James Talarico, the low-testosterone Democrat running for the U.S. Senate, said in a podcast interview that the Bible nothing more than propaganda. He denounced efforts to education leaders to infuse Bible stories into school curriculum. Talarico, who is a theologian, also claims that God is non-binary and Jesus affirms abortion. Talarico also promoted a vegan lifestyle and once vowed to run a meatless campaign. To boost his Texas bonafides, he has been seen eating brisket and reportedly rented a pickup truck. Why do some brands become part of our lives while others disappear? In this episode of Entrepreneur Authorities, Joe Pardavila sits down with branding expert and author Ernie Ross to explore the hidden forces that shape the way people connect with products, companies, and ideas.Ernie is the founder of an award-winning branding and innovation agency and the author of Intangience: How Human Connection Creates Value Between People, Brands, and Ideologies. His work focuses on a simple idea: something only has value when it holds meaning for someone.During the conversation, Ernie explains why Coca-Cola has become one of the most recognized brands in the world, why traditional advertising often falls flat, and how entrepreneurs can shift their messaging from features and functionality toward genuine emotional connection. He also shares stories from his work on political campaigns in Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago, including a classified ad that helped create a national conversation and a powerful 30-second campaign built around a melting candle. The conversation covers:• Why successful brands focus on meaning• What Coca-Cola understands about human connection• The difference between value and worth• Why facts alone rarely persuade people• How emotional messaging changes buying decisions• The difference between propaganda and poignant messaging• How to identify the business you're really in• Why entrepreneurs should view their company through the customer's perspective• The economic opportunities emerging across the CaribbeanErnie also shares a practical exercise from Intangience: ask what you're offering your customer beyond the basic function of your product or service.Chapters00:00 Introduction00:54 Why meaning creates value01:45 Growing up in Guyana under a dictatorship02:36 What scarcity teaches us about value03:07 Why messages need to resonate03:43 What Coca-Cola really sells05:41 How Coke created a brand built around connection06:54 How Coca-Cola became associated with Christmas07:17 The challenge of telling an emotional story08:00 The pillars of purpose10:16 The difference between value and worth11:43 Why advertising fails13:01 How framing changes perspective15:11 The flower shop example every entrepreneur should hear17:07 Propaganda versus poignant messaging20:12 The broken mirror lesson21:42 Building political campaigns that connect emotionally22:31 The classified ad that went viral25:28 A campaign that helped change Guyana28:22 The overlooked business opportunities in the Caribbean32:00 The first exercise entrepreneurs should take from Intangience32:43 Final thoughts

During World War II, food rationing in the United States reshaped daily life on the home front in profound and lasting ways. After the U.S. entered the war in December 1941, the government moved quickly to control scarce resources so that troops overseas and Allied nations could be supplied. The Office of Price Administration (OPA) introduced a system of ration books and stamps beginning in the spring of 1942. Every American—adults and children alike—received ration books. To buy restricted items, shoppers needed both money and the correct stamps or points. The system was designed to prevent hoarding, limit price gouging, and ensure more equitable distribution of limited goods.Sugar was the first food rationed, starting in May 1942, and it remained restricted until June 1947—well after the war ended. Each person was allotted roughly half a pound per week (about 26 pounds per year), roughly half of pre-war consumption. Coffee followed in November 1942. In March 1943, meats, cheese, fats and oils (including butter and shortening), canned fish, and canned milk were added. Processed and canned foods were controlled through a points system: “blue points” for canned and dried goods, “red points” for meat, fish, and dairy. Point values shifted with supply, turning grocery shopping into a careful calculation. These restrictions hit home baking especially hard. Sugar and fats were essential to cookies, cakes, and pies. Cooks adapted with ingenuity. Honey, molasses, maple syrup, and corn syrup replaced part or all of the sugar in many recipes. Shortening or margarine often stood in for butter because they required fewer ration points. Some wartime cookie recipes used rendered bacon fat or chicken fat. Nestlé and other companies promoted adapted versions of popular treats, including the relatively new Toll House chocolate chip cookie. Home bakers still found ways to make versions of the cookies, sometimes sending them to soldiers as morale boosters. Chocolate itself was prioritized for the military; Hershey produced dense, heat-resistant “Field Ration D” bars designed more for emergency calories than pleasure, while later tropical chocolate bars improved flavor for troops in the Pacific.Beyond individual recipes, rationing changed what Americans ate and how they thought about food. Victory gardens sprang up in backyards, vacant lots, and public parks; by 1943 an estimated 20 million gardens produced roughly 40 percent of the nation's fresh vegetables. Home canning surged. Macaroni and cheese became a staple because it was filling, required few points, and used little meat. Meatless days and “wheatless” or “porkless” meals appeared on restaurant menus and in household planning. Propaganda posters urged citizens to “Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.”The system was imperfect. Announcements of upcoming rationing often triggered buying rushes and temporary shortages. Black markets in meat, sugar, gasoline, and tires flourished in some places. Wealthier households sometimes found ways around limits more easily than poorer ones, though the bottom third of earners actually increased their meat consumption slightly under the more equalized wartime distribution. Women, already managing households while many men were away, shouldered much of the extra labor of planning meals around stamps, points, and substitutions. For the military, chocolate and other concentrated foods became important morale and energy sources. On the home front, the restrictions fostered a culture of thrift, experimentation, and shared sacrifice that lasted beyond 1945. When rationing finally ended, many of the habits—greater use of alternative sweeteners, interest in home gardening, and a practical approach to ingredients—lingered. Commercial products that had adapted during the war, including packaged chocolate morsels and convenient mixes, continued to grow in popularity.More Podcasts

