EPISODE 76 | Klown Kar - The KKK Can KMA (World Is Weird 8) We're always products of the time and place we live in, so when a Southern group of friends got together in the wake of the American Civil War to start a fun club, it's really not that big a surprise that it quickly transformed into the largest racist organization in the country. We're talking about the Ku Klux Klan, a terrorist group that has been responsible for literally thousands of deaths and violent acts over the years. But the Klan is not just one thing. It's had at least three different incarnations and today is a motley collection of power-hungry criminals and grifters who may or may not believe some of the inflammatory and even outlandish narratives that try to bind the turbulent world of white supremacy into a cohesive whole. As always, though, they can dress up in white robes with silly pointy hoods all they want, but they can't stop being who they really are, deep down inside. Very often, their ambitions and appetites end up being their undoing. We look at the three different incarnations of the Klan, how a movie helped revitalize them, the time Superman made them laughing stocks, when Beulah Mae Donald took them to court, some of their symbols, some of their more egregious crimes, and even a Klan-sponsored effort to take over a Caribbean island. Move over Field of Dreams.....A League of Their Own is the best damn baseball movie EVER. We'll bet all of our Rockford Peach baseball cards! ALoTO, from 1992 and directed by Penny Marshall chronicles the history of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, a time from 1943 to 1954 when WOMEN played BASEBALL professionally because all of the men were at war! This movie will make you laugh, cry, hug your sister, and reminds you how awesome Tom Hanks and Gena Davis are. We've seen this movie 1000 times with (or without sound) and love it so. Come on and listen to us do fine renditions of "We're the members of the All American League..." and "This Used to be Be My Playground", discuss if Dottie dropped the ball on purpose or just had a really bad day, which Rockford Peach we like the most, and how the big band soundtrack and women kicking baseball butt in several montages gives us the internal goosebumps just like when we saw Wonder Woman! PS We kept calling the pitcher Ellen Sue, Sue Ellen because we're both still on a high from our Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter is Dead episode. Theme song sung by Deidre Cullen. She learned about the All American League while visiting a relative in Fort Wayne in 1950. She joined the league the next year and played for Fort Wayne, Kenosha and South Bend as a catcher and outfielder until the league folded in 1954.
