KUOW has uncovered a controversial period in the life of Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell -- one that he's rarely discussed in public. In 1996, while at a casino in Iowa, Harrell brandished a gun in a late-night confrontation over a parking spot. Harrell was arrested over the incident before the charges were dismissed five months later. He says he was racially profiled in the events leading up to the arrest. KUOW’s reporting is the first local coverage of Mayor Harrell’s run-in with the law. It comes at an important moment because this year, Harrell is up for reelection. The reporting on the incident comes from KUOW investigative reporter Ashley Hiruko, who joined Soundside to share her reporting. An Australian football player is walking away from jail time after being accused of racially harassing a Metropolitan police officer. Sam Kerr was found not guilty by a British jury over an incident two years ago where she called an officer stupid and white. UK Correspondent Gavin Grey told Francesca Rudkin the charge could have lead to two years in prison. He says the 31-year-old has always claimed she was antagonised by officers when she was taken to the police station following a dispute with a taxi driver. And with each cabinet appointment, Trump used TCMC as a metaphor, revealing his intentions to expose those who dared exile him for 4 years. Trump plotted, planned, schemed. And he is now back on top. And not by just a little. In April, an unprecedented lawsuit was filed in the Supreme Court of California challenging the state's death penalty statute as racially discriminatory and unconstitutional under the Equal Protection guarantees of the California Constitution. The filers which include the ACLU, LDF (Legal Defense Fund), and the Office of the State Public Defender on behalf of OSPD, Witness to Innocence, LatinoJustice PRLDEF (Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund), the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, and Eva Paterson, co-founder of the Equal Justice Society, claim, “This is the first time a petition of this nature has been filed with the court.” “Numerous empirical studies by leading social science experts reveal troubling disparities: Black people are about five times more likely to be sentenced to death when compared to similarly situated non-Black defendants, while Latino people are at least three times more likely to be sentenced to death.” The 95-page complaint stated, “The parties agree that persistent and pervasive racial disparities infect California's death penalty system.” The Vanguard recently hosted a webinar to discuss this historic suit. It seems that a black dude questioning a White person about White educators Racially abusing him constitutes a threat - and may portend negro sexual aggression. We'll also revisit allegations of reckless and unsafe workplace culture at Boeing. Last week, we discussed the legal import of the term "whistleblower." This term confers legal protections to a worker who reports misconduct or criminal activity. Theoretically, without the the threat of unjust reprisals, workers will be less fearful about reporting misconduct. However, two White Boeing whistleblowers (Joshua Dean; John Barnett) have died under suspicious circumstances. Gus T. has said for years, the plantation is not safe. And Boeing mass manufactures weapons to kill. A number of courageous listeners shared about the emotional impact their job is having on their mental health.
