Casey Johnston, the author of Sam’s favorite new book A Physical Education, joins Sam to talk lifting and leaving diet culture. Casey explains why initially she—and many others—felt lifting wasn’t for women who wanted to be seen as attractive, and why people are afraid to question the status quo of health industries. Casey explains the importance of resting your muscles, the dangers of the manosphere, and why Don Jr. did the worst deadlift she’s ever seen. Sam explains why she always lies on airplanes when they ask if she can open a 35 pound door and they agree that the perfect gym would be a library with weights. School starts up this week for some districts in our region, others started last week – before Labor Day! For some students, gym classes may include a surprising throwback: The Presidential Fitness Test. President Trump reestablished the program over the summer. It had been quietly phased out in 2013 by President Obama, and people are split over the value and impact of this test. Teachers and fitness experts alike have criticized the test, suggesting it’s not effective in helping students develop healthier lifestyles, and at worst – some argue it encourages bullying and anxiety over body image. We wanted to talk with an actual physical education teacher – NOT a gym teacher – about the return of the Presidential Fitness Test. GUEST: Terri Garrett, a P.E. teacher at Lindbergh High School in Renton, with over 30 years of experience teaching Physical Education, around the Puget Sound. Born in Canada, Jill was working as a Physical Education teacher in Bavaria in September 2014 when she was hit in the head with a ball in a freak accident.Taken to emergency and quickly discharged with only a “black eye”, Jill was later diagnosed with a fractured skull and a traumatic brain injury (amongst other injuries).2 years, 7 hospitals and 3 countries later, Jill's black eye never re-opened and she was left with a traumatic brain injury and just 30% of her vision. But that was not going to stop Jill from returning to her beloved mountains. She originally set a goal to circumnavigate the world in a year on a quest to run illustrious mountain ranges with her “differently abled” body. We recorded this conversation in 2018 and she's still climbing mountains and conquering heights!

The data is quite conclusive: young people around the world are struggling. Research and books such as The Anxious Generation highlight the negative effects of technology and social networks on our students. We also know that two common themes in international schools are academic pressure and high expectations for students applying to university. On a more positive note, we are seeing a growing trend of schools placing greater emphasis on a holistic approach to supporting students. In this interview, we learn how the Dean of Students at one school helps lead and coordinate efforts to stay ahead of these trends. We speak with Andy Vaughan, a Dean of Students at an international school, about his role in providing leadership to help students develop the life skills needed to overcome struggles and chart their pathway toward full and healthy lives.Andy is a Kiwi who has been living overseas with his family for the past 20 years teaching and leading in South East Asia. Currently working at the High School Dean of Students at International School Bangkok, Andy was previously the Athletics Director at ISB and in the past has taught Physical Education, Science, Health and Outdoor Education. He is passionate about establishing systems in schools that proactively ensure we support student well being to ensure all students feel like they belong and are cared for.Our guiding questions were: “What does a Dean of Students do? How has the role of Dean of Students evolved over time? What trends are you observing around this role in international schools going forward?”Here are a few of the topics covered in this episode:The impetus for and evolution of the Dean of Students role at Andy's schoolA breakdown of the job descriptionThe importance of using data to support studentsLessons learned from the roleObservations about digital wellnessAdvice on how to move into leadership positionsTrends in the role of Dean of Students and in international schools in generalResources shared in this episode: Mario Education Google Looker StudioParenting in the Digital Age & Family Wellness Workshop (Slideshow) The show was recorded on June 22, 2025.Categories: School Life | Parenting | Wellness Remember to access our Educators Going Global website for more information and consider joining our Patreon community at patreon/educatorsgoingglobal!Email us with comments or suggestions at educatorsgoingglobal@gmail.com Follow us on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram or YouTube.Listen on your favorite podcast app: connect from our share page.Music: YouTube.
