Send us Fan MailWelcome to Summer,Today I lay out a simple way to rest during summer break while still coming back ready to serve students better. I use the three Rs reflect, refocus, and regroup to review what worked, fix what didn't, and build a real plan instead of repeating last year. • reflecting on the previous school year with pluses, minuses, changes, and keepers • building a PE culture that stays fun and educational • using a wristband-style student leadership program to create ownership and responsibility • dealing with tight equipment budgets, missed grants, and making do with what you have • spotting games and routines that feel stale and deciding what to tweak or drop • refocusing the yearly calendar around weather, indoor days, and units like net games • adding new games, music, exercises, and better ways to run large-group flag football • planning bigger projects like a treasure hunt challenge, archery, and a bike trailer • regrouping with a written plan, backwards planning, and meetings with administration  Take care,Dave-Check out supersizedphysed.com for more resources, including free PDFs, articles, and courses to help with your PE program. This article targeted Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) coursework significantly improves preservice teachers' subject mastery in volleyball and basketball, though posttest scores only reached moderate proficiency. The research indicates that while targeted instruction boosts specialized content knowledge—particularly error analysis and task sequencing—it should be prioritized over general activity courses for effective teacher training. I don't know how many decades I need to talk about things so important while being ignored, but here we go again...I also don't know how many hundreds of books I have in my personal library at this point with amazing introductions and chapter sections that basically highlight the way out of the darkness of total destruction looming ahead in our immediate future.Bluntly, I criticize how a "sport-based" PE program is complete crap. I also cover overuse injuries in single-sport youth athletes playing travel team sports. I also go over playground design and playground equipment and how under the cloak of safety--playgrounds have been largely ruined. The real problem is not that the masses are not listening--it's that the people in control want us to be stupified so we pay attention to shit that does NOT matter. Here's a brief book review on PE philosophy from 1969. Enjoy.Source: "The Curriculum in Physical Education" by Carl E. Willgoose, Ed.D., Boston University (1969)

In this episode, Sharona and Boz welcome back Matt Townsley to dig into a critical—and often overlooked—truth about grading reform: if leaders don't understand and support it, it simply won't scale. Drawing on both research and real-world experience, Matt explains why grading reform is a “second-order change” that requires deep philosophical commitment from administrators, not just technical adjustments from teachers. The conversation explores the upcoming Iowa based leadership-focused standards-based grading conference, the role of systems-level support, and emerging frameworks like multi-tiered support for teacher implementation. Along the way, the trio connects these ideas to broader challenges in both K–12 and higher education, from structural barriers to the growing urgency of reform in the age of AI. The takeaway is clear: isolated classroom innovation isn't enough—lasting change requires aligned leadership, intentional systems, and a shared purpose for what grades are meant to communicate.LinksPlease note - any books linked here are likely Amazon Associates links. For the second time in 12 years Glasgow is preparing to host the Commonwealth Games after Australia's Victoria state pulled out because of increased costs. Victoria's withdrawal raised questions about whether the 2026 games would go ahead before Glasgow agreed to step in. Staging a sporting mega-event is expensive and governments face increasing scrutiny over public spending. Victoria's decision raised wider questions about affordability for potential hosts. At the same time, critics question the Games' political relevance, given its origins in Britain's colonial past. The Commonwealth Games Federation says the event can be delivered in a more sustainable way and argues that it brings cultural and economic benefits to host cities, but recent editions have run into significant costs and budget pressures. This week on The Inquiry, Tanya Beckett asks ‘Is it time to scrap the Commonwealth Games?'ContributorsDr Stuart Whigham, Senior Lecturer in Sport, Coaching and Physical Education at Oxford Brookes University, UKDr Matthew McDowell, Lecturer in Sport Policy, Management, and International Development at the University of Edinburgh, UK Dr Verity Postlethwaite, Lecturer in Strategic Event Management at Loughborough University, UKProfessor Gayle McPherson, Associate Dean for Research at the University of the West of Scotland, and Director of Legacy and Community Engagement for Commonwealth Games Scotland, UKPresenter: Tanya Beckett Producer: Matt Toulson Researcher: Evie Yabsley Technical Producer: Craig Boardman Editor: Tom Bigwood Production Management: Phoebe Lomas and Liam Morrey(Photo: Commonwealth Games Gold Medal. Welcome to this episode of Thriving Matters. Our guest is Ryan Noonan, Leader of Digital Technologies and Innovation at Chevalier College, a day school with approximately 1,000 secondary students in the Southern Highlands, NSW, Australia. Listen in as we discuss a number of topics that impact how digital technologies and AI in education are ethically and inclusively drive classroom teaching and prepare students for future workplaces by emphasizing creativity, collaboration, and communication. Ryan highlighted the College's unique approach, centered on the "heart" of education, which includes academic