Guests are way back. In this episode, I sit down with my best—Chase Lambin is a former professional baseball player who spent 15 years chasing the Big League dream, and now coaches in the Texas Rangers organization.Chase gives us an inside peak at life in professional baseball, including stories I've never heard before. His Tracy McGrady story alone makes this episode worth tuning in.We get into my favorite part of having a buddy who coaches future Major Leaguers—the emotional aspect of players getting called up to the Big Leagues. For me, seeing a text vid of a call-up is like looking into my stocking on Christmas morning. If you're not still doing that, might be time to upgrade your S/O (but that's for a future solo ep).Chase tells the story of their most recent call-up, Blaine Crim, who, incidentally, is my new favorite player.Funny how you get older and pull for the 27-year old call-up you have some Kevin Bacon connection to. But when you were 9, you'd have used that rookie's baseball card in your tire spokes. Well, I'm older now, and would sooner use a Topps Justin Verlander to give my 4-year old's balance bike the vroom sound. We also discuss Chase's approach to parenting, coaching and maintaining perspective. He shares insights from his book The Hitters Handbook, and reflects on lessons learned from coaches and teammates throughout his career.Re baseball, we cover everything from 12-year old travel ball to Corey Seager riling up the Rangers in the playoffs because he got excited about a homerun (which he doesn't do often). There's a reason Chase & I have remained the best of buds since we met in 1994. Episodes where I have him on keep getting better! But yeah, that's not the reason.I'll just tell you that having a 'bestie' you've known since 9th grade, and getting to broadcast some our conversations with you beautiful MFs, is one of my great joys in life. At least in part, because you've told me you enjoy them too.

Jamar Hill is a coach now, but before that, he was a pro baseball player in the Mets organization. He grew up in Anchorage, where playing baseball wasn't always easy: limited facilities, long winters and not much opportunity to play year-round. He says that in Alaska, you get about a quarter of the playing time compared to other places. But in a way, that made him love the game even more. As a kid, he followed the Alaska Baseball League, one of the best summer leagues in the country. It brought in top talent every year — future first-round draft picks — and watching those games gave him an early sense of how the baseball world worked. By the time he was 16, most of the teams he played on included at least one future Major League player. And by the end of high school, he was drafted by the Mets. He became one of their top power prospects — a lefty bat who hit right-handed pitching especially well. He went on to hit over 100 professional home runs. But beyond the stats, it was his early exposure to high-level talent, and his ability to adapt, that shaped his perspective. That perspective is still with him today — as a coach, a mentor and someone who's all about creating opportunities for the next generation. Today, Jamar is focused on giving back to the community that raised him. As a youth coach and founder of RBI Alaska, he's spent the last 10 years helping young athletes grow — as players and as people. He's currently leading the development of the Mountain View Field House, a year-round indoor training facility that will give local kids access to the kind of resources he didn't have growing up. For him, coaching isn't just about skill development, it's about building character, creating opportunity and showing kids that their environment doesn't have to limit their ambition. He mentors with intention, using his own experiences in professional baseball to help young players navigate the mental, emotional and physical sides of the game. Through that work, he's helping shape confident, resilient athletes who are prepared for whatever comes next, on the field or off.

But now as the city gets ready to celebrate 25 seasons of professional baseball, WUKY's Saving Stories has this look back at how it all began. Nunn Center for Oral History director Dr. Doug Boyd shares audio from a 2019 interview with Alan Stein, who along with other prominent members of the community, led an effort to bring minor league baseball to Lexington. In this portion of the conversation Stein recalls a literal 11th hour curveball his group had to handle before presenting its best case to an MLB franchise expansion committee. It's a story you have to hear to believe.

Having spent his adult livelihood among the top 1% producers in sports and business, Trent is dedicated to empowering people to reach their goals, peak performance, and attain their dreams. Episode page with transcript, video, and more. An entrepreneur of 12 companies and longtime Entrepreneur Organization Member, he is best known for being a two-sport Division I Collegiate Athlete and Coaching 12 years in Professional Baseball with three organizations - including three (3) trips to the World Series - working with the Detroit Tigers, two-time American League Champion Cleveland Indians and the 2002 World Champion Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  He's the author of a new book, Leading Winning Teams: How Teamwork, Motivation, and Strategy Achieve Big League Success, and he's also the host of his podcast, "Winners Find a Way." Trent has worked on staff with famed personalities, coaches, and executives, including Nick Saban, Joe Maddon, Tom Izzo, Mike Scioscia, and my favorite from that list… Sparky Anderson. This episode covers the importance of learning from mistakes, resilience, and the parallels between sports and business leadership. Trent shares impactful lessons from his career, including a pivotal mistake involving contract negotiations that shaped his approach to accountability and preparation. The conversation explores themes such as embracing failure as a stepping stone to growth, the necessity of adaptability in high-pressure environments, and the role of coaching in fostering continuous improvement. Insights on balancing personal and professional commitments, the evolution of strength training in baseball, and cultivating high-performing teams round out a compelling discussion on achieving sustained success through intentional learning and reflection. Questions and Topics: What's your favorite mistake? Are you willing to share what the main promises were that the Angels made verbally but never included in the written contract? Do coaches typically have an agent or a lawyer, or is that something you just handle on your own? How has the thinking evolved about bulking up in baseball? Is it still considered risky, or is it more about how players approach strength training? As a strength and conditioning coach, were you traveling constantly with both the Major League and minor league teams? What was that like for your family life? What can we learn from athletes about bouncing back from mistakes that might apply to entrepreneurship or our own work? You told me you get excited about mistakes—why is that, and how do people respond when you show that enthusiasm?

