Bone Burnett, attracted attention for songs such as “Mr. Jones,” “Round Here,” and “Rain King.” The album earned the group two Grammy nominations and was certified seven-times platinum. The double platinum follow-up album, Recovering the Satellites, reached number one and produced the top 10 pop single “A Long December.” Subsequent #1 singles on Billboard's AAA chart include “American Girls” with Sheryl Crow, “She Don't Want Nobody Near,” “Accidentally in Love” from Shrek 2 (which earned them an Academy Award nomination), and “You Can't Count on Me” and “Come Around” from the band's fifth album, Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings. In 2021 Counting Crows reached #2 on the AAA chart with “Elevator Boots” from their EP Butter Miracle, Suite One. Their eighth studio album, Butter Miracle, The Complete Sweets!, will be released this Friday, May 9. You'll hear clips of some of the new songs during our conversation, but to hear others Adam discusses, such as “With Love, From A-Z” and “Boxcars,” you'll have to wait a few days for the new album. In all, the band has sold over 20 million albums and established themselves as vibrant live performers who often put a fresh spin on the recorded versions of their classic songs.

President Trump's new tariffs are set to take effect this week, including a 25% tariff on foreign cars and auto parts. A new CBS News poll shows more than half of Americans disapprove of Mr. Trump's handling of the economy with 55% saying there's too much emphasis on tariffs. Davery Jaso's infant twins were born in West Texas in the middle of the state's worst measles outbreak in decades. She describes efforts to protect her children, who like millions of others, are too young to be vaccinated. The FAA is investigating more aviation incidents at Washington's Reagan National Airport. On Friday, a military jet got close enough to a departing Delta flight that it set off an alarm in the cockpit. On Saturday, a United flight had a close encounter with a kite. CBS News senior transportation correspondent Kris Van Cleave has more. As part of CBS News' "Surprise Cities" series, CBS News contributor David Begnaud visits Greenville, South Carolina, where he meets Kenzie and Kayleigh, two young girls delivering customized American Girl dolls to children affected by Hurricane Helene. Their mission of compassion is helping other kids heal through play. Jay Ellis, star of "Insecure" and "Top Gun: Maverick" takes on a fictional version of Warriors star Sleepy Floyd in "Freaky Tales," a genre-blending film set in 1987 Oakland that reimagines the night Floyd scored 29 points in one quarter and what happens when he becomes the target of a heist. 125. Cara Familian Natterson: Physician to Puberty Influencer

The 92 Report

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 31, 2025 42:07

Show Notes: Cara Natterson moved to New York City where she worked for a drug rehabilitation center, and later moved to Baltimore, where she studied at Johns Hopkins Medical School. She eventually returned to L.A. and practiced pediatrics there. Her writing career began at the age of 31 when a co-worker asked her to read his manuscript, which inspired her to write her own book about raising kids. The Body Book Series and Less Awkward Company In 2008, Cara decided to leave clinical medicine and become a full-time writer. In 2011, after speaking at Mattel, she was signed on to write for the Body Book series from American Girl, which has since sold millions of copies. Cara then started touring the country, focusing on puberty education. During this time, she discovered that there was nothing else available for kids whose bodies, brains, feelings, and friends were changing. She launched her own business, Less Awkward, a company that created direct-to-consumer products designed for comfort and health like bras and socks. Cara has since expanded the company to focus on content across social media, podcasting, newsletter, and school curriculum. Health and Sex Education Curriculum In the past year, she has rolled out two platforms: a health and sex education curriculum for schools, which is already implemented in three states, and a membership for parents and trusted adults. Cara talks about the importance of understanding and discussing puberty in young people. She highlights the slower pace of puberty, with girls entering puberty at an average age of 8-9, and boys at an average age of 9-10. She emphasizes the importance of discussing the first signs of puberty, such as breast budding or testicular growth. She also highlights the importance of discussing the issue of first porn exposure, which is a significant concern for parents, family members, coaches, mentors, healthcare providers, and educators. She emphasizes the need to educate children about free porn, which is generally violent and aggressive, and calls for a less awkward approach to discussing this topic. By engaging in conversations about this topic, adults can help their children navigate the challenges of puberty and promote healthier lifestyles. Launching a Direct-to-Consumer Product Cara talks about the shift from a pediatrician to writer to entrepreneur. She initially went to medical school but, although she found it interesting, she also realized that she was more of a creative type. However, her background combined with her creative mind led to the drive to develop comfortable and healthy products. After a chat with a friend about bras, she was convinced that there was a need for comfortable bras for young girls. The two women partnered with a sewer who made a