (and Wilson's favorite director)! We end our coverage on Yang with what is considered to be his magnum opus, 1991's A Brighter Summer Day, an intimate epic of teenage angst, romance, and rebellion that also captures Taiwan in a specific era of political and social turbulence with incredible detail. Together, we discuss ABSD's unique visual palette compared to Yang's other non-period work, and go in depth into its thematic concerns regarding Taiwan on a scale both personal and national. Wilson highlights the virtuosic blocking in large crowd scenes, Eli makes a case for proper education as the salve for social ills, and Ben asks, can a film be “too perfect”?Are you lonesome? Tyson Yunkaporta is an Apalech man who is an academic, researcher arts critic & father. He is also the author of Sand Talk,  an extraordinary reading experience.  Like many of Australia's First Peoples, he has a complex identity and history but it's this that gives him authority to write and speak in a way which connects the wisdom of the past to the needs of the future. The way he thinks demands a longer term perspective.  He is both philosophical and practical,  compassionate yet realistic. He is filled with an other-worldly understanding of humanity.  In this conversation he urges us to consider the non linear complexity of the world. He challenges our expectations, points out cultural shortcomings and invites us to recognise indigenous concepts and their history. Importantly he shows how these patterns have the potential to be incorporated into our non indigenous thinking which  builds hope and possibility to benefit us all.“I don't have answers but I know that stories connect us to country. Country knows the answers. Notice it and be a custodian".Episode SummaryMinimising abstractions between lore and landThe illusion of the environment which is hidden by siloed systemsLet's look like dickheads for a minute while we work out the path forwardLooking for seasonal signs and responding to themLore carries recipes for how to live our lives with story and patternComing back into rhythm with the natural worldRunning out of time - the time to reconnect with country is nowThe dominating authoritarianism in the western world demands people are disconnected from the landscapeMutual aid activism - not about throwing bombs but making sure everyone is fed.Self determination being thwarted by authoritarianismStop looking at things and look at structures, systems and patterns insteadQuietly getting on with it - syndicate your neighbourhood with the next neighbourhoodThe bullshit of nation building is key in the decimation of connection to country.Activism is an industry Positive and negative feedback loops to understand how symbioses interlock with othersStory, ceremony and ritual for real thinking and real meaning makingUntil art became capital it was something that every human did every day to understand their place in the worldHow do we find a way of storytelling without reducing it to words"Image, dance, song - can all portray story but they have no depth of meaning if they don't have place"The lore is in the land "Leave those who are pecking over the carcass of the earth to their dying beliefs and the rest of us can get on with rebuilding relationships, stories, knowledge and place. If climate reports and dystopian vibes are getting you down, this conversation with Meg Berryman might just lift you (gently) from the tiles.Meg is the host of the Regenerative Life podcast, where she holds activating and catalysing conversations about social change, sustainable business, holistic wellbeing, personal development and regeneration, creating ripples of change from the inside out. She's not only a brilliant interviewer, meeting mighty minds like Tyson Yunkaporta and Claire Dunn for the kinds of intellectual-yet-accessible chats that leave listeners awestruck, but a formidable thinker herself. We're stoked to welcome Meg for a wide-ranging convo that covers nervous system care, sitting in the magic dark, tending survival energy and watering the seeds of discontent. We discuss the perils of trying to make a positive impact out there if it's having a negative impact on you and your people. And how to go about satisfying that deep primal yearning to reconnect with self, earth and other beings. Right now, in this time of grief, confusion + frustration, Meg Berryman is pure medicine. Listen in. SHOW NOTESThe inspiration behind the Regenerative Life podcastAn unlearning journey of dropping the postures and dropping into true self.Finding the balance between the unknown + the five year plan. Challenging domesticity with wildnessRegeneration is an embodied experience; but it's not as easy as we've been sold. The things we've sold as making us happy aren't all they're cracked up to be. The agitation and restlessness we're feeling as feedback is not anything wrong with us! The lie of capitalism is that it's your problem, you need to buy something to fix you.The seeds of discontent are also the seeds of regenerationHomeostatic flux: ecosystems are constantly recalibrating according to feedback. How to reconsider + reevaluate what a good life is. We have a deep primal yearning to reconnect with ourselves, the earth, other being. That urge is continually being overidden because on some level, we assume there's something wrong with us. "It's not that I'm allergic to life, I'm allergic to the ways we've organised society and systems that are so removed from those basic primal instincts of being connected and belonging."Wisdom birthed from the bathroom floor. Epic burnout led to total breakdown led to epic recalibration. Is sheer willpower the only way to get shit done?Reframing breakdown as a period of magic dark. We've had a health and wellness paradigm for 20 years that's focussed on DOING things. But that keeps us in survival mode; it's not sustainable or regenerative. We need a whole lot of people to be regulated enough, for long enough, to make life giving decisions and make a dent in these systems.Being in conversation with questions. How do we come back to ourselves, and is that enough?Getting out of hustle culture in business. Everyone is saying, "we can't slow down because x, y, z….” It's the courageous soul chooses to interrogate that. If you're making impact out there, but that work is having a negative effect on your people in here, it's a net zero. It's not regenerative. The best gift you can give other beings is the gift of a settled system. Avoiding the one-two punch of shame and guilt.LINKS YOU'LL LOVEMy Grandmother's Hands -- Resmaa MenakemSupport the showSupport the show