Episode 257 features author, Joseph R. Haynes discussing his book on barbecue history and Josh Schaub, Commissioner of the American Association of Professional Baseball providing baseball fans with alternatives to the MLB.  Plus Jeff tells about his special weekend in Philadelphia   Joseph R. Haynes is an award winning barbecue cook, a Kansas City Barbeque Society Master Certified Barbecue Judge, and an author.  He also authored the Virginia Barbecue Proclamation that was unanimously passed by the Virginia State Legislature in 2016.  His latest tome, From Barbycu to Barbecue: The Untold History of an American Tradition offers a fresh new look at the story of southern barbecuing.  The book includes an analysis of historical sources throughout the Americas that show that the southern barbecuing technique is as unique to the United States as jerked hog is to Jamaica and barbacoa is to Mexico. A recipe in each chapter provides a contemporary interpretation of a historical technique.  Joined by guest co-host, Doug Scheiding, we all learn a lot about the history of the cooking method we love.    Josh Schaub is the commissioner of the American Association of Professional Baseball.  Schaub oversees their  operations, media, expansion, revenue initiatives, technology enhancements and emergence, public relations, and relationships in professional baseball.  He is the former CEO and co-owner of the Joliet Slammers baseball club of the Frontier League, a board member of the Frontier League and Prospect Leagues, and has previously worked in the Milwaukee Brewers scouting department as an intern and associate scout. Schaub also previously clerked for the Northern League. Additionally, Schaub has served as a consultant and legal counsel to numerous professional baseball teams for both business, legal, and baseball matters.  We discuss this excellent alternative to the Major Leagues which for some baseball fans is an opportunity to attend live games and root for a local team they are missing with the MLB.     We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. [An archive re-release favorite from September 2017, featuring one of professional baseball's most enigmatic leagues!] Inc. Editor-at-Large David Whitford (Extra Innings: A Season in the Senior League) joins host Tim Hanlon to retrace his journalistic odyssey covering the inaugural season of the short-lived, Florida-based Senior Professional Baseball Association (SPBA) in the winter of 1989-90.  Whitford recalls the early-career events leading up to his plum writing assignment, and the process by which he went about chronicling this unique, but ultimately ill-fated eight-team circuit for former pro players over the age of 35 (32 for catchers).  Despite half the franchises folding after the first 72-game season (and the rest of the league mid-way through the second), the Senior League afforded dozens of former big-league players and managers what Whitford dubbed a "life-after-death fantasy" – one that attracted both stars and journeymen alike for a chance to either stay fresh for one last shot in the Show, recapture past on-field glories, or simply earn some needed money.  Whitford highlights a wide array of characters he met while covering the SBPA, including: Founder Jim Morley, the thirty-something hustler who erroneously believed a senior league could generate cash flow sufficient to sustain his debt-ridden real-estate empire; Commissioner Curt Flood, the indefatigable player's union representative  who broke Major League Baseball's reserve clause, but sacrificed his career in the process;  Pitcher Wayne Garland, the former Cleveland ace and early free-agent beneficiary who risked permanent shoulder damage by coming back to play pro ball after a five-year layoff; Ex-Padres/Astros fastballer (and pioneer descendant) Danny Boone, who reinvented himself into a knuckleball specialist, and improbably made it back to the bigs with Baltimore in 1990 following the SPBA season; AND  A veritable who's who of former big-name major league stars – each with their own personal reasons for returning to the diamonds:  Bobby Bonds, Joaquin Andujar, Vida Blue, Rollie Fingers, Ferguson Jenkins, Dave Kingman, Bill “Spaceman” Lee, Graig Nettles, Mickey Rivers, and even manager Earl Weaver – just to name a few. + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: "Good Seats" Show & Defunct Team Merch:  http://tee.pub/lic/RdiDZzQeHSY Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable   SPONSOR THANKS: Royal Retros (promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats   BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN:  Extra Innings: A Season in the Senior League (2024): https://amzn.to/4cfkRbs   FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

As Mike Tyson would say, “Everyone's got a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” I think we can all agree that life sometimes delivers unexpected knockout blows that threaten to send us to the canvas of the ring we call life. Pain, challenge, adversity, and disappointment are all inevitable, but it's not about what happens to us as much as it's about how we respond to what happens to us. Will you give up or will you get up? Will you quit or will you keep pushing forward? Thankfully today, we have a very special guest who is no stranger to setbacks in this life. Our guest today, Lance Thonvold, was a superstar NCAA Division 1 pitcher at the University of Minnesota before becoming an MLB Draft Pick by the Seattle Mariners. However, after a professional career riddled with injuries, Lance was forced to retire from the game he loved at the age of 25. Unsure of what to do next, Lance remembers the Lord imprinting a unique perspective on his life, that even when the storms of life come our way, we must remember that we are being planted, not buried. In spite of his pain, Lance has become an impactful author and one of the leading and resounding leaders in motivational and inspirational speaking. Our prayer is that today would shift your perspective, ignite your perseverance, and remind you of the incredible purpose God has called you to!