comfortable and healthy bra for their daughters, and later pulled together a team that developed the product over many years. They patented the product and launched the company during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was initially launched as a mask company, focusing on distribution and production channels instead of bras to supply the then current demand. Six months later they launched their bra products. She talks about the journey from design and development to launching the product and what she learned along the way. Cara's business ethos has always been to do well and to do good at the same time, and she has found this to be a recipe for success. The This Is So Awkward Podcast The conversation turns to Cara's podcast which she started with her partner, Vanessa Kroll Bennett. The podcast addresses the confusion about the length of puberty. It features background episodes and guest appearances with experts from various fields. In October 2023, they published a book called This Is So Awkward: Modern Puberty Explained, which explores the changes in puberty and how to talk about them, and it includes essays by kids about their experiences with acne, first periods, and heartbreaks. The podcast has expanded along with content on Instagram and TikTok. All of this content is also available on the website LessAwkward.com. They also have a school-based health and sex education curriculum called That Health Class. Navigating Today's Cultural Complexities Cara emphasizes the importance of pediatricians in understanding and managing the changes in puberty. She explains that kids and their adults are overwhelmed by the complexity of the world and the increased access to a wide and diverse range of information. Pediatricians often lack the time or bandwidth to provide anticipatory guidance for children, an especially big issue given the mental health crisis among children. Cara mentions that pediatricians often turn to the LessAwkward website where they have trained an AI bot on their content. Pediatricians are starting to use it as a healthcare solution when they don't have the time to answer questions but their patients want to be able to anticipate what's coming. The bot is reliable, gated, and trained on good data, making it engaging and entertaining. The levity and warmth of the content make it a valuable tool for pediatricians to recommend. Factors that Contribute to Early Puberty The American Girl Body Book series launched just after a 1997 study showed that girls were entering puberty earlier. It stated that the average age has shifted from 11 to 10, and a follow-up study in 2010 found it to be between eight and nine. The reason for this change is under investigation, but it is believed to be due to a number of factors, including stress, adverse childhood experiences, and antibiotics. Stress causes cortisol surges, which can either trigger the release of hormones like LH and FSH, or cause sex hormones to surge. Adverse childhood experiences, such as witnessing trauma or drug abuse, can increase the risk of entering puberty early. Evolutionary theory suggests that the human body is meant to reproduce before life ends, and so it makes sense that the general stress response might drive earlier development. She mentions Louise Greenspan, a woman who has been researching puberty for decades, has written a book called The New Puberty which further explores this topic. The Male Side of the Story Cara's parenting podcast has a diverse audience, with nearly 20% male listenership. She shares her experiences with male listeners and the challenges they face in connecting with their children. She wrote Decoding Boys, and states, with a degree of jocularity, that there is no data on the connection between testosterone and silence, but it is common among males, especially in their tween years. She shares personal strategies to help connect with tween or teen boys, as they do want to talk and share their thoughts with trusted adults. In the book, Cara shares strategies she has used, and in this conversation, she shares a personal experience on how she encouraged her son to talk to her.  Influential Harvard Courses and Professors Cara's career highlights her interest in sociology and biological anthropology, which she combined at Harvard. She wrote a junior paper about female genital mutilation in Africa and a thesis about HIV prevention in teenagers in Boston suburbs. She had a vivid memory of her thesis advisor, Irven DeVore, who was an interesting thinker and helped her fit her thesis idea into the curriculum. Welcome to this explosive and investigatory episode of Light ‘Em Up.Our global audience has reached 119 countries. Spread the word! This is the story of the tragic death of an “All-American Girl” and the sloppy investigation that ensued.Out of Aubrey, Texas, we shine the antiseptic light of the truth to investigate the death of Haley Cheney, a 24-year-old, new mother who was found sitting in her car in the driveway of her boyfriend's home early on December 3, 2023 — with a bullet in the right temple of her head. We're honored to sit and talk with (Mrs.) Jackie Stewart Alvarado, Haley's aunt. According to Jackie, “Haley had the biggest, bluest eyes and she gave THE ABSOLUTE BEST hugs. She always greeted everyone with the words, “hello beautiful”.  She never met a stranger, and she absolutely loved, loved, loved animals.  Haley loved life. She was filled with hope, promise and potential.  She loved fully and completely her family and those around her.  She was one of the most selfless individuals.”  