Most speakers assume their audience is persuadable by good evidence. Psychologist Owen Fitzpatrick, who trained under NLP co-creator Richard Bandler and has travelled to over a hundred countries, including North Korea, Afghanistan and Iran, studying how belief actually forms, argues that's backwards. People believe what feels right, fits their identity, and keeps them inside their tribe. Evidence comes after, as justification.Owen built his reputation on charisma work (his book The Charismatic Edge argued charisma is an impression you create, not something you're born with) before moving into belief and propaganda with his new book Inner Propaganda, out 4 August. In this conversation, he lays out his DELP model (an expansion of Aristotle's ethos, logos, pathos to include demos — understanding your specific audience), explains why intelligent, critical-thinking people are often the most convincing propagandists to themselves, and draws a sharp line between persuasion, manipulation and propaganda that every speaker standing on a stage should sit with.We also get into why spontaneous, unscripted delivery reads as more truthful than polished delivery (with Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" as the example), and why AI's tendency to flatter you is quietly making this problem worse, not better. In this episode:Why charisma is built, not innate, and why it matters more now than when Owen wrote The Charismatic Edge in 2013The DELP model: demos, ethos, logos, pathosWhy perceived authenticity beats actual authenticity, and why spontaneity reads as truthWhy critical thinking doesn't protect you from bad beliefs (argumentation vs investigation)Motivated reasoning, naive realism, and sacred values: why smart people hold ridiculous beliefsThe difference between persuasion, manipulation and propaganda, and why every speaker is, to a degree, a propagandistOwen's practical tools: the belief audit, the feels right/fits in/makes sense framework, and E-Prime languageConnect with Owen on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/owenfitzp/The book and the special workshop are available at https://innerpropaganda.com, and you can discover more about Owen and his work at https://owenfitzpatrick.comFAQWhat is Owen Fitzpatrick's DELP model? The DELP model is Owen Fitzpatrick's expansion of Aristotle's rhetorical triad of ethos, logos and pathos. Owen adds demos, the requirement to understand the specific audience being addressed, alongside ethos (credibility and positioning), logos (logical structure and evidence) and pathos (emotional impact). What is Owen Fitzpatrick's book Inner Propaganda about?Inner Propaganda is Owen Fitzpatrick's book, to be released on 4th of August 2026, about how individuals generate their own propaganda internally through feelings, self-narratives and motivated reasoning. It argues that people convince themselves of beliefs the same way state propaganda convinces populations, through internal versions of state media, indoctrination and truth engineering. What is the difference between persuasion, manipulation and propaganda, according to Owen Fitzpatrick?Persuasion is the ethical attempt to change beliefs, attitudes or behaviour while genuinely caring about what the other person wants. Manipulation uses deception and serves only the persuader's own interests. Propaganda combines both, using every available tool of persuasion and manipulation to construct an entire reality for the audience. Why doesn't critical thinking protect people from believing false things?According to Owen Fitzpatrick, critical thinking and intelligence make people better at constructing airtight arguments (argumentation) rather than at genuinely investigating what is true (investigation). Motivated reasoning, a concept from psychologist Ziva Kunda, refers to people reasoning toward conclusions they already want to be true. What is naive realism?Naive realism is the belief that one's own perception of reality is objectively accurate and shared by anyone reasonable. Owen Fitzpatrick argues this prevents people from applying the same critical scrutiny to their own beliefs that they readily apply to beliefs they disagree with. What is E-Prime language and why does Owen Fitzpatrick use it?E-Prime is a form of English that eliminates the verb "to be," originally developed by David Bourland based on Alfred Korzybski's work on language and semantics. Owen Fitzpatrick uses it as a belief-flexibility tool: replacing "this is true" with "this seems true to me" builds in the possibility of revision.Visit https://strategic-speaker.scoreapp.com to take the 2-minute Strategic Speaking Business Audit and find out what's blocking you from getting more bookings, re-bookings, referrals and bigger fees. How can Islam be both the inventor of LGBTQ but also prone to throw gays off buildings and run cars through their pride parades? How can Islam be both the primary base of the radical left yet embrace Hitler's rightwing fascism? How can it be so accepted that Jews suffer the most in terms of hate crimes and discrimination when Muslims actually face far higher averages, especially when factoring in that the former cases are so often fabricated? News Media or Narrative Media? In this issue Brad Bright exposes how large parts of the media have abandoned reporting the news in favor of interpreting the news. America's News Media has largely metastasized into the Narrative Media. And by narrative, Brad means propaganda. Just like traditional propaganda the Narrative Media twists, omits, and invents facts in order to exploit your fears—to bypass your intellect.Fear is a powerful emotion. If they can scare you, they can control you. Then he highlights a recent example of the next ominous step: AI-generated “reality” that looks and feels real. AI will empower the Narrative Media to fabricate deceptive visual images that look and sound real. When those images connect with our deepestfears, they become a nearly irresistible siren's song.Brad closes with the four specific things Christians can do to help inoculate themselves from falling for the fear-based narratives of the modern Narrative Media. If this helps you, be sure to like, subscribe, and hit the bell so you never miss a new episode. Share it with someone who needs to see past the narrative.
