Now, she's a writer and fitness advocate with a massive following of fellow lifters. Her latest book, A Physical Education, tells the story of how stepping into the weight room changed her life — body, mind and heart. Sometimes those memories are about how they led their classes, making everyone feel accepted and valued, and sometimes we recall a humorous moment, or maybe a hat or other accessory that became that teacher's "brand." Kaarle McCulloch is a former Olympic Track Sprint Cyclist with a 15-year career at the top of her sport including Olympic Bronze and 4 World Championships. Retired in 2021, Kaarle went on to coach the British Women's Sprint Team from 2022-2023 with great success and recently returned to Australia in late 2023 to fulfil the same role as Australian Women's Sprint coach and QAS coach. Kaarle has a degree in Health and Physical Education and is a former level 1 ASCA coach. David Watts has been preparing athletes for competitive success for well over 10 years. Beginning his career at the QAS between 2011-2016, David has since spent time at the Geelong Football Club as a rehabilitation coach and also at the Melbourne Demons as the head of strength and power. More recently he has returned to the QAS and is currently working with track and field, cycling and beach volleyball athletes. David is accredited with the ASCA as a Master L3 Coach and this will be his fourth time presenting at the ASCA international conference QUOTES “I am from a family of teachers and I believe really strongly that coaching is teaching and teaching is coaching. So a lot of my coaching philosophy centres around pedagogical practices and trying to create learning environments for athletes” “For track cycling, I feel very strongly that its foundation is in strength. So gym forms the first and probably the most important part of becoming fast and I work off a sort of a triangle model where strength is at the bottom. To be powerful, you need to be strong. And then to be fast, you need to be powerful.” “I don't like to call it taper because I think taper has some connotations around it and athletes think that they're going to feel good and that everything's going to go amazing but it never ever happens that way. And so, unload for me is all in its title. It's about taking out work as we get closer to the event.” “I'd say 90 % of time the gym and bike loading is aligned. So if we've got a de-load week or a low week, it's low in the gym as well.” “So in the team sprint cycling, we've got three types of acceleration, we've got low range, so from zero, we've got mid-range which is our high power and we've got, you know, high range acceleration, which is our speed. So that's how the week looks. Work high torque, high strength in the start of the week. We work high power midweek, and then we work that sort of back end speed at the end of the week. And that doesn't really shift through all of the periodized phases. What shifts is the specificity of it.” “We have a monthly catch up with my group and every month they have to present something back on what they've learned through the month and that gives them accountability and ownership over what they're doing.” SHOWNOTES 1) Kaarle and David's backgrounds as athletes and coaches 2) What type of collaboration is needed when developing athletes and Kaarle's philosophy on sprint cycling performance 3) Benchmarking events in sprint cycling and periodization approaches from the macro- to the micro-cycle 4) What base building, general prep, specific prep and unload phases can look like for athletes in sprint cycling 5) Different weekly structures and adapting the structure around different athletes and their experience and fiber typology 6) Physical benchmarks for athletes in sprint cycling and 220kg full squats 7) Pedagogical approaches to developing athletes and session planning considerations and creating conditions for athletes to both fail and play 8) One legged box jumps and the power of vulnerability PEOPLE MENTIONED Anna Meares Matthew Denny Brene Brown
Walking in menopause isn't just exercise — it's your secret sauce for boosting body and mind! With a few fun tweaks, make every step turn into a memory-boosting, fat-burning powerhouse. Slip on those sneakers. Tune in while taking a walk! This episode is all about making walking in menopause more beneficial! Walking 40 minutes three times a week increases Hippocampus(memory central). A 2011 study on older adults at the University of Colorado, published in the Journal Neuroimage, proved this! The hidden gem – you can walk at any pace you like. There's no minimum exertion level for this to happen. Walk short vs long So much research I've shared previously showed that intermittent breaks really matter more. Breaking up sedentary time with 2-5 minute movement breaks reduced post-meal blood sugar spikes by 17%. Walk after meals 10 minute walks after meals had a more positive impact than a single long walk. Especially when it comes to blood sugar, belly fat and insulin resistance, more studies show! And yes, after is better than before. But if you're debating between before or not at all, yes go! You will make walking in menopause more beneficial this way by directly supporting blood sugar balance and combating insulin resistance. Go a different route or backwards Dr Ellen Langer, the Mother of Mindfulness, was the first female professor at Harvard and she's done some notable research in aging, mindset, and placebo. She shared the idea of creating habits – have us all operating automatically. Instead, she said the secret is noticing. Truly being mindful. More Fun Ways to Make Walking in Menopause a Total Game-Changer Walk and talk (therapists now walk) Need a little therapy? If not with an actual therapist but a friend. There's science to show the combination of walking outdoors (possibly even at a track) and talking is beneficial. Throw into the mix sunshine and you have three powerful serotonin producers, for a feel good session to rival antidepressant and anxiety meds. I've been known to take my phone and call a friend and talk through a 45 minute walk when life gets crazy. Amplify the learning opportunity Students who learn best, do. Learning any material while moving can boost your retention of it. The trick is to find activity and content you can focus on. Walking makes it easy and listening to a podcast that's educating you - whether on the benefits of walking (this is truly meta if you're walking right now) or you're learning about how to organize your closet or why essential amino acids are important. Students who move retain up to 76% compared to 37% while sitting. Weighted vest Using a weighted vest can increase the metabolic costs, relative exercise intensity, and loading of the skeletal system during walking. A study of trail runners concluded that between 5 and 10% the physiological and mechanical changes were significant. Meaning that at 10% additional load, there could be a considerable amount more stress on your system and your mechanics may also be altered. If you weigh 140 lbs and are using a weighted vest, you might be best starting for short periods of time with between 7 and 14 lbs, being careful not to do much time with 14 lbs until well adapted. And Finally—The 8th Way To Make Walking In Menopause More Beneficial Add intervals Do this last one with conscious planning. It's not always “more is better.” Many midlife and older women were born into the “harder or more is better” thinking. It can be hard to lose this. But if you never go easy, you're fooling yourself to think your “hard” effort is actually your capacity. To make walking more beneficial in menopause you'll want it all: short and moderate and longer walks. You'll want brisk and leisurely paced walks. But at the core of the majority of benefits from walking is just do it, daily, for a cumulative effect of movement that occurs several times a day. Are you interested in a virtual training that accumulates in a virtual “event”? Maybe a Flipping 50 walk on the same day, in different parts of the world. This is the 4th Article club with Brendan SueSee, Michael Davies, and Dave Robinson. The article they discussed was:Sarah Metz, Benjamin Zander & Ina Hunger (09 May 2024): The suffering of students in physical education. Unsettling experiences and situational conditions, Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy, DOI: 10.1080/17408989.2024.2352825 This paper captured a wide range of unsettling PE experiences by taking different perspectives of 677 physical education students. It used a social constructivist approach to address two questions: (1) What kind of experiences are interpreted as unsettling by students in PE? (2) Which situational conditions are associated with students' unsettling PE experiences? We speak about some of the challenges for PE teachers whilst at the same time considering that the issues raised are not uniquely ‘PE' problems but also problems of society.