Haley was thrilled to be a new mother — she adored her baby boy.  Her life had barely just begun. Haley had to work very hard in order to maintain the peace and to encourage a positive perspective in the relationship with her boyfriend. She wanted to be loved by her boyfriend, yet time and again, she was confronted with threats of physical violence by him.  We'll showcase just one of many verbal threats made by Kristopher Winston, as was posted on Facebook (according to members of Haley's family). The City of Little Elm Police Department caught this case.  That may have been one of the most detrimental and injurious factors in the case.Police departments are entrusted with a diverse set of tasks requiring a high degree of integrity within their agencies. Without that integrity, bad things happen, and people and cases suffer.Determining the correct cause and manner of death are among the chief responsibilities of the forensic pathologist, not a street cop or even a Detective Sgt.  When confronted with a case having a questionable manner of death, it is important for scene evidence, witness statements, and forensic autopsy findings to be thoroughly reviewed before certifying the manner of death. We examine the factors that hurt a thorough investigation and led to a rush to judgement that this case was a suicide.  Haley's family vehemently disagrees with this finding. There's nothing common about murder nor a suicide. Each case has its unique aspects and signatures. Every case, victim and member of the surviving family deserves to have their loved one's case investigated to its fullest extent. The investigative process involves both science and art.  For an investigation to be effective it must follow a few basic principles.  Following the acronym “T-A-R-O-T” (just like the card) ...The incident must be investigated in a: Timely, Accurate, Relevant, Objective & Thorough manner.  We'll break down each aspect of a proper investigation and discuss the 5 F's of Murder.  We educate on IPV & IPH (Intimate Partner Violence and Intimate Partner Homicide).3 women are killed every day at the hands of those who "claim" to love them. You can judge for yourself if that's what transpired in this case. We deliver the facts ... not the fiction. Tune in to hear all of the explosive details. Summary of What to Look Forward ToReflecting on the past inspires hope for the future. The focus is on restoring American values, emphasizing smaller government, free speech, and justice. Challenges include a divided nation of "givers and takers" and media corruption.Key themes include exposing Leftist hypocrisy, freeing J6 prisoners, and ensuring accountability for corrupt elites. The cultural shift continues with Hollywood's decline, wokeism's demise, and media irrelevance.Humor and brevity are powerful tools to challenge Leftist narratives, spark thought, and drive meaningful change. With a four-year plan underway, optimism abounds for a transformative year in politics, culture, and societal values.[SEGMENT 2-1] What to look forward to… To look forward one must remember the past. I want to go back to the America I grew up in. When we do this, we find out that we didn't have it so bad, did we? But even into the 80s, things got better. We could always feel like America was getting better.   Just one lifetime ago in the United States, our grandfathers were able to buy a home, buy a car, have 3-4 children, keep their wife at home, take annual vacations, and then retire… all on one middle-class salary. Now that's practically impossible. If you are playing by the rules, doing it by the playbook, then you're getting screwed. This country is divided into givers and takers. Those looking for angles all the time for easy money. Who's getting screwed? Us. I see people in the media making millions for doing very little, and it's no big deal. I'm trying to figure out where all this money comes from.   Smaller, DOGE-managed government. The world's richest man fighting for justice and free speech. Accountable government, common-sense government per the Constitution Free speech. Will Americans trust that they have this? Or will they continue to bite their tongues? Recompense for those hurt by the Left's crushing of “truth-speak”. Social media giants must pay for what they did or they will have learned nothing.  [SEGMENT 2-2] What to look forward to 2 I haven't done a show on New Year's in years. But I decided to do something different this year. I wanted a fresh start to my 4-year plan. I want us all to feel like we are into something fresh. New. Exciting. Thanks for the feedback on the Supporter's Club show. I thought it was fantastic as I did it. One of my members commented: How motivational. And what insights into your background. For me, delving into me I think will help others. Not my background per se. But jogging little micro memories in you. We have one heck of a year coming up and I'm giving it my all. For those who support me, I promise you will learn a lot more about me, but what you learn about yourselves will be like getting a GREAT college education on you. Years ago, I was asked by a very wealthy man to come by his office. He wanted to meet me. He'd heard a lot about me, and wanted to meet me in person. He had sold his company for $200M dollars. He was thinking of running for office. J6 prisoners freed. Perp walks for many corrupt Biden-government officials, particularly those from the coup and the J6 coverup. Diddy's list, Epstein's list, and the other Hollyweirdos beside Weinstein who also committed crimes. The demise of Hollywood The continued decimation of the media The