Barry Strauss examines Mark Antony's critical "unforced error" of 33 BC: divorcing Octavia, Octavian's sister. This move provides Octavian with a massive propaganda victory, allowing him to frame Antony as having betrayed Rome for an Egyptian queen. Strauss explains the divorce was a "credible commitment" by Antony to show his Eastern supporters he was fully committed to the coming conflict. Despite advice from his experienced admiral, Ahenobarbus, to leave Cleopatra behind, Antony refuses because she controls the treasury and the Egyptian navy. While Antony may have preferred a campaign against Parthia, Octavian forces his hand by declaring war. Antony's decision to bring Cleopatra into the war effort is anathema to Romans, who view her as a foreign invader. This sets the stage for confrontation, with Octavian relying on the tactical genius of Marcus Agrippa. (4)

How did decades of geopolitical paranoia, nuclear anxiety, and state-sponsored propaganda completely reshape the landscape of global filmmaking? In this episode of Varn Vlog, we dive deep into the intersection of history and film with Jason Christian and Tony Ballas, the hosts of the Cold War Cinema podcast. From Hollywood blockbusters and hidden indie gems to the stark cinematic outputs of the Soviet bloc and divided Germany, our guests break down how the global standoff between capitalism and communism played out on the silver screen. We discuss the subtle (and not-so-subtle) ways governments weaponized art for ideological subversion, the lingering psychological weight of the nuclear age on directors, and how the tropes established during the Cold War continue to dictate modern media narratives today. We also explore the unique challenges of analyzing historical film through a critical, left-wing lens, sorting through the layers of censorship, blacklisting, and cultural memory that still distort how we view mid-century art. Whether you are a hardcore cinephile, a history buff, or a casual fan of classic cinema, this deep-dive conversation offers a fascinating look at the movies that defined an era.✨ Check out the Cold War Cinema podcast on all major audio platforms to explore their full catalog of film analyses!: https://coldwarcinema.com/Send us Fan Mail Musis by Bitterlake, Used with Permission, all rights to BitterlakeSupport the showCrew:Host: C. When journalist/professors Leslie-Jean Thornton submitted an academic paper about the effect of Trump administration attacks on the media on journalists and broadcasters, it was rejected. “Just a flash in the pan,” the scholarly reviewer told her. Well, they published that paper belatedly this year, and Thornton has plenty of material for an updated paper on increasing and more serious attacks. Journalists are fearful, more cautious — and more determined to keep on doing their work, the professor says.Leslie-Jean Thornton began in journalism, of a sort, when she was seven and handwriting the High Point News – on lined paper, distributed in violation of federal law in neighbors' mailboxes. She was shut down after the first edition, accused of embarrassing her mother and embroidering the truth by reporting a flirtatious exchange between mom and the milkman. She's been intrigued by truth, the perceptions of truth, and the communication of information ever since. She holds degrees in journalism and mass communication from Mercy College, New York University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she earned her doctorate. She had most recently worked at the Virginian-Pilot as the copy desk chief, and before that in editorial capacities in Connecticut and New York, including as executive editor of the Scarsdale Inquirer and The Enterprise, both in Westchester County. She was on faculty at SUNY New Paltz for three years before moving to Arizona State University's Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. There she was foundational in the school's revisioned masters' and inaugural doctoral programs. She teaches about social media, free expression. She is particularly interested in journalism practice during times of great change and stress, and communication through visual means such as social media memes and political cartoon

Text us your questions! We wanted something different from our usual fare, so we invited musician David Gungor to help us see spirituality through an artist's eyes: beauty, story, woundedness, and play. What starts as a talk about music becomes an exploration of navigating Christian deconstruction, church hurt, and the fear that life's best days might already be gone.David shares his pastor's kid upbringing, the family fallout that reshaped his world, and how his songwriting moved from evangelical worship culture toward liturgical art, peacemaking, and honest ambiguity. We dig into his “threefold path” of spiritual growth, why mythos and narrative matter for meaning, and what separates art from propaganda. If you've ever wondered why “Christian music” can feel instantly recognizable in the worst way, this part will stick with you: great spiritual art creates space for interpretation, awe, and participation.Things get even more real when David talks about pandemic-era health scares, anxiety attacks, intrusive thoughts, therapy, and the practice of “learning to just be.” We end somewhere unexpected: sports as structured play, where competition can become communal healing and even a kind of liturgy.=====Want to support us?The best way is to subscribe to our Patreon.