Richard Christiansen believes that the true definition of luxury is having one's senses on full blast—seeing, tasting, smelling, hearing, and touching the world around by engaging in its beauty and bounty to the fullest. This idea is at the heart of his company, the garden-pleasure apothecary Flamingo Estate, which is both a place—a home and garden on a seven-acre property in the hills of Los Angeles—and a brand, which operates a global farming collective and sells wellness, beauty, and “home essentials” products. In just a few years, Flamingo Estate has collaborated with cultural figures such as Julianne Moore, Martha Stewart, and Ai Weiwei, and created some 200 or so products, from C.S.A.-style farm boxes and flower arrangements, to scented candles and a rosé wine, to body washes and chocolates. Capturing the spirit of all this is a new book, Flamingo Estate: The Guide to Becoming Alive, which tells the story of his company's rapid rise and includes interviews with the likes of Jane Fonda, John Legend, and Alice Waters. On the episode, Christiansen talks about his lifelong connection with beekeeping and honey; why more brands should embrace “radical inconsistency” in their products; and how reading a book by Jane Goodall, and later befriending the anthropologist and conservationist, changed the course of his life.Special thanks to our Season 10 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Richard Christiansen[4:24] Flamingo Estate[8:05] Flamingo Estate: The Guide to Becoming Alive[46:21] Jane Goodall[12:48] Alice Waters[15:06] Harvey[35:35] Chandelier Creative[45:51] Benetton[45:51] Colors[50:35] Rumiko Murata[52:35] Owl Bureau[58:28] “The Summer Day”

I'm Josh Cooperman and this is Convo By Design with an episode about two sides of this industry that are rarely talked about. Two voices you rarely hear from, except here, of course. These two amazing individuals met me at Design Hardware for our Summer Day of Design event. Something important about the following episode right from the start, and this is not exclusive to the business of design. We're talking about building teams and promoting your talent. These concepts are universally important and often neglected. But not here, not today. Designer Resources Pacific Sales Kitchen and Home. Where excellence meets expertise. Monogram - It's the details that define Monogram ThermaSol - Redefining the modern shower experience. Without steam, it's just a bathroom. Design Hardware - A stunning and vast collection of jewelry for the home!  - Where service meets excellence TimberTech - Real wood beauty without the upkeep I have a tendency to repeat stories on occasion. No really, it's true. And, if you have been listening to the show for any amount of time, you have probably picked up on this. I lean in on the things that have made an impact on me and how those things have affected my life and work. So, I tell you now, as I have told you before, I am not interested in doing a show about the business of design. Over the past 8 or 9 years, the business of design has gotten far more competitive. Partly due to the influx of new designers that enter the industry after every societal meltdown, be it a financial crisis like 08/09 or COVID. The same thing used to happen in my broadcast days. In that case, so many new people would be hired only to be fired at the end of each year and those people would go off and start their own advertising agency. In the design business, Many designers who don't really make it as designers have found a niche business consulting designers on how to run their design businesses. I cannot tell you how many emails I receive from design business consultants who want to come on the show and there is a reason you don't hear them on the show. I think if you want to learn something, it shouldn't be from someone who couldn't do it themselves but from someone who has exceeded in that particular area. Before I get angry emails, I'm not suggesting they are all bad or unhelpful, some are, I'm sure. But when I share the stories behind individuals with you, there is a reason for that.  Today, you are going to hear from Brian Pinkett, Principle Architect with Landry Design Group and Erik Perez, Founder and Principle of Hello PR. I have known both of these men for many years and I have seen them in action and for those reasons I am thrilled to share this episode with you.  This episode was recorded live from Design Hardware in Los Angeles, but you know this because they are also long time sponsor partners of Convo By Design. I host a Day of Design for each season and this was from our July, summer session. These sessions are full days of recordings, panel conversations and product showcases designed specifically for busy designers to elevate their game through exposure, networking and education. First up, you are going to hear from Brian Pinkett about training, teaching and mentoring talent and how to build a culture. Next, you will hear from Erik Perez about getting the most exposure for the work you do and how to leverage that into new business. And you'll hear everything, right after this. Thank you, Brian and Erik, love what you do and I'm thankful for your friendship and collaboration. Thank you to my partner sponsors, ThermaSol, Pacific Sales, TimberTech, Monogram and Design Hardware. These partners are amazing companies all who have made a concerted effort to support the design community through education, incentives, events, media and exposure, not to mention a collection of extraordinary products and service to match. The 1991 film A Brighter Summer Day, directed by Edward Yang, is considered by many one of the best movies ever made. The film is set in Taiwan, shortly after the Chinese Civil War, when the country was under martial law, with a political and cultural pressure felt at every level of society. At the center of this intricately plotted four-hour drama is the family of fourteen-year-old Xiao Si'r, whose strong sense of honor and justice is pulled in various directions as he gets caught up in a youth gang and romantically entangled with the girlfriend of a disappeared gang leader. But more than that, this incredibly textured four-hour drama gives the sense of a whole uneasy social fabric. As this is the first Chinese-language film the Criteria hosts have covered, they are joined by film festival programmer Frank Yan, who provides crucial historical and cultural context about Taiwanese history and cinema. We pick the last of our Final Four from the Brat Regional, the quadrant dedicated to the runaway trend of the past few months: bright green, self-confident, totally unbothered. Charli XCX started it, but it doesn't have to be pop music — it's a state of mind more than a sound. Alex Robert Ross is joined by Brat experts Sandra Song, Hannah Sung, and Vivian Medithi to look at what the brat aesthetic meant this summer and how music responded.