death of “wokeism”      [SEGMENT 2-3] Deaf Doll   [X] SB – Conservatives are happiest American Girl released a doll with “hearing loss”. Yes, I know. We aren't talking about some futuristic cyborg being made in a Wuhan lab. It's just a regular doll. You know, those with the not fully developed ears. Made of some type of rubber. I love what CNN wrote: The doll has brown hair and brown eyes and comes with a removable hearing aid. “American Girl has a rich legacy of creating timeless characters who encourage girls to reach for new heights and discover who they're meant to be,” said Jamie Cygielman, general manager of American Girl. “Working with Olympic hopeful surfer Caroline Marks adds real-world inspiration about what can happen when you go ‘all in' on your dreams.” In addition to the doll release, American Girl is partnering with the Hearing Loss Association of America to raise awareness and collect donations. The company also plans to donate $25,000 to the organization and support its annual walk. Starting January 1, it will also take donations for the HLAA in American Girl retail stores. Why not tattoo "Gimmick" across the doll's forehead?  First, selling a “hearing loss” doll is like selling a gluten-free car or a “free-range” sofa. Is your TV hypoallergenic? So does this doll sign? And if so, does it sign in all languages or the language where it is purchased? What if you get a doll that only knows Italian sign language? Do you buy Rosetta Stone for the ASL? Do Dolls Know They're Deaf? Next, if a deaf girl receives a doll, wouldn't she think it was deaf anyway? I'm certainly not picking on deaf people in asking that question. Truth be told I know little about the deaf community, though I grew up with deaf cousin-in-laws. Have I missed something and am only now finding out that the lack of “deaf dolls” is an issue?  I put this up there with the list of Leftist issues nobody cares about:Second-hand smoke (where's that one gone?)The color of park ranger uniformsCalling America the "land of opportunity"Using the word "wife" or "man"; take your pickI think you get the picture. And how do they test the dolls? Or are they just rejects from the production of “hearing dolls”? Or are they the aborted fetus of the pretentious "hearing" crowd who happily abort their deaf dolls? You can already see the can of worms we've opened here. And if you ask if the worms are hearing or deaf, I say to you, "Stop being so tone deaf!" I'm not pointing fingers, but I sense desperation at American Doll. As I highlighted earlier, "the company also plans to donate $25,000 to the organization". Plans to donate? That's not, "has donated" or "will definitely donate". My brother plans to pay me back for the money I loaned him 17 years ago. But I have made no plans to spend that money. I think somebody at American Girl is about to be outsourced with an H1-B Indian. He or she or "heshe" is so desperate to sell dolls, "they" came up with the asinine marketing gimmick. What must the War Room banter have been like as this idea was brought to life by this marketing whiz? “I've got it! We can sell deaf dolls to girls!” "They" continued, "Deaf girls will buy them, as the dolls are relatable. Hearing girls will buy them because they want to virtue-signal that they care about deaf girls." Did the person who thought up this marketing use to work at Hamilton. Because I haven't seen this much virtue-signaling on anything since white people got tricked into that anti-American play guised as support of one of our country's Founding Fathers and prohibited the use of white people in its cast. Hopefully we won't get the torture of Hamilton for the Deaf? What's Next? As for American Girl, what's next? A doll with anxiety disorders? Purchase her and get two free consultations with the doll shrink of your choosing. Or what about a doll with gender dysphoria. I'm still confused about Barbie's "Ken", and I'm not convinced he was the dude in that relationship.  Or how about a doll with a life-threatening peanut allergy, complete with Epipen? Hey, the doll get people's attention, so I'm not mad at American Doll. Maybe I will report on sales in a few months.       https://x.com/ScottPresler/status/1873434699533820232 Did you know that every voter in CA, NV, OR, & WA receives a mail-in ballot (whether or not the voter has requested one)? So, if you move away from one of these states — & don't cancel your voter registration — your old address will still receive a ballot.  [SEGMENT 2-4] Memes as training Brevity is the soul of wit, and the inspiration for lingerie. I love when people can synthesize a message to its essence. Doing that causes you to think. And that's our goal for Leftist in the coming year. Learn how to think. Then practice it ALL YEAR LONG. We have 4 years to drive out points home to Leftists. You game? It's not that difficult to twist Leftists in knots. Just make them live their lies. Twist things back on them.     What if teachers secretly started baptizing kids at school and hid it from their parents? How would the Left react? God made two genders: Leftists made the rest. Santa Claus: works one day. Spends the rest of the year judging you. How much would you pay to see the FBI raid the homes of Pelosi, Obama…the Clintons? Local man addicted to brake fluid says he can stop any time he wants. Santa: Before you make fun of people who believe in me, remember there are adults who still believe in socialism. And just like that, Liz Cheney doesn't like investigations anymore.    Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-kevin-jackson-show--2896352/support.