skills, self-understanding, and capabilities, with a focus on wellbeing and personalized learning. He noted that while all students can benefit from these approaches with support, the pace of achievement varies. Ryan discussed the whole of community approach to their innovative teaching and learning framework centered around empathy and purpose, starting with self and community to build ethical skills. He emphasized the importance of assessing capabilities, particularly in younger students, and balancing academic rigor with practical workplace skills. Ryan highlighted the challenge of implementing frameworks across 100 teachers and stressed the need for dedicated support to facilitate change. You will hear actual teaching examples of using digital technologies and AI tools, specifically with Year 7 students. Ryan explained how students are encouraged to use tools like Google, Microsoft, and Canva to create personalized products, emphasizing the importance of effective prompting and understanding AI biases. Ryan also shared an example of redesigning assessments in Physical Education to incorporate AI-driven debates, allowing students to demonstrate their knowledge quickly and under time pressure. He stressed that AI use in the classroom always begins with student thinking, often through activities like quick writes, to ensure that AI responses are tailored to the student's prior understanding. He also highlighted a remarkable student achievement, where a Year 11 student developed a translation glove for the deaf, which was recognized by NASA for its innovative design. Ryan discussed Chev's strategy for integrating AI into education, focusing on three key areas: clarity, consistency, and capacity. He explained that they provide clear guidelines for AI use, ensure equal access to AI tools for all students, and build capacity among students, teachers, and parents. Ryan noted that while some students and parents are hesitant about AI, overall there hasn't been significant backlash. Ryan shared the ethical considerations of using AI tools in education, including student privacy, environmental impact, and bias. He emphasized the importance of teaching students to critically evaluate AI responses and avoid cognitive offloading. Ryan also predicted that within 5 years, AI agents will become more prevalent in the workplace, potentially impacting entry-level jobs and the way students are prepared for the future workforce. A very interesting and timely opportunity to amp up our response to using AI as tools for learning and teaching. The article examines learning that occurs through ball games in Swedish Physical Education and Health (PEH), challenging critiques that such activities overemphasise competition and performance. Drawing on observations and interviews with upper‑secondary students, the authors show that ball games foster both subject‑specific learning (skills, techniques, rules, and game understanding) and generic knowledge such as cooperation, care, fairness, and inclusion. Using a non‑affirmative theory of education, the study highlights that student participation and learning increase when competition is de‑emphasised and unfamiliar game forms are used, prompting a re‑articulation of learning objectives in PEH.CITE to the article:Modell, N., Gerdin, G., & Schenker, K. He critiques current approaches that treat character as a byproduct of sport and focus too heavily on performance virtues like discipline or competitiveness. Instead, he proposes the ideal of the “virtuous mover” — someone who learns through movement to cultivate wisdom, moral virtue, and lifelong human flourishing. The Aussie Book Club takes this article on in an engaging discussion.

What should tech companies be doing to prevent online abuse of women and girls? Ofcom's Chief Executive, Dame Melanie Dawes, joins Nuala McGovern to discuss their new guidance. It's urging tech firms to go much further to prevent the harm caused by misogynistic pile-ons, online stalking and intimate image abuse. They've also teamed up with Sport England to highlight the toll such abuse is taking on women in sport. Have you heard of rage rooms? Or even visited one? Turns out demand for them is surging, and 90% of the UK customers are women. Believed to have started in Japan in the early 2000s, rage rooms are places where people can smash up items such as electronics, white goods and crockery. Nuala is joined by Jennifer Cox, psychotherapist and author of Women are Angry: Why Your Rage is Hiding and How To Let It Out, and culture journalist Isobel Lewis who has visited a rage retreat.Isabelle Kyson, 17, is a national-level sprint hurdler and passionate advocate for girls in sport. Today, she releases her documentary, Out of the Race, on YouTube which explores why so many girls drop out of sport during puberty. Research shows that more than two-thirds of teenage girls quit sport by the age of 16 or 17—a trend Issey has been campaigning to change for some time, including lobbying government for action. She has also launched a new toolkit for schools, developed in partnership with the Association for Physical Education. Issey joins Nuala along with Kate Thornton-Bousfield, Chief Executive Officer of the Association for Physical Education. We discuss acting and AI as the actor Olivia Williams discusses why she wants actors to have more control over the data that is obtained from scans of their body. Many actors contracts now include a clause granting producers ownership of an actor's ‘likeness' across all platforms, forever. This can cover photos, drawings, figurines, and the full body scans captured with advanced technology. In a recent article in The Guardian, Olivia suggested that something similar to a 'nudity clause' should be added to contracts. She joins Nuala along with consultant solicitor, Kelsey Farish, who advises actors and performers on AI clauses. Presented by: Nuala McGovern Produced by: Sarah Jane Griffiths