Welcome to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and real talk! We want to keep things light going into the holidays, but the world is still on fire, so we have to acknowledge the viral story of the manhunt for Luigi Mangione, the murderer of UnitedHealthcare CEO. The internet's reacting in a way we expected, but where should we draw the line? In our penultimate episode of the year, we're getting into the holiday spirit by revisiting the "it" toys of our childhood. What were some all time favorite toys we got as kids? Furby, a bike, and American Girl dolls! Tamagotchi, Polly Pockets, and Beanie Babies were huge so many millennials. Too bad we got scammed on thinking Beanie Babies would be valuable lol. In our look back, we also pay homage to those toys that were recalled for safety reasons: the Cabbage Patch SnackTime Kid and Sky Dancers. RIP you two, you weren't a 90s kid if you didn't get your fingers chomped by the Cabbage Patch SnackTime kid, or hit in the face by a Sky Dancer. What crazy lengths did parents go to to acquire the "it" toy of the year pre-internet? Healing our inner child: what gift would we get for our younger selves that we never got? This week's recommendations are very timely! Hit your nearest holiday pop up bar with friends (Pam), Mighty Patches to address that blemish before you're forced to take a million pics at the holidays (Andrew), and signing up for a 2025 healthcare plan by 12/15 if you don't already have coverage (Laura). Interested in supporting #Millennial? We are a listener supported show, and can only do weekly releases thanks to the amazing listeners who subscribe to our Patreon or make a purchase at our Official Merch Store! And in this week's installment of After Dark: Hoping to have a cute first date over the holidays? Look no further! We've got advice, and even share our own stories of going on good dates. Andrew's first date with Pat was chaperoned, but they got a first date picture out of the deal! Is it cool or cringe to have a "spot" to take all your first dates? Learn more about your ad choices. Bonnie McKee chats about co-writing hits with Katy Perry, including "California Gurls" and "Roar," as well as her own artist career that has resulted in successful singles such as "American Girl." PART ONE:Scott and Paul share a little preview of what's to come as they prepare to celebrate Songcraft's 10 anniversaryPART TWOOur in-depth conversation with Bonnie McKeeABOUT BONNIE McKEE:Bonnie McKee grew up as a classically trained singer and pianist, but began pursuing a pop music career while still a teen. In 2004 she released her debut album, Trouble, with Reprise Records, but soon switched her focus to working as a behind-the-scenes songwriter. She has written ten songs that have hit #1 in either the US or UK, and is best known for her work with Katy Perry, which began with the Diamond-certified and international chart-topping album, Teenage Daydream. Bonnie contributed to three songs on the album, all of which became chart-topping singles: “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).” When the deluxe Complete Confection version of the album was released, Bonnie landed two more chart-topping singles with “Part of Me” and “Wide Awake.” She went on to collaborate with Katy Perry on four songs on the follow-up album, Prism, including the Top 20 single “Birthday” and the #1 hit “Roar.” Other successful singles from the Bonnie McKee songbook include “Dynamite” for Taio Cruz, “Hold it Against Me” for Britney Spears, “C'Mon” for Kesha, and the UK chart toppers “How We Do (Party)” by Rita Ora and “I Don't Care” by Cheryl. Additionally, she's written songs for Cher, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, Bebe Rexha, Jason Derulo, Kygo, and Adam Lambert, among others. In 2013, Bonnie reemerged as an artist with the single “American Girl” on Epic Records. She recorded an entire album, but parted ways with the label and it was shelved. Enough tracks and demos leaked online over the years, however, that fans were clamoring for it. Now, more than ten years later, Bonnie has re-recorded the album. She combined the re-recorded tracks with the original release of “American Girl,” which has now been streamed 23 million times on Spotify. The end result is Hot City, an album more than a decade in the making.
